Being used to London prices I ventured upon this establishment which is in an indescript building. Cacio e Pepe for 2 ( which was runnier than one would hope) a tiny Vodka 'cocktail' glass of wide and 2 of the smallest deserts ever, cost £56 Clearly there is something out of equilibrium - prices need to drop for the quality/venue by at least 40%

Absolutely loved this restaurant. Extremely friendly service, great ambiance and delicious food. Something a bit different, wouldn’t hesitate to go back.

My go to spot at any time of day - perfect coffee and baked treats hand made on the premesis every morning in the bakery upstairs. A quick plate of pasta again made from scratch in house, and soft drink at lunch. Or a blow out evening meal with seasonal small plates, pasta, the showstopping tiramisu and low intervention wine or a Vault spritz again, you guessed it, distilled on the premesis. A lot of reviews mention the pricing - for me it is reflective of the quality of ingredients, skill of the chefs and bakers, and hospitality of the serving staff. All of which is absolutely on point.

A cool cafe and great restaurant, providing great coffee, cakes, sausage rolls, sharing plates and pasta. Very friendly staff. Great location next to the St Mary’s medieval church, and close to the Saffron Walden Museum and Fry Art Gallery. Well behaved dogs welcome.

The venue is very nice. The food is pretty good and well presented. The drinks are good. The location is a little random. But something does not work. It is too expensive to be a regular haunt. The dishes are too small if I am actually hungry. I feels like it is trying a bit too hard to be cool. I don't own either a small beanie hat or a plaid shirt. Less being cool. More food. Less money. Sometimes less is more. Unless we are talking about food.

Overrated, overpriced, and particularly rude owner who I witnessed berating his staff unnecessarily. Would never return or recommend.

Owner aggressively approached my friend and I and made a rude comment about our children holding a drink from another store. When I tried to explain, our children were actually just collecting their phone and not staying the owner instead of apologising for his error, he began arguing and being rude. We left without finishing our food and drinks and will never return. Saffron Walden is a small Town and as a fellow business owner this is not a way to treat customers, particularly children with SEN! Shame on you. Met someone on the way out who said the same and shared their experience of the owner too.

An interesting restaurant with an interesting and quirky menu which was very reasonably priced and a change from the norm. The staff were really helpful, service was quick and the place had a nice feel about it. The food was on the main really good, lovely fresh bread and loved the cheese with coffee. The only thing that really didn't work for me was the pasta with mackerel but everything else was great.

Walden desperately needs decent places to eat in the evening, but for me this isn’t it. Staff are friendly and the service is good, but what’s on offer is overpriced. Some bread to nibble on came with the smallest smear of butter; a serving of pate was surprisingly generous but bread to have with it had to be ordered, and paid for separately. The Cacio e pepe, which is simply spaghetti, pepper, cheese and butter was £11 for a ‘small plate’ and was unremarkable. The wine is expensive and unlike many establishments, the list does not give any guidance or tasting notes. I enjoyed my evening because I was with friends but I feel in general Chaters promises quite a lot but under delivers.

Great evening with brilliant service from our very attentive waiter on my birthday Yes prices are high but the negroni knocked my socks off, the pardon peppers were like none other (not usual bitterness) and the carbonara my son said was the best hed ever tasted! 4 of us had 6 sharers and 3 pastas. My mum was less impressed with the beefsteak with chip fins thinking it would be warm (and a steak!)but was so lovely atmosphere we all had a good giggle about her expectations versus fair in this kind of restaurant Topped by the openness to serve my birthday cake and sing to me as a desert I was very touched. They really are going all out to please Thankyou

Really lovely restaurant with such tasty food! We shared some of the small plates as starters which included Tomato Tonnato, the Asparagus dish and the burrata - all were so tasty. For main I had the Caico e pepe, which was such a highlight for me - didn't want it to end! For dessert, we shared the tiramisu which was of course, delicious. Had absolutely no faults with our experience, the staff were friendly, the food was tasty and nice chill atmosphere in there. Will 100% be returning when in the area!

We had lunch for my daughters birthday - excellent service and the room itself has an industrial vibe with recycled furniture which had a great mid century look - between the three of us we shared 3 starters and 3 pasta mains - all really tasty and making the best out of fresh produce! The wine is a little on the expensive side for 125ml but they tasted fabulous - finally we had dessert (tiramisu and treacle tart the tart with an excellent hazelnut ice cream. £55 a head but considering the quality- good value would definitely return!

Friendly and relaxed cafe with good coffee and bakes. However my trip today was totally spoilt by having to share with customers with 3 small yappy dogs, one large barking dog and one huge white fluffy dog drooling onto a nearby table. I do not see why non dog owners have to have their conversations interrupted by constant barking. Slobbering dogs are a health hazard.

The staff are excellent ,the food was very good. the wine was extortionate and you can't buy half carafes , as advertised on their web site. The food and staff were excellent but the service charge and drink prices killed it for us. This was the most expensive lunch we've had in a long time.

A very pleasent experience, not too noisy good to chat and relax round very tasty food. Prices could be viewed as high, though I believe the quality of the dishes justify the price.

This place is very popular atm and has quite a buzz. There is much that is right i.e. the atmosphere, the service and the quality of the food; unfortunately, for the portion sizes, the food is overpriced imho as are the drinks. Furthermore, on top of the already overprices, there is a 12.5% service charge. Don't get me wrong, I like the place but feel that perhaps, once the Grace Dent effect has died down, this venue might struggle.

