Stopped for lunch after walking from Lustleigh with a friend on Tuesday 26/3. She had a tasty baguette and I had the most delicious cheesy chips. The service was great, the atmosphere was warm and cosy and the waitress was so welcoming. The cakes looked amazing too. We're planning a return visit soon

Staff friendly, last nice thing I have to say, it feels like it could do with a good clean, cutlery was sticky, coffee was stale, chipped crockery. Not very impressed, the cafe feels like it needs to find an identity

We had a lovely meal here on Sunday. Ok so no roast, but the chips were home made and tasted gorgeous, well cooked tasty eggs and lovely ham. Was attracted to this cafe rather than the opposition because of the appealing second hand goods & arty things on sale as well as a tasty and moderately priced menu. Had a beautifully cooked full English breakfast & hot chocolate. The sausages were definitely local produce (Rose) & the bacon too, I think, served with a large, fresh grilled tomato, wonderfully crispy hash browns, beans etc. Very well cooked, very tasty, good value. Premises were very busy but we didn't have to wait long at all & it didn't matter anyway as there were plenty of books & other things to look at on the shelves. Lots of people were picking vegetarian options which also looked very tasty. Lots of nice touches, like sauce in a nice glass bottle (not branded), FairTrade napkins etc.

I have stopped in Moretonhampstead six times on three visits to Dartmoor, and have had coffee here each time. It's a great place to sit in the sunshine and relax after some arduous driving dodging sheep or avoiding bumping into cars on single-track roads. The coffee is good - decaff can so often be dishwater, but this has some flavour. The price is very reasonable, too. The staff are relaxed and friendly. I will definitely stop there again next time I'm passing through.

We came up from Newton Abbot for a walk and bite to eat. We each had a breakfast (one veggie one standard) and it was absolutely delicious. When we walked in there were a few people seated but both visible members of staff said good morning and the lay handed us a menu. There was a young lad behind the counter who was very friendly and polite and took our order. The lady who brought out (and presumably cooked?) our breakfasts was very pleasant and when she popped the plates down said that the hash browns had been a bit overdone and so she was bringing us a couple more! This was very kind and going above and beyond but they did go down a treat. Several others came in whilst we were seated and everyone was attended very quickly. We would definitely recommend and will definitely be back!

I've eaten here a few times and called in for coffees. The Cafe has a down to earth feel to it. The coffee is good and I tried the aubergine gratin from the specials menu last week and it was excellent. Although only one high chair is available this is a suitable eatery for parents (& grandparents) and toddlers. Worth noting that payment is by cash only - there is a cash machine nearby. WHEN you are tired after holiday driving down Devon roads so narrow they are more suited to a Dinky toy then you need a decent place to stop and soothe shattered nerves with a coffee. The Central Cafe in the heart of Moretonhamstead could have been made for us with a lovely choice of coffees and some delicious cakes including millionaire`s shortbread and Apricot Danish, both of which we had.Staff were very friendly and not only served us quickly with a smile but brought us up to date with local attractions and new places to visit, very handy as the Visitor Centre next door was closed that day.The cafe itself is well laid out without the utilitarian feel that so many cafes have and we liked the way we could just slide into a little alcove area and watch the world go by while we ate and drank.Toilets at the back of the cafe were clean and well kept, newspapers were available to read free of charge and there were books for children to read.We would recommend any traveller to take a break here and leave feeling refreshed, happy and armed with all the local information they might need.

I called in here on a long bike ride after it was recommended as a good stop.Asked for decaffeinated coffee. When I ordered I made a joke to be sire it was decaff 'otherwise you might need an ambulance (because caffeine sets my heart racing dangerously) and when it came I checked with server that it was decaff - she said 'I think so' - I asked her to check...it wasn't! It was replaced but it was so luke warm as to be practically cold.As I was sat there a person came on with a large retriever type dog and sat at a table - it was NOT an assistance dog. Three servers passed the dog and each time they stroked and patted the dog (one gave it a titbit from the kitchen). They all carried on preparing ans serving food without washing their hands even though one of them actually let the dog lick their hands and then proceeded to take plates of food to a table with their thumbs holding the top side of the plate (no trays).I couldn't hold my tongue any longer and quietly suggested she wash her hands after touching the dog and she said 'Yes, I will...' but proceeded to serve another customer at which point I suggested quietly that she might want to wash them at that point because she had let the dog slaver over her hand.My feet were sticking to the floor it was so greasy with ingrained dirt.Really ought to be avoided this place until they have got their act together.

