went down today for a spot of lunch and some strawberry picking. we had a fantastic time at the farm! Inside the cafe looks lovely, they have a very warm and welcoming atmosphere. the menu was great with something for everyone, we liked how there was an option for a light bite or a more substational meal. I had the Brisket Panini special and my partner had the pulled pork burger, both were a perfect size and incredibly tasty. We were then offered desserts, we had an affogato and the strawberry pancake stack, both of which looked and tasted amazing! The service was top notch and every staff member was really informative and friendly, they made us feel very welcome during our time here. After lunch we went strawberry picking in the fields which was a great time and a really nice way to spend the day. we will definitely be back and would 100 percent reccomend anyone to try it out! ❤️

Lucky enough to have moved down to Hillside and Charleton Farm is right on our doorstep. We've been regular visitors since arriving here and it never fails to disappoint. The menu is varied enough to cover most tastes and requirements and the quality is always top notch. The majority of ingredients are locally sourced or produced by the farm itself. Whether it's a full lunch for a birthday celebration, a quick stop for coffee & cake or a spot of breakfast it's always delivered. Whenever we have visitors we always bring them too. Lovely food, lovely staff, lovely atmosphere and a lovely setting. You can't go wrong

Spotted a sign for this place on the road out of Montrose, and stopped by to check it out. The play park was excellent for our child, and the Halloween themed photo ops etc were a bonus. We went into the restaurant/cafe for food, and while it did take a while for our order to be taken, it didn't take too long for food to come out. Decent coffees and some lovely cakes. The farm shop had a nice selection of items too. Would swing by again on a sunny day to let the kid tire herself out.

We had an excellent lunch here. It looked quite busy when we arrived but we were made welcome and soon seated. They have outdoor seating some of which is undercover. Their lunch menu includes burgers, salads, paninis, baked potatoes, mac'n'cheese. Service was swift, polite and professional. Sadly no room for pudding for me, but the boys had affogato and the gooiest- looking chocolate brownie. The breakfast menu (10- 11:30) looked very tempting. Plenty of car-parking on site, about 5 min out of montrose heading north, also a shop and pick your own fruit. Not far from St Cyrus nature reserve which is a great place for a walk.

Always a lovely welcome. Very busy just now as loads of folk come to pick their own berries. No worries re parking, though as overflow is in the adjacent field. The food is always delicious and plenty of it. I really enjoy the vegan platters, a great selection of tasty treats, accompanied by oatcakes or chunky bread. If you still have room ,there is the vegan brownie to linger over and don't miss the coffee! The wee shop is worth a poke around, for foodie treats or gift shopping.

We stumbled across this place for lunch after a walk along St Cyrus beach. Were looking for somewhere dog friendly with lovely food and this ticked all the boxes. You can sit inside or outside with dogs, outside has both covered and non-covered tables so great no matter the weather. Lovely menu and food was delicious. Also has a farm shop and pick-your-own berries when in season, along with playback for kids. Set in gorgeous countryside away from hustle and bustle of town. Would definitely recommend.

We stopped here for lunch, having been here before we were looking forward to it. Too cold to sit outside so were shown to a table inside, the log burner was kicking out smoke into the room and making it very hazy inside. The smoke left our clothes smelling of it all day. We ordered mac n cheese, with a filter coffee and a diet coke. The mac n cheese was ok but could have been warmer. Filter coffee was asked for without milk but cup was still only half full. The young waitress was friendly and polite. We had finished our lunch and still had some drinks to finish when the older waitress appeared with our bill and the payment machine, bit abrupt and we got the feeling we were being hurried out despite the fact there were only 3 couples sitting at this time. Not the best lunch out we've had !

Visited midweek for lunch with friends. Unlike during the school holidays there was no need to book ahead. A lovely early autumn day allowed us to eat outside and, even though there was a chance of rain the semi-covered tables ensured that had it arrived lunch would not have been spoiled. The staff were attentive but not overbearing, polite, and knowledgeable of the menu. The meno was extensive and full of freshly prepared meals, many appeared to have been made from local produce The food, although not particularly cheap was plentiful and filling but left enough room for the very tasty desserts. All in all a great experience.

Had a lovely lunch served by great, attentive young staff. Slightly expensive but ok as a treat. However we had a young baby with us and found the changing facilities to be ridiculous and in this day and age frankly disgraceful! The tiniest space imaginable given to a fold down changing table. Impossible for a mum on her own to use without putting changing bag on the floor below right in front of the toilet....disgusting! Also cannot get a pushchair anywhere near the room. Come on.... for a family centred place its unbelievable.

Stopped here for snack lunch. Wide and varied menu and very fast and efficient service. What makes this a place to visit is it's curious setting. Old stables and barns have been converted into little sections for tables and a shop. Duck your head before going into the main barn and enjoy the curios hung up on the wall. Outside the 'grow your own' was closed as it was too early in the season but well worth a visit for families and children.

