Charlie Chan in Highland

Don't know what they do with the curry sauce in a typical curry as when I pour out the curry sauce onto my rice it's so thick it comes out of the container in one blob. The sauce is far too thick and doesn't mix very well into the rice, very unpleasant.

Really confused as to why one of the main pictures of this place has a picture of a piano and a setting that isn't at all what this place is? Seems to be photo advertisement for another resteraunt maybe? When selecting this place that was initially the whole reason we chose it for atmospheric purposes and we were pretty dissapoined when we arrived to see it wasnt the place displayed in the photo. We did end up leaving purely because it wasn't the atomphere we were after. I'm sure the food and service Is probably great. Just a suggestion that maybe this should be removed as it is misleading.

Had a meal from here last night & it was Very nice, plenty of food and excellent quality, staff member serving was very pleasant, will be back again soon.

Good food, plenty of it....quick service. Plenty of choice of food. Friendly and jovial staff. Highly recommended. It's a must for us when we visit Thurso

Been here several times for take aways. The food is incredible, and soo much of it. But just watch the prices - they never seem to be the same as in the menus (always costing more). Service is often slow and its a cash only payment system.

Booked here as a bit of a last minute option for a Saturday night meal, after booking somewhere else, arriving and not liking the look of it! We are so pleased that we did though as the food was delicious. The dim sum platter for starters was sensational as was the crispy wontons. We also really enjoyed our mains which was very flavoursome. A really lovely meal out, the only reason for not 4/5 was that the beef was ever so slightly tough on the sizzling beef and black bean and the egg fried rice was not what I was expecting. It’s also quite bright in there lighting wise! Other than that though (and I’m being picky) it was really great and so pleased we went.

Recently tried and very impressed. Quality of food is very very good and we will definitely be using this as our regular take out from now on!

Heard good reviews so decided to try it. The order when opened, one was incorrect suppose to be beef satay but turn out to be beef green peppers, there was no skewers so it was either misheard by the receptionist or misplaced /misread by the chef. The hot & sour soup was ok - add a dash of sesame oil will make it more enjoyable. The beef green peppers wasn’t what I was expected so didn’t enjoy nor did I finished it. The Singapore rice noodles, ingredient imbalance with too much salt rather than the satay spice powder. This made the meal too salty to enjoy eating and not healthy to finish it, so overall, below average. Perhaps next time the chef will pay bit more attention and get the order 100% correct next time.

Called in off spec. Didn't take long for our order to come thru. Wow what a feast. More than plenty to keep us going piping hot. Great takeaway

not even kidding honestly, usually picky about my takeaways and this was amazing, they even came to the campsite we were staying at (Windhaven)! My dad who says ehh to everything loved it and my sister who doesn’t even like Chinese loved it! Still reminiscing and wishing I didn’t live so far...

The food was sooo tasty. We were staying on the campsite (Thurso Bay) they delivered! Super quick and so easy to do. The portions are so generous. I would definitely recommend and order again! Just a note they only took cash when we ordered but cash points are really near by.

Don't bother. You will never get your food. I never got my food because they are inept and cannot make it when they say they will I called ahead and ordered. When I arrived 45 minutes later at my alloted time it was not ready. I asked about it after twenty minutes and they told me that they were just about to start cooking it. I left.

I am truly disgusted at the time it takes to serve a couple of ribs "ooh we are short staffed" nobody cares now give me my food I've been waiting for more than 30 minutes now, this is as tedious as having Ben Fogle describing what it is like eating sand. I'll leave another review in a year when I still have no food.

This used to be our takeaway of choice in Thurso - unfortunately not any more! The food is still more or less the same but it's how long you have to wait that has changed drastically - and not for the better. The restaurant used to be run by Ronald Chan and his extended family, but now a local family with no apparent experience in any retail sector, let alone the fast food industry, appear to have taken over and since then, waiting times have increased dramatically. Waiting times of one to two hours from when you order your meal seem to be the norm these days - well they promised an hour tonight but previous recent experience tells me that when they say that, you know it's going to be much longer! For the first time we went to a nearby competitor who promised a ten minute wait. Guess what? The food was ready in ten minutes! So long Charlie Chan - it was nice knowing you...

