Charlie's Cafe in North Devon

First visit today and really good. Ideally placed by carpark and high street. Nice little menu and great coffee. Proper cooked poached eggs too and their homemade cakes looked lovely. Everything is GF, we aren't celiac just like a good cafe!

Absolute heaven for a coeliac. Everything is utterly amazing. And the staff are friendly, and reserved some donuts for us.

Amazing!!!! Sums it up really! My wife is gluten free. So much variety as everything is GF. She has freshly baked scones with jam and cream. They were massive and very tasty! I had nachos with chilli beef and I can say ‘best chilli beef nachos I have ever had’. Friendly environment. Accessibility easy for everyone. 100% recommend.

First time I’ve visited here in a while and was disappointed to see they’ve really reduced their menu. To be honest, it was hard finding something I fancied eating. I ended up going for a small breakfast and it was pleasant enough, good sausages. However I left feeling very underwhelmed. I think in future I will visit for cakes and coffee as it’s lovely to see GF donuts (although over £3 for one donut!) but avoid eating from the main menu.

I arrived here with my grandmother who is new to the area and the staff were so lovely. The whole place was warm and welcoming! With her age she’s noticing some issues with dairy, and I’m gluten free so it was great to be able to go out and just eat, hassle free, and also enjoy a sweet treat! We will absolutely be making a trip here a regular thing!!

I had friends down to visit, one who is gluten free who regularly struggles to find menus with much choice on. It was SO refreshing to take her to Charlie's, where she could choose anything off the menu and have so many options! The service was also excellent. To add to the menu, the donut and cake selection was awesome, most of us bought 2 because we couldn't decide! Fully recommend!

This place is incredible. The food tastes SOOO good. I'm not a coeliac so I know that gluten free often equals a bit rubbish. Not at Charlie's. At Charlie's the food and especially the cakes taste far better than the vast majority of 'normal' bakeries and cake shops. Just to put the cherry on the cake, the service is amazing too. If you're not visiting, you're missing out?

I go to Charlie's fairly often to see what new flavour cakes they have on offer because there are always new additions. The cakes are always amazing and I love being able to choose from a completely gluten free menu. I love the cannoli most of all and I'm not unknown to order a box of cakes and eat the lot. I like the breakfast as the portions are big enough for me, although I would like to be able to order just a bacon sandwich as I can't always manage a full breakfast. The service is always friendly and upbeat and its well worth a visit.

Amazingly good food and friendly staff. We will definitely be coming back when we are next in town. It was so lovely to have a full menu to choose from.

What a find! Everything gluten-free including their amazing focaccia bread which you would never guess was GF. All cakes vegan and gluten-free and can recommend their chocolate and orange muffin as well as their ‘Jaffa’ style cake. Cafe was clean, fresh and light so could see what you’re eating. Staff very friendly and prompt service. Would have liked to try other things on their menu and if ever in the area again would definitely go back.

Excellent lunch 10/10. Coffee as good as it gets. 100% recommendation. Clean and comfortable surroundings. Treat yourself to the steak sandwich, you deserve it.

The food is great - and I don’t have to be careful what I eat. (My two gf grandsons love it here.). Service always with a smile. A regular haunt of mine when I come into Barnstaple.

We love this cafe, it serves the best flat white in town, the two lovely young ladies Taylor & Kia are just the best, nothing is too much trouble. All their baked products and delicious looking cakes are gluten free and vey popular. Their menu is not huge, but what they do, they do really well, especially the breakfast (served all day) with locally sourced products. There are two guys in there Mike (not sure if he is the owner or manager) and a chef, they too are really helpful & friendly. Its just an all round lovely place to go. Its certainly become a regular haunt for us.

The coffee was nice - but that’s about it. The vegan breakfast came with a tofu scramble that leaked a layer of oil. The scramble just tasted of the flavoured oil and not much else. The mushrooms in the mushroom and hummus breakfast looked well seasoned, but lacked any flavour. Perhaps it was just paprika? Calling the focaccia focaccia was a bit of a stretch. Was closer to muffin dough but I understand it’s harder with GF flours. The shortbread that came with the coffee was vegan, which is great. However it tasted almost only of oil and wasn’t sweet enough. There are plenty of biscuits and cookies that are vegan by design, perhaps those would be better accompaniments. There are a lot of positive reviews, so perhaps today was an off day. Nonetheless, vegan and gluten free food can be great, but this wasn’t. Felt like a waste of calories.

Having a son who is coeliac, coming here was an absolute must whilst we were in North Devon. The menu was was vast, and it meant that even if you weren’t GF, it ticked all the boxes. We had a focaccia breakfast sandwich which was delicious, and took some cakes with us. They sugared ring doughnuts were just wonderful, and you wouldn’t know they were Gluten Free. The staff were friendly and helpful, and we will absolutely be back for another visit. The joy on my sons face when he realised he could have anything was just wonderful.

We had a very good coffee and were so tempted by the lovely choice of beautiful and interestingly flavoured cakes, but……..the photo shows the view from my seat. I realise the brick type of flooring is hard to clean, but it was filthy as were the skirting boards. Such a shame I was hoping to make this cafe a regular stop for coffee.

Absolutely tremendous. My daughter is recently diagnosed coeliac, she hasn’t had a cake counter where she can choose anything for months. The cakes/doughnuts were fantastic (we had a selection), the millionaire shortbread to die for! Happy kid!

This is a lovely independent cafe which boast lovely food, warm and welcoming staff and gorgeous cakes! We had some brunch here, food was cooked to a really high standard and came quickly. Its massive perk was that it has a completely gluten free menu, you really wouldn't have noticed any difference! The focaccia was brilliant was just like ordinary bread. My wife who's coeliac took home a box of treats from their counter to continue to enjoy. Hope to be back next time we're in the area!

Absolute gem of a place with everything gluten free. Friendly helpful staff. Delicious food which was accompanied by a fabulous hot chocolate, amazing smoothie & perfect tea. My husband was delighted at being advised EVERYTHING was gluten free. A bonus was that not all of it was smothered in chocolate as he’s allergic to that too. ( like many other places that do a token gf cake option). He had a fresh jam doughnut for the first time in years & bought a second to take away. We had a toasted chicken sandwich, toasted bacon & cheese sandwich & the maple bacon pancakes ( a generous pile of pancakes & bacon). We heartily recommend this lovely independent cafe & certainly wouldn’t bother with anywhere else. It’s so difficult to find anywhere that will offer gluten free food let alone a whole menu!

STAY AWAY! A very limited menu with RUDE & passive aggressive staff ( talking from experience). Don’t waist your money or time and go NEXT DOOR to BOSTON TEA PARTY - A FAB FAB place where food is JUST DIVINE and people are kind & friendly !

If you are near or passing through Barnstaple and need gluten free then this is definitely not to be missed. Whole menu is gluten free with wide range of dairy free, vegan and meat options. Strong breakfast menu, good lunch options and vast array of gf and vegan cakes that change daily. We chose a Chicken Sandwich with curry mayonnaise on Foccacia, bacon and pancakes with maple syrup and poached eggs on Foccacia. Too full to eat cakes but took them away in boxes provided. Glazed doughnut Bakewell tart flavour, coffee and walnut cake and raspberry and almond cake which were all excellent. If you are not passing through at meal time then get some GF DF cakes to go.
