Chennai Dosa in Swindon

Called in for an early supper, the place filled quickly. The waitress was attentive and helpful . My Samber Vadai arrived promptly and was delicious . Followed by a generous Masala Dhosa. The menu was very suitable for vegetarians. Would visit again if in town, so much nicer than the usual 'curry house ' food. Reasonably priced.

I had a very frustrating experience at Chennai Dosa in Birmingham. We waited for over 30 minutes without anyone coming to take our order. Despite three waiters passing by and telling us that someone would come soon, no one ever showed up to assist us. It felt like we were completely ignored, even though the restaurant wasn't overly busy at the time. The lack of attention and basic customer service was disappointing, and it really ruined the entire experience. I expected better from a place that usually has decent food. Definitely won't be returning if this is how they treat their customers. Saturday 13.55pm

Ordered food at 6PM nearly £60 worth, and an hour and forty minutes later it still hadn't arrived. No answer when trying to call them, and no expectation of the food being hot when it does arrive, as the app tells me the driver arrived forty minutes ago.

We have been eating here for the past six months regularly. We’ve never had a bad meal. The staff fantastic and the food is excellent. It is incredible value for money, you could not make this food for the prices they charge and we always walk away and talk about how good the food was for the next few hours.

Following a small pub crawl in Old Town with my Nephew and it's another day, another curry. This time, shared Gobi 65 and Gobi Manchurian for starters (cauliflower cooked two ways), followed by Chicken Chettinadu (awesome) for my main with rice and shared breads although cannot remember what they were called.

We popped in here for a quick lunch dosa on a rainy day. There was just one other couple in the restaurant, but others also came in to collect takeways. We ordered a dosa and a masala tea each. We enjoyed what we had. Service was friendly and efficient. Well priced. We would definitely go back again.

Ordered too much food because the Dosa were much bigger than I remembered. All of the food was great and the bill was really reasonable. It feels authentic and the staff were very friendly and helpful.

Overpriced with pathetic service. Filthy interior and flat idlis. Took way long to serve idlis. The restaurant also had many screaming children.

We reached the restaurant at 11:15 for breakfast buffet. There were no food in the counter. They kept on saying the bowls will be refilled with few things here and there. My son kept on waiting for pooris and finally 12 , they said buffet time is over. Extremely anguished. I wish I could negative rating here

Visited Chennai Dosa Today with my girlfriend, Was greeted by the Assistant Manager and a young lady. They had numerous varieties of Dosa and other dishes. It’s been a while since I ate good food away from home. My girlfriend absolutely loved it. Would blindly recommend Chennai Dosa to anyone who wants to taste good Chennai food

We ourself over years had many restaurants across south England and We were looking forward to eating at this restaurant, we entered about 12:20 noon for Lunch, immediately we were greeted by a young lady and taken to table/menus. The restaurant was empty and cold, the older person incharge for the session was walking from one heater fan to another trying to keep warm, that's all he was doing. Anyway, order was taken promptly, we were hungry and ordered four dishes between the two of us, the potatoes in our masala dosa was cold and stale, my wife's favourite dish Chana Baturra, was very watery, no taste, by the look of the Chana Batura dish I knew we would have food poisoning if we consume. the puri breads were tough like rubber! (not crispy) Massala Chai was nothing like I ever tasted before and cold. Medu wadda were raw from inside. Big mistake I said to my wife, never will we think about eating Dosa and South Indian food here! I complained to that older person trying to keep warm near electric heater, just muttered I'll tell the Chef, We hardly had anything to eat from the disgusting food served to us, everything was uneaten on the table, No body came over to ask how the food was, I think they clearly know the quality of the food served here being Indian themselves, Any way we asked for the bill and were charged full amount, in-spite I telling them the food is dangerously inedible, again the lady said I'll tell the Chef, We just wanted to get out of this restaurant so we paid and left with bad taste in our mouths. Being in this industry all my life I cannot believe that some places are allowed to trade with such appalling low standards or no standards.

We have had takeaway quite a few times and never had a problem we reallly enjoyed the food. Ordered a takeaway yesterday Sunday 19th December but when we opened the containers at home they were not full, called and they said they would look into it, called back but could not get through on the phone, so ended up messaging on messenger but no resolution really disappointed a we love the food but on this occasion it wasn’t value for money and out us off going back unfortunately.

