Often stop here for lunch with the Motorcycle Group and I have to say they really are the Best Fish and Chips around. Well done Nick and Team. (Ponderosa Cowboys) Martin

The fish and chips are well worth the wait on a busy, sunny day. To be able to get your meal and sit on or by the beach is a wonderful thing to do. Such a British pastime. Everyone is friendly and you can have a chat whilst waiting, while those passing by tell you “they are worth waiting for”. On top of that they are opposite the ice cream shop (Cadwalladers) if you fancy desert. On a rainy day there is seating indoors. Definitely recommend.

We had fish & chips on Sunday evening and it was superb - the tastiest fish and delicious chips we have had for a long while. The staff were lovely, very friendly and helpful. We always come here when we are visiting the area and look forward to our next visit

Lovely sunny evening so decided to get f&c supper from this busy chippy near to Criccieth. Not that inspiring from the exterior, however the length of queue was a good sign. I had a smaller appetite portion, which was plenty big enough for me. Food all cooked to order. Both f&c were tasty & excellently cooked.

Perfect fish and chips by the sea which is what we were looking for. Excellent portions and inspire of a busy queue, it was well organised and efficient. Staff were lovely and it was great value for money.

The restaurant was just closing and they opened just for us. They were polite and welcoming to all of us 6 people. Aside from the wonderful hospitality the fish was fresh, piping hot, flakey, crispy and flavoursome. Not to mention the chips! They were slightly crispy well salted and the potato inside was from jersey royals, making it velvety smooth, and tasteful. And to top it all off, the sound of the crashing waves made for a beautiful setting. Thank you Castle Fish & Chips!

This is beyond doubt one of if not the best Chippy in the UK. It serves Gluten free food, taste full & delicious, as standard! Service is friendly, food could not be fresher, a place to meet other diners as they queue awaiting their order to be wrapped!! In all the years we, that is my wife, friends & myself, have been getting holiday meals at the Castle Chippy, locals & holiday makers order their food and patiently stand waiting for it to be freshly & expertly cooked. Please don't miss the highlight to your holiday,it is sooooo worth it!!

We ordered plaice and cod, no chips, there was far too much batter, hardly any fish; two hours later felt extremely ill, stomach pains and nauseous, had to take ginger tablets to ease the sickness. Really spoilt our holiday.

Often used this chippy whilst on holiday and always enjoyed our fish and chips. However , today’s experience let us down. We found the chips dry and tasteless and the batter oily. Kept repeating on us hours later.

It tells you all when you have to queue for up to an hour to get the best fish and chips in the UK!! You can watch it being freshly prepared as you wait but the pre ordering meas at least when you get to the front of the queue everything is going to be ready and freshly cooked.

Stopped off for fish and chips, place very busy but got through queue relatively quick, the fish was cooked to perfection, and the chips were good, didnt bother with any sauces as eating on one of the benches. I stop at a lit of chip shops in North Wales on travels and to be fair, the Cadtle Fish and Chips is consistent with its food. Staff were so busy but pleasant. Another dry day and we will be back

Passing through Criccieth last Sunday and fancied some food, true Brits my partner wanted fish and chips, we googled the best place in the area, Castle Fish & Chips came top so we chose to go here. Was quite disappointed on all accounts, arrived to find the que out the door (usually a good sign), we waited around 40 minutes, the staff were very subdued and a very flat atmosphere! Being a hypersensitive person I pick up on these things straight away & makes me feel quite uncomfortable, maybe pop the radio on low for some background music as it was so awkward in there! We eventually were served our food and went to sit on the wall looking at the sea (beautiful view) and was really disappointed with my food. I ordered fishcake and this was overcooked, too crispy on the outside I had to bite them bits off and pop them to one side. My partner said his fish and chips were just ok, shame as we waited so long for our order.

Staying for a few nights locally for the squeezes birthday and ventured here on the first night what with the long drive, rainy weather and not wanting to get all dressed up. Opted for simple Cod and 'large' chips (not large, a very 'normal' portion but was perfectly sized for us so glad didn't opt for the 'small' or 'standard' version), portion of beans (very small pot), fishcake and battered burger (yea, I know but just fancied one). Nice, lashings of salt and vinger :) but a bit pricey, £3.80 for chips alone! (menu on photos is old) but has a bit of a monopoly and was quite nice afterall. Nippy service, friendly and was busy for a Thursday.