Phoned a delivery when on holiday. Told it would be 30 mins for delivery. After 1 hour i called to see where the food was. I was told they werent sure where the delivery driver was and were unsure even it would be delivered. Collected the order myself. By the time the food was back home it wass so late the kids wouldnt eat it so 2 meals wasted. If i had been informed on the phone that the delivery would be so late i wouldve just collected it in the first place. Bad customer service. Girl on the phone was very apologetic. Food was tasty.

Lost our take away order unfortunately, after we pre ordered an hour before. Arrived to collect and they told us to wait, after 20 minutes waiting they said they had lost the order and we would have to wait another 20 minutes. Did not believe that it would only be another 20 minutes so told them to forget it.

Ordered at 1700 for 1830. Travelled 20 min to get there. Arrived "sorry will be 20 min" waited 20 min. Sorry will be at least another 20. No organisation, no call nothing. Terrible terrible service. Shouldnt accept more orders than they can cope with and if they run behind contact the customer.

Phoned in a take away order...said it would be an hour. After an hour, said it would be 20 mins. After 20 mins said they lost the order and found it...and would be another 20 mins, told them to forget it, wasted time, wasted journey. Very poor.Never again.

Collected a takeaway tonight - food was good although a bit bland.However the takeaway Service was terrible - advised 20 mins and actually got food 50 mins after arriving to collect it!. Reception girl was polite but unable to help. Everyone waiting was frustrated at having to wait twice as long as being advised.

I love going to Charlie Chans for a meal. The girls that work there are great. Friendly and polite. The food is great and nothing is ever to difficult for Callum. I would recommend to friends to eat there. I miss the restaurant but the quality of the takeaway food is still great.

Food was very basic nothing special. Guy taking the food order was very friendly and helpful but the people in the shop part of the place were very rude and made you feel under pressure to buy something quick or leave not a good thing!! doubt i would come here again.

I had the new munchie box which was okay but nothing special. The guy behind the counter was soo rude and after waiting for 35 minutes after being told 20 I asked how long it would be he replied ‘if your not happy I’ll give you your money back and you can just go’ I replied that I was merely asking how long it would be he said ‘I dunno does it look like I’m cooking it’ I gave it another 10 minutes and asked again to which he said Iv already told you I don’t know I asked to speak to a manager and was told there wasn’t one there finally after waiting 1 hour for something I was told would be 20 minutes I got my food which was as I say okay but nothing special. I normally use a different Chinese in town but wanted to try the munchie box. I will not be back and I have never been spoken to so rudely by a member of staff somewhere. How he has a job I don’t know.

My wife and I have had take-away a number of times from here, as well as having eaten in several times before it became only take-away. At this point, we must say the food has become rather ordinary, if anything having gone downhill a bit from a year or so ago, Regarding our latest meal, the starters came with sauces that were quite gelatinous, while the mains (chicken satay, and duck with ginger and spring onions) had watery sauces and correspondingly weak flavor. On the other hand, the well-fed fellow who takes the orders and money is the epitome of friendliness and cheerfulness.

21st July 2018On this day i phone up for odder told me 20 mins so left nother 10 mins for save keeping make sure double ready on time as when asked for my odder said me out couple mins after 5 mins asked again man when thro back going be nother 10 mins top off that..i said man u said two mins buy this point be wighhting 40mins...still wasnt out after leting man no wasnt happy have no room on the inside for my son wheelchair come in had leve him out side with member family... when spoken to man was realy rude to me said if i didnt like it i could go some where eles hour later got it...and no am sorry for ur delay or knock bit off money off...i have been going there for years but very disappointed. This time around not sure if i will return back..not good for small town.

