Took friend to lunch - it was the first time I had been to Carberry Tower. The menu sounded good. My friend went for the fish and chips which looked good. I went for the langoustine tails on a strawberry and pineapple salad. When it was brought to the table I was shocked by “the salad” - it looked like a timbale of couscous or quinoa with what could be described as a tiny slither of a strawberry chopped into minuscule pieces (6 in total) you could hardly taste it and no pineapple whatsoever. No dressing - very dry. The dessert I chose was the coconut and peach pan a cotta topped with fresh mango and mint salsa with strawberry coulis. There was no taste of peach in the panna cotta - there was a nectarine and mint salsa but no sign of strawberry coulis. My friend had the ice cream and she was happy with it. If they had ran out of strawberries they could have taken the dish off the menu or come back with alternative dishes. However, two mains, two desserts and 1 ginger ale and 1 small glass wine and tap water £65. Won’t be back. Overpriced and over-rated - not impressed!!

Sadly the lunch today was ridiculously bad. Three of us ordered egg mayo sandwiches with salad at £10 each but couldn't believe how poor they were when they came. We weren't given bread options and the bread used was cheap, dry, thin sliced and white. There was no butter or spread used, the filling was sparse and was mashed egg only with no mayo. Very dry and the egg wasn't even salted. The 'salad' consisted of a handful of bagged salad leaves and nothing else. Another order was the liver pate which came with one slice of bread, which wasn't enough for the amount of pate, and no butter. My friend asked for more bread to use up the pate and was given one slice. We complained about the sandwiches and were told we wouldn't be charged for them and the supervisor offered us bowls of chips as compensation, which we accepted as we were hungry. When the bill came we'd been charged £1.50 for the slice of bread. We complained about that too and it was removed from the bill, as was the inappropriate service charge. We are a group of 8 pensioners who meet to eat out regularly but we won't be going back to Carberry Tower.

I took my 80YO mother-in-law who had lived within 10 miles for most of her life, and she'd never been before ! OpenTable said no availability, so called them directly. They had no problem accommodating us and explained how they handle reservations. If they have a large occupancy of hotel guests, they limit non-resident reservations for the Bistro, to ensure they have tables available for their guests, especially as they can't just walk outside and choose somewhere else. The menu is simple, not extensive, but enough to satisfy most appetites. We found the food to be a solid 7/8 out of 10 and the service was very professional and friendly. Prices are commensurate with the quality of service/product and based on our experience, we will definitely return in the future.

A lovely summer evening and we enjoyed a delicious dinner here. We’d been gifted a voucher for a 3 course dinner for two. (Just a little note, as luckily we asked when we arrived… the voucher covers food only, not drinks, so make sure your food total meets the face value of your voucher) The service was good, mostly friendly young people and a more experienced guy running the show. The pace of service was good, as we hate to be rushed. Our food was delicious. The ‘pistachio goats cheese with beetroot carpaccio and chocolate vinaigrette’ was tasty, but the decorative dark chocolate drops were perhaps a step too far! My vegetarian tart was delicious, if a tad over salted. We had a little peek at the hotel gardens after dinner, very pretty.

First visit with the other half and, to be fair the food was good. The Chicken Terrine was fresh and clean on the palate, the wagyu burgers were well priced and well cooked (and not overcooked) and the Pistachio Cheesecake was light and refreshing - so well done chefs. You deserve a 4 out of 5 at least. The 3 star rating is mainly due to the complete lack of ambience about the place and a very uncertain service. Staff were friendly enough but it feels as if no one is in charge and I lost count of how many times the receptionist came through for a "wee chat" with the staff. The other half even noticed staff nibbling food behind the bar. In fact, there seemed to be a lot of staff not connected with the restaurant just "popping in", so much so that when we left the receptionist and, I think, the head waiter were so engaged in conversation that the words "goodbye" were missing... so we sloped off, well fed but a bit bemused. By the way, there were actually 2 guests waiting to check in when we left. And here's a note for any person heading there - when the waiter asks if you want water when you arrive just make sure they mean tap water... Our bottle cost us £4.25!!!

