Alex Chinese Takeaway in Highland

I believe this place is now called Dornoch Oriental although it has hard to determine this with the various name changes and information available. We weren't even sure it was open until we drove there...! Very basic frontage and interior but for a Chinese take away, this is quite usual. The only thing we were truly bothered with though was the service - which was lovely...! - and the food - which was excellent and plentiful. Very reasonable pricing too, especially with some of the main meals coming with rice included which was a pleasant surprise...! Overall, would definitely recommend.

My family ordered a selection of meals from here and all of them were delicious. everything was piping hot, we would definitely use this takeaway again.

Had chicken curry and it was awful, horrible chicken. So disappointed. Had chips too and they were burned dry and unedible.

After reading some reviews we were sceptical to go here. 7 of us got a takeaway from here while up on holiday and loved it. Not a bad meal was had. Especially the salt and chilli chips, they were a favourite! Quick and not to badly priced! Will be back!!

Takeaway has changed hands, but remains much the same. New menu, so don't order by number or you will get wrong thing. 3 of us had takeaway - 3 different meals and 2 sides. Nothing was good, the chop suey was awful, noodles poor, fried rice unexciting.

A last minute decision led us to opt for a Chinese carry out. We were a bit worried by some of the less than glowing reviews but the Chicken Curry and fried rice hit the spot on a drizzly evening.

Food was very good, would go back. The food was piping hot by the time I walked back to the campsite, just unfortunate they did not deliver.

We have been here before the food was good ! Hence we came back , this time not so good ! My husband ordered sweet and sour prawn balls , prawn balls good but the sauce it came with, looked like pink jelly and smelt and tasted of strawberry jelly with a hint something else ! Not on ! As a customer I feel insulted that they think they can get away with that ! This is not Chinese cuisine!

Food not bad but sweet and sour sauce had been made with what tasted like strawberry jelly . Most odd .

Spare Ribs: must have been a re-heat. Could barely chew a large portion of them. Special Curry: Gave me wrong order and blamed it on miss communication lol. What they did give me tasted horrible and was combined with the rice. There was that much sauce the rice was swimming in it. However I was refunded for main course when I took it back. The best bit about the experience was the 2 nice ladies serving having a good laugh with the customers. Its very hard to find a decent Chinese takeaway these days. This is definitely not one of them. Looks like a hit or miss. Hope you throw the dice well.

This meal was mostly rice, Small strips of fat & skin! not enough duck! Very disappointing looking forward to a nice meal, Best to say you have ran out of Duck rather than serving such a portion. Cheers Alex

Alex Chinese Takeaway has an extensive menu and the service was very speedy as we phoned in our order and collected the food as soon as we went in for it.The food was ok.

We have just had a brilliant takeaway meal. I am surprised at some of the bad reviews. We are staying at a caravan site down the road and decided to order a Chinese takeaway and eat it back at the caravan. I ordered beef chow mein and my bf ordered special house curry with boiled rice. It was delicious. Piping hot and HUGE portions. Loads of beef in mine and a mix of chicken, char Sui pork, beef, prawns in the curry. It is a bit more expensive than our usual takeaway at home but the portions are much bigger. The man that served us was friendly and I would definitely go back again. I have posted pictures of our meal.

The starter was burned and tasteless. The duck dish was chewy and fatty (the combination was unpalatable) and the chow mein was bland. We’d not eat from here again.

We had 3 different dishes, all good portions, very tasty and asked for no veg, will go again no problem

What a rude man! And the price for what was basically cheap oven chips with curry sauce was extortionate. Won’t be giving them my custom again.

Ordered a singapore fried rice and when collected it was Singapore noodles they gave him . There was two pieces of chicken , two prawns and literally no taste in this dish . Complete waste of £8.25 . When my partner called them the man was shouting down the phone “ no you ordered noodles and hung up “ so I called him back and said it was Singapore noodles he ordered it was “ I’m Busy “ and hung up the phone . Shocking behaviour toward anyone especially a local . Avoid at all costs !!!!!

