Chater's in Uttlesford

We have been meaning to visit for a while now and it did not disappoint! The food was absolutely delicious, the atmosphere was perfect and the service brilliant. Always one step ahead. Can’t recommend the Vault Negroni, steak tartare, the octopus and deserts (tiramisu and torte caprese) enough. Each dish we tried left that ‘wow’ moment at each first bite. The portions are generous, perfect for sharing if you can’t make your mind up. A beautiful meal out that is definitely up there with the best ones we’ve had. Perfect for a celebration or date night. We’ll be coming back!

Thank you for accommodating 14 of us for a surprise birthday lunch, the bread and butter are always a wonderful highlight. Pasta perfect and wine was delicious, service great.

My favourite local haunt...it feels like going to the home of a good friend. Service is top notch and the menu is always innovative, fresh, and tasty.

Nice place. Couldn't eat my main as it was too salty which was a shame as this was a birthday lunch and I left the restaurant still hungry. The Small plates were good but none of the pasta dishes were any better than you can make at home

An impromptu decision to have lunch on Valentine's day became a warm and lasting experience. The front of house staff were attentive and very helpful and the chef ensured that my wife's anaphylaxis problems were fully addressed. We would fully recommend Chater's to anyone who wants to enjoy freshly cooked food full of flavour in a relaxed atmosphere.

Becoming the in place to go in Saffron Walden - desperately needed - and it brews its own spirits which gives us cocktails with an edge

Fantastic food, the small plates and pasta were delicious. Drinks, especially the forest vermouth, were outstanding and the staff were very helpful and welcoming. Great venue and highly recommend.

Had a wonderful dining experience here with friends. Great food, drink, ambiance and our server, Diego was incredible friendly and knowledgeable. The small plates selection in particular were impressive, with many fun combinations of flavours and takes on Italian classics. The cooking of the pasta was perfect. Will definitely be back for Coffee and a pastry.

Lovely space open plan - can see the kitchen from where you are sat - was served by a wonderful person called Megan who (I think the manager?) was very knowledgable about the food & wine, took time to understand what we were looking for & recommended some lovely dishes. Impeccable service from her. Food was good - additional pasta dish on Thursday was tasty - Music was too loud & choice of music took away from the ambience sometimes. Quite a chilly space but Megan's welcome & warmth made up for it. Thank you Megan!

Nice to have something different in Saffron Walden. We've been on a number of occasions for dinner- it's a really interesting space, great service from friendly people and lovely food. We've also been for coffee & Eccles cake - excellent 👌. Recent glowing reviews are spot on. Looking forward to our next visit. Been for lunch and happy to confirm it's just as good as dinner!! (oh and been for dinner a couple more times too). The people are still delightful Another amazing evening at Chaters for dinner on Saturday 9 March. The food is so good and the service is the best! Amazing food and inventive drinks. Only thing that could have improved the experience would have been if it was warmer. We were seated near the door and kept getting icy blasts of cold air.

Best Restaurant in Walden by a mile - place of choice for dinner on special occasions or a coffee and a cake anytime

Oh wow, what a treat New Years Eve dinner at Chater's was. The food was exquisite, the atmosphere perfect. And all wonderfully hosted by Max and his stellar lovely team. We loved it x

Not a fan of leaving negative reviews but disappointed enough with our experience to feel compelled to. Having received reminders to be on time and that we had to be done by 11pm (we had a 9pm seating for NY eve) we arrived at 8.55pm as requested. We were not alone and the restaurant was packed with people waiting to be seated. We said if we were not seated by 9.20pm we would leave. We eventually got seated at 9.25pm. To be fair we were offered a complementary drink but we were not sure what it was and none us of could drink it. When we were seated we were offered it again but politely declined. It was NY eve and we had a helpful waiter but the food was not good. It is of course highly personal but we all agreed on our table of 4 that a plate of nuts, the cut of cheese, the size you’d leave in a mouse trap as and some salami (as an entrée), was not the usual Chaters experience we have had. It was followed by ‘Bread and oil’ which turned out to be a brioche type bun filled with cold lavender cream. No one ate it. It wasn’t a pleasant taste or texture. We had pinned hopes on the venison, we didn’t know it was raw. Again a personal choice but we were starving and 2 small discs of cold meet with English mustard was not cutting it and most of the family don’t eat raw meat. The cod was good but a 5th cold course. We got the raviolo, our first warm meal and that was also well made. We had paid and opted for the cheese course but by 11.30pm patience warn thin, frustrated, hungry and wanting to get home, we asked for the bill missing the final courses. The waiter apologised and knocked off the wine. However we were still £293 worse off and honestly completely starving and disappointed. We’ve eaten at Chaters on multiple occasions and it is a venue we use for special occasions and to take visiting friends and family to ‘as a treat’. It was NY eve and it was busy but there were either too many covers or not enough staff and the food wasn’t good. It was, I’m told, a first for Chaters but it was a set menu. Had the bill been smaller I would have forgiven the experience but NY family is important and, at tad under £300, we’ll not be going back or recommending which is a shame as Chaters is a family favourite We’ll also be going in to the restaurant as we, in hindsight, think we may been charged incorrectly.

