Captain's in Brighton and Hove

Beautifully fried fish and chips with mushy peas. The batter was crispy without being too greasy, and the chips were perfectly done. The gelato for after a was also well received by my daughter. Well worth a 100 mile round trip!

Came here for a dinner after a day on the pier and the food was lovely! Chose to sit across the walkway from the restaurant by the beach. Service was quick, the food hot when bought over to us and was delicious! The staff were very friendly too. Would definitely recommend this place to others. Going back tomorrow!

Battered fish was saturated in grease, not a nice experience, overpriced, over rated, and the staff looked like they didn't want to be there....recommendation, seek alternative venue. My rating 6/10.

Recently went to Captains in Brighton with my and 2 friends from abroad and the flavour of the fish and chips is second to none. The service was fantastic. The staff was friendly and helpful. If you are around Brighton and looking for some excellent fish and chips Captains is the place to be.

It is located a stone's throw from Brighton Pier and the beach, excellent fish and chips, the lady owner extremely kind and helpful. Many greetings from the Italian family 😊

We ate a typical fish and chips in this restaurant, the quality of the dish was very good, the fries are in very satisfactory quantity knowing that we can have more once! The view from the restaurant is magnificent, totally on the beach! Small negative point, the curry sauce had to be paid for and we were not informed. I recommend it all the same!

eating fish and chips by the seaside is a quintessential Brighton experience and Captain’s is the place to go. fresh & delicious cod and chips with friendly staff. just be mindful of seagulls if you take your order to go as they can be quite aggressive. one of them stole food straight out of my hands.

Came here on Monday as the reviews were very good. Fantastic location next to the pier, can choose to sit on the beach or inside. Food was excellent and I’ve used some chippies in my time…..Staff all lovely and helpful but one lady particularly looked after myself and my 84 year old mum like she was her own. My mum was sat there working out what she wants to choose next time I take her! Praise indeed!

The fish and chips here were delicious. The food was freshly made, the cod was cooked perfectly and the chips were tasty. Luckily the seagulls were staying away as it wasn’t busy when we got there. Staff were friendly too. We had some awful fish and chips at another establishment in a different seaside town for a similar price so we were pleased we finally found some that tasted as they should!

The regular sized cod and chips was £13.70 when I visited in August 2024, which seems high, but seems about right for touristy Brighton. I had dinner here and the food tasted fresh and flavourful. However, around the end of the meal, someone who I presumed was the owner came around to talk to people and reached me last. I was about to head off but she asked about my experience there, but I felt a bit uncomfortable with her joking style so the experience didn't feel as welcoming as I thought. The staff, however, took my order very promptly and explained how I will receive my order. 5/10 i recommend this place. However, I would probably not come back to not risk feeling uncomfortable again

Oh my days! This is the best chippy I have ever been to...EVER! Visited Brighton for a weekend with three friends, and there was no way that we were going home without having our traditional fish n chips. Both fish n chips were super fresh, and the curry sauce...mmmm! Really thick, gorgeous! This is a chippy you must try. I'll be back on my next visit to Brighton!

Legit the best fish and chips in Brighton. Always come here when someone is visiting in time. This time, Gemma is went above and beyond in customer service when my friend hurt herself on the beach. Sean makes THE BEST cocktails. If you’re near, do check it out.

Pam was so so kind and welcoming to our large group of kids and young people. She couldn’t do enough for us and she made our group feel so welcome. Thank you so much we will be back next year!!

Nice restaurant on the beach, the regular fish'n chips are already quite plentiful and good. We had a great time. The prices are quite expensive but fair in value for money.

I took my parents to Captain’s for some authentic fish and chips as they were visiting from the US. It did not disappoint! The service was great and the woman who works there was lovely and so sweet. Thank you!

It’s ok. Don’t see what the fuss is. Takes ages to get served (so at least it’s fresh), they charge £1.20 for two tiny ketchups (or give them out for free depending how good looking you are?), right next to an extremely noisy fan or generator. It’s fine. Not out of this world amazing like the reviews suggest. Bit bland - dare I say?

Wouldn't say this is the best Fish & Chips I've had. It was okay. In terms of quality, not value for money in my opinion. My local chippy back in Birmingham serves much better quality. Portion size was okay, as the regular Cod & Chips filled me up. Condiments & sides aren't cheap either. 60p for standard tartar sauce. At the prices they charge, it should come free. Would I return? Definitely not. Even with high reviews, Brighton must have better. WARNING! Watch out for those Seaguls.

This is a good spot if you’re looking to sit in and enjoy some food and drink in view of the pier. Menu is a bit on the pricey side but is about the same as the alternatives and is made up for by decent portions, a pleasant atmosphere and quality service

The burger is really bad and awful, which really ruined my day! It had no salad and a very small amount of sauce and warm beer 😕 In my opinion, only fish and chips are acceptable and nothing else was good.