We had s couple of dishes from here.Large portions wnd quite tasty They didn't have a couple of things we wanted so we changed it.

On my recent time spent near Dornoch, my family and I used Alex for our evening meals. Absolutely fabulous and consistent high quality food, great price and fast service. If I go back to the area I will be back for more.Thank you very much....

Am Chinese (but living in Scotland) and so I know what I am talking about - excellent Chinese takeaway! Ordered beef with green and red peppers, mapo tofu with prawn, and boiled rice. Delicious! Haven’t had such good Chinese in Scotland for awhile and this really made my day! Thank you to the kind people in the takeaway who made me feel so welcome.

We had an absolutely amazing takeaway from here. The food was so good and very reasonably priced. Certainly worth a visit.

the meal my daughter and l had was very tasty and stayed hot till we got back to the caravan. i will be up again next week and looking forward to having another take out with some of my family

We are staying at Grannies Helian Hame and visited here tonight 13.09.20.10 minutes to pick up and was ready when we arrived.I thoroughly enjoyed my meal - House Special Curry with salt and pepper chips. Lots of meat and at least three king prawns I counted.The wife had chicken with pineapple abd again, plenty of chicken and enjoyed her meal.I ordered Hot & Spicy Chicken wings and got 6 for £4.70. Very good on portion size and was not greasy at all..I'd definitely go back, we both had a lovely meal.

On holiday nearby and on our last night decided to have a takeaway. It was delicious, loads of chicken and very tasty, mini veg spring rolls even came with sweet chilli sauce. Will definitely be returning on our next trip in March but now I’ve got a menu I’ll be choosing before we get there. Would totally recommend

Staying in the area on holiday, so a one off visit to this takeaway. Really glad we happened upon this place as the meals we had tonight were top notch. Everyone usually has a favourite takeaway they're loyal to, so always a bit of a risk trying another unknown place. Risk paid off, happy bunnies here.Freshly cooked and tasty, nothing to criticise. We got BBQ spare ribs,a special satay, Szechuen chicken, 2 portions of rice and a portion of chips. Good prices considering they have a monopoly on the market there, just over £25 for everything. Big portions, so some leftovers for tomorrow.Winner winner, Chinese dinner!

After reading the reviews I was expecting a decent meal but I was wrong! Kung Po chicken - loads of veg, very little sauce and It was tasteless (it wasn’t KungPo). Thai chicken curry - No, it was the typical Chinese curry sauce with added chillis! Fried rice was tasteless also.The only part of the meal worth eating was the salt & chilli chips, luckily I like salt as they were a little heavy handed with that.The prices are reasonable but I won’t be returning on my next visit.

First time here on hols with family. Would normally eat out, but Dornoch severely lacking in places for family and dog. Still, random Chinese it was and really enjoyed it!

Don’t let the outside and inside impression put you off . The service was as you would expect from a take away and was very prompt.Food here is always fantastic ! We visited here three times while staying in Dornoch for a week. The salt and chilli ribs are exceptional and would highly recommend, best we’ve ever tasted ! Disagree with previous reviews regarding being expensive. The dish portion sizes are large and rice is included as standard and therefore great value for money. Very fresh and hot every time. They are also open 7 days a week !

My family and I ordered some food including PLAIN fried noodles. They came with Veg which I had to pick out and upon doing that, I found HAIR in my noodles!! Very disappointed and meant that I couldn’t eat the noodles! The chicken satay was nice - the chicken fried rice had a strange sweet sauce :/

Best prawn toast in the world but we’ve had about 10 carry ours from here and it’s brilliant. I can highly recommend the food and that’s from someone who live in Manchester where there were loads of great Chinese places. This is as good as any imho.

Always excently quality food. A 30 mile round trip but worth every mile. The staff are always very friendly.