First visit. Impressive building stands at the end of a long driveway. Bistro is cosy with a log fire. Service was very good and the food was excellent. Only slight disappointing item was the cheesecake which was bit on the solid side but everything else was well cooked. Surprisingly quiet which was good for us as we weren't rushed out and spent 4 hours at dinner. Would recommend.

Young inexperienced staff. Came to take order before all the party had arrived. Removed glass of wine when clearly it was not finished. Coffee bitter and cold. Told the replacement was the best they could do (young waitress) and if not satisfied to speak to the manager who we didn’t see all night. No heating on, not even a coal fire. Sat with coats on! No atmosphere whatsoever!

Santa experience was such a disappointment. Literally got out the car, walked past some candy canes and a few lights (woodland experience?!) sat in the “cafe” area. Yes the girls were dressed as elves and there was a tree, straw and some kind of booth but that was it! No magical Christmas experience or atmosphere at all. Santa was behind a curtain in the corner of the room and although lovely he shouldn’t have been Santa. Far too young and his beard and hat were falling off. Toy was a crappy cheap soft toy, for £15 this was a total rip off. Such a lovely setting that could have been great but just done so cheaply

Very pleasant evening meal in a nice setting I was a little surprised that the menu wasn't more expansive but there's a reasonable selection at decent prices We shared a very good terrine that was weakened by an attempt to create fancy toast when something simpler, such as oatcakes, would have done I had the roast lamb, a decent portion but quite fatty. And there was also a nice fish and chips. It was all very nice and whilst there were errors they were rectified quickly. Worth a visit but I'll wait for a while before returning in the hope the menu changes

2nd year in row, very close to where we live, lovely house and grounds but the Santa's grotto really needs more effort for the money you pay. Once seated, asked if we wanted refreshments before seeing santa which we did, they had no snacks for kids on menu, only large chocolate muffins... Not for 2 and 3 year old. Only had our coffees arrive at table and told our turn for Santa and not coming back to table after. Santa is lovely but kids present is very cheap. People dressed up as elves but that's it, no other effort put in to add magic to experience which could so easily be done.

Beautiful setting in private estate where the welcome from Chantelle was mind blowing! Never before have I been so welcomed on arrival in any hotel. What a gem she is! Our lunch was delicious and served by the outstanding Isabella whose expertise and manner shone throughout. The fish was lovely but the homemade sticky toffee pudding was the best I have ever tasted. Can't wait to go back. Next time we will stay in one of their superb suites and indulge in afternoon tea which looked double yummy. Memories are made of experiences like this. We ate here last evening using a Christmas gift voucher. It's a lovely old building and pleasant dining space. Service is friendly, if a little hit and miss. Food good - soup and especially garlic mushrooms deemed especially tasty. My husband had the chicken which he really enjoyed while I had the burger, which was not bad, if a little dry. I had a very decent small glass of zinfandel. We'd like to come back one lunchtime to experience better the grounds and buildings. a good Christmas gift!

As customers presenting an Itison voucher we felt treated as second class citizens. We were given a very limited lunch menu, different from the one posted on the restaurant website or the link provided within the Itison advert. It was very obvious that dishes were made down to a price. Our starters were poor; the main courses were OK. The service was fine. Overall it was a disappointing experience and we will never return to this restaurant.

I arrived to encounter a very frosty receptionist who said on meeting me ‘Name!’ I would of expected at least ‘Hello or Welcome’! The next communication was ‘She’s already here!’, this was referring to my friend that I was meeting up with. It is unfortunate that the staff obviously require training as the food and ambience in the Campaign Rooms was very good but spoilt rather by the staff and lack of manners. Disappointing as it may influence returning again or recommending to friends.

Your reviews of your bistro appear satisfactory I wish the same could be said for afternoon tea. We had a number of staff bringing different parts of the tea from soup, tea coffee and cakestand. The waiter reamed of the possible selection of sandwiches which was as it turned out not correct . The plain scones had to be returned and the cakes were thrown on to the plate there was quantity not quality. The building itself has histry and characher but this in turn raises problems.Having a lift does help but staff need training and an understanding in what hurdles people with mobility issues face. I have spoken to a member of staff regarding this review

Visited on Saturday night with a large family group. Nice selection of starters and main courses. I chose the Salmom to start and run eye for main. Both well presented and good quality. Tough to compete with some of the new steak places in town. Think Hawksmoor or Gaucho but my steak was cooked perfectly and had decent flavour. Will definitely go back. Just one thing it was quite cold in the dining room so may need to think about additional heating over the winter months. Should also say the service was very nice and felt welcomed and valued as a customer.