Only went in for a cappuccino, and so far this was the worst coffee we had in Devon. Bitter, too strong and the milk was burnt (= served too hot). We have been very lucky until then to have had some wonderful coffee in Bovey Tracey and Totnes, but sadly this place was no better than a petrol station coffee stop. Couldn't finish mine. The milk heating machine used is also the noisiest I have ever heard.Having said that the food may be good for all I know, the cakes looked good indeed. But for coffee lovers, be warned.

My wife and I stopped here for breakfast this morning. We each ordered egg and beans on brown toast. When the meals arrived they were both barely warm. My wife told the cook who said he would remedy it. He did this by sticking her food in a microwave oven, resulting in soggy toast and a rubber egg. I decided to eat my tepid offering. Not a word of apology was offered nor any recompense for this awful offering. Never again!

A decent salad with a baked potato and fish and home made chips was our order at lunchtime. We were warned by the friendly waitress that there would be a wait. That came as a bit of a surprise as the fish and chips was the daily special and advertised as such on the board outside the café. But no problem, we weren't in a hurry, especially as the fish and chips was, if I remember well, a reasonable £6.50, the baked potato with veg chili less. The wait was a little longer than we bargained for, but no worry - hunger makes the best appetite. The chips were good: more like well-done french fries. The fish was, I think, pollock and a bit of a disappointment after visits to fish and chip shops on the south coast. Bonus: the tartare sauce was home made.To sum up: an attractive and comfortable café with reasonable food. With just less of a wait and a coupe of tweaks it would make 4 stars.Warning: cash only. Cards not accepted.

Moretonhampstead is about 20 miles up on the moor from home, but there is a good butchers there. So when up there we have breakfast in the Central Stores, a slightly miss leading name, it is a café. It is in the main street and you cannot miss it. We have 'The Works' breakfast at £6.95, with other cheaper choices. It uses good thick cut bacon and good sausages. The coffee is Puro. The young staff are always pleasant and know the local customers. It can get busy in the holiday season with visitors passing through. There are two 'pay and display' car parks at each end of the village, and a 30min parking along the main street. All in all a great place to stop off for drinks and eats.

The staff were a little unpredictable, helpful and friendly one minute, offhand the next.I think it would help to have a consistent approach to when payment is taken. When I left I was kept waiting by someone paying at the same time as ordering. I had not been given that option, and would have appreciated paying at the outset, so as to leave promptly at the end.

Central Café is right on the main Street in Moretonhampstead and provided a bit of a haven for us during our week under canvas in the area. They do a wide range of teas and coffees and, most importantly do a big breakfast - £6.50- which brightened a couple of damp and miserable mornings considerably and contained the best black pudding my wife has ever had!. There were papers available to read and we were encouraged to ask for toast refills! Most usefully, there is an internal door from the café to the Tourist Information office next door which was a great and welcoming place to plan local visits with the help of the very friendly ladies in there.

SOME of the best refreshment breaks you take can be those where you go into a place on a whim.So it was with this cafe which we chose for a quick break having already driven nearly 100 miles on our way to Cornwall. The place beguiled us almost as soon as we walked in because this was not your standard cafe and had a lovely homey atmosphere, cosy little seating alcoves, book shelves and bright colours not to mention some mouth-watering home-made cakes. We ordered coffee and tea from the very friendly staff and just eased ourselves into a booth to relax, looking round and taking everything in.As its name says, the cafe forms part of the Central Stores in the middle of Moretonhampstead and it offers specialist teas, an enticing array of cakes and a range of breakfasts including vegetarian as well as the usual ways of feeding a hungry traveller through sandwiches, jacket potatoes and main meals.A Dartmoor cream tea will set you back £4.75, milkshakes are £2.60 and the owners have a "dogs welcome" policy. The toilets were also neat and clean. It didn't take us long to realise that this coffee shop had another very useful asset, namely it was right next to a very good Information Centre with scores of attraction leaflets which you can reach by simply walking through an archway actually inside the cafe.We made good use of both cafe and Centre, browsed some very good wood-turned gifts and left having taken on board a lot of friendly advice from both sets of staff. All in all this is a very good choice for a quality coffee break, particularly as Moretonhampstead is almost the gateway to Dartmoor and getting details of what the moor has to offer can affect what route you take across it.

