Village Spice in Mendip

I've lived in frome now for a good while! 46 years, I feel a little old! I know village spice has had a lot of ups and downs over the years, what with quality of food etc but I have to say, our most recent visit was amazing!! Yes the food was nice, really nice!, lamb moist, nan bread soft! But what really made our night was the friendly front of house staff! Really friendly, young staff that were head and shoulders above many other waiters/waitresses from other restaurants we have visited, a natural flair, a great example on how to run a restaurant! They had a lot to do! But always found time to glance over to make sure we were all ok enjoying our food! This restaurant has often been underated over the years, but trust me, in its current set up it is hands down the best curry house in the area. You can even bring your own wine! Would highly recommend

Had a takeaway delivery. I couldn't eat it, it was all awful! Had the set meal for 2. My son also said it was the worse Indian meal he'd ever eaten.

We were a table of seven, each and everyone of us enjoyed our meal. The service was great, staff friendly and food was very tasty. Portion size was great and it was all very good value for money.

I love the village spice, been a regular here for many years. The prices are amazing, no big price hikes like others despite the cost of living crisis. The selection is diverse, I'm a vegetarian and there's plenty for me and lots of meat options. The owner is so incredibly friendly and helpful and a wonderful cook. The delivery is quick and reliable and food is piping hot. I 100% recommend!

You know when you’re driving along and you just fancy a curry? That just happened tonight in Frome, dogs were in the car and no one needs to see my Rottweiler slobbering while I eat my curry, so I popped my head in the door and was greeted by a lovely lady who welcomed me and offered for us to sit indoors, I explained about the dogs and she happily provided us with cutlery and an extra plate, the food was delicious, we thoroughly enjoyed it, we will return minus the dogs one day. Thank you again for the great service and lovely food. 5 ⭐️

The restaurant itself is a bit tired and dated but the food and service was excellent. Remember to bring your own alcohol!

Normally very good. I accidentally ordered Prawn Masala tonight and it was possibly the worst thing I have ever tasted.

What this restaurant lacks in decor and atmosphere, it makes up in the quality of its food. We had mix starters and chicken tikka, followed by a chicken dhansak and a lamb pathia. All dishes were well prepared, had the right balance of flavours and were well presented. This was the Sunday special at less than a tenner a head for 2 courses. BYOB certainly helps to keep the costs down. Excellent service by Molly who kept the restaurant ticking over. Worthy of more visits in the future and would certainly recommend.

Consistently deliciously cooked food, handy to be able to bring your own alcoholic drinks too, so very handy for groups of friends, saves a fortune on a night out...

Worst Indian takeaway we have ever had. Being northern our chicken tikka masala is spicy and tasty. This was like chicken cooked in coconut. My poor husband had a korma that he couldn't eat due to the chicken being undercooked and very pink. My mum's pasanda was bland and not very edible. All in all a complete waste of money. Gutted.

Booked 2 nights in frome, looking at somewhere to eat , came across Villge Spice as we love curry, Thursday special £10.95pp, bring your own alcohol, fresh and tasty.

I asked for chicken biryani but they gave me different food which Is I didn’t ask for it that’s second time so disappointed never use again

Poor hygiene- Thick Black Hair found in Tikka Masala. I find it terrible that hair coverings are not worn in kitchens to prevent Won’t be returning.

Excellent service. Quick delivery. Very reasonable sized portions. So much we had leftovers for dinner the next day! We had the set meal for four - great variety and all delicious. Would definitely order again.

Been using this restaurant for some years now but just had a very disappointing takeaway. Even more disappointing was the attitude when I rang up to discuss the issue with the food. Happy new Year, not. Won't use again.

As all ways loved the food . Best Indian in Frome . Alway delivered very quickly and on time. When I came to collect it's always ready.

Waited an hour and a quarter for our meal. Food was very poor, it was hot temperature wise but had no Spice and rather flavourless. Naan breads were the best part of the meal. Toilets are in very poor condition, with no lock, tiles missing and generally grubby.

