Gastropubs go up and down all the time. The last time i ate her a year or so ago it was excellent. This time it was OK, but nothing was exceptional. My burger was overcooked, my companion's caesar salad was lacklustre and a bit on the mean side. The wine choice by the glass was the best feature. It is a lovely quiet, charismatic, spot for lunch, especially if the sun is shining on the garden tables. The staff are friendly and laid back in a matter that some might find disconcerting. On balance, as I live locally, I recommend this as a destination following a river walk in Hammersmith. We've got a lot of average restaurants so I suggest not aiming too high.

Really terrible poor service, visited on Wednesday lunch for daughter’s birthday, just two of us, empty garden except for table of 4. Menu’s shoved into my hand as we walked in, hands full, carrying presents so dropped a jumper, an embarrassing few seconds of realising this guy isn’t going to help me here, eventually he did the kind thing. Had to go inside after 15 minutes and ask if you needed to order drinks at the bar, no sign of anyone. The guy in charge was morose and deliberately caused an atmosphere. The icing on the cake was literally when he deliberately looked confused and offended when we asked him to light a candle on the cake, his lack of birthday spirit or service soon dampened the occasion by wanting to slap on a £20 charge onto the bill. Don’t visit this place, plenty of other local pubs to spend your hard earned wages in with gardens and delicious food.

Almost hidden away in Hammersmith's Black Lion Lane The Carpenter's Arms clearly has a reputation, to judge by how busy it was for a summer Sunday lunch......with the added attraction in good weather of one's being to sit in the garden area outdoors. A magnet for families, certainly, though a downside might be the consequent and unabated noise. The changing menu offers well-prepared and flavourful staple dishes, a hearty Sunday roast of slow-cooked pork belly being the focus of my own visit. Plates arrive loaded, my own dressed with a crowd of accompanying vegetable roasts including a carrot that had clearly vied for best place. If I say that the restaurant was busy then service, no matter how friendly, was certainly slow. Compared to prices charged at pub/restaurants with more pretentious profiles, prices here are relatively modest, and yet appetites are by no means short-changed. Worth a visit.

Clearly not a place for people with kids. Writing the review 5 minutes after entering the place. Walking in and the waiter very unpolitely shouting after the family whether we have booking. Saying we do not have a booking and sharing with two adult looking like complete idiots that anyway it is last order at 21:38 so may be another time. It would have been better just to communicate child policy - we do not want people with kids. I understand very busy day with first day close to 30 degC so more than enough to do. Are we going to go again; definitely not. Do these people think about others without no reasons that they are idiots; yes! Well done guys!!!

We ordered a small dish with sourdough bread and it came with two slices of toasted bread. We complained and the “manager” came to tell us that the chef told him that was sourdough SLICED bread. That’s it. Nothing more nothing less. I’d have appreciated more if they said sorry we ran out, here’s a glass of wine on the house. But no, a simple sorry about that when I said to the manager that the chef should not be a chef if he thinks that bread in is sourdough. I have a pic but I can’t attach it here unfortunately

Delicious roasts and we came here on a Bank Holiday Monday and shared a few small plates. It's usually closed on a Monday and Tuesdays with the exception of Bank Holidays. The selection of small and main dishes and desserts makes it hard to choose! Food is fantastic, seasonal and super fresh. There is a large garden and its children and dog friendly. Highly recommend foe a weekend lunch or dinner with friends or family. Great selection of wine to top it off and only a 10 minute walk to the river

Unfortunately this was a bad experience, even though I love this pub, and have recommended it to lots of friends. However, we had bad service, waited forever for our wine, and had finished our meal when finally the wine arrived. It wasn't even that busy..The food this time was ok'ish. But we got overcharged by almost £30 ( as the service charged also increased) and rang and told them. Yes, we should have studied the bill at the table, I know, but we were in such a hurry and didn't pick up on it until we were on our way home. Sadly we had to ask for an apology, which was a shame. They will reimburse us. Arrgh-Ugh.....I was disappointed that day. I have been many times and had better experiences. They better pull their socks up, I think..

I want to like this place more than I do. Lovely location and garden out the back. Interior is rustic. The service is pretty good. I met a friend here for lunch and it was delightful outside on a sunny day but, having suggested the venue, I was embarrassed by the quality of the food which was average at best. We both had Caesar salads as main courses with fries on the side. The salads were uninspiring, meagre and overpriced. We then had cappuccinos which were cold. I know times are tough but we felt they had compromised too much on quality in order to turn a profit. In the future, I would happily meet someone here again for a drink but not for a meal.

