Charlie's Cafe Bar in South Lakeland

This was my 1st visit to Charlie’s ... for a mid-day coffee. There was plenty of room in the beautiful spacious building- but this was just after Lockdown#2 - so lots of solo folk. There was no table service - had to take a tray cafeteria style. Menus were boards on the wall. Most of the food heavily wheat based - gluten-free options not obvious ( baked potatoes were available). I chose a lemon tart - a delicious lemon filling (but I left the pastry base). Coffee Americano style was very good.

Recientemente visité Charlie's con mi esposa y mis dos hijos para desayunar, un ambiente muy relajado, un hermoso interior, fue muy reconfortante ver a todo el personal usando PPE y que la cantidad de mesas se redujo por el distanciamiento social, el desayuno frito tuvo una excelente relación calidad-precio, al igual que las comidas de los niños definitivamente vale la pena una visita! !

A menudo visitamos Charlie's cuando estamos en la ciudad, sin embargo, este fue nuestro primer viaje desde el cierre, nos sorprendió gratamente ver que Charlie's recientemente ha tenido un cambio de imagen de buen gusto en el interior y se ve genial, el ambiente era encantador y nos sentimos realmente seguros comiendo allí como las mesas están bien distanciadas, la comida era tan buena como siempre, al igual que el servicio.

Porciones muy generosas y deliciosas.

Outstanding food, great coffee, reasonably priced. You couldn't ask for more! Chef Aldo Zilli would be proud.

Fantastic meal tonight. Food was great value for money. Good quality. Beautiful presentation and to top it off, lovely welcoming staff. Felt very at home and enjoyed every minute. A must visit in Kendal!

Two adults and a picky eater child enjoyed colourful salads and traditional baked beans on crusty, farmhouse toast respectively. Decent tea from a pot that pours properly!

El carpaccio de ternera se derritió en la boca, el eglefino con corteza de hierba fue uno de los mejores platos de pescado que puedo recordar. En general, una de las mejores cenas que he comido en mucho tiempo. El vino se sirve bien frío y tenía un precio muy razonable. Buscaremos definitivamente la próxima vez que hagan las cenas. 5 estrellas

Brilliant friendly service and the best salmon and prawn jacket ever! The puds are amazing too. This is our'go to' place to eat in Kendal and it's always fabulous value.

Visited here yesterday would highly recommend food was lovely as are the puddings I had the fish finger butty and custard slice big portions and good prices

We are a group of ladies who meet 3-4 times a year. One of our frineds was celebrating a signifcant birthday and we wanted to treat her to afternoon tea. To add to the "mix" another of our group is dairy intolerant so we wanted to go somewhere that could accommodate her allergy. Having visited Charlies many times we knew the staff at Charlies would be understanding of her needs. It appears that this was the first time Charles had catered for an afternoon tea - I dont think it will be the last. The staff coudn't do enough for us. The food was delicious, 4 different sandwich fillings, sausage rolls and scones, plus cakes. Well done Charlies!

Just came across the lovely cafe when visting kendal, staff very friendly, food was very tasty, great menu choice, excellant specials! And as im a vegitarian lots for me as well!

He estado aquí muchas veces para el almuerzo y siempre ha sido genial. Sin embargo, no ha sido por algún tiempo y probablemente no volverá. Ha cambiado, hacía frío allí para empezar. La comida que tengo que decir no era buena. El pollo estaba apenas caliente. Pensé que el pollo a la parrilla si recién hecho debería estar caliente, ya sea que se haya calentado o haya estado sentado por algún tiempo, no es bueno y no tiene sabor. Mi esposo y mi padre no calificaron la comida. Para ser justos, el personal era encantador al respecto. Devolví mi dinero a la comida y me trajeron un pastel de GF. Es una pena que los lugares cambien, podría ser que elegí el plato equivocado.

Came here with my two young girls, one who is 6 months. The staff were very helpful with carrying things and were very pleasant. Me and my older daughter both had prawn and salmon sandwiches which were delicious. Will definitely return 👍

We decided to continue our tour of the North Of England and go to places we had never been before and we decided to go to Kendal. We hadn't had breakfast before we left and opted for it in Charlies Cafe Bar.