Found this spot, asked if they could do it quick and lo verily! The waitress had a SENSE OF URGENCY!! I have owned restaurants, and it is such a relief to see someone be aware and capable of reacting to a request. "I need breakfast quick - can you do it" - " Yes. What would you like.....?" Order taken quickly, passed through to the kitchen with an audible "This lady is in a hurry", drink brought immediately, cutlery minutes later, and then a lovely breakfast 5 minutes after that. Went to Moretonhampstead for the weekend with friends and this was the only place open (sandwiched between a tempting charity shop and the information centre - talk about the perfect location!). Not expecting much I was so pleased to see a whole wall of local art and crafts (not cheap but really lovely). I ordered coffee (bit fussy about coffee as I'm from London and it's an art form here, rightly or wrongly). Okay, so the coffee was excellent so I thought I would try a bacon sandwich. Not sure where they get their bacon from but it was actually one of the best bacon sarnies I've had (when I don't make it myself) The bacon was beautiful, cooked perfectly to order and the service was really friendly. This was my first visit under the new ownership. I go down to visit my Aunt about five times a year and always stop off here for breakfast because it's always been so good. The new staff are lovely and very helpful. The cafe has changed a lot, it feels a bit cold and bare now - the homely, warm atmosphere is missing. My breakfast was nice. However, the previous lovely sausage was not lovely anymore, it was overcooked and dry and tasted like a cheaper alternative. It also gave me incredible indigestion for the rest of the day. The mushrooms were OK but I preferred the breakfast mushrooms to the button type they are now serving. Otherwise the breakfast was fine. Unfortunately there was an overwhelming, unpleasant smell of cooking which made my clothes smell. Luckily the toilets are still lovely and clean, although the mirror had been removed which I find strange for a ladies loo. Coffee was just OK. I will give them another try, by which time they will hopefully have sorted themselves out. Sorry, a bit disappointing!

As a few recent reviews have pointed out there are new owners of this cafe and the welcome is so much better than it used to be....even though one of them worked here as an employee under the old regime... she has changed the mood and it is now a pleasure to call in here. My cooked breakfast was great and very good value for money. Also, those milky coffees are all very well, but the acid test of a cafe for me is whether the espresso is any good - it didn't used to but now it comes with a nice crema....well the new owners are half Italian and French so they clearly get it. Cakes look good too. As does the rest of the menu - it doesn't try to overreach and offers the kind of stuff you'd expect. I've only ever breakfasted here up till now but may well try it for lunch in the New Year now you no longer feel you're being a nuisance for calling in.

Dropped in here last Sunday with a group for cyclists for a mid-ride coffee stop. Others had been keen to stop here as they'd heard that it had recently been taken over by new owners (I got the impression they may have experienced some issues here before). I'm glad to report that we all had a lovely stop here. There were twelve of us and the staff had no problem serving us quickly and courteously. No mistakes in the orders, all delivered with a smile and pleasant attitude. We'd definitely go back and recommend to others.

Popped in with a friend for a coffee. A very tasty cup of coffee and couldn't resist the lovely Lemon Drizzle cake to go with it! Very helpful staff - even brought us a small jug of hot water in case our coffee was too strong. We will certainly be going back again!

We stopped at this cafe and ordered a few sandwiches ( just plain old cheese and tomato etc). There were about 3 other people in the cafe and a few people came in and ordered off the counter. 30 minutes later, our sandwiches hadn't arrived so I asked the girl at the counter how much longer it might take. She said, '2 minutes' and 10 minutes later came the sandwiches. When I asked why it took 40 minutes, pat came a rude reply with a ruder attitude - 'Excuse me, we are operating a queue'. Not even an attempt to be courteous and apologetic. I wasn't sure if it was just the girl trying to set a very low bar for service or if there was some racist tilt to it ( we are Indian). All in all a very unpleasant experience - oh and the sandwiches were a good quantity but pretty average tasting.

We were touring by car after a visit to Finch Foundry and decided that we would have a light lunch so we parked in Moretonhampstead and walked around to see what was available. We settled on this cafe and are very glad that we did. We shared a variety of drinks and sandwiches and my 11 year old daughter had a cheese scone which she says was Excellent which is high praise from someone who is quite a connoisseur of them. We live in the vicinity of the Yorkshire Dales where food quality is rarely anything less than very good (though not inexpensive) so the cheese scone must have been good. The cafe and decor are good, the service was excellent. I wouldn't hesitate to eat there again and I wish them well with the business in the future.

