This was the worst roast dinner I have ever had. Claimed to be all home cooked roast potatoes were like sponge Yorkshire pudding aunt Bessie.veg all mashed together on the plate. Only decent thing was the meat.staff very good and friendly. But would not go back there or recommend

READ..Nice welcome from staff on arrival,Clean premises.Choose the Homemade Steak pie meal..When I say there was the smallest flakes of steak stuck to the microwaved piece of pie I am not exaggerating it was appalling.The pie crust was soggy from being microwaved and how they have the cheek to call it a steak pie I don’t no If I were them i would buy some from outside I they can’t make a proper steak pie and have the cheek to charge £13.95 for it I would even give it to a dog. Just better off not putting such a sorry steak pie on the menu. Will never eat in there again just because of that reason,unbelievable! I would sack the chief also so salty

Great little battle cruiser .first time in here .barmaid was awesome friendy and attentive .closed a bit early but understood as it was Sunday and people had left .but cracking pub .this will be my local and looking forward to coming back .

Been here many times and it is now the Pub of choice from friends and family. Very friendly staff and superb quality 'home cooked' food. Given now is hopefully the time for warmer weather it has excellent outside seating.

This is a really lovely pub, with proper home cooked pub food which is priced as it should be. What a breath of fresh air to know that honest pubs still exist. Friendly staff make you feel welcome with a mature approach. Will definitely be going back.

Thankyou for a the Burns night celebrations, it was fab! Neaps and tatties with haggis were delicious! The band was incredible, some great 70’s classics and Scottish dancing too! Loved the 1855 ale, absolutely the best ale in writtle! We love coming to this lovely locale. The special rum and pineapple cocktail was spot on too! The service is always speedy with a mile of smiles! Thankyou to the chequers! What A great team to be proud of

Called in for a meal with my husband and son following a recommendation from a family member. As soon as we arrived we were made to feel welcome by the very sweet and chatty young staff member. The food was very good value and delicious, I have a bug bear about being served nasty wine at room temperature, none of that here, the wine was very well chilled and good quality. All the staff went above and beyond to make us comfortable and couldn’t have been more helpful and accommodating. We will definitely return with friends and can’t wait to have lunch outside in the lovely courtyard garden in the spring. A proper pub with proper standards and home cooked food. What more could you want! Thank you.

We didn't eat as we went to listen to the performers at their open mike night. Excellent entertainment all round and a great night had by all.

Our local pub. Love it here. Clean and welcoming and well managed, with friendly staff (they pour an excellent Guinness). Limited menu for veggies but all the food is good. Have bands some Fridays and music always good.

We recently booked for 31 of us to celebrate our Wedding Anniversary. A buffet was always an option, but I must admit I prefer a 'sit down meal' and I also like a choice and not a set menu which is not normally possible. However discussing it with Chris the landlord he agreed that everyone could have a choice from the menu and therefore have whatever they wanted. Result! I supplied him with details of everyone's selections a week before. One the day all the food came out together, (I was expecting it in batches) and everyone commented on not only the quality of the food, but also that it was hot! An absolutely great evening and many thanks to the Chequers and their team for making it happen.

Lovely traditional pub with a great choice of beers and ales. Food is good also. Don't have a massive menu, but all the favourites are on there. Staff are very friendly and helpful. An added bonus is that they are dog friendly as well.

We moved to Writtle in Autumn 2022. One great part of living here is having The Chequers a stone's throw from our door. Chris and the staff offer a relaxed and happy atmosphere. They have excellent bands on over many of the weekends and in the week it's a great place to unwind after work. I love that it's clean and well cared for, and they know how to pull a pint of Guinness! If we don't use it we'll lose it and it's a keeper.

We held my brothers wake at the cheques, what a lovely, friendly, family run pub, nothing was a problem, even though far more people turned up than we expected. Thanks Chris & Laura and rest of the lovely family who helped on the day.

Pub is ok, lovely outside patio area and very pleasant traditional interior. Good choice of beers etc. Menu is fine with plenty of choice. Food is good old pub grub with generous portions. Table service was very good, the waitress was very friendly and attentive, so all was well EXCEPT FOR THE EXCESSIVELY LOUD MUSIC!! I don’t mind music in pubs at all but when the volume makes conversation very difficult, verging on the impossible, especially when having a meal it becomes very intrusive and very surplus to requirements. It’s such a shame, but if it hadn’t been for that, I would have easily given a 4 star rating, sorry.

Great pub food is delicious and reasonable even cater for vegans 😊 entertainment evenings are brilliant, manager and staff are friendly helpful and make yr visit wonderful.xx

Nice little pub for lunch. Young lady that waited on us was very attentive. Food selection nice and varied. There is a garden but it was raining so can't comment but imagine on a sunny warm day it would be nice to eat outside.

We recently held a family wake here. The chequers sorted everything for us. The food was excellent, bar staff and owner were friendly and very accomodating. It has a lovely tidy garden with tables and chairs. Thankyou.