Visited this week with husband and baby. Enjoyed lunch and had a good selection. Staff were helpful but could do with some more kitchen vents to stop the fat smell as it was off-putting.

We have had lunch at Charlie's on several occasions. Good quality grub. Highly recommended if you are a bit peckish after strolling around Kendal.

Por primera vez aquí, mi hija ha estado antes y lo ha recomendado y puedo ver por qué. Estaba muy ocupado pero encontré una mesa con la ayuda de un miembro del personal. Tenía el huevo revuelto y salmón ahumado y mi hija tenía el BLT ambos eran muy buenos y abundantes. Los pasteles se veían increíbles. El personal era muy bueno. Sin duda volveremos.

Desayunamos aquí en el día a Kendal. Había una buena selección para elegir y estaba muy bien presentada y agradable. El personal era extremadamente agradable y amable y el edificio muy interesante. De hecho, nos gustó tanto que volvimos antes de irnos a casa a comprar chocolate caliente y un pastel, ambos deliciosos. Sin duda volvería de nuevo cuando esté en la zona. Muy recomendable

£5 for fish and chips on a Friday... Can't go wrong! It's not chippy fish and chips but it was very tasty nonetheless. And the fish finger butty was very good. All washed down with a cuppa. Would highly recommend 👍

Had a lovely lunch here with friends on a day trip to Kendal . Club sandwich was very good a huge amount on the plate for a reasonable price, service was fast and staff friendly.

Popped in for a late lunch with my mum and auntie. Nice choice of light meals. The food was lovely and freshly cooked. And very reasonably priced

Went into Charlie's for a spot of lunch as we had a long drive back from the Lake District. The outside of the cafe doesn't do the inside justice! It's light and airy and the outdoor seating area is fab!

We were very pleased to see the produce came from local farm and suppliers . I had the house burger , it was fantastic . The coffee was great

My colleagues and I are frequent lunchtime visitors to rhis charming cafe. The food is always lovely and the staff are very welcoming.

Met up with family and wanted a quick bite to eat so thought we would try here. The service was good and plenty of places to sit. I opted for a dessert which looked great but the top was a little stale,it was a generous portion and I couldn't eat it all.

This place was recommended to us by a local. There is a good selection of salads, sandwiches, omelettes etc. We had good fish and chips, and the cheese tart was particularly good. There is a delicious selection of cakes too. Very friendly staff.

The breakfast offered at our hotel looked disgusting so we wandered out to find a cafe before heading home.Really glad we found this place before leaving Kendal. The English breakfast was great with lots to choose from and came out steaming hot. The best bit for me though was the hot chocolate, most definitely a great hangover cure. If I lived local I'd be visiting here a lot.

Ate “brunch” here today to escape the Premier Inn! All day breakfasts cooked to order. Food top notch. Coffee, hot choc and milkshakes excellent. Really lovely friendly ladies serving. Wish this was around the corner from me!

My husband and I have been frequenting Charlies for many years and it only just occurred to me that I have never left a review, so let me remedy that right now. I have to say we are creatures of habit and practically have the same to eat every time we come here (the rarebits, with combinations of sausage, bacon & poached eggs... the BEST I have ever had, ANYWHERE!) We often arrive with the idea of trying something different - and occasionally we have - but we are also of the notion that if it ain't broke, don't fix it!

What a great little find this was. Very unassuming from the outside but certainly makes up for it in quality & value.

Even though we live in Kendal we have not been to Charlie's for a long time, but we will be going again soon. My wife had a smoked salmon and cream cheese sandwich with a side of skinny fries and I had a Cheeseburger and skinny fries and our 5 year old son had his favourite, beans on toast! the food was well presented and very tasty, the burger was the best I have had for a long time, jury but not greasy and was homemade. a welcome change was skinny fries, loads of places serve chunky chips so it was nice for a change. they made an excellent chocolate floorboard too.

Podemos ver por qué su popular precioso patio tranquilo corte en la parte trasera para sentarse y descansar. Buena variedad en el menú con precios que eran razonables, optamos por una hamburguesa, que llegó rápidamente y bien preparado. Probé el queso ahumado hamburguesa, que era muy buena. Came here for breakfast on our holiday to Kendal. We enjoyed it so much we came back later in the day (after our boat trip on Lake Windermere) as I knew they made Welsh rarebit and it is very RARE to get good Welsh rarebit in British cafes. The staff were very accommodating as it was getting a little late in the day, and the rarebit (with bacon) was absolutely delicious! I hope we get the opportunity to return in the future.