Visited on a wet Friday lunchtime. The chippy wasn’t busy but it was well staffed and they were very friendly. The Cod and Haddock were freshly fried for us while we waited. The fish tasted fresh and the chips were nicely done. Not greasy. Good value too. Due to the weather, we ate in the small room at the back of the chippy. The back room is basic and there is no table service or cutlery, but it’s the ideal place to eat your food if it’s wet outside. No extra cost for using that facility either.

I have been holidaying in this area for over 14 years and always make a trip to our favourite fish and chip shop. Not once have me or any person with me been disappointed. The fish is cooked fresh and the batter is lovely and crisp. It's got to be the best chippy in North Wales. I was there on there opening day of the 2024 season, and I will go back again before the season is over. Excellent service and lovely friendly owners.

Ridiculous waits for bog standard fish and chips,as one man said,"the last time I stood outside after receiving my order there were dinasaurs outside"It would appear that holidaymakers are happy to stand outside for an hour in all weathers to get their fish and chips.

Called here on Saturday night, such a great fish and chip shop. Excellent service, friendly staff and the best fish and chips I’ve had in a while. And lovely mushy peas. We even went and sat in the diner to eat them.

Wow these were absolutely worth the wait! Long queue on arrival, but was very impressed that someone came out taking orders in the queue which meant by the time you got to the front all you had to do was pay and collect - and you can clearly see your order is totally fresh. Excellent system. Our entire party thought they were delicious, highly highly recommend paying a visit!

Absolutely delicious. 8 of us of varying ages from 10-84 enjoyed a variety of fish, pies, sausage, chicken and chips here during our week long stay in Cricceith. All good was cooked fresh. Highly recommend.

I did wonder why people were talking about long queuing times for this place and whether it was going to live up to the reviews but it was definitely worth the wait. There were already about 15 people in the queue when we arrived, 15mins before opening (at 5pm). The wait was long even after the door opened because the fish (and everything that isn’t chips) is cooked to order. So the fish was perfectly fried, and the chips were amazing and even the mushy peas were good. The staff were highly organised and very friendly. The whole experience was worth every minute and it was all very reasonably priced. Definitely recommend.

Best fish and chips I’ve had! Queue was quite long (at least half hour wait) but worth the wait. Then ate at the beach facing - perfect!

I’m not sure why the reviews for the fish and chips are so positive. Maybe they were having a bad day, but the fried fish, although very fresh, was far too oily and the oil was borderline rancid. That said, for some reason, unknown to me, the chips were quite good, but a bit soggy from being underneath the oily fish. I also ordered the stuffed jalapeños (jalapeño poppers in the US) and they were probably the best I ever had. I wish I could give a better review, but my stomach suffered for a few hours afterward, so 3 stars is really quite generous.

The Castle chippy sells all the expected items including 'specials' and the queue along the street outside is testament to the quality of the food.

Decided to join the queue and see what the hype was about, took 35 minutes to get served. Two cod a potion of chips and a curry sauce, everything tasted nice although the fish was a medium at best, enjoyed the curry sauce and the chips were pretty good.

Take away. Delicious cod & chips, curry sauce and plain jumbo sausage. Very good price. It was worth the wait as they took our order whilst we were in the Q and by the time we got to pay our food was ready.

Good value and fish was delicious. Cooked to order. Just watch out for opening hours as closes at 8pm some nights.

We qued 40 minutes just for a bag of chips, left in the end as we didn't have time to wait. Ques are ridiculous extremely slow. Numerous people walked out . Young teen on the counter not really knowing what to do.

Absolutely dire. Average quality food at best. Huge queues, insultingly slow service, extremely unpleasant behaviour from a couple of staff towards cusotmers. I'd avoid at all costs.

All freshly cooked. Staff were very nice. We are them in the room at the back as we didn't want the seagulls to swoop if we arte them in the town. The room was nice and clean, All very tasty, prices good, would go again

Recommendation from the holiday accommodation we were staying in and it didn’t disappoint. There is always a queue which speaks for itself. Great fish and chips, good service from staff.

Stopped here just before closing at lunch time and joined the queue. It was well worth the wait. The order was taken at the door by friendly young lady as there are only two customers allowed inside the shop at a time. The wait is because the fish is cooked freshly for each customer. Delicious crispy batter and lovely thick flakes of cod served with tasty not greasy chips. Highly recommended for quality and price.

Excellent Fish and Chips. Had to wait a little white but fish was very well cooked with light crispy batter and chips were great. Good conversation with servers while we waited and food was reasonably priced. Would recommend giving it a try.

You will have to queue, but most definitely worth the wait. Tastiest, crispiest batter. Just be aware, price of food is reasonable but you get charged extra per fork and for a paper bag.