Some of the best food I've tasted for a while. We sat in the garden and it was very dimly lit so this accentuated the taste experience over the look on the plate. Portions are small. The wait staff extremely busy and struggling but you forgave them for the food. Pricey but worth it. Others in our party did not agree as their steak was undercooked and basically it was too dark to judge easily what was on the plate in front of them. If we do go again I would venture only on a less busy evening and I would aim to sit inside.

Food was good, and garden nice but the service was unfortunately verging on rude. We arrived at 2.30 for our 2.30 booking on a Saturday and they insisted we had to order asap because the kitchen was closing (online it says it closes at 3). It was quite obvious all the staff wanted to clock off early to take advantage of the first sunny Saturday afternoon of 2024. I can totally sympathise with this feeling but I am afraid when you have paying customers, who have booked and when it is on the higher end (£25-35 a main) you should be delivering a high quality service too. Sadly we felt rushed and unwelcome. Also had to ask for cutlery, more drinks and (ironically) the bill.

I read about the restaurant on a magazine and was excited to try it out. The food however fell short of our expectations. My (only available) vegetarian option was very bland and left much to be desired, the chicken was dry and the gravy in the beef dish was bland. Sadly, disappointing overall.

This used to be our local for food and drink, however after several poor experiences since the new owners took over, we decided to give it just one more try. I wish we hadn’t! Again, greeted at the door by two rather brisk employees telling us they were fully booked and only the garden was available…..If they had taken the time to listen, I was telling them all we wanted was a drink in the garden! Btw - only three tables inside were taken, not many more when we left an hour later! Then as we sat there finishing our drinks with our dog, a mother came outside to the garden ( dining inside with her family) having a discussion with her child about his toilet, then promptly sat him on a potty to pee and Pooh! I was under the impression this pub had toilets inside (!) and I seem to believe there are kiddie toilet seats most parents carry with them to attach to a normal toilet well we did in my day! What an interesting experience - rather put us off our drinks! I must add we were with our very well behaved dog who has never poohed or pee’ed at any time we’ve visited this garden of this pub! Appalling experience! Sadly we won’t be returning - instead we’ll venture to the wonderful Black Lion - which we highly recommend.

Although the look of the dining area is not very prepossessing, the choice of food listed on the menu and service are excellent. I had high hopes for this place as it seems to have a lot of fans. My first impression was how shabby it is particularly jarring in its location. The upstairs private room is pleasant, but getting to it is quite odd, and the loo on the landing looks like it hasn't been cleaned since the pub was built. The food is OK but rather simple, bearing in mind the price. One of the ales was off, which happens, but they continued to serve it after I'd pointed this out. In conclusion - highly overrated.

I live one minute around the corner. Rarely come here. Tonight really fancied a pint after work with loved ones, met there and was immediately asked if we had a reservation. I said no and started walking to the bar to order a drink. I was waved at and the Italian sounding man asked “sorry but you can only stay for 45 minutes.” Sums the place up. I’ve eaten and drunk here countless times over the last 13 years and can only say it is at its worst right now. Seriously what kind of pub asks you if you have a reservation and then tells you there’s a limit to how long you can stay? Food used to be excellent now it’s overpriced and not excellent. It’s run by people who DON’T KNOW what a pub is. As for reviews saying the food is good and unpretentious, do we live in different worlds? The place is full of one type of person only. If you go there you’ll know what I mean. It’s not a pub. Nipped around the corner to a proper pub, full of every type of person imaginable. Townies, poshoes, weirdos, construction workers, media types, old people with dogs, the best atmosphere and ended up meeting lovely people and having a great time as usual. I don’t mind that “type of person” I mentioned before. I get on with all types. But The Cross Keys around the corner is a proper boozer not this pretentious rubbish. I am one for always retrying places that I previously judged I don’t really like, but tonight’s visit confirmed all my pre-existing ideas. My review is not based on having walked in and walked out tonight, I’ve eaten and drunk here a few times under the current management. Will avoid for the foreseeable, perhaps until it comes under new management … again.

The menu does need some refreshing though as the limited offering was all heavy meals which given the warm evening didn't sit too well especially given the prices are what you would pay in good restaurant. I don't mind paying £30+ for a main course if it's great food but this wasn't quite there. However a little bit of focus and it will be back to it's 5 star best.

We offered to move if any diners arrived (it was 2.30pm). But apparently this was the policy and the manager was both inflexible and a little rude. Places like this shouldn't really call themselves pubs, if they can't welcome drinkers. I've eaten here many times before and the food has been OK. But they've lost my custom now.

