Casa Carlos Cafe in Bournemouth

Wow! We popped in for a light lunch and ended up having a feast and having to take a doggy bag home (no way was I leaving anything). Delicious tapas (spicy chorizo, hummus) and the best paella! Portions are huge - if you are eating other tapas, a single paella is plenty for 3-4. Excellent house wine too. We will be back - often!

Food was swimming in oil and Paella was substandard DEFINITELY not as the Spanish cook it …lacking some basic ingredients and not cooked with socarrat base as would be done in Spain. Tapas food very small and overpriced and a 10 % service charge was ridiculous considering the “ service “ . Sorry but we will not return here.

Chef Carlos and steam looked after us really well even when it turned out that our table booking was with another restaurant. The food was sterling, came quickly and the Sangria just added to the ambience. The bread was super fresh and light, the whitebait crunchy and tasty and the cheese and ham board top notch.

The best tapas I’ve ever had. Friendly staff, great atmosphere and service and excellent food that transported me to Spain!

Read other reviews and wasn’t sure whether to go or not! Very happy we did. Great late afternoon paella and vino. Won’t say more, just go see for yourself!

You may have to remortgage your house to eat here but the food is good. £25 for a jug of sangria! Food is good at £5 per mouthful, and the owner, Billy Batts seems a stand up guy! Certainly has a smile that says‚‘i saw you coming‘! £25 service charge on top of our huge initial bill! However, like I said, tbf food is tasty so well done on that score!

We had a table outside on a warm summer evening, nice atmosphere. Menu has Tapas on one side and Paellas on reverse. So we ordered 2xTapas (1x Sardines and 1x Prawns) and 2 Paellas. I think not unreasonably we expected Tapas first then Paellas. Paellas turned up first, we sent them back. They said “ Oh we always send everything at same time” and seemed unprepared to compromise. (Strange attitude towards customers!) Well I didnt want that as obviously whichever food we dont eat first we will end up eating cold. When Paellas arrived again 20mins later one was dried out a bit where it had been kept hot, other was freshly served. Paellas a bit bland, asked for hot sauce, didnt have any. House red at £26 was pricey but ok. Then the bill. £107 including 10% service charge! Which I initially said I did not want to pay, but my partner didnt want conflict so I paid in full. Wont be back! Bar 1 the staff were all pleasant and nice. Just this strange unhelpful attitude towards customers. And with 10% added its a rip off!

Quickly visit in the evening just before dinner time. Very nice 👍🏻 interior and cosy feeling. Warm welcome and quick service. We had no reservation but they managed to accommodate us. Had two taps: olives and Serrano ham croquettes. Really testy 👌🏻 We will definitely come back to try a main course. Overall ok 👍🏻 little place.

Carlos is rude - he does not like people who speak English; well we are in England! My son, who also speaks English, makes a better paella than Carlos. I live locally and have popped into Carlos for over three years to get bread, olives, crisps, pastries. Today (6.9.23) he was very rude, because I speak English (I am not English, Carlos), and English people can't wait! Don't go.

We've been trying to get a table at Chef Carlos for about 18 months now, but they take no bookings and it's always full. But last night, a Wednesday night just before schools break up we thought we might stand a chance. There were people sitting outside, the doors were open, but my wife and I noticed chairs on tables inside. The owner, Chef Carlos himself presumably, was standing outside talking to people at a table. We enquired if he was open yet, as it was still very early in the evening. 'Closed,' he said dismissively. And that was it. Then, 'Open tomorrow,' and turned his back on us. Three miserable words in total. I would have expected, 'I'm awfully sorry, we're closed tonight, but you're more than welcome tomorrow. Can I book a table for you?' But no, not this miserable sod who has absolutely no idea how to treat potential clientele couldn't even be bothered to be courteous. Do I have a right to write a review when I've never eaten there? I'd say so. People should realise how ignorant this miserable sod is, and what to expect if they actually manage to get a table. I certainly shan't be returning. And I notice I'm not the only person to find him abrasive and cutting. If he cares precious little for potential clients then he clearly doesn't care for the food he serves them or how he cooks it. If it's too much effort to be courteous to people, I suspect its too much effort to cook properly and hygienically

Visited with friends recommended by one of the party. There is no table bookings taken, first come first served. We arrived on a Friday evening about 7:30 and were shown straight to a table for 5. A very nice guy told us how to order, by ticking items for order, then they take away ordering slips. Food is served quickly & we started with 5-6 starters(chicken/chorizo, tortilla, mushrooms, patatas bravas, garlic prawns) and then ordered more to suit (paella, meatballs, calamares & sardines) All of the food was exceptional & service was excellent. Cost was very reasonable as well. Fantastic meal will definitely go back again.