Pleased to be sharing a more favourable review of here. My previous 2 visits have been disappointing due to extremely poor service however...on this latest visit, the staff redeemed themselves. The receptionist greeted us warmly on arrival and escorted us to the Bistro then a young waitress said we may have to wait around 10 mins before our order could be taken as she didnt know where the waitress staff were?!?! Eh? Anyway, a charming young lady soon appeared, cleaned our table, gave us menus and promptly returned with water for us. We gave her our order and didn't have to wait too long at all! (don't know what the younger lassie was talking about earlier, I recognised her from a previous visit where she made a mistake- she seems highly nervous) I had a bbq pulled pork toastie with trimmings which was nice and my partner had filo parcels filled with haggis which were amazing- I'm getting them next time ! When paying our bill, we asked if we could order coffee and have it upstairs in either the library or music room area, so we settled ourselves in a lovely spacious room overlooking the driveway and enjoyed our coffee which was served to us within a few minutes. Finishing our visit with a walk in the garden, I felt as if I had really enjoyed our visit here and hope to visit again.

Called in for coffee and cake. Although there seemed to be at least 6 staff working and only 5 tables occupied with plenty of empty ones, it was a complete palaver to get a table. We were made to feel an inconvenience for asking and the welcome was rather inhospitable. Finally, after a lot of standing around waiting for someone to "prepare a table" and much flapping, we were finally allowed to sit.

Went for a late lunch and got a table for 2 no problem. 2 large parties the only other diners. We placed our order and waited .. and waited. The other tables were all being served which was fair enough as there were large groups all wanting their food at the same time but- I noticed a mature lady who was helping serve the other tables look over at our table, a few minutes later she came to apologise for the delay and explained something about a printer not working in the kitchen and our order had been missed but was being prepared now. So after 1 hour 10 minutes, we finally got our food, except, the ciabatta that was supposed to accompany my salad was missing. I checked with our original waitress and couldn't hear her quiet mumble reply but she agreed I should have had the ciabatta and I finally got it a few minutes later. The food was okay but I'm afraid our dining experience was already quite spoiled. We ate, then got up to leave. The mature lady took 10% off our bill (which my partner actually gave her back in tips) and asked if we would like a free dessert- all to make up for the mistake, but to be honest, as much as I would have liked a free pudding, asking us on the way out was leaving it a bit late. The staff could and should have been a bit more attentive. Yes, thete were other bigger groups than our total of 2 but you really do expect more from an establishment such as this that constantly sell themselves as high quality. Overall, I am disappointed and probably won't rush back. There's just something lacking about this place and as well as the guests paying a fortune for accommodation, wedding packages etc, it would be appreciated if Carberry could look after their occasional lunch visitors. It's not asking for much!

We went here with a Voucher and on arrival were impressed by the building which I had not visited since the early 60's. Directed into the 'Campaign Room' by very nice staff and sat down , lucky not close to the fire, which is a lovely feature, but it does give out a lot of heat. Prosecco was part of the deal, but when we enquired about a Non Alcoholic substitute for the driver all that was on offer was standard selection of soft drinks or alcohol free beer. No Alcohol free wine either normal or sparkling. When it came to ordering the food the 'Voucher Menu' was very limited but we opted for the 'Fish Chips & Peas' and the 'Stroganoff'. The batter on the fish was fine, however the portion of fish was miniscule and would be classed as 'Child Portion' in an establishment a few minutes drive away. The Stroganoff was vastly over salted and barely palatable. We chose the 'Crumble Tart with ice cream and strawberry' for the sweet. The filling of the tart was very tasty with a nice winter seasonal flavour, But if you attempted to cut the tart it was so hard and overbaked it shattered and flew all across the table and onto the floor and a bit even ended up on a neighbouring table much to their amusement. The Strawberry was also so underipe that it could not be cut with the spoon. When an establishment offers a voucher it is normally to encourage you to try their food and enjoy the ambience and come back again, but in this case it has done the opposite and in this day and age especially for an establishment so far away from public transport not to have a selection of non alcoholic wines [Which are now plentuful and very good] for those who have to drive IMO is just unacceptable in Scotland where we have a virtual Zero drink driving limit.