Fab chippy, the real deal. Just stopped for chips as are allowed to move more due to local restrictions in Wales being lifted. Always wanted to try it but never passed at the right time... until now. Friendly and welcoming, came outside to take our order in advance. The chips and potato scallops were amazing!

Visited today , went on reviews on Tripadvisor, it was excellent. Covid rules strictly in place, fish was really really good, crispy crunchy batter, big flakey white fish, delicious. Chips tasty, hot and plentiful. And the best bit- absolutely no grease. Reasonably priced, recommend.

After reading all the marvelous reviews we decided to give it a try as we were staying over the road. We ordered 3 sausage and chips, one child's portion. Food was great but we seemed to all receive a child's portion of chips. Wouldn't return due to small portions but like I said in the title maybe this was a mistake?

Really good food and prices, however the wait was very long - 30mins for two small trays of chips, they only serve the first few members of the queue at a time no matter the size of the orders. Definitely worth going but be prepared for a long wait.

During our stay in Criccieth we had seen many visitors to the town sitting along the promenade with fish and chips in lap, wondering where they had been - the smell was divine. So we checked it out and discovered that Castle Fish & Chips was the place to visit and off we duly went. The queue was unexpected! Prepare to wait for 20-30 minutes. But, it is well worth the wait. Beautifully fresh fish, delicious chips, a classic done super well with friendly staff working very hard to deliver. As the saying goes, all good things...

Cod and chips well worth the short wait in a socially distanced line along Castle Street. Cooked well, great quality, friendly service. Perfect way to end the day.

Popped in today as we were looking for some where to have something to eat. Read the reviews and were not disappointed. The batter on the fish was crispy and was not over greasy. The fish its self was lovely and flaky. The chips where beautifully cooked and the portions were perfect. Along side that I had a pot of curry sauce and my wife had some beans. Both were of great quality. Highly recommend this Fish and Chip shop and will definitely come again.

We always thought The Mermaid at Barmouth was the best North Wales chippy. Not anymore Castle chippy rules. The fish is cooked to order and never disappoints. They are also very Covid safe.

Last time I went in here one of the staff was sucking on their thumb before handling food. Never again.

Best fish and chips I’ve ever had: been consistently coming to Castle Chippy for years and never had a bad experience. There’s a bit of a queue normally but it’s worth the wait, the batter on the fish is so fresh and light and the chips are amazing, not all stogy and weird the way you get in some chippys! The family team who run it are really friendly too!

Been a regular visitor to this family run business over a number of years for their quality fish and chips . Always worth the wait for the freshest produce. Sensible portions , crisp and non greasy ,eat them on the beach or the esplanade along with the majestic views of the coastline an experience not to be missed! Forgot to say very sensible system for dealing with Covid ,well organised with sensible distancing . Here’s to the next visit .

We got there 20 mins before opening at were second in the queue! We have been plenty of times so we know about the wait -however it was very organised post lock down - the lady takes the orders outside and you go in one at a time. As always the fish and chips were heaven! Portion size excellent, perfectly crispy light batter and scrumptious salty chips all devoured with a beautiful view in front of us. What more could you want on a summers Sunday evening?! Highly recommended....get there early!

GLUTEN FREE FISH AND CHIPS The Castle Fish & Chip shop in Porthmadog, Wales They have a separate fryer for chips so they are completely gluten free with no risk of cross contamination and they did me a steamed fish! I’m guessing they didn’t do gluten free batter, but it was still delicious! ❤️ The mushy peas were gluten free too If you’re unsure just ring ahead to assure yourself they are coeliac safe, I’m coeliac and had no reactions whatsoever so they must be super careful !

Just stopped here for take away fish and chips and not disappointed. Everything cooked fresh and was delicious. Very ‘covid aware’ with organised order and queuing system. Pleasant staff too. They have a captive audience being right by the castle and beach but that doesn’t stop them providing first class food and service. Will be back when I’m next in Criccieth.

We visited here last week on our holiday to Wales. We were served and greeted by lovely staff who were about to close after there lunch shift (we didn’t realise at the time) but our order was no problem for them. They cooked our fish and chips fresh and our sons meal too. They made us feel very welcome as they spoke to us whilst our food was cooking. Our fish was lovely and the batter was light. Would definitely recommend and will visit again in the future. We managed our climb up snowdon the next day

Excellent food all cooked fresh to order. Served by lovely people/owners who were friendly and efficient in their service. The food was good value for the price. The place looked very clean and hygiene standards appeared very good. Highly recommend if you are visiting the area. Thank you for a delicious meal.