Quirky and cute. Ate there this morning and opted for the sweet potato & coconut soup with toasted tuna and gooseberry chutney ciabatta roll. Absolutely delicious. Great value too. Filtered coffee was decent. Cosy table with the stove burner (first time I visited was during the warm summer where we ate outside). Really efficient service. Great outdoor and indoor areas for younger children. Was annoyed to see a family chowing down packets of crisps with their kiddies in the boot obviously having a picnic right in front of the PLEASE NO PICNICS sign. As well as the coffee shop/ restaurant which serves excellent food, there is an ice cream shop inside the play area. Four adults and six small children we visited this place to pick berries for tarts and jam and to generally have a fun day out. When you enter you are faced with big notices telling you not to picnic. There are staff walking about telling people not to eat their own food while they are visiting. Its a very odd set up.We were having a sandwich and coke in the boot of our car when we were approached by a "picnic policeman"anxiously telling us not picnic. When asked why he said that if we ate our own food we wouldn't buy their food at the cafe.I explained that we had no intention of using the cafe but that we were about to spend a lot of money buying other products. The penny just didn't drop and we were immediately alienated by the conflict caused by this illogical policy. We ate our sandwiches and the children were happy playing in the fields but its a real downer for families coming with a smile on their faces to be confronted by an aggressive atmosphere and confrontational staff..They need to sort this out by perhaps opening a picnic area with rubbish bins and toilets and offering sandwitches and drinks etc from an onsite stall.Further the play park is not a safe or suitable place for small children. It needs risk assessed and its a real accident waiting to happen spot.Visiting traffic is badly supervised and it crosses the path of playing children.I don't understand how the local Council permit this place to operate.I think that i will let them know whats going on.Finally inadequate toilet facilities that are dirty into the bargain.Disgraceful.Don't go here if you want a family day out

We stopped by with two elderly relatives for a nice farm lunch, it is a very popular place in summer. The food was good but way overpriced, for four of us it came to £38! That was with three paninis and a goats cheese salad, and four coffees. The quality of meals did not equate to the cost. Overall we would go back but for a coffee and a piece of cake rather than a meal. I also bought a punnet on strawberries to take home and unfortunately some of them were very hard as the leaves had already been taken out.

I have been here countless times before and have always had a positive experience; the food is generally very good and my little girl loves the play area. Sadly this has now been overshadowed by the extremely negative experience I had today which has left me feeling very disappointed. I'm not normally one to write negative reviews as I understand that nowhere is perfect and everywhere will get it wrong once in a while, but today took the biscuit. Essentially I was unsatisfied with my lunch so brought it to the attention of a waitress. The waitress handled it very well and I was more than satisfied with the option of a replacement. The owner however took it upon herself to come over and make me justify at least four times why I wasn't satisfied with the lunch. The same person returned at the end when we questioned why I was being charged for half a meal and the response we received was less than favourable to say the least. I'd go as far to say I've never received such bad customer service, from an owner no less! Thankfully this style of customer service doesn't seem to have filtered down to the remaining staff as they are always pleasant and helpful. So my advice is go, enjoy the food but would recommend you don't make any complaints as they are not taken well!

Stopped here for lunch. The eating areas have been converted from stables and make a great dining room. We came just before Halloween and they had really 'gone to town' on the decoration. A nice log burning stove made for a cosy atmosphere in a quite a large area and staff were very pleasant. Lunches were straightforward baked potato combinations, panini etc but tasty and well presented. I am sure that calling in for a coffee and cake would be equally pleasant. One word of warning - not about the coffee shop but about the road entrance. It is not easily spotted (there are signs but...) and requires a sharp left turn, off a busy road, if coming from Montrose which can be a bit scary if not prepared for it. All in all, well worth a visit for a light lunch or coffee.

This farm is highly popular with children as the owners have gone out of their way to provide excellent play facilities for children. There are trampolines, a race track, a fort and little wendy houses for children to explore. There is usually home made soup at lunch time and in the summer you can pick your own fruit. My grandchildren enjoy Charleton more than any other place in the Montrose area. The shop provides gifts and good home made jams and relishes.

This is a great place to eat and a good place to take children. Outside the restaurant they have a very good activity area for children. The food is of very high quality and is well presented and is good value for money. They have a good farm shop as well. well worth a visit if you are in the area.

Have been coming here for years and always had a good experience. Food and service good and the play area is great for kids and it's free! Gluten free and vegetarian options available. Can get busy especially during summertime so go early.

This is a place we go to have lunch three times a. Year. The atmosphere is stepping out of the hurrly burrly in life. The staff are brilliant, happy and great with their customers and in a natural way. They are fun to witness, chatty humorous. Obviously when it gets really busy they have a job to do but still great with it.The hostess is great and spends a bit of time with the diners. It's all done in a pleasant way. We're already had a great time here and not even got round to the food which includes vegetarian options.Lovely menu, soups always a nice starter and the rest of the menu never disappointed. The build up to Halloween is a piece of genious and our favourite time to visit.

