The Captain's Table is an Art Deco inspired cruising restaurant. Private functions, afternoon tea and champagne cruises. We also have the Captain's Launch, a fully refurbished 1920s river cruiser. Perfect for river trips and afternoon teas. No expense spared on this lavish dream of a boat, kitted out by Captain Trevor himself

A party of 15 of us spent an afternoon on The Captains Table in June 2015.. The boat was a beautifully appointed canal boat with plenty of room for us as we sat at tables for 4. Crisp white cloths adorned the tables which were set with beautiful cutlery and crockery. On arrival, and as the boat set off, we were greeted with a glass of sparking wine. The atmosphere was totally relaxing and reinvigorating as we glided along the river for two hours, enjoying all the wildlife that is only visible from the river. Half and hour into our cruise we were served a lovely array of freshly prepared sandwiches; soon to be followed by delicious scones, clotted cream and jam and a variety of home made cakes. All in all it was an afternoon to remember and we disembarked, renewed, invigorated and relaxed, vowing to do it all again in the not too distant future. So if you are looking for something completely different for a celebration you certainly cannot beat a cruise on The Captains Table for first class service.

Don't visit if you use "Gift Ideas For Two" vouchers. We had a voucher valued at £79.99 and had a two course meal (very nice!) plus a couple of drinks. I was given a bill for £55.80 but did not expect any change from the voucher. I did think I might pay for the drinks but was asked to pay for the desserts & drinks, total £14.80. This meant the voucher was valued at £40.20 by The Captains Table owner - he has a dispute with the voucher company! A very pleasant lunch & cruise ruined by the unpleasant character who seems to own the boat - shame his customers pay for his contract issues with the voucher firm.

We took two cruises on the Captain's Table during 2013, inviting friends to join us. In each case it was a good experience, with interesting views from the river accompanied by pleasant Sunday roast meals served well. I'd give it full marks for efficiency. The business was sold over the winter and is now run by new owners. In March 2014 we invited friends to lunch in May on the Captain's Table. I rang the new management (they have a Downham Market number, not a Huningdon one like the previous owners) and was told they were quite busy. I expected this; I arranged a date for 18 May. I confirmed the date with our friends, who had to travel some distance. They were looking forward to the cruise and lunch. Under the 2013 system I had to pay a deposit when making a reservation but this time no booking fee was aked for. I queried this and was told that all they needed was an email address and a phone number. Ten days before we were due to go for lunch, I had heard nothing from the firm. So I telephoned them again. They confirmed the booking and told me we just had to turn up at Hartford Marina for 12.00 on the day. On Sunday 18 May, after 9.00 a.m., I received a phone call from the Captain's Table, cancelling the booking. No apology was given. No opportunity to book again was offered. 'We're not sailing today,' is all I was told. I tried to phone our friends but by then they were driving and couldn't be contacted. So, the old management gave us a first class service on two occasions. The new one has been discourteous and the service appears incredibly unreliable. Don't book with them unless you don't care whether or not your booking is cancelled at the last minute. I'd advise anyone thinking of booking to check out nearby pubs. That way you will have a back-up place to eat.