Casa Carlos is located in the Southbourne area of Bournemouth. It is just under half a mile on foot from Pokesdown station. It opens at 6 pm on a Saturday evening and we were the first customers through the door. It was lucky that we were as it rapidly filled with locals (you cannot book in advance). We had patatas bravas, garlic mushrooms and chicken & chorizo paella with Spanish beer to drink. All were good, especially the paella which contained delicious pieces of chorizo. We had Bailey’s latte after our meal and the service was good too.

My husband's 50th birthday meal. Amazing paella and sangria, we ordered too much food so they supplied us with take away boxes!! Great service would highly recommend.

Ate here on a Friday evening. Walk ins only, restaurant was busy. Staff were very helpful and friendly. Food very good. Manchego and serrano is recommended.

A very good evening. Love the renovation which has increased the space dramatically. Food as great as ever with substantial tapas dishes. Like the no need to book however restaurant full early. Tables turned quickly. We had 5 x tapas and couple of glasses of house wine. All great. Service very good.

Wonderful tasty food, especially the calamari and the meatballs. Friendly staff and very reasonably priced. Very popular so you may need to queue but worth waiting for. The tortilla portion is really only big enough for 1 person.

Always superb, love the spicy Garlic flavour chicken & rice Paella, Lovely wine and beer and fantastic staff . If you appreciate authentic Spanish food and atmosphere this is the place to go.

Went here for my neice's birthday. She was really looking forward to it - 7 of her family there. Lots of table inside and out - tables of 4. Some people kindly moved up so we could have 2 tables together without moving any tables/chairs around. The waitress for no reason shouted very rudely at my niece who was inside the restaurant letting them know she was there - "7 is too many, we can't serve 7. what are you doing, go away" then Carlos, the owner joined in rudely shouting at her "why don't you listen? what don't you understand?" The whole time my niece said nothing other than we wanted to eat at the restaurant and did not argue back and was very upset by this. Then the waitress went outside where my wife was and shouted at her "what don't you understand?" She said nothing back. I then arrived after parking the car to hear very loud shouting inside which was my niece's husband telling Carlos to apologise for being so rude and Carlos and the waitress shouting at him at the top of their voices. Everyone inside and outside was amazed at their rudeness. Carlos may be a good chef, but is not a business man and seriously lacks customer skills and obviously his staff are the same, uncrontrolled rude people. They will not last long there. If they can't handle that many customers, maybe remove some of the tables and don't open earlier than advertised! We have never seen or even heard of anything like it in our lives. None of our family will ever go there again.

Brilliant evening at Casa Carlos. We sat and ate and drank and chatted and it was perfect. There were four of us and we all have different favourite dishes but mine had to be the chicken and chorizo paella! The team that work there are brilliant and that’s obvious by the constant stream of customers arriving! We live just down the road and will be back repeatedly! Thank you!

We had poor experience here with v rude front of house guy. We’ve lived in Spain and love the Spanish so pretty shocked. When we ate here last, the food was mediocre. May the people who love it continue to enjoy but not for us

