Having recently moved into the delightful Saffron Walden we quickly discovered the equally delightful Market House. A few introductory cocktails one evening and a very warm welcome from the charming Charlotte ensured several return visits. Great lunchtime tapas, vibrant evenings and always a warm welcome introducing several friends and family to our newly discovered watering hole. However a quick visit one Friday, meeting up with husband after a week away from each other and a very different picture greeted us. A not very warm welcome from the young man behind the bar but we happily caught up with our week over a drink in the front bar area. The other guests including a young family were chatting away but we became very aware of the foul language and loud voices coming from them - quite horrified that this was in front of 3 young children never mind other guests. If this had been our first visit we most certainly would have never returned and certainly not brought any guests with us. So will we return I wonder - the jury remains out!!!

Great place to have a drink with your friends, it could do with more sitting space outside, but it is the closeness to other tables, on those very rare British warm days, that make this place special

Best night out in saffron Walden and they do a great selection of tasty tapas!

Lucky find on a cold and windy lunch time, excellent lunch of brie and cranberry ciabbata , husband had the same but with bacon. Came with fries and coleslaw and was delicious and lovely presentation. Staff super friendly. Surprised is was so quiet at lunchtime as it seemed to be a little gem with lots of things on the menu to tempt. Boards advertising fun events in evenings, shame we were only passing through.

Shocking service. Took over an hour and a half for a salad and a ham and cheese “ciabatta” sandwich, which turned out to be just white cheap bread with a slice ham and a couple tomatoes. Will not be going back. Also the queue was too long to even complain after we had already complained to the waiter who never came back. And it cost £28!!

I have to say I never liked the venue prior to new management. BUT now thanks to Charlotte and her team, it's warm and welcoming for all age groups. The vibe is so friendly, relaxing and fun. They really have made it a great place (and for us oldies) the ambience is radiance of the service and entertainment put on is totally relaxed. At 44yrs old I feel like I'm 21 again. That's never gonna happen, but my point is, that you can just go with the flow and fit right in. CHARLOTTE and her team have turned it around to be a place to wine and dine, plus party. The cocktails are amazing too. It's a must for visitors and tourists x

What a great friendly fun happy place to go in saffron Walden, slight hi. Up with the last chef I believe but all back to normal now with fantastic food , won’t find better .and the evenings and weekends are the best in her3 with music most weekends, lovely happy staff , and fantastic manageress makes you fe£l very very welcome and at home and nothing is too much trouble thsnkyou, oh and the best cocktail makers in town , lots of offers and events

What a fantastic wine and tapas bar hidden in saffron walden essex….staff are polite, welcoming and attentive, the food is just so good something for everyone, beautifully presented, the atmosphere is perfect for business lunches or ladies that lunch, the do takeaway coffees and foid also, , and in the evenings and weekends there is always something on, music wise, or drag bingo even painting tuition.., the6 create either a happy day time atmosphere or vibrant night time up beat mode….really is the place to be in saffron walden you won’t be disappointed , fir a great time, parties of all sizes catered for, love it

Visited Sat 8th April. Great atmosphere, lovely welcome and nice cocktails. Incredible tapas, the best we've had. A very trendy place to be but felt very comfortable even though we were a bit older. Fabulous place, loved it. Thank to all staff for being fantastic at your jobs.

Great venue for a gathering with loads of outdoor space and a good selection at the bar.

Amazing dishes on the tapas menu but be warned portions are enormous. ....not complaining it was so tasty and they do special offers mid week so definitely recommend you check it out.

Great drinks, and a lovely atmosphere.

Emailed in advance to order food for a party of 30 as requested, never received any confirmation despite the email containing numerous questions about the food, timings etc. Then Served the food for our party on the night an hour early before anyone arrived despite coming in 3 days prior to let them know the time people would be arriving, excuse from the manager - “it’s been a busy week”, no apology or refund of any sort offered. Great place for drinks but the management is poor and frankly unfriendly

Booked a table for dinner, three people. And I have never left a restaurant so fast, this place shouldn't even be called a restaurant to be honest. It's more like a bar/nightclub. No one cared to ask us if we're ready to order and it was very hard to get any attention as all the staff cared for is the party at the back. We were really hungry, waited 30 min and when it finally arrived it wasn't a proper meal. The shared platter that my boyfriend ordered was the only decent amount of food out of the three orders. The atmosphere would have been nice if it wasn't for a group of people entering the place constantly trying to build a DJ booth at the back. We were seated by the very doors with uncomfortable chairs and a really low table. Ended up going to McDonald's at the end. This place is a waste of time and money unless you want the bar experience. So, if your looking for a place to have dinner, this place isn't it.

