My cousin and I actually had tea and cake one afternoon and then lunch two days later. Both were great experiences. The staff were friendly and cheerful, the chocolate cake and fruit cake sublime and the tea, made with leaves, not teabags, in a bone china pot and drunk from beautiful bone china cups was wonderful. It's all very Miss Marple inside, like going back to a gentler time and it's a not to be missed experience. The background music is perfect for the ambience, Jack Jones crooning away.....both our visits were most enjoyable and when I return to beautiful Shropshire in December my partner and I will definitely visit, it would be rude not to!!! Thank you Carvells for a step back in time!

Lovely tea shop with great character. Loved the old building, vintage tea sets and mismatched furniture. The staff were very friendly and very efficient. We enjoyed the food, fairly straightforward but very enjoyable. It doesn’t look like much from the outside but is lovely inside.

Staff were all friendly and attentive, the young woman taking our order was thorough and professional. Three of us dining - Two pasties and salad, plus one sausage roll and salad was lunch, food absolutely delicious, service not slow despite a lot of people dining at that time. Gorgeous collection of China teacups and saucers. Premises clean, couldn’t fault it.

One of the best tea rooms I’ve visited! There’s lots of space on the first floor and the place has a real olde worlde charm. It was warm and cosy inside on a cold January day, and there were many attentive and friendly staff. The coffee was delicious and the cheese scone was without doubt the best I’ve ever had - very cheesy, very light (none of that ‘clagginess’ you can get with some scones) and lovely and warm - the butter just melted into it - a foodie’s dream!! It came with a small but adequate garnish of fresh salad. My friend had the butter croissant with delicious jam and a pot of tea - real tea with a strainer. The prices were extremely reasonable and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this place and will definitely visit again if I return to Ludlow for another holiday.

A ramshackle place or full of quirky atmosphere depending on your perspective. The tea was ok but our food never came. When we asked after 40 minutes if there was any news on the soup we were told “dunno, I haven’t got an order for soups”. Despite the server then putting her hand straight onto the order chit. No apology, awful. So i can’t comment on the food as I never got any. We went over the road to Greggs!

We only went to this place for afternoon tea because our usual place was fully booked. This place is rather filthy where our table had really dirty tablecloth, and there were cobwebs everywhere that made it unappetizing to eat there. The sandwiches were fine, but the scones were dry and were served with poor quality cheap jam (or more like jelly really), while the cakes were also dry and too sweet. We were seated upstairs in one of the small rooms, and it was difficult get the attention of the staff, which didn't bother to check if we the teapots needed refilling.

I am absolutely baffled by the bad reviews, this place was one of the highlights of our holiday in beautiful Ludlow. My husband and I came for lunch, most tasty and reasonably priced, lovely friendly staff and very clean. I had a cream tea, a delicious large warm scone, choice of plain or fruited, yummy cream and jam and a delicious cuppa. My husband said his cheese crumpets were superb. The restaurant is super quaint and quirky with mismatched vintage china, every teapot was different. It is divided into different "living rooms'" we were spoilt for choice , they all looked lovely. Yes the service can be slow, but why on earth are you rushing in relaxing Ludlow?! This is a family-run restaurant and the lovely young women were up and down steep steps with heavily-laden trays, if you think they have forgotten you, just nab one, they are very obliging! I am guessing the less than favourable reviews are written by the types like the grumpy old couple who came in crossly, didn't speak, waited three minutes said "why don't they employ more staff?" and stomped out again! In comparison, a most refined woman with her two teenage daughters said " We LOVE this place! We come here all the time, we would never dream of coming to Ludlow without a meal here. I agree with her, if you are holidaying here or a local do not miss this amazing original place!

A woman came out from back. Arms folded. Said they were not stale they were vegan and were meant to taste that way. I said we were not told they were vegan. They tasted very horrid. She said I've had some and they are ok. No apology . She was just angry. Lots of lovely cafes in Ludlow. We will not go where staff are rude and food is very below par. Use another cafe.

A day trip to Ludlow armed with a list of places to dine. However, we spotted this delightful family run tea shop offering afternoon tea. A quirky building with lots of rooms (not all readily accessible if you have mobility issues though so be aware). The stairs needed your full attention but sufficient hand rails provided. All the tables were set with tablecloths, china teacups and saucers. The afternoon tea for two was very well priced and beautifully served on a china tea stand. A choice of two sandwiches, choice of bread, served with side salad, two scones with cream and jam and your choice of cake from the counter. Two china side plates per person were provided with cutlery and napkins. Tea was served in individual china tea pots accompanied by a tea strainer. Happy days. The food was absolutely delicious, the service was incredibly friendly and with no delays. Our waitress, one of the younger members of the family, was warm, attentive and chatty. She demonstrated a pride in her family business and was eager to ensure that we were enjoying our meal. I am somewhat surprised to read some of the less favourable reviews as this wasn’t our experience and would happily recommend a visit.

Quite a small, old fashioned cafe. Nice food but when we visited, a young girl (I think it's family run so this would've been one of the daughters) was lay all over the blue sofa upstairs on her tablet which was just a bit awkward when being the only ones up there with her. I presumed she started her shift a bit after this. Upstairs is not suitable for anyone who has trouble walking as stairs are super steep

We went to Carvelles on 1st July, I took a table outside whilst my husband went in to order 2 beef sandwiches and a pot of tea. That was 1.45pm. At 2 pm we still hadn’t got anything. The waitress then appeared about a couple of minutes later with our tea and two napkins and forks for our sandwiches. At 2.15 we had drunk most of our tea and still no sandwiches. My husband went into the cafe to ask when we would get them, the four women working there were stood around chatting, they said they hadn’t forgotten. Our sandwiches then appeared a couple of minutes later. We asked politely if we could please have some hot water to top up the teapot, the waitress said yes no problem, you would think that as they had kept us waiting so long they would be on top of their game but no, the water never appeared. We paid £16 for 4 slices of bread cut into quarters with wafer thin beef on them. Would never go there again. They obviously don’t give a monkeys about customer service and their sandwiches are pretty poor.