I have been to all the Indian takeaways/restaurants in Frome and often alternate, had a meal delivered by these guys today and was so impressed that I decided to write a review (something I have never done in Frome before). The food was beautifully spiced, meat was tender, I felt the ingredients were fresh and the service was decent. The nan bread was twice the size of all the other Indian places in frome and free poppadoms and chutney/sauces was a nice touch, a banging meal, I will definitely be ordering from here again. Thanks village spice!

We had a takeaway meal which was delivered promptly. At first glance it seemed to be good. but when we came to eat it, the large lumps of lamb in the Rashoun (chef's special) were inedibly tough, and we didn't eat any of them. The sauce was watery and flavourless and the prawn biriani, although full of prawns, was also tasteless. The only good item was the tandoori chicken, but £28 was a lot to pay for one enjoyavble dish. We won't be ordering from them again.

Ordered through their online service which is powered by Kukd. All reviews are checked before being published so are hardly going to be a true reflection of their service/food. We collected our order at the agreed time, but were aware it had been bagged for some time as it was not as hot as you’d expect it to have been if it had come direct from the kitchen. Our order was presented to us in a plastic bag. We decided we could warm it ourselves when we got home. On arriving home, we opened the plastic bag to find that some of our order was in a paper bag inside the plastic bag. When lifting this bag out of the plastic bag, it became obvious (too late) that the bottom of the paper bag was soggy and too weak to hold its contents. The food fell everywhere. We reported this to the shop as the food had clearly been left to cool in the paper bag for some time before collection, but we’re met with aggression and rudeness in return. We hadn’t expected our whole order to be replaced, however expected at least an apology and to be able to inform them of what had happened so it didn’t happen to another customer. They just didn’t care. Most disappointing. To top it off, the food we were able to rescue was not as tasty as we were lead to believe from the kukd reviews.

Excellent food every time. Never no problems. Recommend to everyone who loves Indian food and who wants to try it . Best Indian around. X

First time trying Indian food here it was bloody awful plus didn’t put onion bhajis in wouldn’t recommend at all will not be going back !

Possibly the poorest Indian we've had. Watery, no heat in the Madras, no flavour in the Masala. Must have had an off day. Won't use them again

All the curries look the same but they’re really good.

Had a a great takeaway of Chicken Korma Goan Lamb Shank and sides. Arrived at the time I ordered it for and was delicious and a good price. What more can you ask !

Standard Indian fair with some lovely specials on offer. Friendly and efficient service and half portions for kids. Added bonus of BYO. Well worth a visit.

Absolutely diabolical. Ordered at 9.56 pm tonight More than happy to take my money. Still no show at 11 pm. Went over there the shop was all closed up. Disguting no food and take my money. I'm more than happy to go to the papers.

Admittedly, the food was quite tasty however the delivery service was terrible. They told us they would deliver to Whatley, but an hour and a half later the food still hadn't turned up when we're a 10 minute drive from Frome. The delivery driver had forgotten our butter chicken so had to turn around and come back. After all that, we didn't get one of our rice dishes and the food was luke warm.

You get what you pay for. Cheap average Indian food. No complaints.

Visited on a Saturday evening, with friends who have been here previously. Excellent food at a reasonable price and good service. Will definitely return!

Went to VS yesterday to celebrate a mate’s 50th. I’ve had the takeaway before and the food was ok, not great but ok. I can see why the restaurant itself is empty after the service we recieved. Having gone in at 18.05 we were greeted and seated and that was all the interaction we had with the waiter until about 18.40. In the meantime people arrived after us (seated customers) and their order was taken first. When I asked if we could place our order I was told “2seconds”. After 5 minutes the guy had still not returned to our table. (Bare in mind that there were only 2tables occupied). In the meantime the takeaway/delivery orders were flying out of the kitchen. When a customer walked in to place a counter order the waiter started taking his order before taking ours! This time I put my foot down and asked him when he had in mind to serve the customers in the restaurant!! He took our orders and then we didn’t see our food for about another 45min. Meanwhile the telephone orders were coming out of that kitchen thick and fast. When we eventually got our food it was ok. Nothing mind blowing. We left the restaurant at 20.20. If you want your food quickly I’d recommend that you place your order by telephone whilst sitting in the restaurant. You will definitely be served faster than waiting for actual waiter service.