We're regular customers since the change in ownership. Prices are pretty typical of other "local" chinese takeaways but we think the food is best from here, freshly cooked, hot and very generous portions. Don't recognise the comment about gloop or MSG.The owner is now front of house and is very friendly.

First impression,doesn't look like a Chinese takeaway,second impression - tad expensive,thirdly,it was bloomin' tasty! Called for a late tea after a full day out exploring(8ish),service seemed "couldn't care less",no chat or acknowledgement whilst waiting(no one else about),however,main thing,the food,it was hot fresh,tasty and plentiful,which,lets be honest,is what you set out for. So,social skills and prices minus's,food,a big plus!

Worst Chinese food I've ever had and I've been eating Chinese for 50 years! Food was a gloopy tasteless mess. They must get MSG delivered by the ton. Ribs overcooked and dry.

Lets start with some good news, this place is now under new management and not before time. We ordered Chicken breast curry, two fried rice, chicken balls (starter) chips & prawn crackers came to £21. VERY EXPENSIVE! This place can charge these prices simply because they are the only one around for miles! Now to the food. This time the food was tasty, in other words, my review from 2018 was very scathing of this place as the food was substandard by a country mile! The curry tasted like curry this time! Rice is not your standard rice, its much smaller grain however was still ok. The chicken balls were still a bit on the greasy side and possibly just a tat underdone but eatable, chips were ok, prawn crackers not the best I have tasted but done the job. The takeaway has had a fresh paint job so looks clean, looking through the hatch you can see the lady washing all the pots up. The guy on reception is Chinese and can mostly always say the word ‘yes’ but nothing else however, he seemed very interested in the program on TV at the time of visit called ‘the chase’ A little interaction with customers would have been nice as after all mostly are visitors to the town! If this place was cheaper to buy from Im sure they would be busier especially as there is a huge Parkdean holiday site near by! The prices put people off, once tried the price makes you think about going back a second time during your holiday. On average the cost of my takeaway from my hometown would have been around £12 - £15 so you can see how much more expensive this place is. Having new management I would have thought they would have changed the name too as the old owners food was revolting. Would I try again? Yes, but would try more often if they brought their prices into line with other Chinese takeaways. I visit this area two to three times a year but mostly buy our food from the local Asda or get it delivered. Having a Chinese from this place is a treat all be it an expensive treat! To summarise, food is now tasting better, place is cleaner, too expensive, little interaction between staff and customer would be nice, even if its just to ask the customer “are you on holiday” oh, and as the holiday season is now over this place closes at 9pm for the next few months.

After getting back into Dornoch a little too late for 2 of the local restaurants we had little option but to try out the local takeaway. TBF what we ordered was hot fresh and tasty. The price was a little on the expensive side but I guess in the middle of nowhere one has to expect this. Owner was very chatty whilst waiting for our order and it filled a gap after a busy day travelling. Back to our B&B to enjoy our food in bed. Overall not too bad at all.

My partner and myself got a takeaway whole staying at grannie's heilan hame and the food was very good. My partner got a chicken fried rice with sweet and sour sauce while I had salt and chilli chicken with curry sauce and chips. We both thourghly enjoyed or good and will definitely be back when we are in the area again

A wide ranging, reasonably priced menu. Service was quick and friendly and the portions were very generous. Most importantly our meals were very enjoyable. Recommended.

Been a few times and have no complaints of the meal. I had the chicken fried rice with a curry sauce and my husband had a chicken and mushroom curry. The staff are nice and friendly too.

Never been here before.. So wasn't sure what to expect... Food was lovely very tasty... Service was speedy and friendly.. Will grab food from here next time we are in Dornoch

Good menu to choose from and very quick service. We went for mushroom chow mein, chicken chow mein, bbq spare ribs in sauce and salt and pepper chips. All 3 of us, and the dog, enjoyed the food. We only use this take away when we're up in Embo on holiday but have never had a bad meal. If you are staying at Grannies Heiland Hame use Alex's as your main source of food when eating out.

