Carter & Co in Mendip

Nice Sunday lunch but very limited dessert choice, the only dessert available was cherry Eaton mess or ice cream everything else had run out. I liked the sound of cherry Eaton mess which I ordered but when it was delivered it was strawberry, no sign of cherries so I sent it back. Main course was nice though.

Was very underwhelmed by the dining experience here. After hearing lots of hype friends and I booked for a birthday meal, service was very slow & food was average. Won’t be rushing back!

I’m shocked honestly that this place has been nominated for best roast award, I love a roast and was looking forward to trying here as photos looked amazing, honestly and I’m sorry for this, worst roast in Portsmouth, veg raw and seriously they cut up a carrot and shared a sliver between us 4 same with parsnip. Pork belly not crisp but soft and flabby Yorkshire which easiest thing to cook was flat and doughy The beef was so raw we had a job to slice it and it stuck in your throat when you swallow The cauliflower cheese was raw and the sauce wasn’t cheesy and was like dish water So disappointed and shocked Waste of £90

Sunday roast…. 1x slice of beef, 3x tiny roast potatoes, 1x qtr of a slim carrot, 1x qtr of a slim parsnip and a burned cube of stuffing. Tiny Yorkshire pudding that hadn’t risen. Extra side - cauliflower cheese. All the veg was under cooked. Cheese sauce on the cauliflower was like water. At £20/plate this place is over processed and lacks quality. Looks pretty but substance over flavour. Very poor value

Very clean, neat and modern rooms. All basic necessities are provided and work well. Easy to access the building and rooms. Great for a closer stay to the seafront :)

Where to start? Sat down in the garden to enjoy lunch as the sun was finally out. within 5 minutes of sitting, the waiter brings the food waste bin out, empties it and starts noisily jet washing the bin. Finally he stops, only for the waitress to bring out the glass recycle bin! We were unable to maintain conversation due to the hideous noise. As our food arrives the cleaner comes down the stairs passing our table with bin bags from the guest rooms. Surely this should all have been done prior to opening to customers.?? Finally the food arrives - fishcakes and truffle wild mushroom. Fishcakes were dry and lacked flavour, the dish completely underwhelming. Truffle wild mushrooms were on a few slithers of thick toast (not homemade focaccia) which was dry, barely any garlic butter and without flavour. Having eaten here before and really singing its praises, I was utterly disappointed.

We did not have a very good experience, left waiting to give order for ages. Were told breakfast did not come with hash browns, had to order separately which we did. then found out on arrival of the breakfast that it did indeed come with hash browns so we had a pile of 10 between the two of us; streaky bacon instead of back which is rare for a breakfast. Husbands poached eggs were hard boiled eggs, sent back for fresh ones. No butter for the toast. Whole breakfast was luke warm so half way through eating it , it was actually cold. We did not enjoy it and will not be going back for a second visit unfortunately. Past meals have been ok but this time it was a big let down.

Lovely staff, great ambience. We were here after an evening out in Portsmouth, before heading to our beds in Carter & Co. hotel, which is above the charming pub. Staff was keen to advise on wine and beer options, and delivered them in chilled glasses! Attention to detail in the hotel and the restaurant were noteworthy. Highly recommend!

What a gorgeous stay we have had at Carter and Co . The rooms were spacious, immaculate and well decorated. The area is ideal for everything,gorgeous little shops and cafes. We frequented Delaney’s for a gorgeous breakfast and the cocktail bar and restaurant at Carter and Co served fantastic food, and to top it off a lovely outside garden . We will definitely be back and as well travelled people we give a 10 out of ten. Thankyou x

Really bad food. Starters were unseasoned then mains were incredibly salty. Service not great either. Staff need retraining

Over priced, small portions and cold food. Plates being cleared away whilst people still ate. Felt rushed the whole time even though it wasn’t busy. Wouldn’t come back. The whole experience was a bit meh.

First impressions were good with the decor really nice and it went down hill from there. Slow service, table booked for 4:30 didn't start eating until 5:20. We were told there were no starter options left but in all fairness free bread and olives came out which was good.We asked for roast potatoes as a side but they didn't have any so we had 2 free bowl of chips. Eventually the meals came out where 2 had the veg wellington of which was tasty but a very small portion, 2 kids chicken were sent back as the chicken was hard the remaining 7 had beef of which 2 meals had a lot of fat on the meat, we soon discovered why they did'nt have potatoes as a side as there were barely any with the meals. Overall i would say what food we had was nice but portion size and food availability at the time of our booking is something that i find poor considering potatoes are not something a roast shoud be short of. I would not recommend based on our experience.