Service was a little slow on drinks, and there was no 'customer is always right' attitude and we were met with an argument when complained about one drink.. overall this a nice place to have a drink with a good atmosphere

Great beer in chilled environment

Husband had booked us in for our anniversary dinner, especially looking forward to their Tapas. On arrival (it was a Thursday evening), the place was very quiet, and we were told that there was no food being served today. We ended up having a pint and a cocktail. Hubby was happy with his beer, however I was left disappointed with my cocktail, the glass being half-full and the cocktail not at all tasking like it was supposed to be. We are debating if we will give Market House another try.

A brilliant selection of cocktails, warm and inviting aesthetics. Great variety of tapas as well that go down a treat. The staff were very attentive and friendly, always checking in with you making sure everything is good. Would highly recommend if you're in the area and they also do takeaways which is great for when you want some fine dining at home!

DON'T BOOK HERE THEY HAVENT BOTHERED TO LET ANYONE KNOW THEY'RE CLOSED. We made a booking for a dinner reservation about three days before we were due to visit. Received a confirmation email for the booking. When we arrived at the restaurant (stood outside in the pouring rain), it was closed. At no point during the booking process or on the restaurant's website did it state the place was permanently closed. Really upset. Thank fully there was a better place called Maze by Day, Meze by Night. Go there, their food is delicious, the staff are lovely and more importantly, they're open!

We made a booking online (as we do not live in Saffron Walden) to visit Market House about 4 days ago. There was nothing on the website or the booking page to say they were closed. The system processed our booking and we received a confirmation email for the same. When we arrived on the night (standing outside in the pouring rain) it was closed, lights off, blinds down, very obviously closed. This was supposed to be a treat for my birthday so we were very upset. Thankfully, there was a lovely little restaurant nearby called Maze by Day, Meze by Night. Book your dinner there, not at Market House. Their food is lovely, the staff are too and more importantly, they're open!

We went for half price drinks (Wednesday offer) and the drinks were lovely and the staff were perfectly pleasant but there seemed to be only one person mixing drinks so service was extremely slow. We also ordered some water with our first round but it didn't come until the 3rd time we reminded the waiter because the staff were clearly very busy.

Had a fantastic evening! Cocktails and Food were spot on. They were also able to make some cocktails on request that weren’t on the menu 👍🏻 Service was great, didn’t have to wait or go to the bar to be served! Faultless

Had a lovely lunch here on Saturday, great Tapas, really enjoyed the squid and the prawns in chorizo. Great selection of gins. Only criticism is the tables are so small, we all felt really squashed in.

I have been to the market house many times and have even been for staff events. Usually the service is good and the staff are friendly. Last night, I booked a table so my partner and I could have a few drinks in there. As we arrived, they apparently didn’t have our reservation... I had email for proof that I had done this through opentable. We suggested taking a table near the door to help them out and there was no apologies at all for this. We then ordered drinks and the woman behind the bar was incredibly miserable and just rude. When you are paying a lot more than the local Wetherspoons and are trying to support the local businesses, I find this service quite unbelievable. To add insult to injury, a group of her friends turned up and she was stood at the toilet door shouting in at them. Awful service and such a shame. To reiterate a small business like this should have much better service and staff that actually look like they care! In fairness, most of the staff are OK.. it was just this person on the night. I will be very interested to see what happens in the future because they look too comfortable in their jobs and clearly don’t care about the customers!

Relaxed bar atmosphere for tapas and socialising. Friendly staff and quick service. Outdoor area and indoor , both pleasant spaces. Lots of events offered so look forward to evening sometime although mostly gone afternoons so far.

