Cart & Horse in Wigan

We called in with friends for a meal on Friday. What a mistake. We ordered one meal deal which included a starter (or dessert) a main meal and a drink, plus one main. Our friends ordered the same. Firstly we waited well over 30 mins for anything to arrive. Then one starter arrived and one main. Then about 15 min later another main. Then the second starter with what was supposed to be a main. Evidently the order had been taken down wrong (it was spicy meatballs and pasta as the main) all I got was the meatballs which was a starter. Eventually the final main meal arrived. By this time we had been there almost 2 hours. All the food came out at different times. They did offer to do anther pasta dish but by this time didn’t really feel like waiting. A member of our party did speak to someone (not sure if it was the manager or landlord) and we did get one free drink. Only of the two mans were acceptable. Won’t be returning.

What a beautiful pub, food is lovely and fresh and delicious, the landlady was such a lovely lady as was the lady behind the bar, all in all a great pub with exceptional service. I would definitely recommend.

First time in the pub, lovely warm welcome and the Christmas lunch was the best ever. Veg and meat were delicious and fresh and served deliciously hot,you don't get this in many pubs , will definitely be back can't praise the chef and staff enough and the decorations look amazing. Nice pub enjoyed the fish and chips but why is it so dismally lit in the front room. The locals area is nice and bright and inviting with warm lighting but the front room has missing bulbs in the wall lights and uses a cold white light. Awful.

Around my neck of the woods the Joseph Holt chain can provide decent food. On recommendation we were referred to the Cart and Horses. It was a Sunday lunchtime and not that busy. We ordered Garlic and stilton mushrooms. They told us that they had sold but that they would make new if he we could wait. No problems. Some pubs would just say none left by and leave it. When they arrived they were delicious. The rest of the meal was equally fabulous. Definitely one for the list

First off, the service is wonderful and in my travels, that's important. To me, Emglush food is basic food so I don't expect gourmet. The meat pie was very rich and I enjoyed it. The pulled bitter beer was tasty and not flat at all. I would not travel far to get there but if you are in the neighborhood, definitely stop by for a pint.

Wow. What a fantastic buffet put on by Elaine and Bernie. The food was absolutely gorgeous and there was plenty for all the guests and enough left to share with the other customers in the pub. Bernie made sure that we were comfortable and had everything that we wanted. Thank you so much from all of us

Pub grub is of excellent quality and the landlady is always pleasant and helpful. Good range of drinks as you would expect and all at reasonable prices.

I really can not recommend this place enough, the food is lovely and the staff are very friendly and always happy to help unlike a lot of food establishments these days, the chicken and ham pie is a must try even though the other pies are very good to, it’s as close to home cooking that you will get, unlike a lot of the new food pubs that have kids just using microwave’s. I go at least once a week sometimes twice. I’m sure if you try it you’ll agree with me.

Called in today for lunch , food was excellent & quite a lot ( don't know how much food a previous reviewer wanted ) staff friendly ,nothing was to much trouble, will definitely be recommend to family & friends .

Sorry I cannot agree with the reviews I,'ve just read, I find the pub expensive and the food very basic and you pay a lot of money for very small helpings. The drinks are so expensive as well !! We certainly won,t be going again and we won.t recommend it to friends !!

We had our tea ay the cart and horses astley last night. My hubby had venison and meat cottage pie And I had fillet steak and pepper baguette. All piping hot....and absolutely delicious. Staff were very friendly..and attended to our every need. Thumbs up to the chef who came and had a chat with us. I highly recommend a visit here..

We had the hunters chicken for lunch. Which we can highly recommend. The service was excellent, in particular we must mention the new chief, who came out to introduce himself and check on our order and is an excellent addition to the establishment. Highly recommended.

The Landlady and staff are the best, the home cooked food is always fabulous. We call in with my grown up kids and the grandchildren or any combination including friends. It's just always so good.

Meet my friend regularly here for tea as it's always great food and service. The staff are super friendly and efficient. Good portions and selections and have offers on too in the week. Worth a visit.

I visit here regularly and have enjoyed every meal I've had (which is most of the menu). It does get busy and sometimes there is a wait on food but it is worthwhile and we always plan to spend a few hours in there anyway...

I enjoy eating here as it real food cooked in a home style way, we have never had a bad meal in this place . Only down side I see is that there is not enough room needs a big eating area.

We eat in here quite often as it's near home. I've never had a bad meal and tried something different every time. The lager is always clean and crisp and the atmosphere is comfy with very friendly staff.