Another fantastic evening. Food amazing, all freshly prepared and cooked and full of flavours on so many levels. We had the beetroot with yoghurt, ham hock and cured salmon small plates. All three stunning and we wanted to lick the plates clean. Followed this with the cacio e pepe pasta which was equally stunning. Final course was an Almond flour chocolate cake with cherries which my partner devoured and said was delicious. I had the lasagne cheese crackers. I haven't had a dessert in years, but the crackers were 'homemade' so how could I resist? In a world full of ultra processed 'food' I know that what you get at Chaters is real ingredients elevated to another level. Amazing service and we were again made to feel so welcome and the atmosphere was friendly and chilled. We had a lovely evening and can't wait to visit again.

Disappointing - bland food dressed up as fancy small plates. Average at best. Pasta was particularly tasteless. Lots of great reviews but not worth the hype!

What a truly amazing experience...

Fantastic food, as ever. This time the experience was great in spite of the service, which wasn’t great. The staff were sweet but mostly ignored us. Food was forgotten, couldn’t get anyone’s eye for a second drink, and then (after late food, and waiting for empty plates to be collected for a good ten mins) the waiter said, “you’ve got fifteen minutes left on the table, would you like a quick pudding?”. Pudding would have been too rushed, so we didn’t bother. It was a shame, particularly given that you weren’t short staffed (lots of time to chat to customers and have a little boogie in the kitchen).

Fantastic restaurant with beautifully made food from beautiful produce. The staff are wonderful and we always have the best time. The pasta is the best I have eaten in the UK, it is such a treat.

Really lovely relaxed dinner. The service was warm and friendly, the atmosphere was informal, and the food was delicious. Some might find it a little casual and the decor a little stripped out, but we loved it. The small plate starters (especially the breads) were delicious, the pasta was really well cooked, and we shared a gorgeous silky boozy tiramisu. The wine choices were a bit unusual but no regrets there either! We'll definitely be back.

These guys have created something really special here. You can tell that they love what they do and understand what they are delivering as a proposition. This will become our go to place to meet on our bike rides.

This place is magical the atmosphere the food and the service. A simple menu of delicious locally sourced food cooked to perfection and presented beautifully. Totally recommend as a place to eat and drink

Restaurant is in a lovely old building in cente of Saffron Walden. The food was outstanding from our frittata/sprouting broccoli starters, to the beef shin ragu and sage/chestnut pasta dishes, and finished off with a superb tiramisu. Will definitely be going back here.

An absolutely fabulous establishment. The whole team were attentive, friendly and completely charming throughout. Will return as enthusiastically and often as the journey from London allows.

Met some friends for a meal in Saffron Walden, Chaters was recommended and as we all like Italian food we decided to book for lunch. I loved the quirky layout which meant you could see the chefs at work but the high ceilings meant it did get noisy and difficult for conversation at times. The waiters could explain the menu well and the food was delicious. Would recommend, and likely return when next in the town.

Second visit and high expectations realised.

Always great food and the best service from all of the team whether you pop in for a coffee, lunch or dinner. Whilst Chaters has a great wine offering and always has all those great Vault spirits I find plenty to enjoy as a mostly non-drinker.

Incredible food and service in a stunning space. We went for a quick lunch with our two small children and everything was delicious and the staff couldn’t have been more accommodating. The mushroom pasta was a highlight, we’ll definitely be back!

My first visit with a friend and I will be back. It was an evening and the atmosphere was lovely. It was busy but not crowded and loud so we could still have a good conversation. We had Negronis to settle in with followed by sparking wine, and the food was delicious. Diego was knowledgeable, charming and amusing.