Staff in this Chinese are nothing but plain rude and unprofessional. Myself and a friend were looking through the shop whilst we waited for our takeaway and the male worker was extremely rude to another couple stating he couldn’t leave the shop whilst we were in it and made comments and sighs at us to try to make us get out. Extremely rude welcoming and throughout. Also don’t order from here if you are in a hurry because they will tell you it will be 20/30 minutes over the phone but your waiting at least another 30/40 when you get there. Very unpleasant and unprofessional staff in my opinion.

I've eaten from this restaurant on several occasions and have always enjoyed my meal. Pricing is reasonable and the adjoining Asian supermarket is great for ingredients.

This used to be a Chinese restaurant and Take away. Now its only a take away. Therefore there is no longer a Chinese restaurant in Thurso which is disappointing. They also no longer have a card machine - so you can only pay with cash. Its a shame because the food was good and used to do good portions.

I'm not a restaurant I'm a takeaway and a crappy shop! My owners forgot to mention this! Thurso is getting bad for meals after 6 pm you have to use a good hotel!..

I am always a little dubious of Chinese restaurants in small towns, but on entering I knew I was on to a good thing. The staff were very friendly and helpful. I had chicken satay starter followed by my current favourite of beef in black bean sauce. The satay was superb...a big portion too, with a generous helping of curry/satay sauce strewn with vegetables. The beef and boiled rice were excellent too...fresh and tasty. I couldn't finish it and took half away with me for my lunch the next day.

A restaurant with a lot of oriental food on the menu. The choices we made were ok. Nice food with good taste.

Came up on business food was ok good quality but nothing special was a very quiet night so not sure how busy that get but service was quick

Encontré este lugar cuando pasar unos días cerca de Thurso. Excelente servicio amable. Un menú enorme con un montón de opciones. Gratis pan de gambas, una ventaja. Las porciones son enormes, así que te sugiero pedir sólo 2 platos principales para un grupo de 3 que sería mucho. La calidad de la comida era excelente y muy sabroso. Una excelente comida a un precio razonable.

Entramos, izquierda independiente para 5 minutos a pesar de estar casi vacío el lugar. Pedimos una mesa para mí (bastante cortésmente amd en inglés) muy claro y era miraban por la chica que trabaja allí. . . Ella no se molestó en contestar y entramos. Muy embarazoso. No se aceptan tarjetas, no hay música y sin ambiente. Con un pequeño lugar horrible horrible poco miembro del personal que debería estar en la escuela para aprender algunos modales!

Hotel didn't serve food at 9 so walked to Charlie Chan. As mentioned previously it has a side room to take away. Manager fitted two of us in next to two large parties and it was great that he served us quite quickly to avoid the wait. Food was decent and no complaints. Portions good. They didn't take cards and was cash only. Would go back and service very helpful.

Went there twice during my visit. First night was excellent, tasty - second night - good job I was ravenous - not so good. The waiter is a delight and very helpful. Be wRned however, there were signs up saying credit card payments would no longer be allowed!! Not a good idea. Would I go back- YES- the service was excellent and maybe I choose poorly on might 2.

Ate here on a Tuesday night. The service was excellent. The food was average. The venue was clean but very basic, lacking atmosphere and in real need of a modernising. I have to say though that the Irish waiter (owner/manager?) was fantastic. The level of customer service he delivered was outstanding. He ought to be working in a Michelin Star restuarant not a Chinese in Thurso!

A rather unusual concept of dining in a side room of a takeaway, so you get the takeaway menus when you order. We got the special deal for two which was easilly big enough for four and well priced at £24.00. Food came piping hot and quickly. Service was excellent and special mention to the main man who was just a genuinely nice person! Would recommend.

A good Chinese restaurant where nothing is any trouble. We asked for extra spice and this was provided at no charge. Staff are attentive and friendly. The food was good, well presented and piping hot. Recommended.

More of a takeaway with tables but food was overall pretty good. It was strange that no Chinese people work there but the young staff that were on duty were very pleasant and helpful.