Cracking fish and chips. Social distancing and the queue were managed well. The chips were good and the fish was lovely and coated in a very light and crispy batter. All freshly cooked and very much enjoyed by all of us.

I am very concerned that the vegetable oil is not changed every day.As the owner says it is"cleaned and filtered".The very act of heating the oil changes the composition and there is a strong consensus of opinion that it releases carcinogenic products after regular heating.

We went there last August and were very disappointed as were some other customers.All started out promisingly, I turned up, gave my order saying I wanted newly fried fish, which they duely started to cook... Whilst I was waiting the chap frying the fish started talking to another member of staff about a friend of his who ran another fish and chip shop; saying how pedantic he was because he changed his oil and cleaned out the friers and filters everyday. To which the other staff member replied 'He does that everyday what we do at the end of the season?'I should have left at this point, but I assumed she must have been referring to the cleaning of the filters and not the oil.When we tried to eat our fish, the fish itself was good quality but was completely spoilt by the old rancid taste of the oil. It was disgusting and not only confined to the fish but the chips as well. On top of that when I tried to eat the fish, loads of oil oozed out of the fish, through the paper wrap and all over my jeans. Probably at least half a teacup of oil if not more.We threw most of our meal away as it was just too revolting. I went back to complain but they had closed, which was odd as it was only 8:30pm.Walking back to our car on the sea front I noticed another couple, who had ordered fish and chips from the same place, chucking out half eaten portions muttering how oily and unpleasant it was.We will obviously never go back, nor should you.

Decided to try castle fish and chips in Criccieth after reading reviews. It has been a long time since I’ve had fish and chips this good, brought back memories. The fish was sweet, the batter light, and the chips soft inside and not soggy. Lovely people serving us, we decided to eat in and rest after a walk .

Went here on a pouring down day and what a pick my up. Lovely fish and chips and mushy peas my husband could not stop praising them and he is fussy about his fish suppers.

There is nothing better than eating fish and chips from a tray, sat on a bench taking in the magnificent views over the bay. The fish was cooked perfectly and the chips hot and fresh - delicious!

Been going here for years and never been disappointed. There is a small seating area at the back of the premises - just 5 tables of 4. We always have the Castle Special which is great value and as noted by others, the food is excellent.

Went today as on holiday following reviews on here and a recommendation. We had take away fish and chips, they only do one size which isn't a huge issue but the take away portion sizes for all six meals were so small and nothing like the photos I've seen on here. The fish was ok but the chips were soggy and the portion size hardly filled the polystyrene container. I was really looking forward to this but sadly this did not live up to expectations. I can only assume we were unlucky, an expensive unlucky and wouldn't go here again or recommend it.

Went in with an order for 8 of us which was no problem, and service was very quick. The food was all cooked fresh - chips were delicious and the fish batter was crisp but not too thick. We were staying close by to the takeaway and saw people every day enjoying fish and chips by the beach, so it is obviously popular with locals and visitors.

We have just had a week's self catering holiday in Criccieth. As we didn't fancy cooking on the first night we had fish and chips from Castle Fish and Chips. They were excellent.and everything was perfectly cooked. Even the rather fussy foodie among us was impressed!

Gets very busy and you can see why. Fish and my fish cake freshly cooked. Chips portions about right for one person. Good value

We come to just outside Criccieth every year and our holiday would not be the same without fish & chips from The Castle. It is the best by far, the fish has the thinnest , crispiest batter and the chips are really nice and never oily or soggy. It is well worth quequeing for, a queque of customers who are prepared to wait tells o you a lot about the quality of the food.

Was told that this was the best fish and chips to be had so went there to find that there was around 20 people queuing up in a tiny little shop. So stood in a hot chip shop waiting to order which took an age!!! so was looking forward to the best fish and chips i have ever had. This was not the case at all. The fish batter was soggy, the chips had no taste to them, could have cooked better in my oven!! They don't take card, cash only so be prepared to take cash with you or you will have to walk to the nearest cash machine which is a 10 minute walk away making it 20 minutes there and back and on your return you will be back to 20th in the queue. Be prepared that if people have pre-ordered their food, they will arrive and be served before you making your wait even longer!!!! Definitely not worth the wait or the money spent. There are other chips shops in the town such as Paddy's Plaice which unfortunately, we did not have time to visit but will do on my next visit.

just the place to have fish and chips beside the sea, but watch out for the gulls. food was both excerlent and great value for money not many places you can get two meals for well under a tenner.