We visited this place on a Tuesday evening. The place was almost empty. . We ordered Masala dosa (dosa are Indian crepes, Vadai, Poori Masala. All were good and had good Authentic South Indian taste! There are hardly any good Dosa restaurants in my area back in Devon. I would definitely come back for the Dosas.

Have passed this place many times and finally tried it out last Saturday and so glad we did, the Weekend Buffet was brilliant, we went with some vegetarian friends and they loved it, there was more options for them than there was for me the carnivore, how often can you say that? Very reasonably priced, we had a drink each and all had the buffet, 3 vegetarian 1 meat and the bill was £45 all was delicious, fantastic, we will be back.

Excellent food and service even after the restaurant being really busy with almost at its full sitting capacity! Would recommend chennai dosa to anyone to have a try there. Definitely will visit again.

excellent food. The dosa was new to us and we really enjoyed it. Every dish had distinct flavours. Everything was piping hot and lots of it. Don’t expect posh dining. This is more like a cafe with prices and serviceto match. Great.

Unhappy staff give the restaurant an unpleasant atmosphere which is a great shame as the food is authentic South India and very good. No-one enjoys wearing a mask, but please try to be happy in your work. It makes a big difference to your customers'...

Still been having their wonderful food during lockdown as it’s the best food of its kind in Swindon. Dosas, devil wings, chicken lollipops, spicy butter chicken, chattanandu to name a few off the menu but the quality of food is unbelievable.

We went for lunch they had a good buffet. It was worth going for the buffet. The food tasted so good . Would recommend the buffet.

After 18 years of not seeing friends we met up in Chennai Dolsa as a half way meeting point. Staff were very welcoming and served our party without any pressure to finish up as we were 2+ hours... Food was really delicious and the Sunday...

I was working in Swindon and staying there for 4 days so each day I ate somewhere different. The food here was fantastic the mutton curry is super delicious and the nann bread was the best I ever tasted. Will definitely return here again

Some dishes are good but the actual south indian taste is missing. value of money but taste can be definelty improved.

The big give away was we were the only Anglo Saxons in the joint ! The place was rammed with local Indian folk. An excellent, simple, fresh and tasty lunch buffet. In all my years munching the standard Pakistani / Bangladeshi take on Indian food...

Poor customer service.Staff doesn't have time to take care of the customers.They hardly listen to u and are rude.we asked to get the ice cream confirmed from us to serve it after food.the staff said yes in rush and didn't come back.later when no one came to ask we just finished with food and went to counter for billing.The guy at the billing counter charged the bill including ice cream which we didn't even had and he was completely aware of it.When we asked for bill then they said that u ordered ice cream u can take it home...First of all how could they decide the order when they didn't confirm which ice cream we would like to have.Pathetic attitude of staff!!!!!!

We went as a family of 8 whilst in the area and this was a great little find. Slightly basic interior but don’t let that put you off. The food was tasty and they had good service too. Definitely worth a visit.

Excellent dosa, tasty food with good portion size. Swift to bring food out. We were amazed by how busy this place was at lunchtime. Very reasonably priced.

Although I have eaten here before, the meal presentation is always a delight and I photographed it - I was not the only one. I chose the Chicken Masala dosa which comes as a huge, but very thin and long rolled up pancake with the filling inside. This is accompanied with 3 dips, all of which were tasty and not too strong. Whether you are supposed to eat it with a knife and fork or just tear off sections of the pancake with your hands, I don’t know but it was an enjoyable experience. They do a great mango lassi drink if you want a change from beer.

We do not have any Southern Indian style restaurants near our home, so we were really excited to find this restaurant on a fleeting visit to Swindon, as we have been wanting to try this cuisine.

I went there with few of my friends there and the atmosphere and the staff were super friendly. We asked the staff for some suggestions and they helped us very well, explaining each dish to us and helping us in general. We ordered a mutton biryani, a masala dosa and tandoori chicken. They all arrived very quickly and the food was amazing. It was the best food in Swindon, it was just like the food my mum used to make back in India. i recommend everyone to order the mutton biryani and i will definitely go there many more times.