The locals that I talked to said it was decent food so we tried it and it was - have had way worse. We wanted something easy and were tired of the pubs. The Singapore noodles were not like I expected but were at least tasty - the dry ribs appetizer portion were good as was the lemon chicken. The fried rice was pretty bland but it came free with the chicken. I reasonable change of pace.

Not what you would expect! Call themselves a Chinese Takeaway but the food is dreadfull, the chicken is slimey, not breast even when breast is requested, the curry sauce is from a packet as mine still had the remeninse of powder! Taste of the food is bland, this takeaway knows that it can get away with the substandard food as they are the only takeaway in the area! They really don’t care as they know the majority of their custom is holiday makers. Join a sicial media group from the area and Ask the locals what they think and you will soon find out they don’t buy from there! Sorry to be so blunt but this takeaway has been getting away with substandard food for years. Time to look further afield, I’m sure anywhere else would be better that this place called Alex Chinese Takeaway. Ps, whatever you do dont complain as they are not interested!

We bought a meal for the family evening meal whilst on holiday based on the reviews from other customers.

It was good and pretty darn fast, we walked down to pick it up and quality was good. Very surprised!

Stayed in dornoch for a couple of days and could really go a chinese , was told about alexs tak away . My wife and i had our usuall takeaway meals from our usuall takeaway restaurant , OMG what a difference in taste between our own takeaway and alexs if we lived in dornoch alexs would be our 1st choice meals were outstanding tastey and plentifull

While in Dornoch for 7 nights in June, we had Chinese Takeaway for dinner one night. The portions were plentiful and delicious. Service was prompt and pleasant.

Have used Alex Chinese a couple of times. It's ok, would visit again, but only once in a holiday week.

I would have given this 4 stars instead of three if it weren’t for the fact that the orange chicken was so full of pineapple flavor that you could not taste the orange - disappointing!

Our meal from here was the highlight of our trip to Grannies Heilan Hame. I’d come across it on trip advisor by chance when looking at things to do nearby but didn’t expect for a second for it to cater so well to coeliacs.

We had a take away whilst staying near by at Embo. Great menu choice and very tasty food. Will return next time in the area

For an authentic Chinese meal that’s good value you have to try Alex’s. The staff are always friendly and the waiting time is reasonable. Would definitely recommend.

Terrible! Probably the worst Chinese food I’ve ever had. I had a chicken dish with no chicken, amazing!

I can’t praise Alex’s Chinese takeaway enough. The menu is extensive and all of it full of flavour. I was served by Andrew a friendly and knowledgeable boy, he helped me with some recommendations and made sure my meals were ready quickly. Next time I visit Scotland I’m stopping by here again. Shame it’s not my local Chinese!

The food was nice me and my wife came in on a saturday night and was served by a smiling boy who took our orders well, and even managed to helped us decide what to eat. ending up getting our meals in good time even though it was busy, the meals where nice with good amounts of meat, and a decent size fried rice included.

This was our second visit to Chinese takeaway we had spare ribs then sweet n sour chicken fried rice and chips it was all well cooked and nice and hot even going back to grannies heilan hame we both enjoyed our meal with good portion sizes well worth a try.

Went here twice whilst staying at parkdean. Food was nice and portion sizes are good but having the chicken curry I have to say it tasted not a thing like chicken. The second time we had chow mein and that was really lovely. Portion sizes are great and they are fast and efficient

This take away was excellent. Cooked to order and very tasty. Average price for what we had which included the biggest bag of prawn crackers I have ever seen.

Family of five and not one of us enjoyed our meal..........very disappointing! we were delighted to have found a Chinese while staying at Embo, however once sitting down to eat it we found the food tasteless! One of the dishes was so over cooked it tasted of charcoal so I suppose there was some taste but hard to chew. Not one of us were able to finish our meal!

Always impressed with the quality of food and speedy service at Alex's chinese. Being part of a large family we often place quite a large order. The food is prepared fresh and in good time. The staff are always pleasent and happy to help. Alex's Chinese is by far the best takaway north of Inverness. Would highly reccomend.