We popped in on a rainy day for a pot of tea and some cakes. The service was quite slow. We asked what cakes they had and the waitress said that she didn't know. She then came back with a list of cakes. We tried to order from the list and were then told that they didn't have them. We went for the scones which as other reviewers have said were on the small side. All of us ordered the plain scone as opposed to the fruit scones but were brought fruit scones instead. The different teas that we ordered were just placed on the centre of the table with no explanation as to which was which or belonged to who. It was lucky that someone ordered Earl Grey as it has a very distinguishable smell. Similarly, we asked for milk and weren't provided with any, we asked again and it still wasn't brought over. We popped downstairs and asked for it at the counter. There seemed to be a lot of staff milling around the counter but not sure what they were doing really. I think this place has a lot of potential - the building it lovely, rickety and old, the china was cute and chintzy and it's a shame that it doesn't fulfill it.

We were visiting Ludlow for the day and decided to pop in to Carvell’s as it looked like a traditional cafe with a little quirky twist (in respect of the mismatch cups and saucers). We would usually head to a Costa or Starbucks but wanted to try a local cafe. My husband and I had a pot of tea (loose leaf), one piece of lemon cake and one piece of Victoria sponge cake (£2.80 per slice!!). We expected the cake to be moist and tasty but were very disappointed to be served very dry slices of cake and felt that the cost was far too much for such bad quality cake. I think we will stick to mainstream cafes in future!

A real old fashioned place in the heart of Ludlow. Service is second to none. Food and drink is excellent. they specialise in Tea making. The art of tea. So if you are in Ludlow and you are a tea officianado this is the place. Upstairs is a 3 seater comfy settee amongst other tables for food.

The need was for a tea shop with a table for four, the Saturday before Christmas. Carvell's fitted the bill admirably.

This tea room certainly looks the quaint old fashioned English tea room in an old and quirky building with the characterful old china tea cups and tea pots etc. however, behind this facade there are dirty window sills, curtains and floors, cobwebs and dust and a questionable toilet; a real grimy feel rather than characterful. The tea was very weak and the scones were dry and stodgy. Service was 'huffy'. Very disappointing.

Cake and coffee were fine, tasty and served promptly. Cafe has plenty of tables. Unfortunately the toilet facilities require a thorough regular clean. The toilet pipes were covered in layers of dust and dirt, as was the window sill, skirting boards and even the picture on the wall. It was clear it hadn't been cleaned properly for a long time. Cobwebs hung from the ceiling.

For those of you visiting the beautiful market town of Ludlow and seeing all the local attractions there will be a point when you want to take the weight off your feet and have a good old English cuppa ( think I'm allowed to say that being so close to the Welsh boarders )

What a lovely quirky establishment. Our family had a room at the top of the building to ourselves. The floor sloped the tables tilted (I’m not saying this as a negative, we loved the old building). We asked the waitress questions about the place and were delighted that the owner herself took the time to come up and talk to us about the history. On the slightly negative, all our drinks were lukewarm which meant we had to drink up quick. But we thoroughly enjoyed our visit regardless and just loved the quirkinesses of the building.

Rather nondescript from the outside and a bit rough around the edges on the inside, however, the staff were very friendly and we had a very enjoyable lunch. It was actually quite busy with people coming and going which is a good sign.

We were in Ludlow just for the afternoon. It was a very special day as Ludlow is my family name, my grandparents are from the area & this was my first time visiting the town. We wanted a true English experience & love afternoon tea. It was quite warm as well, so outdoor seating was also desired. We came across Carvell's & almost passed it by but thankfully decided to give them a try. The photos pretty much say it all. We LOVED it. The tea & the food were great. We've never had proper clotted cream, so that was a real treat! $22 stirling for 2, while ordering seemed a bit pricey, but turned out to be a good value. I am a pescatarian, so the egg salad & tuna were perfect, (though I believe we had options for other meat type sandwhiches as wel) Overall a lovely experience and the 'icing on the cake' for this bucket list day.

This is a very small establishment selling tea made with loose leaf tea among other products. It lacks atmosphere as people are so close to each other and subsequently very quiet.

We were Looking for a cafe which wasn’t part of a large chain. As no point in visiting somewhere to go to the same old. This place was recommended by a local bobby. Quaint little tea shop. I felt like I was at my grandmas having some sandwiches and tea in good old fashioned china tea cups. A very old building like most of Ludlow. The downside being the toilet was up some steep rickety steps. I loved them but not good if your not very able. A lovely find and would visit again

Atmosphere tops it all here at Carvell's. The tea, sandwich and cake were very good. I explored the shop to choose my table.. 2 (or 3?) levels with nooks and crannies, stuffed with cozy furniture, each corner feeling like a little Victorian parlor, found a nook by a window with a big armchair and spent a delightful hour. Staff must be fit to climb up to all the seating areas with trays in hand, but they were cheerful none the less!

The cafe is efficiently run and we enjoyed the rooftop seating in the sun today. Unfortunately the scone was stale. Quite a shocker for me! What a shame :(

I must echo the views of others. A really lovely restaurant spoiled by sparrows landing on the the table where cakes are being cut and on uncleared tables. Very unhygienic - there must be a way to stop them coming into the tearooms. Never encountered it anywhere else. Health and safety would have a field day!