Captains is a great place for fish and chips. The staff are super friendly and serve efficiently and with a smile - Jay was particularly a good server. Delicious fish and chips and a nice elevated seating area to sit!

Down from Birmingham for business meeting in Brighton and fancied good old fish and chips on the seafront. Lovely food with a nice Moretti and very friendly and polite staff.

To get by and little else, we got off the bus and ended up seeing it and eating there. Typical fish and chips but low quality compared to others I have tried. I wouldn't eat there again unless there was no other alternative.

Whenever in Brighton, we always pop here for cod bites and chips and usually love it. Today something was going very wrong indeed! Poor training, new or tired and fed up staff I am unsure, but it wasn’t a nice experience. The inside dining area was empty, so we decided to sit inside to avoid the seagulls. We were immediately asked to move seats from a double table to a single table. I enquired about table service (as per advertised on the door) and the response was “no way, we do not offer table service, that would be impossible.” We queued outside at the kiosk where the operation seemed pretty chaotic. Rather than taking an order number, they were using names. When the food was ready, they would scream the customers name out in such an impatient and aggressive tone. It was uncomfortable. When one particular customer was screamed at, they seemed a little confused and wondered why the food wasn’t being brought to the table. Upon the customer gesturing he thought the food would be brought to him, the man working in the kiosk aggressively pointed his finger and him and then pointed his finger at the desk and shouted “NO. YOU COME HERE NOW” I was so shocked. When customers orders were handed over, sometimes the food would be served on trays if there were multiple meals to be taken to the table. The customers were asked to bring the trays back immediately before eating the food. Was very poor all round. The portion sizes were good (I couldn’t finish it) the food was tasty, but was super greasy, it had not been drained sufficiently once out of the fryer. The prices seemed steeper than I remembered. We paid £36 for two cod bites and chips and two soft drinks. The location is great and if you sit outside the view is fantastic, but still, I don’t think that warrants the extortionate price. No napkins or cutlery available (just a wooden fork) which didn’t help with the excess grease! The toilets were unpleasant too. After witnessing such poor service today, we have decided we probably won’t return when next in Brighton.

We were visiting Brighton and see this fish and chip shop along the beachfront! The food smelt amazing!!!🤩 we both had cod and chips and it was probably the best bit of fish I’ve had in a while! So fluffy and the batter was crispy how it should be!!! Would defo visit again!! The staff were very busy but still kept smiles on their face and were polite!

Are veggie burger and chips here. £22.50. The amount of chips could fit in the the palm of my hand. The veggie burger was cheap quality and made slap dash with hardly any care. Despite dining in you still pay 60p for all satches of sauce. We had to ask for serviettes, water etc. inside was full of boxes piled everywhere, whilst the owner snacked behind the open kitchen. The white guy ordering the food was nice and friendly apart from that it was all poor. I’d highly recommend NOT eating here. It was awful! It was all about the money and zero about the customers for the owners!

The food was just chip shop standard! The service was terrible, food was forgotten and my friends son was left without a meal for sometime. Finally when able to get someone’s attention they were able to correct the mistake. I don’t understand how a place like this is able to make mistakes! Wasn’t even busy. Really puts me off going back.

The batter was cute, and the service was friendly, but the fish and chips were simply not it. Tasted liked microwaved frozen food. The fish cakes were especially awful. Do not recommend. Save your stomach space for something else.

We came to Brighton for my birthday and popped into Captain's for lunch. I'm so glad we did! We had lovely sausage and chips and very reasonably priced too. The lady who I believe owns the business was so lovely. She heard it was my birthday from my husband and gave me a pot of ice cream and a cuddle! Lovely place 😊😊

I read great reviews about the eatery but the food was sadly disappointing. While the fish had a good batter , the chips were soggy and unsalted . Definitely not worth 14 pounds

The food was absolutely disgusting, I ordered a cheeseburger and it tasted absolutely awful the meet wasn’t even real meet , there was too much sauce and it just tasted like ketchup. I also ordered fish and chips, it was better but still. We had to pay £1.60 for small portion of mayo and ketchup. Overall I had such a bad experience in there however the service was perfect.

The real issue is not service, but the serious lack of toilet facilities for women. The one toilet available for us is also the disabled toilet and baby change. The queue was almost past the bar.

Although pricey the fish and chips are excellent quality. The service is very efficient. For drinks it’s table service, for food you collect when they shout your name. A special shout out to Pam, who kindly replaced a drink I split, which made our day. Perfect place to enjoy a classic!

Very freshly made fish & chips. Did not feel oily at all and the staff put right amount of salt on vinegar on it. Myself & my husband loved it so much that we will drive to Brighton to enjoy it again!

Had such an amazing experience, Pam ensured that we were taken care of by the rest of the lovely staff. Friendly customer service. Food was delicious, fish was soft and airy and chips were just right (they even offer free refills for the chips). Will definitely be coming back!