Went for an evening meal and after being shown to a table, we were ignored for ages. Asked a waitress if we could order drinks who carried on cleaning other tables when she had clearly heard us. She returned eventually to take the drinks order and threw the menus at the table and just stared at us.

It’s not very often we go out for mid Sunday lunch at authentic Indian restaurant but this one is definitely worth a visit for a quick afternoon authentic food for a family. Buffet unlike typical Indian heartless is surprisingly comes as a refreshing change it’s simple but fresh and good flavour. Definitely worth a visit again.

Visited here with few English friends. The Dosa quality and taste was exactly as I have had in South India, perfect mixture of flavours. Delicious food. Small but clean set up. Would certainly visit many more times with more English friends.

There were over 50 Asian people in the restaurant when we arrived and what a fabulous atmosphere. The food was absolutely amazing. There were several dishes that we didn't know about so the server helped us to order. The staff were all friendly and made us feel very welcome. We will definitely be back.

I’ve been to other branches, but Swindon one has to be the worst one so far. There were hardly any people in the restaurant but food took forever to arrive- 2 dosas don’t take over 30minutes to cook! When we got our food, the chutneys were too salty to eat and Rava Onion Masala dosa looked too white and undercooked. Not impressed at all.

After my disastrous experience at the Slough outlet , this one was a welcome change.

Popped in for lunch - Great curry rice combo - place was full and I was the only non-Asian. What a recommendation. "I'll have what he is having" was the best option on the menu.

Love going to Chennai Dosa as the menu is a little different and cheaper then your normal curry house. The chilli prawn / or paneer is a great option. try a dosa and make sure you order some meat as most dishes are veggi

The menu is different from most Indian restaurants we've experienced and the fact that most diners were Asian speaks volumes for the authenticity of the food. Great tastes and not expensive. We'll be back.

The food is the most authentic South Indian food you can find anywhere in Swindon. Tasty and well priced. But sometimes, when it’s not too busy, they tend to give ‘not so fresh’ food which is a bit of a concern.

Reasonably priced and good south Indian food in Swindon. They do Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner. Me and my family just love Chennai Dosa.

It is a great sign when a restaurant is full at lunch time and if it is an Indian restaurant when 90% of those eating there are Indian or Bangladeshi.

Swindon has a crap choice of restaurants. Most are Indian and serving the same food. Dosa is refreshingly different. Authentic and very scrummy. Friendly nice staff offering good service. Highly recommended... if you absolutely have to be in Swindon... !

This is one of the best places in swindon to eat authentic asian food. The chef is from a 5 star hotel and the food is very well priced. What makes this place even better is their staff who are also very authentic! :)

I ordered masala paneer dosa, and there was only mashed potato in the dosa and no paneer. I asked the waitress where the paneer was and she showed me an extremely small amount of grated paneer which was sprinkled over the potatoes. Apparently in the menu they have stated that the paneer is grated, well in that case they seriously need to change the name of the dish!!! Not happy and felt deceived. Also it certainly was not spicy as described!

Fancied something different from the usual treat of a saturday morning bacon sarnie. Saw Chennai Dosa have a breakfast buffet. Popped in on saturday morning and was made to feel very welcome instantly.

We visited this little place as a treat prior to the theatre. We informed the staff that we had tickets and they made sure everything arrived promptly. The restaurant is small but well laid out, drinks are not over priced and they have a selection of wines. The food is incredible, the staff advised of what to try based on what we said we liked and I had a amazing starter of mushrooms and a crepe for main my husband had a cheese starter and main they were so large we could have shared and still been full. The value for money is excellent. Great service with a smile and clean. It is not a typical Indian but it is a regional style dishes and well worth a go, a meal for two with drinks and two courses was under 30.00, so not an expensive evening if it is not for you.

Once again we visited this restaurant and we were not disappointed tasty food and good service on a negative issue once again space limited too many customers in a small area it certainly needs to look for larger premises as it’s popularity grows to accomodate it’s customers - when we visited there was a problem with the taps so could not wash our hands this needs to be sorted very unhygienic especially when dealing with food however the vast array of dishes and good service will definately tempt us to visit again.

I love this restaurant, it’s a traditional well made authentic food. If you want to taste food that you could expect from India/Sri Lanka then Chennai Dosa is the closest your get being in Britain. The food is so flavorsome and the spices just dance on your tongue. The buffet at lunch is good and the Dosa’s are the best ever. The chefs cook everything to perfection and you will not be disappointed.