.....If you like rudeness and discourteous behaviour from the chef - owner. The start of the service problem here was that all customers have to fill in an order slip. I may be naive about this but I prefer the waiting staff to take the order so that they have an overview of the whole table’s requirements and convey these to the kitchen. As it turned out on this visit in a large ish party the order slip was passed around and despite a suggestion to the waiter that it might be more effective if he simply took our order, we were told to continue to do it ourselves. Inevitably the paper form, about the size of a long bus ticket, was a bit messy after 7 people had attempted to tick the various boxes complete with amendments and corrections. When handed to the waiter, I was then asked to decipher it and tell him what the order was. How was I supposed to know ? Everyone had filled in their orders separately. The waiter persisted with this strategy and completed another slip himself as he shouted questions around the table in a rather stressed manner. Hardly conducive to a relaxed and enjoyable start to the evening. The shouting then continues as amidst our conversations the waiter returns with the food and starts to simply yell the name of the dish and try to place it somewhere near the appropriate diner. Some dishes were missing but he was not interested. At least one dish was not on our order, but when this was pointed out he dumped it in the middle of the table with a grunt anyway. Although the food is undeniably good this situation inevitably resulted in an inaccurate bill which did not include any details of the food eaten. The bill was literally thrown onto the table in a rude and dismissive manner. When I asked about that I was told that is the way it is done in Spain. I have travelled in Spain and have never been treated in such a rude manner. A little true Spanish hospitality and welcome would go a long way at this restaurant which is currently blighted by the rudeness of the chef which ruins the atmosphere of the establishment.

Excellent meal as usual. Carlos and Erica always welcoming and food as usual delicious. Salt cod croquettes and calamari superb. Everything fresh and cooked to order. New restaurant layout makes the place feel more spacious and comfortable Thanks again and see you again soon

Fantástico en general. La comida es increíble, fácilmente las mejores tapas de la zona. Carlos es extremadamente agradable y encantador, siempre nos prepara comida que no está en el menú. Nos hace sentir muy bienvenidos, por eso seguimos volviendo.Buen vino, buena comida, panza feliz.No puedo creer que las críticas critiquen este lugar, apuesto a que estás destripado La Tasca cerró. No escuches, si alguna vez has estado en España y te gustan las tapas, pruébalo.

But that's as much as we got at Casa Carlos on Friday evening. I had heard mixed reviews about this place but was prepared to give it a go with friends who had already been.Our evening started off well with the most amazing mulled wine at The Larderhouse... And then we wandered over to Casa Carlos at about 8.45pm - you can't book a table, otherwise we would have done - and there were several empty tables - but when we told the waitress we'd like a table for 3, she checked with the chef and we were told "No more food" and that was it - rudely turned away. It was a Friday evening and it wasn't that late! I guess they'd decided they'd had enough for one night. We won't be returning - in fact, they did us a favour - we tried the Moroccan restaurant next door but one - Makla Bistro - where the staff were friendly and welcoming and the food was delicious and great value for money. So, next time you're in Southbourne walk straight past Casa Carlos and into Makla Bistro!!!

Had a lovely family meal, decent portions that we were able take away with us when we couldn't finish. The Paella is awesome.

Me sorprendió un poco leer algunas de las críticas aquí y podría haberme desanimado, pero nos encontramos con mi hijo y mi nuera allí y sabíamos que no usarían el restaurante si algunas de las críticas fueran ciertas. Carlos nos recibió calurosamente, había agua del grifo, tanto como quisieras, la comida era deliciosa y el servicio excelente. Pasamos una noche muy agradable y volveremos.

¡NO VISITA AQUÍ! ! ! La comida es muy pobre, el vino ya tiene el corcho ya fuera del barril. Quieren cobrar por el agua y no suministrar agua del grifo. Nos apuraron porque querían nuestra mesa y el propietario Carlos es el hombre más grosero con el que nos hemos encontrado, ¡cómo tiene un negocio es un milagro! ! Lo recomiendo encarecidamente, así que ve a otro lado! !

Myself and my wife went the other evening, we ordered a bottle of wine first,(not the house) ,they came with the cork all ready out , sitting on top of the bottle. We tried a sip and it tasted very weak ( like it was watered down ) . We sent it back and got water instead. The Tapas was on our table about 3 mins after we ordered, very poor quality except for the Patatas Bravas , which arrived a little later on. We were in and out in about 35 mins, very quick and rushed. Will not go back again.

A tapas bar is not what one thinks of when looking for peace and quiet but quite why it was necessary for the chef to bellow so much and so loudly at his staff I have no idea. It appeared to be aggressive and from their apparent lack of distress I assume it's standard practice. Not good, so not good I'll not go back It's unnecessary.