We got an Itison voucher for Christmas and booked up to spend it on Saturday night. First thing I would say is if you are going to the Campaign Room make sure your satnav is working as it is not the easiest place to find. However on arrival, only ten minutes late for our booking, we were shown through to the dining area. As we were using a voucher there was a restricted set menu available. But the choice was good and the quality of the food was good. We used our voucher for starter and main course but as we did not fancy the desserts on the set menu we were permitted to choose from the main menu. The cheesecake I had was especially good. Service was good and I would certainly go again now I know how to find my way there.

I was lucky to spend one night at Carberry Tower recently and it was very impressive. The room I had was very small, as a few reviewers have written about the size of some rooms. This was a castle in its day so there are a few smaller rooms, garrets really, with single beds and tiny showers. However, the room was meticulously clean and if you need more space ask for one of the hotel's suites. This was the only place I stayed which was a historic property but had an elevator so no carting my luggage up three flights of stairs. Small inconvenience in other lovely places but so appreciated on the penultimate night of a ten day stay in Scotland. Food was good and the waitstaff was very friendly, albeit a bit slow in getting courses out - I agree with other reviewers that each course took an interminable length of time to arrive. But the property is very lovely with beautiful gardens and lots of walking areas. I will definitely stay again. But next time in a suite.

Picked up a dinner b&b; voucher on Itison.com so my partner and I thought we’d give it a try. I’ve seen their restaurant on Facebook a few times and was quite tempted. The hotel itself is a 15th Century stately home and looks very impressive upon approach down the tree lined avenue into the grounds. Check-in was efficient and front of house staff friendly and informative. The Princess Margaret suite is generously sized and the views of the grounds delightful. There’s some nice walks in the woods nearby with delightful views over to Edinburgh. Dinner was the Bistro menu as per the voucher deal, but had are reasonable choice of dishes to suit most tastes. There’s also an a la carte menu that other tables had chosen from. Food service was friendly and and the dishes prepared were tasty. Smoked Mackerel pate is worth a mention. I had a sea bream main, with prawns and tarragon sauce that was delicious too. The cheese board was ginormous and I couldn’t manage it, despite having a large appetite. My only one criticism was the bathroom in the room suite. Again beautifully presented with a large bath, separate shower, toilet and bidet. The bath was a little grimey around the sides and I found quite a lot of body hairs lying around including the sink plug hole. I would still recommend the hotel for a visit regardless.

We had a wonderful afternoon tea with champagne at this hotel. Beautiful surroundings and very pleasant staff. We had booked for 3.30pm but got stuck in traffic. We did not arrive until 4.30pm but this was not a problem and we were welcomed like old friends.

We visited for a birthday celebration and had a nice meal with good service. The bistro has a good menu with a decent choice of dishes. The staff were attentive and helpful. Food was well presented and mostly well cooked (the duck was a bit over cooked). Prices are normal for a bistro of this calibre.

Welcomed the moment you walk in, The receptionist very knowledgeable and invited us to go anywhere we wanted, open doors look inside, Plenty of spaces full of history. Lovely lounge spaces. We stayed in room 210 which was the nannies room with the day nursery on one side and the night nursery on the other. It was smallish but as it was the nannies room then I would expect this. Lovely breakfast. Go Im sure you wont be disappointed. Would be lovely setting for wedding

What an exciting and amazing place. From the character reception dating from 1480 with the thick walls and wooden panelling through to the first floor library, music room and character drawings rooms to the exquisite bedrooms and suites - a truly great place to stay. Oh and the food was good and staff very friendly........

We visited the restaurant at Carberry for a meal with a group of friends . The portion sizes were disappointing considering the price of each course . The drink menu was also overpriced . This was meant to be a discuss occasion , yet was very basic and overpriced .

I was here with a large group. The venue is stunning but sadly the food did not match this. The sandwiches were slightly stale and unexciting. The range of cakes was good but the flavours were very average.