I visited this place during my business trip as I like South Indian food. They didn't disappoint me. The food was amazing. I had lamb sukka and chilli parotta. I will visit soon.

I visited this restaurant with 2 friends. Food was good, we all had masala dosa. Don’t expect fine dine experience where you sit for few hours and chat. It’s place to go have quick food and come out quick. No complaints though as that’s what we were after. It is great value , 3 drinks and 3 masala dosa we paid around £25 which is pretty good price.

Owner of this place, please decide whether you want do sell south Indian Tiffin or focus on non veg restaurant. If you go the south Indian way, people would like to come and enjoy Idli, Vada, Dosa, Chutney, Sambar etc. If you want to do a non veg stuff, do a fine dining....Realize that you are not able to manage and not able to attract either of those crowd. You have an amazing staff, and food tastes good....why confuse?

We ate here last night and the food was just so good . Having moved from South London our expectations of South Indian food is very high. We were not at all disappointed, it was fabulous. The waiter and the waitress were excellent with a sense of fun. We had two starters two masala Dohsa a chicken and spinach curry to naans and 3 pints of beer and the bill was £45 .

We were 5 of us and we ate out stomach full for under £50. Now that is a very good value for your money given that this place is situated right in the city centre and does not have much competition around. The dosas were very good and so was the Gobi Manchurian, butter milk, Paneer butter masala, rotis and Dal. The place is also very clean and the service was quick as well.

We are Chennai Dosa "regulars" - occasionally eat in - but mostly take-away - and we love their food. When planning my 60th birthday the family noticed that Chennai Dosa are now offering outside catering - so we booked Christchurch Community Hall and got in touch with the lovely people at Chennai Dosa. It worked brilliantly - and our guests loved the fresh, tasty food. A highlight was "live-cooked" Dosas and Uthapams.. enjoyed by everyone from our two year old granddaughter, to my 93 year old father-in-law. We had lots of "Thank you" cards that mentioned the superb food. The Chennai Dosa staff were helpful and professional - and they left the kitchen so beautifully tidy that the lady from Christchurch who "closed up" was keen to know who had catered. Thank you very much to all the Chennai Dosa staff.

Dropped in today for the first time for some lunch and it was lovely. They have a lot of things on the menu that I hadn't heard of the before, the kind waitress was great at explaining what everything was. I had a massive spicy and light dosa, at first look I didn't think I'd finish, but as it was so light and not at all greasy I polished off the whole thing! The dosa came with a trio of dips, one lentil one spicy and one fresh tasting one- I should have asked what it was. I also ordered a doughnut type dumpling which was crisp and light also. I will definitely be returning to try more of the menu. If you are a veggie or vegan, go.

My partner and I were hungry and or for some lunch and decided to stop by here. It had been recommended sometime ago by a family friend and thought we had better try. Very friendly staff greeted us at the door on a Monday afternoon.

First time I ate here and it was so much more than expected. Friendly staff who had a lot of patience, really fresh, light, non greasy dosa which isn't easy to find. I've been to lots of dosa places. If you don't mind basic seating and a non luxurious setting than try this restaurant especially for dosa.

The food was cold and service was too slow, staff seem to have a lethargic approach withe the request placed. Taste wise also it didnt satisfy a truly south indian style.

I was craving for some Indian food and we went in Chennai dosa. They have non vegetarian dosa aswell. But we tried the masala dosa and it was very tasty. There are also Chinese items served on the menu and also tandoor!

I absolutely love dosas so had to give this place a try while staying one night in Swindon. I’m so glad I didn’t eat at the hotel, the food was delicious and freshly prepared. I had a cauliflower starter which sweet and spicy and cooked with just the right crunch to it. The dosa was huge, very filling and utterly delicious.

The food is superb, I love authentic Indian food and this place has it in abundance. It's the first time I've been and it will not be the last. The staff are pleasant and very helpful.

Been to Chennai Dosa in Swindon to appease my craving for a masala dosa. The food was great and the service was top notch. Liz, our hostess, was very professional and had a pleasing personality which made our experience even better. We live over 60 miles away from Swindon but the food was totally worth the drive.

