We were on a trip to Edinburgh to meet family for The Fringe. We had some time to spare and had been driving all night from Banbury, and came across this place. We got here around 7.50am and two lovely ladies were more than happy to accomdate us for a lovely piping hot breafast. Great portions, brilliant service, and extremely friendly. Defiantly recommend for a nice quiet, hot, friendly breakfast!!!!

Was here twice recently as I hadn't wanted the first experience to put me off. The first day, Thursday, myself my friend and her husband came in for lunch at around 2pm. My friend had wanted soup and a sandwich and was initially told there was no soup left - then told that there was one portion which the server 'supposed' she could heat up.... My friend declined and we instead ordered a cold filled roll, macaroni cheese and chips, and a baked potato with tuna mayo & side salad, along with 2 coffee's and a tea. There was not much change from £30, which was not great considering there was no table service. The seats were uncomfortable - assumed we had just picked a bad table (discovered next trip they are all uncomfortable) The macaroni was okay, the chips not so good. The cold filled white roll - coronation chicken- was spoiled by there being more sultanas than chicken, and the white roll seemed to be the only option offered. The baked potato was good but the tuna mayo had no flavour whatsoever. Trip two was the Saturday for breakfast for two people, about 9am. One person cannot eat fried/oily food and ad hoped for pancakes but there were none. So one double filling hot roll (black pudding and bacon and again only white roll was offered) and one chocolate eclair, and two pots of tea. No complaints about the eclair, black pudding or tea, but the bacon was very fatty. This cost over £11. Would only go back for the cake - and would probably ask for it to go. Too expensive for mediocre offerings and no table service.

Early for a rain and needing a bite. My usual place was closed so I explored. A big seating area and an excellent Lorne sausage roll, with onions. Happy day. Fast food, friendly folk, what more could a hungry guy want?

While on a business trip to Glenrothes area i decided to stop by this lovely place for lunch to catchup on some work emails . staff were all very friendly which is the only good thing i can say . The price i paid for a tuna salad roll with poor salad and soft crisps was ridiculous . This place has so much potential but until prices are reduced i wont be back as far too expensive for where it is . Feel sorry for a lot of the elderly that frequent there visits to this place as it is daylight robbery . Maybe the staff should wear stripey tops and robber masks .

It’s been a while since we’ve been here; it used to be table service, but now you order and pay at the counter. While the seating area is nice and clean, with complimentary newspapers/magazines, it is very uncomfortable as the seats are in desperate need of re-upholstering; we didn’t expect to plummet into the seats!! Other customers experienced the same as we could hear their comments when they arrived at their table. Staff however were friendly.

We were staying locally and got some take away rolls over a few days at lunch time. I have to say the food was excellent both cooked food on the rolls and cold food on the rolls. The cooked sausage and haggis rolls were very good and I had it both days. The cakes are also amazing and a good choice. The staff made you so welcome and nothing was too much bother. A very good experience and we will return when in the area again.

We have frequented this coffee house since its opening. However with no consultation with customers the management have decided on counter service and since the products are no more cost effective than Drummonds along the road where you can enjoy table service that is where we and our friends will be going for our lunches now. It is regrettable as the staff are a credit to the organisation and remain loyal under burgeoning queus and waiting times.

We’ve been using the Carlton for several years. It is a lovely comfortable hub for the local community. The food is good and wholesome and the staff could not be more helpful. BUT...the management have recently changed the system from table service to self-service. This is NOT an improvement for customers or indeed the staff. It has resulted in queues at the counter and has changed the whole atmosphere of the place. I’ve spoken to a number of other regular customers and no one likes it! Change it back to table service! Please!

Visited this place for a coffee and cookie to save us from Cabin Fever during the recent visit from the ‘ Beast from the East’ where snow levels basically ground the area to a halt. The staff had battled in and were in good spirits. An enjoyable lunchtime visit before venturing out into the white wilderness

Popped in for some afternoon tea/coffee and cakes. Waitress service, but can choose from the counter. The staff are really friendly and helpful and service is good. The cakes were also yummy. The bill seemed a bit pricey, but we were told that the cakes/food cost more when served up on plates in the cafe then when bought to take out - which is, I suppose, reasonable. Certainly worth a visit.