Went this evening for dinner. We chose the meal for two people at £24. Oh my goodness, the portion sizes were huge and could probably have fed 4 not 2. The food was also tasty so good value for money along with excellent service. Not the best Chinese we have had but overall a good positive vote.

Went here for an evening meal. The staff are very friendly and efficient. It's a sit in restaurant and takeaway. The menu is very extensive, we opted for a set meal for two, it's priced at £24 and comprises a mixed starter platter, huge portions and beautifully cooked, or any two soups. Any three main meals and two side dishes from rice, fried rice or chips. Prawn crackers were put on table while we were waiting for meal and refilled free of charge. The three main meals were very good and again portion sizes large.

Doing a whistle stop tour of the north...staying in Thurso and stumbled on Charlie Chans,,,,what a find...lovely friendly welcome...great food...nice chat about the area and a nice goodbye wishing us well...nothing wrong with this place...would recommend!

Had a take away last night and it was lovely, I had the japanese special udon satay noodles which had a slight kick to them leaving my lips with a slight burn. I've​ never had them before but I will definitely be having them again. Serves is rapid quick and its a rather large portion that I got too so I didn't manage it all for my dinner so the left overs made for a good lunch the next day.

We had a carry out thi week - it was inedible! Not worth the name food!Will never go there again, gave it all to the gulls, terrible, terrible, terrible!

It's an OK place to go for a reasonable Chinese. The starters were all quickly served and the waiting staff were very attentive. The sizzling dishes we all ordered were really good. Look forward to going again.

Arrived in Thurso to the Royal Hotel late at night - not many options for dinner, walked to this restaurant with a group and seated at 945pm.Waitress was very sweet and accommodating.Unfortunately the food was only mediocre. Hot and sour soup was too sweet.The Kung Pao chicken sauce was very sweet - more like a sweet and sour. Unusually, the dish had cashews instead of the usual peanuts. Serving sizes were good and prices reasonable. Best part is that the food is hot, and available until 1130pm.Comically the menu states the "northern most chinese restaurant in Scotland". When I asked what about the Orkney Islands, the waitress clarified "Mainland Scotland"

Visiting Thurso for one night we happened across Charlie Chan, and what a winner! The food was delicious, the best Chinese we've had in the Highlands, but the real star of the show was the service. We were blown away - the staff were so attentive and helpful, without being overbearing. The perfect balance. Our group of four all described the service as faultless. Combined with the very tasty food, it was the perfect night!

A very nice and Chinese meal, I can recommend honey crispy seaweed as well as lovely chicken in honey plum sauce, all of us enjoyed the meal . We have ordered take away and I can tell that the restaurant is really busy and a lot of local people pop in so its a good sign that the food is nice and its fresh as its quite busy !

Visited last night for my 30th birthday and was lovely. Cannot fault anything Alastair was our waiter and he was soo attentive. He is certainly thee best waiter in Thurso ( i can say that as ive lived here all my life). Another waitress called Kelly was very polite and also friendly. Their staff are a credit to the restaurant. Food was amazing and portions were huge. Great night had by all.

had fabulous meal, with waiter very knowledgeable regarding menu, best i have experienced in a long time. Really quick service food piping hot and delicious. The waiter was so helpful and friendly, a great example of the best customer service, did not get his name but I'm sure owner will know who i'm talking about if i just say 'he's going to Vegas ' on holiday. A wee holiday bonus would be nice as he certainly would make you want to revist.

I was travelling alone so to the waiter pit me out of the way of a big group and even popped the TV on for me! He was incredibly helpful but not in a pestering way. His knowledge of the menu and what some of the unknown to me dishes were was faultless.Complimentary prawn crackers was a lovely touch. The food: Mongolian beef starter was really tasty and the honey coated crispy chicken main with boiled rice was very enjoyable. Would definitely go again if I'm in Thurso.

