Castleton Fish & Chip Shop in High Peak

Absolutely lovely! After being let down for Sunday lunch around the corner, we headed here. My son had fish and chips. So fresh, very tasty and the portion for one was huge! The staff were lovely and helpful. Definitely worth a visit!

Called in dead on opening time today as I fancied fish and chips after my walk, and was warmly greeted, and my fish was cooked to order. When the food arrived, and I took a bite, well... quite simply the best fish and chips I've had in a long time. The chips were crispy, the fish batter was light, couldn't fault a thing. I just want to go back there right now! Just go, you won't be disappointed!

There is a reason why this little chip shop is always busy! Gorgeous hand cut chips made with local potatoes, huge Yorkshire fishcakes (and more) great customer service. You won't get better chips anywhere else.

We went to this fish amd chip shop on a recommendation. It is just down a side road, and has a few wooden tables outside. The chips were excellent, nice and crispy, the fish was tasty and a good texture. 10 out of 10.

Busy little chippy, staff friendly. We had some chips,was average, a little greasy. Dog friendly outside with small sitting area, inside sitting available.

Fish and chips were nice and hot. The clenliness of the place was extreemly poor to say the least. The vinegar bottles on the internal tables were filthy. The nozzles looked like they hadnt been cleaned for years. Absolutely filthy. Covered in dried sauce and general grime. Very dissapointing as they are a harbour for bacteria and germs. Rough and ready. Cant remember seeing as much grime in an eating establishment for a long time.No hygeine star rating to be seen anywhere. The counter front also needs a good clean up. Wont be going there again.

Great service, good old fashioned fish n chips n salt n vinegar n tomato ketchup. Cod tasty. Chips blocky but filled a gap.

OMG. The best fish, chips and curry in the UK! Fresh and piping hot. Fish must have been caught today. Queued up outside for 15 mins. Well worth it. Keep up the great work guys. Btw it closes at 7 on a Friday and they were still queuing up outside at 730

Excellent. Visited Castleton for a walk and to visit the caverns. We walked past the chip shop on the way out and decided to stop on our way back. Tucked away in a back street with limited opening hours. We had Fish and Chips which were lovely. Freshly cooked and tasty.

Limited opening hours but well worth it. After a week in this lovely Peak District village, we really fancied fish and chips and this place did not disappoint. Superb customer service, delicious fish, chips, scampi, sausages, fritters and mushy peas and excellent value - they threw in extras as were closing. Easy five stars

Called in here after a hike and because the wait in one of the village pubs was over an hour for food. So glad we ate here and not the pub. Best fish & chips I've ever had. My partner gave it 10 out of 10 and coming from him that means a lot, he's extremely fussy. Will definitely visit here again when next in the lovely little village of Castleton. It is a little out the way, from the main street and down a little alley but glad we came across it. Fabulous.

Stayed in Castleton this weekend at an AirBnB a minutes walk away. Had fish and chips the Friday night when we arrived which were good size portions and really tasty, long queues outside which is a good sign that it’s popular. Our cottage overlooked the square where people constantly walked past from opening to closing time sitting on the benches with their food from the chip shop so you know it’s the place to go! As watching football on Saturday clashed with timings to go to one of the local pubs to eat we decided to go again on Saturday for sausage and chips!

After a long walk up and down Mam Tor, and walking around Castleton, what better way to satisfy your craving for great fish and chips than coming here. A real find. Perfect fish and chips, curry sauce, mushy peas. Good value and quite honestly the best no nonsense take-away fish and chips I've had in a long time. A couple of benches outside make it easier to eat immediately (if the weather is ok, and not too busy). Remember to check opening times, as I think they are only open at weekends.

This is such a nice place, overall. The woman who serves is hard working, pleasant friendly and always provides a personal touch. There are long queues on bank holidays but it’s not too long a wait and such a treat. Just occasionally I’ve been slightly disappointed when the batter hasn’t been as crispy as I would have liked and the fish is a bit chewy. I don’t know what type of fish is used. Overall I highly recommended this chippy and the staff, who are lovely.

For the second time visited, they ran out of fish, can you believe it. Bank Holiday Monday, long queues and no fish!!!

We had lunch from Castleton fish and chips on Saturday. One of our party has allergies to peanut and sesame, and this was handled really well. Great chips, too.

This chippy is very popular serving reasonably priced fresh food. Expect to queue though. Only reason I marked down one star is it’s only been open at weekends when we’ve been from 4pm. Would be great if opened lunchtime and/or some evenings

Best chips and sausage in batter. I’m always a bit apprehensive about getting chips from somewhere I don’t know. This little shop was amazing though. The staff were friendly and the chips were truly amazing. I would definitely recommend to everyone

We used to visit as children and it’s not changed a bit. Perfect chips with generous individual portions. Service was with a smile, everyone was very polite and friendly.

turned away by 2 local pubs,,,,, but disappointed was soon turned into ecstasy when we came across one of the finest CHIP SHOPS in Derbyshire Managed to find a seat, to devour our gorgeous SAUSAGE + CHIPS washed down with a delightful Cuppa Neither of the 2 pubs could have offered such mouth watering delights as this only one thing to say now is A BIG THANKYOU

We came to castleton fish and chips Sunday the 6th of November just as they were closing and was served by the most lovely woman and the owner Shane who was so accommodating and nice the food was too good to not leave a review....