Popped in to Carlton's yesterday with my daughter as we were in the area. It was a bitterly cold day, so we quite fancied a plate of soup to warm us up. This is a takeaway shop as well as being a café. We explained what we wanted and were asked to take a seat in the café. Soup of the day was lentil, this sounded good, and just what we wanted. However, I am allergic to garlic, and my daughter has a dairy allergy, so we asked if the soup had any of these ingredients. Unfortunately it had both milk and garlic, so no soup for us! We perused the rest of their menu but there was nothing else that really appealed, and to be honest we were quite taken aback at what we considered to be quite hefty café prices, and I am well travelled! The café area itself was quite nice, although in our opinion the chairs were quite uncomfortable. In the end I decided to have a bacon roll to carry out, and can certainly say that I had no complaints with the food. If we were to visit again, we would most certainly purchase something from the takeaway only. Café prices were too high for our pockets. My average review score is based on everything, not the soup experience, as I feel it would be a little unfair to base our review purely on the soup.

I have visited a few times now and have always enjoyed the food and service, the macaroni cheese and chips are yummy! The eating in prices are a tad expensive, however if you are looking for a nice place to sit and catch up for a good blether and not be rushed put the door then a few quid extra isn't a lot to pay compared to other less comfortable cafes in the area.

This place has been redecorated since I was last in but glad to say food is just as good. It is great to get a real Scottish roll well filled instead of some of those cardboard baguettes that are around. Really good selection of roll fillings. Just don't look at all the cakes as you walk in as this makes it almost impossible to not have one of their fresh cream buns.

I changed my order today (yes, I normally have the same takeaway every time!) they were so very accommodating and I left feeling quite special.

I'm a regular takeaway user of this place. The lattes always hits the spot first thing in the morning. The food is freshly and tasty.I recently sat in here for the first time. Ordered 2 bacon rolls and 2 coffees. Came to about £10, which to me is a lot for what we received - 2 half pieces of bacon on a thinly spread roll. Not sure if it was just because we were sitting in but have never had that problem with the bacon rolls before, in fact any of the rolls. Will go back, but definitely stick to takeaway.

I have visited here on several occasions either for a lunch, or a coffee & slice of cake. The service is always prompt, polite and courteous, while the quality of the products is to a high standard and quality.I would say this is easily the best 'cafe' style business in the local area. Prices are slightly high I would say, however there are often special deals that make it easily affordable for all.

Went for steak night but extremely disappointed. Asked for medium steak but was more rare.Few soggy chips, hard peas and two underdone soggy onion rings. No salad as advertsed. Food was also cold. Asked for a prosecco and was told had no cold ones . Was given small one off top shelf behind bar but when I opened it it was completely flat and very yellow so I think it must have been on the shelf a long while! Lady opened big bottle which again came from top shelf so was not cold but was bubbly. Can't believe there was no bottles in wine fridge. Sticky toffee pudding was good though. Seeing as there was just one other couple in the restaurant there really was no excuse for steak meal being so poor as kitchen not rushed. Won't be rushing back!!!

Great location on the Old Course. Beautiful modern terrace on the top floor with stunning views across the fairways to the sea. So wanted to like this place but were disappointed. Food was standard golfing fare - steaks and lobster - OK but nothing special . Wine list reasonable for price and choice. What lets the place down is the lack of management oversight. Tables with broken legs, jet lagged golfers asleep in the lobby, incredibly noisy ambience all overseen by a well meaning but overwhelmed serving staff. Not what you expect when paying $400 for a meal for two. Dinner took three and a half hours. We had to track down staff to order wine, coffee and get the check. Could be a good dining alternative to the Old Course Hotel but its let down badly by the service. Seems its owned by one of those absentee investment companies and it shows .

Had afternoon Tea today(Sunday). The view is stunning, overlooking the golf course and the Forth. We had to wait around 10 minutes and received 4 types of sandwiches, a plain scone and fruit scone and a variety of cakes. The scones were some of the best I’ve ever had- warm from the oven, the cakes were light. We received a bottle of water and large pot of tea but had to ask for glasses. The toilets were a bit more dated than the restaurant but clean

Arranged to meet friends here for a lunch and a catch up. This is a very popular visit with very pleasant surroundings through a very large conservatory contributing to a very well lit area. There are a number of tables within the conservatory and your extensive menu is on the table. There are hot and cold food choices ordered at the server and brought to your table. We opted for chicken and rice soup and tomato and vegetable soup. To accompany the soup we ordered cheese and onion toasties and cheese and ham. We had carrot cake put aside for later that was the last of it. The chicken soup had a distinct homemade stock flavour with generous amounts of chicken through the rice and veg. The toasties came with crisps and side salad and coleslaw on the side. They were very well cooked with a generous filling. Finally the piece de resistance the home baking carrot cake came bursting with flavour very moist and topped with a very sweet icing. Would not hesitate to recommend to anyone and will definitely be back.