Lovely grub, bring your own booze.

We were pleasantly surprised by the freshness and flavour of the dishes. Friendly and enjoyably low-key atmosphere. When I asked about a classic Indian drink they made it especially and asked how we liked it, wanting our feedback to improve it for future customers. Nice! Their vegetarian options are good but a little limited, and I would enjoy more South Indian dishes, but this is very minor compared to the home-style (my highest compliment!) quality and care.

Came to Frome for a concert, and came here for a meal afterwards, the concert ran on longer than expected, after a quick call they where quite happy with us turning up late (10.30 pm). We where served quickly but not rushed. There is a massive choice on the menu, all the normal stuff you'd expect, plus like ads of veggie dish and lots of specials. They only serve soft drinks here but are quite happy for you to bring your own alcohol, there is a Co-op just over the road with a large selection of chilled drinks. The food came out quickly, was fresh, hot, and we'll presented, tasted fantastic and was well priced. The service was very good, with friendly staff. If I ever come back to Frome, I will be eating here again, I can't understand why it only has 3 1/2 stars, should be 5!

Very disappointed my wife and I had a takaway Jal Frezi each and both of us noticed a burnt taste ,will avoid this restaurant in future. sted awf

Really really disappointed with my takeaway; the curry’s were lukewarm temperature, the sauces were disappointing. When I phoned to complain I was called a liar and had the phone hung up on me!I have never complained about any takeaways before and I find this absolutely disgusting. To be called liar when I am a very genuine person has upset me very much. All I expected was an apology and a partial refund, £35 on something that wasn’t even hot is a lot of money for us. Will never order from here again!

Food was good and staff very friendly

I only recently visited Village Spice for the first time and although it does not rank in the best Indian restaurants I have been to, it is a worthwhile visit. The service was great and the staff were friendly and welcoming. The food was really good and we all enjoyed our meals. The decor is not the greatest and at the time of writing (March 2019) I would say it could do with an update, there is also limited space on the tables. These are minor quibbles though as there is easily enough that's good about Village Spice to recommend visiting for a tasty meal, prices are good too!

Just been here tonight. Food is the best here. I tryed loads of Indian foods all over the place. I tell everyone about this place. Everyone who I told has come back to me and said I was right. Prices are amazing. I live over the road . They deliver to me when when I don't want to move. The best Indian food ever. Everyone grate there as well.

Eight of us in all, everyone enjoyed their meal. My wife & I started off with poppadoms, very light & tasty. The chicken masala & mixed masala was very good, tasty with good portions. Pleasant, if not overly plush, surroundings, with good service. Alcohol is not sold, however, pleased there is no corkage charge & soft drinks are available. Overall a good meal at a very fair price.

We went on the wrong night! There was (apparently) a member of staff missing and the take-away part of the business was so busy, the restaurant guests had to wait a very long time for food. The food was extremely good. This restaurant needs some better waiting staff, they were very distracted by a baby who was paying a visit, completely forgot our drinks order and took over 90 minutes to produce the excellent meal. It was a pity. Next time I'll get a take away, to be sure of quick service. My compliments to the chef. I suggest you reconsider the rest of the business - it could truly be the best in Frome with a little more professionalism. I hope you can take the constructive criticism in the spirit that it's meant. Good luck for the future.