Had fish and chips with curry sauce and a tea cake, absolutely spot on and a good price as well, will definitely be back for more.

Was expecting this place to be horrendously over priced, but two fat chip baps, sausage and drinks all for under a tenner! Lovely chips and the young lad behind the counter was really pleasant. Lovely lad. Little benches outside. Definitely with bypassing the Main Street...

Both the fish and the chips were really good and were mentioned by my family for days as being so delicious.

Not the best chips to be hones and they are served on a polystyrene tray and the portion sizes are small.

Waited for over half an hour and there was only 5 people infront of me in the que just to be told the card machine is broken. No apology or anything was quite rude to be honest

Restricted winter opening hours but conveniently open 5 till 7 on a Friday evening. Delicious freshly cooked fish and no soggy chips. Good value too.

Been here today with my family waited 25 mins to be served as there was a really big que whilst it was raining paid £16.70 for 2 fish and chip specials which came wrapped we got to our destination to eat to realise no curry...

After a days hiking we decided to stop by for a late lunch and were not disappointed.A lovely friendly Lady served us fish..chips..and a fishcake..All was delicious,great portions and very reasonably priced..will definitely return.

Beautifully cooked cod with thin crispy batter and good chips - a wet Friday evening saved. Highly recommended. They will take 'phone orders but sadly only limited opening hours for the winter season.

Had a nice walk in the peak District with my son with the intention of finding a local village chippy for tea later. We came across the village of Castleton which is a beautiful area. We sat inside the chippy and had Chips, battered sausage...

Despite me turning up 5 minutes after their declared closing time they cooked me three generously, lovely sized fish suppers.

Had lovely good today but massively overcharged, fish and chip special @£8.00, one cheese on chips, one chip butty, one chips and battered sausage, two teas and a lemonade £27. Didn’t realise til we left how this was about £8 too much. Feel really cheated. Food was great though.

I popped in here as I was feeling a bit peckish before I visited the nearby caves … Sausage and Chips was lovely … The sausage was massive ( even though it wasn’t a jumbo ) and chips were also yummy … Was only £3.60 too so excellent value for such a tourist driven location. :-)

Stopped here on Sunday afternoon after not getting our food at Tilly’s of Castleton after waiting 45 mins for it. Thank god these were still open to save us! Very yummy and great customer service, thank you 😁

Visited today at lunchtime had the fish, chips, mushy peas and a cup of tea for £8 really good Value.The fish had lovely thin crispy batter and perfectly cooked. Plenty of nice chips and mushy peas all washed down with a good cuppa.Perfect end to along walk.

I asked for cod thinly battered .. never seen so much batter .. dry cod and thick batter . What a disappointment. Friendly staff though .

After walking for 4 hours we were starving so what better than some well earned fish & chips? A quick Google search near the National Trust Car Park at Mam Tor showed this place less than 2 miles away. Reviews were very positive so we thought we’d give it a go. Turned out to be a great decision. Everything was spot on. Fish superb, lovely chips, peas, gravy and curry sauce all top. Good choice of soft drinks. Queued for 15 minutes or so as it’s clearly a popular place but definitely worth the wait. We’ll be returning when next in the area.

I have seen other reviews rating this 1 or 2 stars without actually buying anything. That is just ridiculous! I'm a very picky eater and lacto vegetarian. I have a chip barm half way round my walk and they were some of the best chips I have ever had. The person serving was exceptionally polite and provided a very descent size portion for the price! I highly recommend and would just say read the reviews of people that have actually been. I plan on having another walk tomorrow and will definitely be calling in again!

A tiny little shop off the main roads of Castleton, this is a little tucked away treat serving perfectly fried fish and chips! The batter is incredible and the servings are very generous. I also had the scampi, which was incredibly juicy (and is honestly making my mouth water just talking about it now!). A great meal to have by the river, in the town centre or from the comfort of your own home-this is fish and chips done right! In the week we were here we ending up coming here twice rather than trying something new, we just enjoyed it so much!

Good portion fish and chips, fresh and delicious. Small shop but service were very friendly and several option. Only issue the open time, mostly just 12pm to 2pm, should be more flexible if more visitors there during the day.

Stopped off here on a busy Friday teatime in Castleton and we were not disappointed. The service was friendly and restrictions adhered to. They had run out of fish unfortunately, as they were so busy, but we were not disappointed with our fish, cod-bites and peas and battered sausage, chips and peas. The portion was just right and it was all lovely. Good price too

Fish and chips large and delicious. Steaming hot and delivered quickly with a cheery manner. We ate them sat by the stream. A real treat.

Exquisite fish and chips! Covid guidance not really adhered to, sign on the door saying only two people allowed inside and more came is as we were queuing and staff said nothing. Staff touch money and then without cleaning hands the utensils and wrap food. More guidance needed in this area but food was great! We thoroughly enjoyed them after walking ten miles.