Staff were lovely with the children good food and good portions. Relaxing atmosphere, long walk to the toilets though

I came here today with my mum friends for lunch. I ordered a blt on brown. When I took a bite of the sandwich I also had a mouthful of mud! It wasn't just a little bit a lot. I opened up the sandwich and there was more mud in it! There is no way whomever made this sandwich couldn't see it! I took it back in and the woman didn't apologise and just said did I want another one! However the lady who bought out the new one was very apologetic and gave me a full refund which was appreciated but I just couldn't bring myself to eat the new one!Please check that you wash your produce properly before serving it to customers as we could not believe our eyes!

Came across this cafe/restaurant visiting Kendal. Interesting old building with a maze of rooms and corridors. Nice atmosphere friendly staff and good service. Full fresh sandwiches a meal in themselves. Well worth a visit, good value.

Popped in for a spot of early lunch today after a long walk. Myself and husband both had a Welsh rarebit with added toppings and they were really enjoyable. Quick and friendly service. Slightly pricey though.

I have been visiting Charlie's for years and it will always be my favourite cafe In kendal. Food is always yummy, really varied menu with something for everyone on. My favourites are the overstuffed jacket potatoes. Do not agree with the comment about it being expensive, the food is good value as it is always very hugh quality. The ladies that work here are lovely. I have always felt very welcome, from bringing my elderly Nana, to feeding my little boy in here when he was a baby, to bringing my toddler little girl in here recently. There's a reason why this place has lasted all these years - it's fantastic.

Same old menu since forever, £3.05 for a portion of fries!! A bit pricey. No tomatoes on salad just a pile of leaves. Nice cakes but time to change a few things.

Great homemade foods and sweets! Truly delicious! Recommend to all! Very child friendly! You must try the Welsh Rarebit!

By sheer coincidence it started to rain as we walked past while on a day visit from the North Lakes, so what were we to do other than pop inside? So glad we did too. Looked at menu on blackboard which looked 'right up our street'. Selected from the Specials board and what a treat. It was delicious. Staff were courteous and friendly too. We also noted that locals while on their lunch break chose to eat there which is always a good sign. Quirky building also made a good impression, especially a trip upstairs to the loo! We will definitely return.

On the last day of our short break in the area we decide to Brunch at Charlie. We sat in the garden and enjoyed the sunshine. The staff did not rush us, we were able to sit as long as we wanted to. The facilities for disability were excellent. The toilet at the end of the garden was big enough to turn the wheelchair, inside, and was clean!The Brunch itself was lovely. Well cooked and presented. We all had different menu items. The mushrooms were fresh not tinned! In fact you could see and taste how fresh the food was. The staff were all pleasant and had time to spend a few minutes in chat. I could see the other tables were busy. A variety of different food was being eaten or just a coffee and chat. All the food items looked lovely and the plates were clean. As they were on our table too. We all decided it was a shame we had only found this place on the last day. If we travel in the area again we will seek out this very lovely place.

The family and I come here on a regular basis when shopping in Kendal.You will always get welcoming staff and good food, which is evident by the fact that is often busy any time of the day.Definitely worth a visit to rest those weary feet.

three of us had a lovely lunch sat out side in the very pretty garden area. We had chip butty, cheese burger and scrambled egg with smoked salmon and all was excellent. unfortunately no room left to try one of their delicious looking cakes so we will return another day to sample these.

This cafe bar was a first for us, and then only because the one we were looking to lunch at had closed down! We wandered further along Stricklandgate and discovered Charlie's. Like winning the lottery!It's a rambling sort of place, with lots of small rooms available for eating plus an attractive outdoor area for the al fresco among us. It hasn't happened too often this summer, but a few of those outside beat a hasty retreat inside, as the sun beamed down and temperatures soared. Summer at last!The service was swift, efficient and welcoming - this is clearly an establishment that can handle large numbers of people with ease.Two of us had the haddock and chips (first class) while I went for an omelette, with mushrooms and onions as added ingredients. I have to say it was outstanding - John Torode and Gregg Wallace would have raved about this!An extremely pleasant and satisfying experience. Well done to all concerned.