This was the single worst pub meal I have ever had. So many things went wrong I will just use bullet points. - Arrived, no eye contact, had to wait until staff finished their conversation. - Paid for 2 drinks until waiting for friends, then it reappeared on our bill at the end. They specifically asked if we want a tab, we chose to pay, regardless they tried charging us twice.. Petty. - Waiter fresh out of school, zero knowledge about menu, no manners either, just didn't care. - Cheap service, high prices. - Table setup incomplete. - Had to ask for everything at least twice.. - Food overpriced big time. - 3 quid for 2 slices of cheap Lidl-like bread as starter. What a joke. - 26 quid for a ribeye steak that was so burnt and bitter I wanted to throw up. - CLEAN YOUR GRILLS!... It's disgusting. - Unevenly cut, unevenly cooked. Served with a half a handful of chips. Disappointing.. - Wine mega-overpriced off a very small mediocre menu. Staff clearly has no idea about them at all. You should learn more about your most expensive items, just a thought... - Laughable portions of 8 quid desserts, chocolate cake slice size of my finger. I thought it was an April fools joke but I didn't laugh.. - When we asked for the bill (twice) we received another table's much higher bill. - Then finally received our own bill with the initially already paid two drinks on... - Those were finally removed but they still tried to charge us for service charge. - The management clearly knows nothing about customer service in London. If you are this expensive you should do better!.. When you make so many mistakes at such an expensive place, you should offer some of the following to compensate: remove service charge, remove desserts, remove drinks, apply discount, be friendly and apologetic and show some sympathy instead of your meaningless explanation why your waiter is so bad at their job. Just amazing how little this place cares. - If you want to be a pub you should have more beer and not just 4 taps. - If you want to be a restaurant you should have better food and service. - If you want to be a gastropub, you should nail both!!! My final conclusion (from someone who worked in hospitality industry in London for years): You need a new manager who cares, can create a good atmosphere, and can improve the entire team: kitchen, bar and front of house. The menu is too pricey for the quality of food and the size of portions, make them cheaper or make them better. Improve your selection of drinks or charge less. Kitchen staff needs educating about the very basics, so they can deliver quality food and your customers will happily pay high prices and will return. Not that complicated. Same goes for your front of house staff, friendliness and care pays off. As for the facility itself, it has a very old feel but not in the good way. New decoration is much needed, it's like a teenager's bedroom with all the coasters on the walls, so boring.. The uncovered rusty tables and chairs from the garden must go too before one of your customers eds up in hospital in need of a tetanus injection.. Overall I would give my experience a 0 out of 10, it didn't even hit the bar to get 1. Seriously, this is embarrassing for the owners. It feels like they can't keep up with the prices and simply went broke but too stubborn to admit it. Fish stinks from the head...

This is a truly outstanding little gem tucked away near beautiful St Peters Square. We had an amazing dinner with our teenagers. The food was delicious, creative and seasonal. And the welcome and service from Louise and Walid were exceptional. We have previously booked the private room upstairs for a dinner for 12 which was a wonderful and memorable evening. Can't wait to return! Rob and Charlotte

Fantastic & so friendly. My wife and I were originally attracted to this pub / restaurant as her maiden name was Carpenter. Random I know but as we were in Black lion Lane why not. So you can imagine our happiness when we were treated to a superb Sunday lunch with such superb friendly staff. If all restaurants had such lovely colleagues we would all be happier eaters. Louise the manager and Walt (excuse my misspelling) were professional and friendly. Our food was great and the St Emilion lovely. We are going back this Sunday with my daughters husband and her daughter. Thank you again.

Went to a wedding here and it was the best wedding I've ever been to. The team was so accommodating, attentive and friendly and the food was the best wedding food I've ever had - everyone agreed! The staff also decorated the venue beautifully - would recommend!

Had a fabulous meal on Friday evening: beautifully cooked chateaubriand, hand-cut chips also cooked brilliantly, winter vegetables and an excellent dessert. Lovely ambience and great service. Highly recommended

Epically poor Sunday Roast. I order the only VG option which was cauliflower and literally got a slice of cauliflower steak for £25. The VG gravy was watery and side veg accompaniments poor. Daylight robbery!

Excellent autumn food, venison with berries, nuts and dark chocolate jus. Roaring fire and excellent service. Very good cheese board and a rare excellent dessert wine option - a late harvest gewurtztraminer

This is a beautiful old pub with an inviting real flame gas fire. Went with my family of 6. The food & drink’s were served very quickly. We had a combination of six different main meals & everyone was more than happy with what they ate. Five of us dessert of apple, berry & rhubarb crumble & custard which was to die for. Only hiccup was when we arrived at 7.30 there was a live band playing. Now as good as they were & the songs they played, they were rather loud & we had to shout at one another to make ourselves heard. When booking I asked for the quiet part of the restaurant as 4 of our group being 60-+ in ages weren’t to keen on loud music as we’d have to shout over it. But all in all a great pub with wonderful food & hard working staff.

This is potentially a Venue of fun full of the typical pastimes to entertain to your heart's content. Forthcoming music events are key to its future success.