Super relaxed and cosy despite the high ceilings and stylish yet pared back interiors. The small plates are delicious and surprising - a winning combination! This is a second visit and I will most definitely be back. It’s a must try for locals!

Superb food, well presented by excellent staff. The open kitchen and cafe-style setup makes for a fresh and airy environment, while letting the food speak for itself. Drink accompaniments were also excellent. The variation of flavours in the small plates, and the emphasis on sharing made for an enjoyably collaborative meal, which left us full, but not stuffed. Highly recommended.

Chater's never fails. The food is so good and the atmosphere is perfect. Took my parents for lunch and started with the Perello olives, broccoli, onion, coppa and ricotta small plates, followed by pasta and everything was delicious. Everything is always delicious!

The menu was innovative and thought-provoking. The food was tasty and well-presented. Service suffered from no sweeteners for coffee, and no effort until called to provide a spoon to stir the drink after my wife found a sweetener in her handbag. The same person needed another customer to point out to her that we were calling for water.

Excellent pasta, good pudding. 12.5% service charge should be discretionary.

Really nice small plates to pick from, but the star was the fresh made pasta, I really liked the basic recipes done at a high quality. The portion size was perfect and the pricing I thought was reasonable.

We popped in here to check the place out and boy we were so impressed. Wine was beautiful but the trio bread with burnt butter was just amazing. Will definitely return next time in Saffron Walden! Very nice and friendly staff and beautiful decor I must add!!

We enjoyed a lovely meal at Chaters, which was a birthday present. The food was exquisite, and the waiting staff were extremely knowledgeable about the food, very courteous and pleasantly attentive. The decor is attractively minimalist. But there is nothing of a view. And they allow dogs - half the tables had dogs with them, which I personally found detracted. Especially as we were there for dinner.

We’ve just moved to Saffron Walden and are so excited about this place. It’s such a cool vibe and the pasta is crazy. We will be regulars here…

I am not being biased because my daughter works here but had a meal last week with my family and have to say it was not just a night out to eat it was a unique experience tasting all of the wonderful starters that I would never have thought to even put together. We all left with our taste buds in overload. Highly recommend 👌 great service and great atmosphere gave it ful 5 stars !!

A real treat for a Saturday lunch. Loads of interesting fabulous dishes that were very affordable for the high standard and quality of everything. Very inspiring place if you love good food. Visiting for the first time on a Friday evening. Pre-booking was easy and the welcome was the best yet! As there was 3 of us and we all wanted specific items there was no sharing :( We all had a different Pasta dish, and mine was a simple dish with olive oil and garlic. It tasted great but I have to say it was so loaded with Garlic that I suffered during the night!! May be hold back on it by at least 50%... less is more! Everything else was great!

We (a family group of 4 all adults) went to Chater's for an early light supper on my wife's birthday after a day at the Henry Moore Sculpture Garden in Little Hadam. At 5-6pm Chater's do pasta and puddings. The pastas were all delicious. The tiramisu was amazing. The atmosphere is so relaxed. We sat outside for drinks first and then moved inside for food. I cannot recommend it too highly.

Personally I don't get the rave reviews. Foods ok but nothing more really.

Massively over priced. Tiny portions. Such slim cuts of the local bakers bread it was beyond ridiculous. My pasta dish was so plain and uninspiring I had to swap with my partner. No one wants to feel like they have been ripped off after a meal. It’s a shame because the space is lovely and Saffron Walden is crying out for a decent restaurant.

We had the most beautiful lunch! I dined here with two friends and it felt like we ordered everything on the menu, but not a single thing was less than perfect. Diego was helpful, charming and knowledgable. Service all round was relaxed but attentive, and the martini is banging.

Very good Wood Street Coffee and cakes. The vibe is super relaxing with friendly staff. We didn’t stay for lunch but the menu and quality of food looks great, with affordable prices - £5 negroni! We will be back to eat. Not many places you can buy Estate Dairy butter either so we left very happy. Update - we’ve been back to Chater’s many times now for coffee, lunch and dinner. Service is so lovely, food really good quality. I just wish you did brunch!! :)

The staff was very kind to reserve a table for us within the day, we have 4 adults, 1-year old kid and a dog; the service was perfect; great ambience; every dish was decent and delicious! Recommend to make a reservation in advance!