Ate here during an overnight stay near Thurso. We were brought the menus with complimentary prawn crackers, but would have liked sweet chilli sauce too (what we usually get in our local chinese back home). Order was taken and food arrived piping hot. Portion sizes were good but flavour was just OK. I had the honey salt & chilli crispy chicken. The sauce was oversweet & more like watered down treacle sitting in the bottom of the dish. Just not to our taste.

Doesn't look much from the outside but don't be put off. Décor inside is a little 'worn' and could do with a refresh. As others have pointed out they do have a tv as well as a radio on so this isn't really a place for a romantic cosy meal. But the staff are very friendly and the menu must be one of the largest I have ever seen. Food comes in huge portions and was very tasty. No complaints at all so we will be back yet again I'm sure. And the Take Away side of things was also very busy also so if you prefer to take your food somewhere quieter then that's an option too.

We had two meals here while were in Thurso, one for 4 of us after the Halkirk Games, and one for all the family that was available on the night before we left. The menu is extensive and lots of variety, so we were able to try things that we had not had before. Both occasions were most enjoyable, good food, and very good service. Would definitely go back again on the next visit.

At first we thought we were in for a real treat. Menu was expensive, but sounded nice. However, although the place was practically empty we were forced to sit near the toilet door, despite requests to sit elsewhere. We really should have left at this point. Prawn crackers were brought and drinks orders taken. We were asked if we were comfortable with Chinese bowls and chopsticks, to which we all answered "yes" only for the same sever to bring European cutlery a few minutes later. We were all slightly confused! My jasmine tea was a sad little tea-bag. Not good.Food order was taken and food was brought very quickly. Two out of the three meals were great Singapore Chow Mein and Salt and Chilli Chicken both fresh and tasty. However, the Honey Coated Chicken was very obviously made with golden syrup and not honey, and was so sickly sweet it was inedible. Not at all like any honey chicken I've had else where. Just not my night, eh?We tried to get the attention of a server to point out the problem, but they suddenly all had far too much to do, even though the place was still almost empty. Add into the mix the huge TV showing tennis (with the sound on) and the Beatles playing loudly on loop in the background and the whole thing got a bit surreal.So hit and miss, and to be honest a bit over-priced - especially for poor quality tea-bag tea and very shoddy service.

Larger than life scotsman gave us great service. Food was tasty with large portions. Not cosy and there is a telly on the wall which had football on but still OK. Would go again.

Just passing through Thurso on holiday and took a chance on Charlie Chan restaurant and take away. Menu was very good and the portions were very big. The service was very good and attentive. Reasonably priced.

We arrived in the north coast of Scotland on a Sunday night and were looking for a takeaway. There wasn't very much open but we came across Charlie Chans. We decided to eat in and we had a very enjoyable evening. It's not a posh place, there's TV on the wall and wifi but after a long journey it was a great place to relax. The waiter was very very helpful and friendly. It's not a fancy place but the food was good, portions were generous (they offered to box up any leftovers but we managed to eat it all !) and prices were reasonable. I would go back.

First time in Thurso so didn't know where to eat on our first evening.We were bit put off by the outside of Charlie Chans on first glance, but decided to go in for sit down meal.We were very glad that we did because everything was great.Sorry we didn't ask for any of the staffs names, but all 3 that we met were very attentive and informative about our choice of food and drink.We enjoyed our Chinese/Malaysian meals very much.£37 for 2 chicken meals with rice and 3 beers.

...for years. It's better now than it's ever been. Huge selection of dishes, mainly Chinese but lots of other Asian choices too. Service is really attentive, and Alastair and the 2 girls looked after us well without being over the top. If it has 2 chillies against it, they mean it. Very generous helpings so order accordingl, though the helpful staff will advise you without you having to ask. Top marks to Thurso!

When in the area, we make a point of going to Charlie Chan, as it is one of the best Chinese Restaurant's we know. The food is always tasty, & cooked well, also the service is friendly & smart.