2nd time we visited here and can only say both times where excellent, couldn't wish for better service even though the pub was really busy. I am sorry if I get his name wrong but think the waiter was called alby, nothing to much trouble for him and really quick to get our orders again ,love this place so much all the women from our party decided to book their Xmas Dinner party there . All I can say is try this place out you won't be disappointed

We arrived and the owner came straight over and asked what the occasion was and I told him it was my wife’s birthday & he immediately ordered a complimentary cocktail. We were asked to select where we’d like to sit & were shown to our table. There was a female singer which created a nice atmosphere & 2 Christmas parties as well. We selected our food and wine which was outstanding in taste and presentation. This was our fifth dinner engagement here and would definitely recommend.

Booked to come for my mum and dads birthday after being recommended by a friend. On arrival the venue was really nice and we were excited for our meal and it pretty much went down hill from there. My wife’s starter was completely forgotten, hers arrived 10 minutes later after we had all finished ours. 4 out of our group of 6 ordered ribeye steaks, all to be cooked medium. 3 came out completely well done, we pointed this out to the waitress and she went to the pass and spoke to the chefs where she appeared to be met with some resistance. After a couple of minutes she returned and took the meals away. When they were brought back out they were all missing sauces and broccoli. We did feel sorry for the waitress as the manager didn’t seem too interested and just left it to her. I went to the til to pay and the waitress came over and told me to hang on as the manager was going to take something off the bill. He came over, printed the bill, no apology, no discount, generally disinterested. Really disappointing as this was meant to be a celebratory meal which ended up being incredibly frustrating and a real let down!!! It’s a shame because the venue is lovely.

We have been here several times for drinks and Sunday lunch. the restaurant has been well designed and furnished, it is well located, in a pretty street and they now offer a simple, very well priced dinner and traditional Sunday lunch menu. However when it comes to service, especially from the duty management, they score poorly. We had issues from the moment we arrived and although the waitress said she would inform the manager, no one came to speak to us. We waited 15 minutes for menus and drinks and ended up going to the bar to ask for some service. our issues culminated when having waited 1 1/2 hours for dinner, a table across the bar, said 'We think we have your food here'. I appreciate mistakes happen, but I would have expected the manager to come over and apologise. when I went to find him, he told me I was lying, so I left and my dog got an excellent sirloin steak. On a positive, I understand that April, who was not working in our section was excellent in apologising for the issues and offered a gesture of good will. Maybe she should be the manager? All of our issues could have been resolved had the manager, taken the time to introduce himself and apologise. If a train guard and in-flight CSM can take the time to introduce them selves to a packed train and aircraft, as do many restaurant servers, it can not be too much trouble for a head waiter/manager to do the same.

Four of us went for Sunday Lunch . We had cocktails first which were excellent . The staff were extremely helpful and friendly and although the venue was very busy the service was and staff were quick and attentive . The Sunday dinner was delicious .An imaginative and varied selection of starters followed by a superb Sunday dinner . I had the pork which was perfect .

We had a bottomless brunch here, lovely food, lovely drinks but our day was made by the lovely server April. She was the kindest, most helpful waitress and really made the experience! Would recommend to anyone and hopefully you get April serving you! X

SERVICE WASN'T GREAT , FORGOT ABOUT ONE PERSONS MEAL . £20 is quite expensive & we only had 2 small roast potatoes so asked for more & then subsequently were charged £5 for a small bowl of extra potatoes of which we had 4 of them so £20 for additional potatoes !!! Not a great choice of desserts . There were 9 of us and not one of us fancied any of the desserts on offer !! The crackling with the belly pork was soft & not crispy . Will not be returning for a roast .....

Discovered a few weeks ago when walking to victorious popped in had a few drinks sat in the sun. Felt like we were on holiday. Popped in for a breakfast and it was out of this world. Best breakfast ever had. Couldn't fault it, superb quality of everything. Carter and Co has a really nice atmosphere too and the staff are lovely and friendly

Tried out the new breakfast menu here last weekend and was not disappointed. There really is something to suit everyone’s tastes and I really would recommend anyone to try it out. I opted for the steak and eggs which was cooked to perfection and beautifully presented. If choosing this option my only words of warning would be make sure you have a big appetite as the portions are large! 2 iced coffees later my hangover had gone and I was set up for the day. Renowned for their lunchtime and evening dinning combined with their excellent front of house and at table service provided the fantastic staff Carter & Co really is the go to place for the perfect culinary experience at an affordable price. A big shout out to the cocktail menu especially the Bloody Mary.