I was expecting great things after reading the reviews, but found the whole experience disappointing. I had booked via the book a table option on the website, but when I arrived, there wasn’t a booking in my name. Staff seemed sullen and uninterested. We were sat on a table at the back next to a door where everyone went to smoke, seeing as storm Dennis was doing his worst for the evening, this meant the door being continually opened and closed whilst the wind blew in. We were given one menu to share and had to ask for another one! Food came in good time, and was average, chorizo was tasty, but everything else seemed a little bland. The back room has no atmosphere and staff seemed unhappy. I couldn’t wait to leave. My one star is for the chorizo.

Whilst away for the night in Saffron Walden we popped in here fairly early on a Friday evening There were a few seats available so we grabbed a coupleGood job we did , within an hour the front of the bar was packed.Very easy going crowd made you feel comfortable Drinks were a reasonable price and it’s the sort of place I would go to regularly if I lived nearby

Really comfy place for cocktails and food

Called in to the Market house for a lunchtime snack. Decided on the club sandwich and am now planning a long walk to recover. Huge portion size but completely delicious. My wiser companions went for the soup and the salmon bagel. These were equally good and freshly prepared but they need to do a shorter walk. Friendly and prompt service. Also looks like a place for a quiet drink in the evening. Caters for vegetarians and some vegan options. Certainly worth a visit.

We call in for lunch and it is always very good. Staff are very helpful and obliging. Nothing is too much trouble for them. Tapas, salads and sandwiches are always delicious, highly recommend.

My friends an I met up for a regular get together.( We used to meet at The Eight Bells ) It was relatively quiet, and between the five of us we bought 3 bottles of Prosecco @£25 each. We thought we might get complementary nuts or other snack . When I asked ( twice!) I was told ''sorry, no". So we bought crisps@£1.50 each! As a gesture, it would cost little to provide some nibbles . As most wine bars do. What a shame. Oh and the offers on their Facebook site aren't on anymore.

Stumbled across this place whilst visiting the Saturday market and all I can say is wowStopped with my other half for a coffee and ended up diving into the great selection of tapas coming from Spanish heritage this place is truly a testament to a good tapas restaurant/bar!The atmosphere was warm and inviting the decor was very different I believe they used wooden pallet planks to decor the place and tbh it looks fantastic the bar is very different and unique.The staff where friendly polite and smartly dressed.All and all it was a lovely surprise to find such a brilliant place in the area and will be visiting again it is part of a house group with two other bars which I will be making a point of venturing too also. All and all a fantastic place honestly you may or may not take this review BUT GIVE THIS PLACE A GO

Great place in the centre of town. Looks small but bigger inside and a garden.

Food was lovely. Nice cocktails. Good vibe. Only reason it's not 5 stars is because we ordered food with our drinks only to be told when we got our drinks that the kitchen wouldn't open for another hour. Was worth the wait but wish we knew when we had ordered.

A very good place for reasonable priced food

Had my first tapas today in the market house was so pleased and suprised. Lauren was really helpful with the veggie options and food was lovely. Will be back very soon.

Having had a bad day at work I was in need of a pick me up massively so my sister in law and I decided to come here for drinks and some food. The fact that it was half price cocktails was an added bonus! What we didn't realise is that we had to book! But that's fine, we found the small table by the bar a good place to perch and chat, eat and drink! The two barmen on that night were great and added to our evening..... we had a few cocktails between us and some lovely tapas food! Looking forward to coming back on another Wednesday night and we'll remember to book a table next time :)

My daughter had a party for 30 people on a Saturday evening. They laid on the food which was excellent. There was plenty of it and it was beautifully presented. We had a live band playing and their choice of music was perfect for a party. The room we had set aside for us and the outside space was just right for the numbers. Staff were helpful and everyone commented on the food and atmosphere. I’d also like to say I picked up the bill and it was money well spent!

Great selection of drinks (especially Gin!), lovely tapas, attentive staff that provide table service, lovely outside seating area, Live singers on occasions....such a great addition to this market town. Well done.

A chic bar/spot to hang out in Saffron Walden. Great for meeting friends for a few drinks or to visit after eating out in town. Tapas style food available as well as coffee if that's what you are into. Staff were both friendly and helpful.

Nearly 30 I thought I knew what a bacon sandwich was all about until I had one here! Yum Yum! My husband and I have already tried to recreate it at home several times.