Seems to shut in the evenings, so nearest chippy after this is 8 miles away. However if you manage to time it right the food is tasty even if the service was a little 'brusque'.

I cannot recommend this Fish & Chip Shop highly enough the Fish & Chips were cooked toPerfection the service was friendly and there is even a small area to eat inside at no extra cost the price was very reasonable for the quality of the food the portions were quite generous also the fish had no skin and the batter was delicious thin & crispy at this time of year it seems to only open for lunch but was open yesterday evening due to Castleton ancient Garland ceremony but it’s worth checking first a treat not to be missed if you’re in the area

This glorious chip shop is always open to suit the weekend visitor and is well worth a visit. When we get the opportunity to walk from Castleton it"s always a banker to treat ourselves afterwards.It's a small business- staff are hugely friendly - food consistently of the highest quality, particularly the fish which is far superior than many of the city outlets.Prices are quite reasonable also, so well worth a visit even if you don't feel the urge to walk.

Wow this little chip shop is to be highly recommend. The staff are so lovely and the fish n chips....well what can I say ...the best we have ever had. A little pricy but worth every penny. Look for the signs as a little out of the way. Please note only open lunchtimes

After many years of the elders blocking attempts to establish a chip shop in the village there was finally a success. It is the only chippy in the village, but they do not rely on their monopoly for custom but offer good food at fairly reasonable prices. (Only slightly more than a local "back home", but reasonable for being in a tourist hot-spot)!

For many years I have always fancied trying this Chippy when I have visited Castleton. I was going to see the Christmas Lights so I thought today’s the day. I arrived just after 3pm to find the shop busy. I queued up and ordered my Fish and Chips with a Sausage. Ben who served me was very friendly and helpful. When my food arrived I sat inside at the table and ate my meal. The Fish was cooked very fresh and was so flaky and soft melt in the mouth. A generous portion. The chips were cooked to perfection. The Sausage was very nice. I was nice and full after this great feed.

Delicious chips, fat and chubby, really tasty cooked to perfection. Sadly only open weekends but boy they're worth the wit. Definitely recommend this place

What great fish and chips. Had mine with mushy peas as a true northerner should. Light crispy batter around thick meaty white cod and good old fashioned chips. Ideal lunch on a crisp Derbyshire afternoon.

This tiny fish and chip shop is big in portions, the best fish and chips we have ever eaten. Read the reviews highly rated apart from a few idiots moaning about the opening times and not even tasting the food, good on the owner for responding to these people trying to tell him how to run his successful business. We've had many a trip to Castleton to visit Peveril Castle and Cave Dale but until a couple of weeks ago had never stopped in here.

We stopped off after a stroll round the town.The chip shop is down a street just off the towns market square. A great place to stop after a long treck and we found the food perfect.

We took a detour from our trip to visit. The drive through the Peak District to Castleton is one of the most interesting with sheep blocking our way!

Yup, Fantastic chips.....Golden brown, fluffy and hot with plenty of Salt and Vinegar on them. The place was very busy and the Fish looked lovely as well; next time we want more than a snack we will be back for Fish, Chips and peas (mushy of course).

There was nearly always a queue, which is a good sign. In fact we went there twice in the week we stayed in Castleton. Decent sized portions and the guy serving was friendly. What more do you need.

Doesn't seem to be open very often, but when it is it is very popular. At the moment open Sat + Sun 12-4. Had Scampi and chips. Really nice. Handy location off the village square. Worth a visit.

I would of loved to have tasted the fish and chips in castleton but with the opening hours being 12 till 2 mon to Thursday sat and sun 12 till 4 and not even open on the traditional fryday. By the time you finish your walk it is closed and you have to pay over a tenner in a pub if you can get a table . Hope one day they change the hours or give us a good reason why the hours are so short .

We had a tray of chips, it was nothing more and nothing less. They tasted nice, service was reasonably fast and we were happy. Always happy to see that chip shops are frying in vegetable oil so was nice to see a sign up to say this. The portion of chips was pretty small compared to what we are used to at home but the price did reflect this.

Been to castleton a number of times and this place is never open! managed to find it open finally and it wasn't exactly worth the wait. Just your average fish n chip shop, nothing special. Did the job but had much better.

Fantastic fish and chips served up today, chips just right and fish perfect. Enjoyed by me, my wife and two kids...well worth a visit.

It wasn't great. The shop was compact and there was very limited space to eat. The cleanliness wasn't the best, and neither was some of the food: I had ordered the chicken nuggets and chips - the chips were alright, however the nuggets tasted bland and tasted of nothing. The pie was reasonably good. The fish was brilliant, although slightly greasy. Overall, I would not return here, but I would like to recommend the fish and chips to anyone looking for a quick bite.

Love exploring here...then practically running up the hill to get our treat...tasty, reasonably priced andworth every single calorie!!! Something of an exception in Castleton, this chippy serves really good food at sensible prices. The fish portions were of good size, cooked in wonderful batter. The chips were the best we can remember buying. Recommended.

We visited this chippy today, having also visited it in the past. It's clean, the chips were great and in comparison to Manchester chip shops was extremely good value for money.