We would certainly recommend Charlie's as a great place to eat in Kendal. On a day visit yesterday we were looking for somewhere for lunch when we came across Charlie's. How lucky were we?!I had chicken breast in leek sauce and I can still taste it ! It was scrumptious! With wonderful fresh vegetables. Hubby had an omelette and ordered a side of fries. It was delicious, he said, but couldn't finish the fries, it was such a generous portion. What a shame we live 300 miles away! This would be a favourite place to eat.

Went here with my Mum on a day which was rainy and cold for July.Was so pleased we got in at 12 as got very busy. The menu is superb with so many choices and we went for a egg and salmon with salad dish ( Big enough for 2 people) and the smoked mackerel pate. Both were served fresh and we loved every mouthful. Really a little gem in Kendal. The cakes are also amazing.Kendal is lucky to have such a great place to eat at.

The inside is functional and comfortable, the outside space is lovely on a sunny day. The menu has everything from light snacks, to salads and burgers, you really can have a lite bite or a full meal and everything we tried was excellent. We regularly visit Charlie's for breakfast or for lunch when in Kendal. There is a good selection to choose from and the cakes and tray bakes are delicious. The staff are very, very friendly and always happy to accommodate your dietary requirements.Nice area for sitting outside in the summer and great for children.

We both felt peckish and called in here for a drink and bacon sarnie ,which hit the spot.Staff always pleasant and it's always busy in here,which is a good sign.Like it as the food is freshly made up,not like some places with pre-packed stuff.Really good choice of menu to suit all tastes.

Met a friend for lunch, suggested we went here as I had been and thought it pretty decent.We had absolutely delicious sandwiches my friend had some vegetarian concoction and loved it. I went for sausage and poached egg on granary. It was excellent and the baked egg custard to die for. The coffees were good so we ordered seconds. Can't wait to eat lunch there again.

If you are in Kendal and looking for anything from a light snack to a main meal, then look no further than Charlie's, brilliant food and their blue cheese burger is to die for served with mushrooms as well, but even if you only want a snack the choice is numerous and you can have brown or white toast with beans, eggs or cheese. If you just want a coffee then again you have an excellent choice, but watch out for their delicious cakes and biscuits. All in all a great place with very friendly staff

I have visited this little cafe 3 times over the last month now. The cakes are excellent - this is the reason I go. Coffee and burgers are good to very good. My neighbours kids loved the hot chocolate too and can't wait to return.

This place is great, the food is brilliantly priced for the quality, it was cooked perfectly and the staff are lovely. You can tell they have thought about the quality of the ingredients. The menu is extensive but not overwhelming. The service was fast but the food was perfectly cooked and presented, genuinely a fab visit. Definetely worth a stop her for any visit, from brunch and lite bites to full on meals with desserts. We will be visiting again very soon

Met up with my daughter and her children for a quick shop, and suggested a bite to eat. We were amazed at the wide selection of lunchtime menu and drinks. Plenty of space to sit, we were indoors as it was raining but lovely patio area at rear. Food was lovely, good portions, hot and enjoyable, and waiting time not long and food was freshly prepared. Childs' meals good as well. Some very tempting cakes and desserts, and definitely a place to return to.

I ate breakfast here recently during the film festival and it was delicious! Good and honest food at a very reasonable price. It's a warm and friendly place and it is now defiantly my favourite "go to" place to have breakfast when I'm next in town.

Living locally this is one of my fave places to go for breaky or lunch when in town! Food never disappoints! The breakfasts are the best around and the soup is always strangely good!

Decor a touch dated and toilets were like an old folks home. However service was good, tables clean but the food was fantastic! Veg soup was lovely and my wife had the club sandwich.