We had a table on a busy Friday evening, and whilst it can be a bit of chore trying to book (they only have a mobile number and this is often switched off!), the food is very good. You are given a list of dishes and a pen, and you tick off what you want. (Generally advisable to share a Paella dish and then choose 2 or 3 tapas dishes).

Food is tasty but unfortunately small portion compared to the cost contrary to our last visit few months ago. The waiter ( middle aged man working on monday night) was very off hand almost to the point of being rude. Will give great consideration before visiting this restaurant again.

We've just been for dinner. The food was delicious BUT the service was very rushed. We asked for tap water only to be told that we couldn't have tap water as it was not drinkable.

Had seafood paella, olives, bread, lamb chops special followed by strawberry cake for dessert.

Visitamos temprano el lunes por la noche y el lugar estaba casi lleno a las siete, así que obviamente es un verdadero favorito para la gente local. La comida era excelente con grandes porciones de tapas y paella. Los mariscos son particularmente buenos. El vino de la casa era barato pero muy bueno. La comida se cocina en el restaurante principal, por lo que los olores son exquisitos. Los camareros son amables y eficientes.

It was absolutely full on a Wednesday night, with people waiting for tables. Service was excellent, efficient and friendly. Food was in huge portions but largely disappointing. Would have preferred smaller tapas portions but better quality. There’s only so much fried calamari you can eat and the sauce for the mussels was basically just cream and very sickly. The roasted vegetables were good, but, like everything else, swimming in vast amounts of oil. Less oil and more flavour would have been a good rule of thumb for most dishes. The frittata was just rubbery egg and potato with no flavour at all. The chorizo and chicken was just that -no herbs, spices or flavours other than the oil from the chorizo. Altogether disappointing food, but great atmosphere and service made up for it.

Contrary to some of the reviews on here, we had a fantastic time! There were 5 of us and we booked a table for a Thursday evening. As soon as we walked in we loved the typical Spanish feel and were very pleased to find the staff were mainly Spanish too. My husband and I ordered a selection of tapas and the rest of the party had paella. The Paellas were very large and my niece was unable go finish hers but they were happy to let her take it home in a takeaway container. My husband is half Spanish and we have spent a lot of time in Spain eating tapas and can be quite critical if we feel the dishes don't make the mark but we were very impressed with the tapas we had at Casa Carlos. You can't beat tapas eaten in a traditional bar in Spain but it was a very good second. As we stepped out into the sunshine after enjoying some lovely Spanish food in a very authentic setting we really felt like we had been in Spain. We can't wait to return

Visitamos este restaurante anoche y nos decepcionó mucho en general, estaba bastante ocupado cuando llegamos nos mostraron nuestra mesa y los menús llegaron rápidamente el camarero parecía agradable y era muy acogedor el restaurante en sí tenía un tema típicamente español, así que nos alegramos Tenía una botella de rojo de la casa y era un vino muy aceptable y bebible, y pedimos nuestros platos que solo podían haber sido de 3 minutos cuando todos menos uno de nuestros platos llegaron demasiado pronto para estar recién cocidos, así que me sorprendió mucho. Llegaron nuestros camarones. unos 15 minutos más tarde, la comida fue muy decepcionante y muy poco sabrosa, nos encantan las tapas y esperábamos haber encontrado otro que pudiéramos visitar cuando nos apetezca, pero lamentablemente no volveremos.

Comí allí esta noche y la comida era fantástica. las raciones eran tan grandes que pedimos una bolsa de perrito y se dieron por vencidos. La paella de marisco y pollo era fabulosa y enorme. Mi esposa tenía cuatro tapas y otra vez, muy agradable.

Had a great meal and overall experience at this great spanish restaurant. Delicious Paella and a great selection of dishes. Seating in the basement is really cosy!