We have been using this Takeaway for 5 years now and less and less over the last year as it's priced for same order has hiked up from low £20 to mid £35's. As well as this, I have to walk outside my house to get a mobile phone signal, as they no longer accept withheld numbers, although these days, over 50% of landlines are withheld. So as a treat for our anniversary I was getting a takeaway, same order as the last 5 years. We threw half of it away and have been left with a strong taste of salt from various items such as pancake rolls and prawn Crackers. My wife has just also been sick whilst writing this review, this place has REALLY gone downhill. After speaking to a few locals around my area, they have stopped using them also. Another customer lost, off to tain Chinese we will go from now on. They aren't great, but 10 times better then this place is now.

We were on a family trip with our 4 children to Grannies heilan hame. Alex's Chinese takeaway is a five minute drive away. The food was fresh, tasty and well cooked. Each main meal comes with a side order and the portions are plentiful making it excellent value for money. The prawn crackers were up there with the best thin and crisp! The staff were friendly and helpful. Once i returned to grannies with the goods, the family looked at the menu and sent me back for battered mars bars! That was a blast from the past, delighted xx

Sorry Alex your crispy beef was not crispy. The first chinese takeaway I have not been able to eat !! It didn't taste freshly cooked and we waited over 15 minutes for it. Not impressed

Having previously criticised this Takeaway, I decided to give it another chance. I got what I ordered this time, and the food was good.I can only conclude that on the previous occasion I was given some one elses meal. I had ordered a special curry and goodness knows what I was given.

Found this amazing Chinese restaurant whilst staying at nearby Embo. The food is amazing, very reasonable priced too.I like the fact that rice or chips is included in the price of the dish.

Excellent takeaway . Delicious fresh dishes . Especially the Thai curry . Large portions . Alex even made our child a special beef chow mien on the house ! Just wish this takeaway was on our doorstep !

Disappointed as they have stopped taking credit cards.Had to hike it to ATM.Don't tend to carry £20/30 around.Would come back if they have a re-think.

I ordered Special Curry with Fried Rice. When I got home ready to enjoy my Takeaway meal, I found that I had Special Gravy with Plain Rice. There was absolutely no taste of Curry and the rice was definitely not Fried Rice.I was 3 miles away so did not return to complain.I will definitely avoid this Takeaway in the future, and would advise everyone to do the same.

Bought a take out meal whilst on holiday . Was great value as all our dishes the cost of rice was included in price whilst our normal take outs this is extra.All our meals were still piping hot by the time we travelled back to our accommodation .I had king prawn curry and the prawns were really good quality and well cooked .My family were equally impressed by their meals.We were certainly return here when next in area

Ordered here on our first night when holidaying in embo few miles outside of dornoch i had chicken curry and fried rice my partner had sweet and sour chicken both dishes were very tasty only waited 10 mins from placing my order

On our last night in Dornoch, we decided to have a takeaway. We popped in and chose what we wanted from an extensive menu. I think they had just recently changed the menu as when we were served by a young boy, he didnt know where to find the meal we ordered on the till. He went in the back and brought out another young boy, I assume his brother, to take the order.I assume there were adults in the back cooking the meals, but was nice that it was evidently a family business and everyone chipping in. The food was cooked quickly and was very good. The prce for 3 people for starters, 3 mains and sides came to just over £20, which I thought was briliant.

Well worth a visit here, excellent food , definitely recommend, the wait for the food was 10minutes , great

We decided to have a Chinese takeaway on Saturday when we were staying at Dornoch the portions are big and are very good we had a variety of different dishes and the were all very good i would recommend it for anyone wanting a Chinese takeaway.