Eat here while staying at the hotel. Service was 1st class, food was excellent and very reasonably priced. The fish and chips were one of the best I have had. The grounds are beautiful with tables and chairs outside for pre dinner drinks.

The food here was good however I felt that they charge similar prices to restaurants in Edinburgh where you can get a much higher quality dining experience. The ambience of the meal was ruined slightly as there was a wedding party in dining the night before the wedding on Saturday so they were very loud - although in fairness the staff did apologise for this and I accept there wasn't anything that could be done about this. The service I felt was a little bit lacking - the staff seemed a bit uninterested and I think in other restaurants at the same price point we've always had much more attentive service. The food on the whole was good though I'm just not sure about the value for money of the whole experience.

Visited late on a Sunday afternoon and got a table in the bistro no problem. There was only one other table occupied but they were nearly finished dining so we got the place to ourselves. So, we were the only diners and our order was taken quite quickly. I had the Mansion House burger and my partner had posh fish and chips (that's the menu's description, not mine!) While I appreciate the burger was probably made from scratch, it did take 30 minutes to arrive - and we were the only people there! However, I cannot fault our meal. Both were delicious and reasonably priced. The bistro is a pleasant setting. There is such a rich old history surrounding this building, I find the refurbishment of some areas of the house a bit odd. It sometimes looks too new! Some character is lost by the over zealous accessories of stag pictured cushions and tartan everywhere. We know it's old. We know it's Scottish. Anyway, that's just a minor personal gripe of mine as I remember it differently from 'way back'. It is well worth a visit for a lovely dining experience.

Visited the bistro at Carberry for dinner with friends. A nice friendly welcome in cozy surroundings. I chose the scallops and black pudding starter which was excellent and cooked perfectly and my wife had the same. For mains I went with fish and chips which came with hand cut chips and mushy peas. Simple but nicely done. My wife had the beetroot risotto which she sid was very good. No puddings as we were by then quite replete but our friends who skipped starter managed the sticky toffee pudding which was another well presented and tasty dish. Will definitely be back again. A final mention to the staff who were very attentive and friendly and added to our experience.

Staying for a cousin's wedding we found ourselves in an attic with a comb ceiling, the smallest double bed imaginable and yet still hardly any room to move around. The bathroom was a cupboard and with only one elbow extended I could touch both walls, the shower was tiny and had black mould at the base. The sink was A4 size and the stopper did not work.I voiced my displeasure to several reception people and eventually was offered a derisory reduction which cannot make up for a terrible experience.A reception person asked me to put it in writing to add 'gravitas' but one month later they have still not replied

Plenty of history and oodles of charm. It was like staying in a Scottish castle - in fact the Queen mother, the Queen and Princess Margaret did in the 1939sWe stayed up in the garret - v atmospheric ! To balance the review, the only disappointment was the porridge - YES the Porridge !!! It was so stodgy, you needed a sledgehammer to cut through it. Everything else perfect and look forward to the next visit - but I'll bring a Quaker Oat instant porridge !!!!!

Having booked a table for 7.15 we waited a long time for service and even longer for our first course to arrive. My food was very good, Beetroot rissoto with goats cheese and walnuts, but one friends had chips which looked as if they had been cooked several times and were a dark walnut colour. After another long wait we have our orders for sweets and again another long wait. By this time it was almost 9pm. We waited for a coffee order to be taken but that never happened, instead we were presented with the bill. Poor service overall.

Having had lunch recently at Carberry Tower and enjoyed the historic surroundings followed by a pleasant walk, we took our Grandchildren there for coffee.Turning in to the approach driveway we noted the pleasing sign advertising coffee, scones, and snacks. The reception area was staffed but no one greeted us or asked if they could help. We progressed through to one of the lounge areas and took a seat. We waited and waited, no one came to enquire as to our requirements, so after 15 or 20 mins we stood up and left.Passing through the reception area again no one acknowledged our presence or departure as we made our way to the car park.We took a short walk through the grounds and noted the sudden proliferation of "no dog walking signs" nailed up on every second tree.It would appear Carberry Tower resents country pastimes and not only that but has no real interest in passing trade.