We were a group of 11 and whilst deciding to go with the "party menu" or order some paella and the tapas we wanted, we were abruptly and rudely told by the owner that we had no choice but to go with the party menu as he couldn't possibly cook for 11 people ordering food. Odd considering the style of food we are talking about. So, party menu it is. First dishes are; a tomato, red onion and pepper salad and some dry store bought bread. This was followed by a mountain of garlic bread. Both distinctly average at best. Next we were given; chicken and chorizo (dry), meatballs, muscles and patatas bravas. Each of these had EXACTLY the same average sauce smothered on top. We were also given ONE plate of croquettes (very average), even though we were clear about wanting a lot of these. ONE plate of bland, rubbery and probably frozen calamari, served with a garlic mayonnaise (not even aioli) and some fried chorizo. We also had some embarrassingly overcooked courgette and aubergine and one plate of vegetarian paella (so overcooked the rice was almost mush). The only remotely tasty thing in our tapas "selection" was some slices of jamon and manchego (though these had definitely come out of a packet). To add insult to injury we were charged £28 per person and between 11 people we had 5 jugs of awful sangria, one bottle of terrible house wine and the tapas selection. Meaning the sangria and wine must have averaged at about £20 each.

the food is not bad and the staff generally friendly ,,,but . The owner is very arrogant and you will not get an itemised bill to check what you have been charged for against what you actually had ! !!! you have to fill out your own order form , rather than the staff taking your order 1 person at a time , so when the food arrives the waiter does not know who the food is for . Not my greatest dining experience!!!

Crowded, bustling, manic with a vibrancy not normally associated with Southbourne. That's Casa Carlos.

This was our second visit to this restaurant. As you cannot book we arrived at 6.15 on Saturday evening as we new it was popular. The place was packed upstairs and down but we were quickly given a table which was set for 4. We ordered our food which came quickly....We had just started to eat when the waiter asked us to move to the next table as he wanted to sit another 3 people. We moved as we didn't want to cause a fuss. The whole atmosphere was manic! It was impossible to enjoy the meal as the waiters are constantly rushing around. We finished our meal and requested the bill. The waitress brought the bill to the table and asked us to leave as they were very busy and the table was booked. We felt really insulted as she might as well have told us to hurry up and get out! We complained to Carlos's Son, who didn't comment and told the receptionist she was rude and that we'd never go back. There was no apology. There's no way all those people arriving no stop were chance customers. If you like fast food with rude service this is the place to go!!

6 of us ordered a wide selection of tapas from the list they provide. The food as all delicious, wine, beer, all good. Very much felt like being back in Spain with a great atmosphere.

A family supper with locals; who recommended a fairly new Tapas bar.

We really enjoyed the evening which was about our 6th or 7th visit this year. The draught beer and house wine are excellent. We have learned not to over order as the helpings are generous. This time we combined paella to share alongside several seafood tapas which worked really well.

We were the second table of the night, and were the last people to get our food once the place was full, we waited over an hour for our order to be collected (you have to fill out a form to order).

Restaurante acogedor con buena comida y un gran ambiente. No puede reservar mesa, simplemente subir, por lo que es una buena idea ir temprano. Las mesas están bien empaquetadas y es posible que tengas que compartirlas. La comida llega muy rápido, por lo que las personas entran y salen bastante rápido, así que si vienes cuando está lleno, no tienes que esperar mucho. El menú es Tapas o Paella con una pequeña selección de platos principales, principalmente pescado. Esperé con ansias mi visita a Cassa Carlos durante toda la semana, ya que vivo en la comunidad de Southbourne y mi Paella en la calle 1 en algunos años. El ambiente era muy agradable, de ahí mis 3 estrellas, pero cuando mi Paella apareció en mi mesa, el ambiente pronto se olvidó, ya que aparentemente pagué 12. 99 o algo parecido a esa cifra para un plato de arroz (recocido) y, aparte de una o dos gambas grandes y unas pocas más pequeñas, fue mi opción de paella SEAFOOD. ¿Qué no hay mejillones? ¿Pulpo o calamar o alguna otra criatura marina que se deleita? muy, muy pobre y! Cuando me quejé cortésmente después de haber pagado la factura, me preguntaste groseramente por tu amiga poco amistosa en la caja "si era chef" Obviamente dije que no y recibí un "ahí tienes que ir" no vayas a Cassa Carlos por una gente de Paella

Descubrimos esta pequeña joya hace unos meses y regresamos anoche. Una visita a este restaurante atmosférico lo llevará a los mejores restaurantes de la calle secundaria de España. Es una empresa familiar y el personal es encantador.