The day we were there, the sun was out and the air was warm, so we sat in the outside area. We were offered the menus promptly, and our order was sent electronically to the kitchen from the waitress's hand-held gadget. Despite it being a busy day during the school holidays, and at the height of fruit picking on the farm, our soup and bread arrived almost as soon as the order was sent. Both the soups we had were tasty, well seasoned and a good sized bowl full. We then fell for a desert from the menu: both were oversized for our preference, decorated with cream and their own raspberries, but far far too sweet. A case for a sugar tax if ever there was one!

Stopped for coffee & scones after fruit picking, the scones were the worst I've had, a supermarkets own brand would be better. Small and only about 2 cm high. I knew they weren't made onsite, but they could be so much better. The blackcurrant jam was really runny too, not worth £2.25. Disappointing.

We took our twin Granddaughters to Charleton for lunch, and we thoroughly enjoyed it. Hubby had a Panini with Cheese, ham and chilli jam and a side salad, the girls had Coronation Chicken sandwiches which came with Nachos, and I had a baked potato with tuna and red onion and a side salad and Nachos. It was served quicker than we expected and was delicious. I couldn't finish my baked tattle although I ate most of the Tuna and the leafy salad with the delicious dressing on it. After lunch the girls went to play in the huge play park which has every conceivable toy for toddlers, small and large kids, a ground level Trampoline, Play houses, hay bales for climbing on, a huge fort, slides, swings, pedal carts on a course. Brilliant. You could in fact spend the whole day there. I'd recommend it to everyone. Especially the deliciously huge strawberry tarts and other enormous desserts served with fresh berries from the farm. Yummy!

The strawberry tart, and the green tea and raspberry sponge cake were delicious. The "vegan" (as stated on the menu) sandwich (without cheese) arrived with cheese, but was swapped over. The service was mixed. One of the girls was lovely and helpful, however the main focus with the rest seemed to be on chatting amongst themselves, and another even proceeded to almost run away from me as I chased after her, repeatedly calling to get her attention, to rush back to continue her conversation with her pal, the other server. We found the general seating area to be very dark and gloomy, in comparison to the "families only" area through the other side, which looked bright and cheery and welcoming (not sure who decides what age a child has to be in order for a family to be deemed a "family").We would come back, as the cakes were lovely, and nice to have a refreshing cuppa after a session of fruit picking. The rasps, strawberries and blackcurrants we picked were really tasty!

Another awesome day at Charleton Farm.Went berry picking last week here and was brilliant. Plenty of good fruit left to pick & the pricing was beyond reasonable. We collected 2 full plastic tubs. 1 of strawberries and the other of yellow Raspberries. Now a quarter of these tubs from tescos or Asdas would cost £2-3 each tub. Both our tubs came to £3.50 at Charleton. So needless to say it's a awesomely cheap family day out.Excellent.

Spent the morning picking fruit at the farm and finished off with a couple of lattes, a bacon and egg butty and a scone. Service was prompt and friendly, the cafe/restaurant was nicely furnished both indoors and outside. The food was nicely presented and delicious. The menu was comprehensive with good choices for breakfast and lunch. We will definitely be going back for more!

Went here for a coffee and cake. The cakes were terrific served with fresh fruit and cream was a nice extra. The coffee was good but my Latte glass was not filled. It was a smallish glass and only filled to three quarters of an inch from the top. Would have got 5 stars if the coffee had been a full glass.

Excellent for lunch or coffee and cake winter or summer. Warms fires in the barn in winter - homemade soup is excellent - and sit out in the summer with fabulous strawberry tarts with your coffee. Excellent children's play area for families and you can also pick your own strawberries and raspberries in season. Well worth a visit.

We both had a very pleasant full breakfast on 29/10/24 in Purdy’s & were served by two ladies who were very welcoming. Good value. Good vibe. We will definitely go back Thank you!

Gorgeous battered chicken fillets and a fresh fillet of fish. The service was superb and the quality of the food was second to none. We even managed to get a portion of scraps. Best fish and chips we’ve both had in a long time and reasonably priced in comparison to Aberdeen.

Attached to the Forfar Golf Driving Range, this cafe/restaurant is always busy and, for some reason, despite it being carpeted, is usually quite noisy! The menu is fairly standard with filled rolls, sandwiches, paninis, soup, baked potatoes etc. Prices are reasonable and the service is usually very good. It is light and airy due to the large windows at one end. I like it in part, as I can see the rural house I grew up in from it in the distance.

We were there for Christmas Dinner yesterday everything was lovely except for the Brussels sprouts which were too hard and I saw the sprouts were left on a number of plates from nearby tables but the service was excellent when I booked I told them I was on crutches and they accommodated me very well. I can't say enough good things about the staff as they were excellent in all respects