The best chicken shaslick I have ever had. So fresh and juicy. Excellent seasoning and the onion bhajis were lovely too. Will be back soon

Visited here last week for a family meal - when you walk in there us utter silence No back ground music at all Service is really slow too - ordered popadoms which took 20 mins ( we were the only table ) Our mains took about an hour to arrive Again we were the only table I do like the place but feel that an hour is too long to wait especially at off peak time with no one else in

Tuesday Night £8.95 buffet. 12 dishes (mainly chicken) the best onion bhaji I've ever eaten. Good but basic Indian food experience.

Gone down hill. Used to be great (certainly for eating in), but just waited 1.5hrs for delivery after being fobbed off several times on the phone. Manager promised to call back in 30mins and never did. When food eventually arrived, it was cold. Id advise you just go to / order from Jhalmuri instead - their food is much tastier anyway!

The quality of the food is similar to the other Indian takeaways in Frome. The online booking system is very convenient and you receive free food/drink when you order over a certain amount which is great.

Meat was like rubber, sauces bland, poppodoms soft. , My partner was sick 10 minutes after we left. Truely awful food

ordered a delivery...driver rang an hour later and said he was down the road stuggling to find us, so i said i would wait outside for him (it was raining) half hour of waiting went by, tried ringing him again and again and he wouldnt answer. so i rang the manager to see what was happening, he said there is nothing he can do. i explained i had already paid for the food, but he said he couldnt find the receipt. i asked if he could return our money and forget all about it, he got very angry, swearing a lot and started to mention about me being british and that i should know how a business should be ran. really not sure why he bought that up? the food turned up 2 hours late and it was cold. if he had any common sense, he would of refunded the money then the next few times we ordered he would of made his money back. But we will never go there again. The food isnt the best anyway. There is a much better Indian restaurant in the centre of town, go there if i were you. first review i have ever made, but felt people need to know what kind of place this is.

Didn't go to restaurant but partook in their home delivery takeaway service. Described as the "Best Indian in Frome"; I can only assume that all other restaurants must be serving shlops. Our experience was not good, the food was delivered in good time although I was short changed by the delivery driver who mixed old pound coins in the change which are no longer legal tender, this is morally dubious in their actions. Secondly the food was foul, truly horrible. I ordered a Biryani, no curry was provided with it, to describe it as dry would be an understatement. All of the side dishes that were ordered came with a centimetre of grease at the bottom, which in all honesty was sickening. My friends meal whilst complete was bland and again inedible. The naan bread appeared as and tasted close to a well worn leather flip flop. The dry leathery naan did not compliment the dry bland biryani. We will vote with our feet on this place in future and avoid like the plague, each person should make their own choice BUT buyer beware. To describe itself as the Best Indian in Frome is trade description folly, I would recommend that the management team review this and maybe consider resetting the bar to - "Village Spice, we serve an indian style, barely edible food, in Frome

Not so good place for indian food.

Really good, fresh tasting food. Second time we have ordered from Village Spice and cant fault the quality. Delivery time 45 mins each time and I'll forgive my forgotten free bottle of wine tonight.

Really disappointed, I ordered 2 naan breads takeaway, that was all, collected at the premises, got them home and both were burnt, couldn’t eat them. What a waste of money. Very upsetting. I will NOT be going there again or recommending.

I stay in Frome occasionally for business but this was the first time I had a take away from Village Spice. The restaurant is spotlessly clean and the food was freshly cooked and tasty with proper pilau rice and an excellent peshwari Nan to go with my chicken madras curry which was just right - neither too bland nor too hot.

Great little Indian, good staff amazing food

We got a take away from here for the first time last night. Oh my! The best curry we've had in a long time. We used to live in Bristol and got a lot of nearly great currys (as well as some distinctly average ones) but there was always something lacking. Village Spice in Frome got it spot on though! We are vegetarian and ordered a veggie Afgan, veggie Dansak, Chana Masala, Garlic Sag, Garlic Rice and a Peshwari Naan. It was all so fresh tasting, full of flavour and not too oily. ...and also no artificial colours that you sometimes get. It was the perfect curry. We rarely write reviews but have woken up this morning feeling that this place deserves a glowing review. Thanks. We'll be back very soon!