We made an order whilst at grannies heilan hame. The food we got was average at best but the chips were missing which upset the kids no end and the wifes beef dish had turned into a szechuan chicken!!We called to complain and to be fair the young lad did his best to help only to be barked at in chinese by whom iassume is the owner. Point blank refused to deliver the missing/incorrect food to us seemingly happy to take our money but not to correct the mistakes which should have been checked before the order leftFoods probably about a 3 star as what we did get was nice enough but useless service in this day and age we wont return which is a shame

I don't know how this place gets rubbish reviews. I love the food here! I always order food here when i come to dornoch for my holidays as its the most reliable and consistent takeaway in this lovely town. Just love their duck in plum sauce. The owners are welcoming, friendly and always try to accommodate my dietary requirements as i am gluten intolerant.

We regularly have a Chinese from Alex's. The food is superb and actually we have found that they are great value for money! Never had to complain and we enjoy every meal we have had. Thanks!

If you are in Dornoch, This is a great place to order Takeaway Food. Expect large sized portions of tasty, freshly prepared piping hot food. The staff here are always friendly and helpful. At very busy times you may have a short wait but its well worth it!Excellent value for money.We have been eating here for many years with zero complaints :D

I have been back and fore to this Chinese for about 18 years and I have never been disappointed! Great service and just love the food. I have a Chinese more local to me but the food is gross there, so I always travel 30 mins to go to Dornoch instead. Thank you!!

As the only Chinese in Dornoch understandably it is a busy place. Extensive menu with lots to choose from including decent children's list. Food was very good though not exceptional but no complaints from our gang with largely empty plates all round so it passed the one true test with flying colours! Some dishes a little pricy but overall good value. Would eat here again.

Ordered a chicken and peppers with black bean sauce and a Kung Po chicken. Were on holiday in Embo and decided to go in and order a takeaway. Waited about 25-30 mins but it was very tasty and we would definitely use it again

By far the worst takeaway I have had. We both had sweet and sour chicken. The chicken was chewy the batter coating the chicken was a pale couloir. The sauce was tasteless. Fryer rice was dry and over cooked.

I always travel to Dornoch for Chinese food, as the quality and taste by far exceeds other places locally. The take away service is fairly quick and price is reasonable. You can tell by the fact that it is always busy how good the food is. Im hard pushed to recommend any one thing as I've had quite a few of the dishes and nothing has disappointed me so far.A good reliable take away!

We ordered a meal while we staying at a camp a few miles away on holiday from Devon food was very good but they forgot our chilli chips it would have taken too long to go back again for our meal to. Stay warm the portions were enouth without the chips and did not put us off our meal..maybe if we visit again we may ask for a credit note on the chips ha ha

i love the food from Alex's takeaway. wide choice on the menu and they've accommodated my occasional meat free requests with good humour, producing excellent results with clearly fresh (and plentiful) vegetables - i'd particularly recommend the singapore noodles and the salt and chilli chips. i've been going there regularly for about 3 years and have never had a bad meal - even tried the deep fried mars bar once...

Has been in Dornoch for years I remembered cycling here as a kid to get some chips! Still here years later. Food is great. Love it.

Went for a takeaway as they're supposedly open 7 days, shut so won't bother again. Not missing much really as it's pretty dire in any case. Just wanted a night off from cooking after a hard day at work.

We arrived late at Dornoch and could not get a table at one of the restaurants, because they were already full. As we were really hungry we just entered the next best location, which was the Chinese Takeaway and did not regret it. Friendly service, really quick, tasty food and reasonable prices - really nothing to complain about.

We read the reviews before purchasing our meal and have to say our food did not quite meet expectations that were described, that said it was not the worst Chinese meal we have ever had f and would do if you are in the area where there is limited choice to go elsewhere ( the higher prices reflect this). The Chinese takeaway was a short drive away from the caravan park we were staying in so we were particularly disappointed to return back to our caravan and realise they had given us a sweet and tangy tasting Chinese gravy type sauce instead of curry sauce, our meal was therefore served dry as no one liked the sauce and the meal would have been too cold the time it takes to drive back down to the shop to replace.