On analysis and reflection I’d have to say we enjoyed our visit and the experience and left happy. Similar thoughts however as many have discerned as to costing and portions which make it pricey and then there’s a service charge to boot. The staff were very attentive and one didn’t have to wait for food or drinks but getting the bill sorted was slow. Considering it was very busy we got well looked after. Interesting and eclectic food but felt a bit taken advantage of. For instance a slice of sourdough and butter with our pate (£8) was inadequate so we asked for more which came in the form or a wedge of focaccia at £3.95 extra. Wine by the (sherry size ) glass at £8 I felt needed to be exceptional but it was nearly undrinkable. Similarly sized Chardonnay chilled beyond flavour at £10. Coffees good and cakes very nice and better priced. Great to see something different in our town but you are paying dearly for the vibe here despite it getting a national review recently.

Marvellous lunch for four, dog friendly and most hospitable. All home-made and presented food from the focaccia, butter and pasta to the sweets and sauces. The ham hock had all the wonderful flavours of the Lincolnshire delicacy of Stuffed Chine and the pasta dishes were amazing. Eat elsewhere at your peril.

The food was nice.. portions very pricey . I left still feeling I could have eaten more ( we had 7 dishes between three of us! ) drinks are extortionate..£9.00 for a gin and tonic. But my real bug bear was two things.. firstly no cash accepted at all. Secondly the 12% service charge added .. we are not in America where service charge makes up for poor wages and I would not go back on these points. Expensive night out.

Amazing setting, 11/10 service and delicious food. They have really smashed it. This is our 6th time here and each time we love it as much as the last. You’re made to feel very comfortable and welcome from the off. The selection of drinks is very versatile and the food menu always knocks it out the park. We can’t wait to go back!

Feelings are mixed. Dearly wanted to love it and the first impression of the environment and enthusiastic waiting staff was positive. But, after the initial excitement of that, the coffee pecorino cubes, which felt genuinely innovative, and a delicious sausage circle, there was a sense that this was style over substance, and at a cost. A £6 grape juice spritz and three thin slices of tomato on top of a small allowance of tonnato probably say it all. So too, the incredibly over-salted Carbonara, which we all felt the effect of the morning after, and a tiramisu that had a gritty sponge in it rather than traditional lady fingers. That sponge, which had the air of leftovers, could also have done with some (or more) Marsala. Overall, at a cost of close to £150 including service for two adults, two children, it makes us ponder whether we’d return. At the current time, probably not.

We went for dinner and enjoyed all the food & drink. We had their small plates (burrata, pecorino with honey and coffee, fresh bread with burnt butter and gordal olives), fresh pasta dishes (bucatini carbonara and bigoli alla nerano), natural wine (white and rosé), desserts (tiramisu and Happy Endings ice cream sandwich), Vault aperitivo and Wood Street coffee. It’s a fantastic setting and service was friendly and welcoming. Such a great vibe!

Delicious modern local food and great staff in a relaxed setting. Casual coffee/lunch or a swankier dinner with house-made spirits. Takes Saffron Walden into the 21st century.

After rave reviews elsewhere I’m really struggling to see what it’s all about - coffee and cakes maybe but supper was abysmal! After struggling to get a reso we were sat by a very friendly waitress…. Then it went wrong. A bread basket was literally one piece of bread cut in half and a finger of focaccia. We went for pasta, which was served on a saucer… and the pecorino serving was laughable. The pasta certainly didn’t seem to be home cooked and whilst we appreciate it is tapas esk….. you would be up in the £100’s to depart satiated and elsewhere for the price of a plate of pasta - you get a plate of pasta, not a pasta tapas. In HMO be very cautious of the amazing Guardian review - they must have known they were coming! Credit where it’s due - the coffee is good.

Brilliant independent restaurant celebrating locally sourced produce. Simple menu which aims not to overwhelm or over complicate. Service was spot on and the staff were great. It’s hard to not walk away with smile on your face talking about how good the experience was.

First visit to this hidden gem didn't dissapoint. An imaginative menu showcasing artisan produce. Small plates options were well priced with some unusual flavour combinations that really worked. The friendly team are clearly passionate about what what they do, their enthusiasm is right there in every morsel, I could quite happily have eaten my way through the entire menu! Decor is a laid back, comfortable cocoon. Tables are well spaced, lighting & music at just the right level.

Lovely Pub. Outdoors has been recently upgraded and it shows. Food is currently Smash Burgers, which are great. Onion fries served alongside are a bit lacklustre. Good beers and pretty efficient staff. Will certainly go back. Only criticism is the number of young children who seem to have been left to entertain themselves. Not the pubs fault.

The pub was very busy when we arrived and extremely noisy. Happily we found a small area towards the back of the restaurant where a lovely gentleman named David was working. Welcoming people and taking orders. Such a gentleman. Calm, efficient, took the time to explain ways of payment. A noisy group of youngsters were spoken to quietly, immediate reduction in volume. Our food arrived surprisingly quickly considering how busy it was. Everything was hot, cooked well, and nicely presented, 2 drinks, fish and chips, ham, mushroom pizza plus side salad, £42, happy with that. And excellent service, thank you David x

Very disappointed!! We had a family meal booked here in November when we managed to get in contact with the pub (they never answer email's or the phone) After hearing the Chef had left. We was told that there was nothing they could do and wasn't anything to do with them! even though that it was a member of staff that took the booking and didn't even think about letting us know that they was no longer doing food!. Thankfully a local from the village has put us in contact with the chef and we have rearranged our family meal with him at a different location. Very poor management and bad experience!!

A lovely bar! We stopped for a few drinks on Friday night, the staff were super welcoming and happy to help. The cocktails were great, there was a brilliant selection and they were well priced.