This is my local pub and decided to give it a try for a Sunday roast with my partner and baby. Website looked amazing, pictures of the food etc. Couldn't wait! After placing our order I was a little concerned when the food came out the kitchen withing 2-3 minutes of ordering. To then see what was on the plate. The roast potatoes looked boiled not roasted, the veg, I'm surprised there was anything left of it as it had been so over cooked, the meat all tasted the same and couldn't distinguish what meat was what, the Yorkshire pudding fresh out of the freezer packet and stuffing! My god was literally slop and needed to be consumed using a spoon. I am so disappointed with the meal and pretty shocked it was so bad. On the other hand the staff we very friendly and welcoming. Definitely will not be returning.

Changing this review based on experience last night. Been using this pub for some years now and was happy to support it through the pandemic. But sadly we will not be returning. Had been here for a beer lunchtime in the sunshine and had a good time. Came back about 7pm to get a table for the live music so my wife could join me. The pub was filling up and the air was stale and humid. I had a coughing fit at the table and asked a passing waitress if I could open the window a little. When nothing happened I raised this with the landlord. The rather curt response I got was to tell me that if I had worries about covid I should say at home. This was rude and insulting and worse insensitive given he knew I had been very ill with covid in November. Having spent a lot of money here over the years we will now go elsewhere where our custom is valued and we are treated with respect. Edit 20-3-22 further evidence of disdainful attitude in owner response is assertion I was drunk (untrue). Also hadn't booked any table - read my comment carefully again - so also untrue. Suggest we leave things there.

We had a lovely Sunday roast here this weekend. There were originally 11 of us plus two babies and they were really accommodating at short notice. As it was only 8 if us were able to go. The roast dinner was lovely. I especially love the option of a small or large roast as my mum and my 16 year old don't eat much and normally always made to feel you can't ask for a child portion, so ireally wish more pubs did this. The staff were all really friendly and I would definitely recommend Sunday lunch here.

Good range of beers and lagers on draught - the food is extremely good quality and significantly better than the chain pubs. Chris and the staff are extremely friendly and there has always been a good atmosphere every time I have visited both with friends and family. This is now a pub we go to from choice, not just because it is local. They also have great entertainment on a regular basis.

Very nice meal, reasonably priced. Had a choice of indoor, outdoor or marquee dining. Couldn't work out why the pub was so empty on a bank holiday weekend? The weather, covid - who knows? We dined at 6pm, so possibly ahead of the crowd? Will definitely be back.

Where do I start, cheap ingrediants from Bookers cash and carry = poor quality food but priced high. Poor quality larger due to cutting corners on cleaning pipes. Landlord more intrested in chatting up very young bar staff the only type he employs. Do your selfs a favour and go else where in fact anywhere other than this place.

Nice and quiet when we visited, Monday tea time. Varied simple menu. Freshly cooked so didn't mind waiting.... Delicious food, especially the chips which were red hot! Craft/local beer choice small but ok! Will consider a return visit.

Brilliant outdoor seating and staff are extremely pleasant and helpful.

We have just ordered a Takeaway Roast Turkey Dinner which was fresh, hot, tasty, good portion size and well presented in a foil tray and wrapped in cling film. We telephoned the venue and they stated they were doing this service up until 4pm with a choice of beef or turkey. We selected a pick up time and paid upon collection. Everything was ready. This was a real treat as we had been unable to have any sort of christmas due to illness. We will definitely have this again especially in Lockdown.

We ordered a Christmas roast whilst we was in tier 4 as Christmas plans hadn’t gone to plan. We ordered the turkey roast and it was amazing. Easy and fast communication through their Facebook page and we paid when we collected our food at the allocated time. The portions were perfect and it all tasted great. We even got a extra little surprise mince pie which was a lovely touch. All served in a foil tray So it kept warm till we got home. Would definitely recommend.

Been coming to this pub for many years - originally as it was the closest to home, but now because it is an excellent Pub with Chris and a great team running it. Food is keenly priced and really good quality - my whole family really likes the pub and even on the evening walks which pass other establishments we normally wait to visit here. Really missed it during lockdown, and rather than just turn up blindly when it re-opened I 'sussed it out first' - sadly many places clearly don't understand Social Distancing, and several I have refused to visit - thankfully the Chequers isn't one of them, it is spotlessly clean, every time we have been there the staff have been cleaning again, plenty of space, indoor and additional outside seating to ensure the rules are followed, details taken, and hand sanitiser at the door. Probably one of the best establishments I have been in for this. In addition I have often met friends in town for a drink prior to lockdown, and since then the suggestion has always been the Chequers not just because I like the pub, but because it feels safe! Now looking forward to when live music returns - fingers crossed.

Visited a couple of Sundays ago for a sunday roast. All looked nice when we walked in not very many people for a Sunday so we found a table and got some drink eventually after calling over the tallish woman behind the bar who seemed reluctant to come to us (covid regs table service only???) Eventually got some drinks and started to look at menu and surrondings lots of signs on bar about do not stand at bar and lots of people just standing at the bar drinking and chatting with the woman behind the bar who clearly was fliriting with somebody who looked young enough to be her son. Hubby used the loo no social distancing or signs in there apparently. No social distancing markers of the floor either. I watched bar person serve many drinks etc at not time did she wash her hands or ask anyone to move away from the bar. We left as soon as possible and will not return. I have reported the pub to envormental health as clearly they dont care hopefully they will be shut down before the cause a local lock down.

Lovely Sunday lunch, with friendly staff. We will be back again.