Comimos en este restaurante el sábado pasado y la paella de mariscos fue la peor que he comido, sobre arroz cocido y una cantidad muy limitada de mariscos con poca variedad. La señora de la recepción también fue grosera y pregunta si éramos chefs cuando le dijimos que no estábamos contentos con la paella que nos había dicho que era maravilloso.

We come here at least once a month. The atmosphere is great - simple long tables and always full of customers. Great service. Exceptional tapas - we're lucky to have Casa Carlos on our door step.

Went for a meal with a couple of friends whilst staying in Southbourne. Food was excellent as was the service . Very friendly staff made it a thoroughly enjoyable evening.

Good food and plenty of it, the Tapas is excellent either on its own or as a starter, the Paella was very filling with lovely fresh fish extra and the house wine was very nice and good value.

Staff all ok except one male waiter who is extremely rude, attitude bordering on abusive and gives you the attitude that it's all about him. I believe he is the manager or owner.

Took me three visits to actually find the place open !! Food is reasonable but service poor ... Because it is trendy people put up with it ... You are being taken for a ride .. just seen is closed all of August so they can do festivals ... Arrogance!!!

Went here with my wife on thursday19th July. Service was good, food was excellent, really enjoyable HOWEVER if you are going to offer customers trestle tables, and no airconditioning, that’s fine but you cannot charge top end prices for simple tapas dishes. We had four tapas dishes and a dessert, two beers and the bill was £48!!! Compare this with similar tapas in Estapona two weeks earlier for 4 people, for £36. This place is overpriced, no matter how tasty the food is. Enjoy but manage your expectations, and be prepared to sit shoulder to shoulder with other customers, in a sweaty environment when it’s hot.

I booked a table for 7 on 27th of July to celebrate my Birthday. Carlos confirmed that it was open and we could be accommodated. Tried to confirm all was OK just 2 hours before the booking but they don't answer the phone. I send him a text to confirmed the time of the booking but I never had a reply . We turned up to find that the restaurant was closed as he run out of food. When I was taking the balloons and the cake out from the car, my auntie went to the entrance and Carlos was at the door and told my auntie that the place was closed , she said that it should have been a mistake as we booked a table for a Birthday celebration . He was extremely rude and said that he was the owner and the place was closed as they have ran out of food. No apology.

I love coming here for seafood paella- generous portion and oh do tasty. The decor is rustic and charming and the service great. Best Spanish tapas place I have been to by far. I come here for a mini holiday to Spain- even if just for a couple of hours. Very recommended.

We had a table for six downstairs and the whole experience was great. The tapas was fresh and very tasty and good value. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Best tapas in Southbourne. The mussels were delicious.

Esta es una joya en high Street southbourne! Proporcionar puedes conseguir una mesa, creo que va a a seguir llenando! La comida es muy sabrosa, auténtica y caliente! Cada uno de los platos que hemos probado (y teníamos un montón) era absolutamente de primera categoría! Sangría verdaderamente delicioso. El personal es muy amable y si Carlos es un poco gruñón - cocina - me gusta eso que le fuera!

Fourth or fifth time we've been now and it just keeps on getting better. We like the randomness of it (you can't book so it's always pot luck) but we've always managed to get a table.

Excellent mouth watering authentic cuisine in a communal setting with an atmosphere that just buzzed. The beer was excellent too! Large portions and moderately priced too.

Leí las críticas en tripadvisor totalmente esperado gran comida, pero no era tan seguro en el servicio o el propietario. No tenía de qué preocuparme. El lugar estaba lleno y nos llevaron abajo a nuestra mesa. Había un rumor muy agradable el lugar, así que nos sentimos más que satisfechos. No estoy seguro de si Carlos había sido leer cualquiera de los comentarios pero había mucho personal y sin duda no hay mal ambiente de él o su personal. Tuvimos un gran servicio, amable y agradable, y la comida era espléndida. Recomiendo encarecidamente una visita y, como la mayoría de las cosas que elegimos en el menú, y eran todos muy buenos, nada que usted elija debe ser bueno. Sin duda volveremos. Buena cerveza.

Group of 15 friends shared the party platter!!! Amazing atmosphere, food brilliant and really could not fault anything. Carlos is a great character made us all feel so welcome. Can’t wait to go again!!!!