Localino tipicamente asiatico a Thurso. Molto gentili , le porzioni sono abbondanti anche se per i miei gusti alcune cose erano buone ma altre un pò meno. Come aspetto negativo, il freddo in sala, solo un piccolo radiatore elettrico che non scaldava neanche l'aria, meglio bere qualcosa di alcolico e forte.....Magari in estate è meglio..

First visit as just fancied a Chinese whilst staying overnight in Thurso and we weren't disappointed. Good friendly and attentive service was very evident as soon as we arrived. Happy to recommend.

We came off the boat at Gills Bay and were travelling South so decided to stop in Thurso for dinner.We had a 2 year old and a baby with us.Service was quick and efficient, the prawn crackers arriving shortly after we sat down.I had mixed salt and chilli seafood with vermicelli noodles whilst my wife had satay chicken with noodles. Both were excellent.The waitress was considerate enough to wait until the satay had stopped sizzling before putting the plate down anywhere near the children.Our girl enjoyed her chips!Overall a very good meal.

Had a lovely meal in Charlie Chan food was amazing as were the portions we could not finish it. Staff were lovely as well could not do enough for us would definetly recommend it only wish they had one in Kirkintilloch!!

Got a take-away of special fried rice. Asked for curry sauce on top, instead of BBQ sauce, which they were happy to do. Both the take-away and the restaurant side are on the flat, and wheelchair accessible.Tons of pork and beef on top, and in the rice too. However, the prawns were missing from it, and the ham bits were spongy processed stuff. The container was MASSIVE, and despite being hungry, only managed to eat just over half of it. At £6.50, it was good value, but just hated having to put half of it in the bin. Would suggest you get 2 dishes between 3-4 people.Staff are absolutely lovely, and I would definitely go there again.

Everything is absolutely delicious with not only Chinesse cuisine but they experiment and bring totally new combinations and not only is this a takeaway it has a amazing restraunt to! And all prices are fair

I been few times in this restaurant. Service and food its very good. Perfect choice for family and friends dinner

Having previously got a takeaway we decided to sit in for a meal during our trip to Thurso. The food was on the pricey side... but more than worth it considering the portions. They had a high chair available for our 11 month old son and took a real interest in him (which he loved). Really can't fault the food or the service one bit.

I visited in October 2015. The restaurant is centrally located and I found it easily via Google Mapping. The service I received from the waiting staff was exceptional and the food was delicious! What more can I say? Just beware that the portion sizes are large. I was warned but my eyes were bigger than my belly.

Dined here on Sunday after a long drive including a little 10k run, and was disappointed! We were very hungry so had a sharing starter very tasty spring rolls the best prawn toast I have ever had!I had the sizzling chicken stay and it did not disappoint amazing, my partner had the salt pepper chilli prawns and he was not disappointed even the egg fried rice was good!Very friendly staff and filled our very empty bellys greatly!

Didn't get as far as eating. . .I'm sure the food may well be delightful, but we were shown to a table. .. sat down,. .. place was freezing and the waiter put an electric heater on??!!. . .. maybe it was to try and stop the wallpaper falling further off the wall. .. .this didn't put me off that much until we looked at the menu. . .. no way was I paying their prices, in a venue with no heating, and wallpaper falling off the wall. . .. the takeaway menu was averagely priced for a Chinese takeaway, so I cannot fathom why the dining menu was so expensive. . . .we got a takeaway from their competitor!!

OMG !!! Just had this today normally it comes with BBC sauce and I wish I,'d had that instead as the dish was completely overpowered with chilli so hot my eyes were streaming after 2 mouthfuls. Place was really busy with a steady stream of folk coming in to order so food surely cannot be as bad as the dish I got. I have had this dish in numerous chinese takeaways and this was totally ruined by the chef.if I had been dining in it would have been returned

Our third visit to this restaurant on our way to the Orkneys. The food was very good and plentyful.Wse were most impressed with the staff,very helpful and attentive. Pricewise very reasonable. Impressive.