I popped in the other day on the off chance they served lunch. They do. Which was a great start. Seats outside in the sun. Even better. Ordered a couple of rounds of sandwiches with sweet potato fries. They arrived on a large board. Well presented with a slaw and well dressed salad. All served in individual terracotta bowls. Even a small bowl of vegetable crisps. Great value for money. Great quality. The sandwich choices are not what you would call traditional. But that is a bonus as they really do work. All round everything was fantastic. Food excellent. Service great too. All table service. It was only a planned light lunch, but it turned into something more. From what could have been viewed as a fuel stop turned into a great little meal. Thank you!

So I've heard so much about this place and visit The Cork House often so it was about time to try the place in the town where I lived.

We had a terrible lunch here with our friends today. Every dish we ordered was nearly inedible and the service was also very poor. We ordered a few tapas dishes which included halloumi with peppers and pesto and fried calamari. My husband ordered poached eggs with bacon.

This is a great place to come with friends for drinks or food . We ordered a couple of the sharing plates and some individual dishes all were delicious. Good drinks choice and great staff .

Had a great light saturday lunch. Very good value for money. Very friendly staff. Not too busy. Will come again.

The drinks are rather expensive

It seems a rather odd place. Tapas style food. I found the chicken thighs very difficult to manage. The only table available was very high, with backless bar stools. It was very uncomfortable. Staff were varied: one didn’t seem able to smile, others fine. They were definitely at their most attentive when they wanted to clear the dishes, and didn’t seem bothered whether we’d finished eating. It wasn’t terrible. It wasn’t brilliant, either.

Went in one evening for a meal, its across between tapas and pub grub in mini sizes. the menu is not very big or any surprize, in fact its a bit pub grub in tapas style. very commercial brought in food. its fun but its not a night out with great food but moresnacks with friends

Tapas food, so is great for a casual night out. The food was great and the service excellent. We went on a Wednesday night so benefitted from it being half price cocktails too. It’s a great addition to Saffron Walden. If I had one criticism it would be the quantity of choices so after a couple of visits the food could get a bit samey unless they change the menu regularly or have specials.

Came here with a friend on a Wednesday night and will definetely be back. From the moment we walked in staff were welcoming and showed us to our table. It was really busy (glad we booked), the half price cocktails on a Wednesday may of had something to do with it!

Popped in for a coffee this afternoon after having visited with friends last weekend. Lovely modern bar with a great selection of cocktails and spirits. Many events being held over the festive period. Friendly bar staff and managers. Highly recommend paying them a visit.

Coming out of a restaurant hungry and dissatisfied is not a good feeling. We waited 1/2 hour for the food and the portions were really small for the price. Not only that but it didn’t taste that much. The waiters were pleasant.

We were wandering around the market, waiting for a table to become free at the seafood bar, and thought we’d have a look. We were pleasantly surprised to find ample outdoor seating, friendly welcoming staff and a good selection of drinks. We didn’t eat there, but we will definitely pop back as it had a nice, relaxed atmosphere.

Visited the Market House with a small group of friends and had a wonderful time! The cocktails are fantastic! Half price on a Wednesday! Properly made and delicious. Staff are friendly and chatty and compliment the modern and trendy vibe. The bar is decorated very tastefully with a great atmosphere with an outside seating area with music. Fab little find, highly recommend. We will be back!

Went here for dinner last night, and what a lovely evening it was!! From the moment we walked through the door to when we left the staff were fantastic, nothing was too much trouble for them and they all seemed to really enjoy their job, which is lovely to see as you don’t see it that often these days. On the food side we had a selection quite a selection of the small plates between the 4 of us and every one was beautiful, nice and hot and full of flavour!! And to top things off they even do 1/2 prices selected cocktails every Wednesday, and they change each week!!

A lovely new venue to visit in Walden...cocktails in town at last!! Lovely ambience, tasteful surroundings, fab staff. Well worth a visit, specially Wednesdays ladies and the live music events

Went for dinner on a Wednesday evening and it was great. The place was quite busy and so there was a bit of a wait for food, however it was worth the wait. It's all tapas and i can highly recommend the Beef Tacos and the Chicken and Avocado as well as the Potatoes. It's really nicely decorated inside and out and i didn't mind the high tables and stools.