We went here after doing a walk and found it was perfect for a late lunch. The food here is all fairly standard cafe fare but it is well cooked/prepared, very tasty, comes in a good quantity and is a good price. All the staff were very friendly and the locals seemed keen customers too, which i think is always a good sign.If i was in Moretonhampstead again I would certainly eat here again.

Ordered coffee and cheese scones, well the coffee wasn't hot and the scone was a plain sweet scone with grated cheese put on top, not good and didn't enjoy. The staff however were very polite

We visited the little café for brunch, it was pouring with rain and were made very welcome by the staff. we had burgers which I must say were really good ( I am not a burger fan) followed by a cream tea, with warm fruit scones, jam and cream .. just delicious .. I will return and enjoy food there again hopefully on a dry day!!

Ok, the service is not 5 star (but not awful), it does smell a little of fried food, but the cream tea I had was lovely - the best freshest scone I have had ... pretty much ever, and that includes eating warm scones from 2 grannies ovens as a kid). The texture.... to me, it was the best! And I was more than happy to tell them behind the counter that the scone was great.

We nipped in to this cafe for a takeaway tea. The sour faced woman took my order and my tea arrived. I noticed that milk had been added, I politely told her l'd've like to add my own as llike my tea very strong. She snipped that I couldn't take the milk away, l smiled and said I just wanted to add a drop..She summoned one of her waitresses and told them to add another bag in....great (not)I pointed at the sign for Cream Teas and ordered two scones, when they arrived, I asked if the cream etc was inside the bag. She sighed and told me that wasn't what I asked for. She then pointed to a sign like a 'deal'...which included scones with tea. Again l smiled and apologized I hadn't seen this sign. She priced up my order...her face was cold and very unfriendly. But if she'd pointed this out to me when l first ordered... it would've saved the extremely unpleasant atmosphere she created.I'm the customer standing in front of everyone whilst she makes me feel very uncomfortable. The waitress then came over to ask...."Do you want your scones defrosting!!"? Ha ha ...yes please, l choose not to gnaw on frozen food !!Finally to add insult to this charade, the tea bags were left in our drinks !!What a shambles, she even undercharged me !!Sullen and totally lacking in any idea of how to treat the general public. She needs to greet her PAYING customers with a smile and welcome them warmly...there are many, many places in Devon to enjoy cream teas, choose any one of them but avoid this one at all costs.

After a weird experience at the Union Inn (see my review of the Union Inn) we decided to check out this little diner style coffee shop with our two children. The staff were very efficient, welcoming and friendly. We had drinks, toasties, pasties, english breakfast for lunch and some bakes afterwards. They were all nice, fresh and tasty. Yes, we're not talking about gourmet-level food here, but we walked inside aware of the fact that this is a cafe after all and they had great variety as well as flexibility to customize their menu options according to our preferences. I noticed that at the till they asked every customer if everything was OK, which I take as a sign of being open to input and criticism. All in all, a nice, relaxed, welcoming, uncomplicated lunch experience in a beautiful part of Dartmoor. Well recommended.

Coffee was very poor - ordered black coffee and received white and when I queried wss told "well I made it now". Sandwich was fine but nothing special and "toasted" cheese was just a lump of cheese raw in middle and lightly singed on outside. To cap it all when bill came I was charged for the black coffee I never received as well as the white one which I didn't order! I will not return.

Great little venue. We had all day breakfast and a pot of tea. Great sausages, lovely bacon, all freshly cooked and well presented. All the staff were polite, attentive and friendly and even produced a treat for our collie dog (who was sitting quietly under the table). They also produce lovely bakery goods to eat in or take out. We will definitely be going back again.

I ordered a coffee and lunch and had a sip of my own water and was rudely told by the lady working there that this was not acceptable in this country. When I went to leave she offered me tap water and said that would be ok.I left and thought its not what she said to me but how she said it.

We often pop into the Country Table for Brunch/morning coffee. The food is cooked fresh to order, you can swap ingredients on a standard breakfast (eg mushrooms for beans) free of charge. The cakes and scones are nice. The service at the till is great, as are all the staff. It is great value for money.