We went on Sunday for lunch and they had buffet. It was very good and we enjoyed it. We had come but late but staff allowed us to eat and put 2 plate of biryani on our table. So it was very good.

Its my first ever review on Trip Advisor. Today, I’m but forced to share my experience. I’ve been in Swindon from past 12 yrs and experienced this restaurant with change of management numerous times. Quality time of food was on & off BUT from past successively 4 visits and take away it proved that they possibly don’t care of customers or actually satisfied with the business they are doing. I have had experienced rude behaviour from the staff and really terrible food. Spending 10s of pounds on such a pathetic food is really painful. I would certainly not recommend this and visit this restaurant anymore.

The food here is the main selling point in my view. I have been reliably informed that menu is authentic of the region it originates from. There was a wide choice of thing to eat and I will have to return to try more. The atmosphere was relaxed and a great place to meet for small groups wanting to chat. Also good vegetarian options

Excellent food, great service. Best restaurant so far in England. We visit this restaurant almost every other week.

I came here with friends, it's not what I was expecting at all, usually I look at the menu in an indian and can decide in seconds, but I was a bit confused by a totally different menu. The waitress came over when she saw us struggling and talked us through it, we made our decissions and ordered. The food came out and it was great, totally different to what I've had before, not your usual curry, rice and bread, but a big crepe thing with a filling and other dippy sides. I would recommend giving this place a try if you like something a little different.

Returned here last Saturday. We shared Tandoori Chicken for starter, really great very spicy just as I like it. This was followed by Chicken Masala Dosa, this is very different from any Indian food I've had before so next stop has to be Kerala, Kochi or Goa for a holiday. Staff especially the girls are really welcoming and friendly.

My son dances in Swindon once a year, I go to the final show on the Sunday and after finding this fab restaurant the first time I have returned every year. I have never had such fabulous food in an Indian restaurant. The choices are different to the standard Anglo Indian options. There are lots of vegetarian dishes, the coconut relish is amazing and the idlys are fab! Staff are lovely and make recommendations. Prices are reasonable, and my sister in law who has travelled extensively in India said this was the closest she has had to food when she was there. I wish I lived closer, it's amazing!

I was there in June with 7 other people from work. We had been to other Indian places in town before, but never to this one.Small and unassuming, to be honest we were a bit hesitant coming in.Food was great. All dishes extremely generous, including appetizers. As a matter of fact, some appetizers would easily pass as main courses in other restaurants.Dosas, which I had never tasted before, were an interesting discovery. They are like a crossover between a pancake and a crepe. You are supposed to eat them with fillings or just scoop up some sauces.Service with a huge smile. Very few mistakes made - if any at all. Not easy considering the large noisy party we were. Highly recommended.

We visited this restaurant on good recommendation & it certainly lived up to our expectations- good tasty food variety of dishes all well prepared- love the masala dosa if there was one negative topic I would say the place was too small to accommodate the visitors & the seating arrangements were too cramped - could do with brighter lighting as well apart from that the staff we're obiliging & pleasant- we would visit again.

We love it here. Not only is the food authentic (delicious and spicy), it's such good value for money, we just keep returning. I did once have a bad experience with the buffet (didn't top up the dishes when empty). However, this time I gave the buffet another go and it was wonderful!

Dosa + Sambhar, start with the Masala dosa or Plain Dosa for the uninitiated They now take plastic for orders over 20£.

We visited on a Saturday after a recommendation by friends. We were warned that the restaurant is not particularly smart - more of a café style. But the food was amazing and so reasonably priced. The staff were really helpful and the menu is extensive. Next time I think we might be more adventurous and try something different. By 8.30 every table was taken and by Indian families so that speaks volumes on the quality of the food.

I try and make it here every other Tuesday as my wife works late and for the price and quality you cannot go wrong.Hot Dosa, chicken chattanadu, garlic bread and pint of Kingfisher for £13 is money well spent. I have reviewed this before but the quality of food is worth mentioning every time.Always has Goans and Indians in here as the food I am told is authentic south Indian cusine.Quick and friendly service. Newly opened, very disappointed, dosas were cold, not enough chutney and dal for the amount of dosa no refills were made. Also ordered gobi manchurian which had 5 small florets not thoroughly cooked and with full dinner price!!! Will not be visiting again!!!!
