Fish was massive and I found it really tasty. I personally enjoyed the chips (with sauce). By itself it was okay and can understand it's not for everyone. You get refillable chips for no extra charge and that's a dream. Staff were lovely and attentive

Probably the best fish and chips in Brighton! Had cod, chips, and mushy peas, a chocolate fudge ice cream desert, and a beer. The staff team were brilliant.

Food was lovely and a great spot to sit on. But pricey as you have to pay quite alot for sauce and Drinks but overall a nice treat.

Absolutely delicious! The fish was crispy on the outside and firm and juicy inside – perfectly cooked. The chips were great, and the cold beer made everything better. Friendly owner and cozy vibe. 5 stars, no doubt!

Visited today for my father's 91st birthday. The staff is very pleasant and wished my father a happy birthday, gave him a complimentary ice cream to wish him well. Will return as the customer service was spot on for us as our first time here. Thank you, keep up the good work.

I am not one to leave reviews but I visited captains fish and chip shop the other day after a long journey from Manchester, and honestly, it was a mixed bag. The fish and chips themselves were decent enough, nothing to write home about, but they hit the spot for me and my starved husband. However, the whole experience was totally soured by the way the lady who I can only presume was the manager judging by the captains hat treated her staff. She was constantly barking orders and being super rude to the young kids working there. It made the whole atmosphere super uncomfortable. You could tell the young staff were trying there best and may I add actually were super lovely and helpful – no complaints about them at all. I get that managing can be stressful (me also being in a managing role ), but there's no need to be so unpleasant to your employees especially in front of customers. It totally ruined my meal and left a bad taste in my mouth, way worse than any dodgy batter ever could.

Food was great and the servers were really attentive and nice, and helped explain things easy!

Rude I just wanted to use the toilet after having a drink at 21:20 but they declined saying we had the whole time .After spending my money and time the least they could have done is to let me use the washroom so inhuman

We came to 42 to eat the famous fish and chips and we weren't disappointed. Everything went very smoothly, thanks to Pam and her team. Nice view, good food P.S.: She was right, a large portion is a bit too big for kids/teens.

Had a lovely fish and chips here this evening! Staff were so lovely and helpful! Food was delicious, it was so fresh and hot and we had unlimited chips and the staff kindly reminded us to make sure we didn’t miss out if we wanted more! The curry sauce is the best I’ve had! Highly recommend. Lovely atmosphere in the restaurant and there is outdoor seating on the sea front available too! Food is presented so nicely! 10/10.

Tried many fish and chips along Brighton seafront, by far this is our favourite. Fish is thick and white, the batter was lovely and crispy and not all greasy, the chips were what we call proper chips with no tiny bits you can’t even get your fork in. Very reasonably price, totally recommend. Oh and forgot to mention we sat outside in the boat shaped seating area and the seagulls didn’t come near at all, which surprised us😂

Really kind service that went beyond expectations and really helped make our day. We were in Brighton for the day to celebrate our daughter's first birthday. Captain's is really well located for a bit to eat and a drink in the sunshine after visiting the pier. We'd just about finished our delicious fish and chips when the lady working there (I think the owner/manager) came to clear our table and we had a chat about our day. When we said it was our daughter's first birthday her eyes lit up and offered our kids an ice cream. We stayed for an extra drink and not only did the lady bring both our daughters a free ice cream bit even gave them a bubble wand as a gift. What an unexpected surprise and such a welcome bright note on what can be a long day with kids! The service was friendly and warm from all other team members while we were there and would thoroughly recommend.

Fantastic food cooked to perfection. Lovely lady called Pam who was very attentive and made sure everything was well. Enjoyed the cocktails very much and had the most delicious waffle for desert. Absolutely would recommend if your down in brighton!

A proper good chippy! (From a local). Was a bit worried it would be a tourist trap. Far from it. Fresh, flavourful and a very fair price. We will be back!

Bank holiday Monday lunch, lovely food and staff

I’ve been twice now. Great location right on the seafront, perfect for a relaxed bite by the sea. The staff are super friendly and laid-back, which makes the whole experience even better. The setup is simple – order at the counter and choose whether to take away or dine in, either inside or out. Portion sizes are generous and everything’s cooked fresh to order – I’ve never waited more than 15 minutes. The cod is thick, flaky, and perfectly cooked. Chips are just right, and the curry sauce and mushy peas are top-notch – everything complements each other beautifully. Massive thanks to Pam and the team – always a pleasure! I’ll definitely be back.

If anyone is thinking of eating here by yourself I would say AVOID!!! I don’t know if it was because I was on my own or if it was because of me wearing my disability lanyard or if the server just didn’t like me but as soon as I asked for a table the female server who then looked me up and down with disgust then told me to pay for my food outside first before she’d let me inside to eat. Only when I finally got a table I noticed Many costumers arriving to get tables and she was so nice to them and straight away seated them with a menu never asked anyone else to pay up front first. Whether it was classism or a ableism is to be argued however there was no need to treat me like that or anyone for that matter. Also the food was overdone and greasy honestly there are better chippies in London and thats saying something. Do better please.

To the manager: I strongly recommend implementing a basic paper ticketing or receipt-based system. Your current method of calling out names—like a Starbucks—simply doesn’t work reliably, especially when orders go missing or get taken by the wrong person after long waiting times. You've invested in flashy tablets, but unfortunately, the fundamentals are lacking. In my case, someone named "Nora" collected what turned out to be my order, which was apparently ready after 15 minutes. Despite your staff calling her name repeatedly even an hour later, no one thought to question why one guy—me—had been standing there for 35 minutes while everyone else had come and gone. How does nobody put two and two together? GenZ need a little more guidance and education and looks like there's not enough of it from you as the boss. I also noticed many customers placing orders at the counter and then heading outside to sit at tables, completely unaware that their name would only be called from the counter. To make matters worse, every so often someone comes outside to the tables shouting names to serve food and drinks, which just adds to the confusion. Customers assume that everyone will be called this way. The signage does nothing to help. If you approach the counter from the right side, there's no indication that table name-calling is only used for those who ordered through the left-hand "Table Orders" side. The whole process is clunky, unclear, and frustrating. And while you're at it—a little kick in the fish batter wouldn't hurt. Something like cayenne, perhaps? For £25, you could do a lot better on both service and flavour.

Always head here when in Brighton, simply the best fish and chips, cooked to perfection.

Pam was fantastic. We had a long cycle and she was so accommodating- finding us a place to sit with our bikes. Great fish and chips, although a little on the expensive side but that’s to be expected given location!

Went here yesterday on a very sunny afternoon with my partner and sisters. We got large cod and chips, saveloy and scampi and I can tell you this is the best fish and chips outlet by the beach. You will see a lot along the seaside and this one is the best one. Please go to this one!

Scampi was delicious, and the location is great, on the beach and right near to the pier. All the staff were friendly and attentive, especially the lady who owns the place; when she found out we were on a hen do she brought over a lil something for the bride to be! Thank you again!

There's not much more you could ask for here other than some delicious cod and chips with salt and vinegar by the seaside in the sun. Despite the large amount of customers, the staff were able to quickly take orders and serve the food in a reasonable amount of time. It's a little on the pricier side, but that's the tax you get from a tourist enticing spot in one of the country's biggest tourist spots. Definitely worth a try - I have to recommend their classic cod fillet and chips.