Agradable, si no demasiado lujoso, entorno, con un buen servicio. No se vende alcohol, sin embargo, no hay botellas y refrescos están disponibles. En general, una buena comida a un precio muy razonable.

Ordered food for collection on 7th January 2017. Asked for chicken madras but when they repeated the order back to me they read out chicken masala. Corrected them. When collected the food, asked whether it was definitely madras and not masala. Confirmed it was madras. Got home to find it was... masala. Called them and was told that they would replace the masala with madras but not for 45 minutes. All other food would be stone cold by then. Wouldn't offer fresh hot food and was very insistent that we returned the masala I can only imagine so that they could resell it to another unsuspecting customer. I decided to cancel the order altogether and get my money back. I was told that they didn't have any delevery drivers available. Poor poor service. Told them I would not be a customer again and they didn't seem remotely bothered.

Un grupo de 5 de nosotros tuvimos llevar. Las raciones eran muy buenas y tanto de carne y platos de verduras eran sabrosos. Peshwari Nan, chapati, arroz, coco y vegetales pilau samosas eran agradables. Lo más destacado fue la particular sag chana (garbanzos y espinacas) que tenía un delicioso sabor ahumado. Pedimos dos curries de verduras, ambas muy similares, no podía distinguir entre ellos, pero ambos estaban bien. El único inconveniente era la cebolla Bhajis que eran excesivamente grasienta y frío cuando llegamos. El personal no era antipático, pero definitivamente puede hacerte sentir más bienvenido.

They have amazing friendly staff. Their food is incredible I never have any complaints with their cooking. Unlike most places i have enough meat in my curry to satisfy it whereas most aren't so generous. I'm now a loyal customer and constantly get free items in with my order and I am so impressed with this place it's indescribable. Takeaway started well, good onion bhaji and poppadoms but sadly went downhill from there. Chicken tikka masala, sag bhaji and bhindi bhaji all grim, king prawn masala ok. Very sorry about posting a bad review as really wanted to like this meal but very disappointed and not likely to return

I have eaten at The Village Spice on many occasions. Visited last Thusday for the 5 course deal for £10-95 and I must say it was great value with good size portions. Would recommend you try for yourself.

Just had takeaway delivered from these guys as the phone was constantly engaged at my usual. Chicken pathia, rice and naan. First class food not at all greasy nicely flavoured, speedy delivery for primetime. Reasonably priced. New regular for me ☺

We had a horrendous night there there was one waitress and one chef. The poor young lady was clearly very very stressed I'm not sure if her serious lack of people skills was due to the stressful situation or just her. The damn phone went off every few seconds which was infuriating. Only 11 costomers eating in but a steady flow of takeaway costomers. We waited a long time and the others only just got their food as we left. I ordered the chicken tikka biryani I don't not recommend this it is bland and very very dry so much so I wondered if I was eating grit. We sadly won't be going back.

Went this evening with a few friends for what we were hoping was going to be a nice meal, The service was atrocious, food was questionable and the 5 course meal price that is advertised is not what you end up paying and if you question this the lovely(ah hum) waitress disappears to the back, into the kitchen to get the chef. Will never enter this so called restaurant again

I've eaten at the Village Spice on many occasions, and have always found it to be very good in terms of food and service.However, before my last visit to the restaurant, I noticed, on their website, a discreet mention that their meat is Halal. Whereas I realise that this is what some people would choose, for me it presented a dilemma, because of the cruelty issues involved in Halal slaughter. I rang the restaurant before this last trip to ask whether all their meat was Halal, and was assured, rather ironically, that it was!Sadly, this almost certainly means I won't be visiting Village Spice again, even though, like I say, it is more than satisfactory in all other respects.