We stayed in the Premier Inn Kendal Central recently and Charlie's is just a few minutes walk around the corner. You can't really tell from the outside what it is going to be like but we were more than happy when we walked in. The tables and chairs aren't much to look at but the food on offer is fantastic! Just before you get to the counter there are fridges stocking a wide range of quality cold drinks (we had fresh pear juice, which was lovely) and amazing looking cakes and treats. Opposite are wall mounted chalkboards displaying the menus. I ordered a cooked breakfast with toast (5 item breakfast was around £8 I think, toast was £1.50 for 2 slices of bloomer style bread). My partner ordered salmon with scrambled eggs (this usually comes with brioche but they were more than happy to change this for regular toast), which again was around £8. My breakfast was fantastic. Everything was nicely cooked, very tasty and not greasy - bacon, sausage, fried egg, hash browns and beans. My partner said the salmon and scrambled egg was absolutely amazing and the eggs were perfectly cooked. The toast is gorgeous....big thick slices of buttery bloomer :)We were all gutted that this place wasn't open on the Sunday as we definitely would've returned the next day!If you are staying at the Premier Inn don't bother with the breakfast on offer at the attached pub - pay around the same price at Charlie's and get a far superior meal!

A regular stop for breakfast and I've never been let down. The staff are lovely, the building attractive and the food good. No nicer place in Kendal to sit with a paper and enjoy a coffee.

Went with a friend for some lunch. It was a nice day so we sat outside. I had a classic burger with my friend having sausage and hash brown sandwich. Food was delicious with a great setting. Only reason I didn't give five stars is because I personally am not a huge fan of the order-at-the-till style of service. Disregard this point and Charlie's is hard to fault.

Love charlies! I've been going for years and never had a bad meal, staff are always friendly, my nan loves it which says a lot as she is extremely fussy, I could take my kids, have been there with my partner too.. It's a great all rounder. Menu is really large, something for everyone with daily specials too. The jacket potatoes and salads are a personal favourite of mine, they are so filling x

I was recently introducedcto Charlie's by some friends who suggested lunch there. The comprehensive menu made it difficult to choose, but I finally settled on the goats' cheese salad, which was beautifully presented and absolutely delicious. My daughter had the grilled chicken children's meal and thoroughly enjoyed it. We ate in the pretty, outside courtyard. It was a great choice of eatery and I'll definitely be visiting again for lunch.

Great menu, delicious food, friendly staff, you leave feeling full. I love sitting out in the garden area when it's a nice day. The food always delivers! This place is great for foodies, nans, blokes, kids.... You won't be disappointed!

I often go here and I can honestly say I have never been disappointed. The service is good and the food is great. The cafe is family friendly and even has outdoor seating for those rare sunny days. If I can offer any tips it would be to be seated in the front rooms rather than at the back, the room nearest the kitchen lacks the comfort and atmosphere of the other dining areas. I

We had a very present breakfast at Charlies. The food was good and the staff were lovey. The building has an interesting history too.

Popped in for a late lunch, excellent food and service, interesting items on the menu, Welsh rarebit, sandwiches, baked potatoes etc. along with some "specials" we got 2 kids lunch boxes, complete with masks which the boys loved, 3 cheese quiche with a huge salad and Leek Mac and cheese with a lovely salad. 1 soft drink and a Prosecco came to less than £30, would recommend to anyone, especially if you aren't the designated driver!!

My wife and I go most Saturdays and find that the food is always hot and well presented by friendly staff who treat you as a friend.There is seating out the back when it is not raining and a lot of wildlife to look at.The food is fresh and hot good sized portions.

The criteria for finding somewhere for lunch was that it had to be handy for Kendal Record Office as it was raining and I hadn't a brolly and I've walking difficulties. What a wonderfully spontaneous find. The old building has such charm; there's outside dining when the weather's suitable, and there's an imaginative range of tempting food. It is a long times since I had such excellent home-made soup in a café, and of equal importance it wasn't overloaded with pepper and spices. Nutritious, filling and good value. I shall make an excuse to visit Kendal again before long, if only to have lunch at Charlie's.

I've been eating here since 2006 and it NEVER fails to deliver. I love the Welsh Rarebit, I love the salad mix and garnishes that you get and the selection of cakes is awesome. It is the only place in Kendal that I have ever eaten in that has not either messed up my order or given me poor service. I mean, how amazing is that. 8 years of flawless service - I wish the place I worked could say the same.

As regulars to Charlie's, it seems about right I write a review.Have been visiting here most weekends for several years and I've never had a bad experience. The food is always fresh, the staff are always wonderfully smiley and accommodating and the atmosphere is buzzing, regardless of the time of day.If you're in Kendal, go and have lunch at Charlie's!
