Food is fine but order by phone two weeks then waiting 15 minutes, then today tried on phone for 30 minutes always busy, just got a Pizza, not enough staff probably

The food, staff and shop are all lovely. Unfortunately like everywhere the price has gone up, and the portion sizes have gone down. I've just unwrapped my meal and the fish a lot smaller, and hardly any chips. It was the same lovely quality, but I was taken aback by the smaller size.

We found the Dib Lane branch just before Christmas and we’re now weekly visitors. The service is good and the young man cooking the food knows his stuff as everything is cooked just so. I don’t know how he does it but the batter on the fish is always crisp but the fish isn’t dried up at the ends, as you often get elsewhere. One major bonus as far as I’m concerned is that they use dripping here for frying instead of flavourless oil. It makes a big difference to the overall taste.

I know the price of fish, potatoes and oil has gone up and these guys are trying to keep their prices down but the last couple of fish I got from here looked like they had starved to death. Tried to order a special or a fish cake to compensate knowing the fish was small but they had run out.

for money is rubbish. £3.50 for large chips that were anything but large and were soggy and old. I get times are hard for businesses but they are for working people too and so I hate when you get fleeced for something as basic as potatoes. Not wasting money here again.

I have never been disappointed having visited the Chapel Allerton shop many times. Great quality fish and chips. I often order a special which is always well-cooked and a generous size. I would rate these as some of the best fish and chips I've ever had bar none!

Used to really love this place, however, the last few times I've visited the fish has been the smallest portion and is mostly made up of grease. There is no crunch to the batter, and the portions sizes are inconsistent, my fish was what I would expect for £9, my partners however, I think they must have given him a child fish, that or they had spare lunch time specials they needed rid of. Said I wouldn't go back after the last time, but this time i mean it. I will take my business elsewhere for my weekly fish and chips. Think some of the staff have lost their drive to deliver quality food.

The smallest piece of Haddock and the chip portion matches. Overall I can’t comment on the price because it was delivered, but had I been collecting, I would have taken it straight back

Really good fish and chips, fish cakes,fish bits for children who wont eat a full portion. Ate haddock and chips at the Magpie at Whitby last week and they were 3 times the price and half as good as Captain Thornton's. Must be the cleanest chip shop in England. A pleasure to buy there. Five years later, post COVID and I'm back again. Nothing much has changed..that is still excellent haddock and chips... we've eaten fish and chips in Sunderland, Newcastle, Staithes and Whitby and this Capt Thornton's is the best.

Just bought fish and chips it's gone down hill the dib lane one absolutely disgusting greasy under cooked and the oil tasted like long life oil nasty wasted my money won't be going back again

Really love this place. I rarely eat Fish and Chips as I generally find it too greasy, thats never happened from here. This place is a real family favourite. My folks insist on a visit here when they come to Leeds "it is the best fish shop" that is accolade indeed as they love a fish supper! Children's fish bite meals are great from here too. Staff alway lovely with quick service even when busy :)

Just recently started using this place, we just buy fish and sometimes mushy peas,(we don't care for chips) the fish is excellent ! and always freshly cooked to order, we like to sit in the car and eat it,best way.. straight out of the pan ! Lovely !!

Ordered through Uber Eats, picked up myself. Quality is OK, fresh with reasonably crispy batter on the fish. But these have got to be the smallest portions of fish in North Leeds. Try Frydays or Portside, at least a third more for your money.

10/10 fish and chips and always ready on time. We place approx a 15 person order at least once a month and not one person has ever been disappointed. Try them for yourself and see 😊

Went here for 2 special for tea and I would like to say, cooked to perfection glad I didn't get chips as the special was a very good size and barely managed to finish it. Staff were smart in there uniform and very pleasant. Will definitely be making this my first choice for fish and chips. Thank you Captain Thorntons for a lovely fish supper.

I ordered 2specials 1 portion of chips and a small peas. I fish was a special the other was an ordinary size in my opinion.The chips were a minute portion and cold . An eye watering £21.95. Will never go again. Its not the first time.I have been ripped off

Been visiting here for many years. Fish and chips have always been nice but lately the size of the fish is not much bigger than a battered sausage. £19 for twice and one small curry is not worth it.... We will be reluctant to spend any more money here...

If this review had been made 6 or 8 months ago then I'd given it a 5 stars. Never had a bad meal from these champs. OK the prices have gone up, which is expected as C.O.L.C has taken its toll. But why has the quality and quantity been dropped? I can't help but feel unsatisfactory about the meal I've had. Just not the same quality and quantity. I'm not begrudging the portion size but I more concerned about the quality. Prices have gone up but its unjustified to cut quality and reduce the quantity too. From a 5 to a 3. Still a good chippy. Nothing in the area to compete with so no pressure. Make sure you ask for slate and vinger as its seldom offered before its wrapped up.

The fish, batter and chips were excellent quality and VERY tasty but...the size of the fish was seriously unbelievable! One end measured about two centimeters and the other about five! The tiniest fish we have EVER been served! And at £20.20 for twice and two small peas, we were VERY disappointed. Bought from here for twenty years...but will certainly think twice prior to returning. We were too tired to photograph or return (hence the takeaway meal!), but the fish was intentionally placed in those boxes blatantly without conscience. Hard times for all yes, but the way to lose custom. Such a shame.

Tried to order for delivery a few times an wasn't able to place an order as nobody answered!

Firstly, must say - the Fish & Chips are always nice, without fail. However, in past few months, fish have become notably smaller than they were previously, still nice though, so we usually buy twice a week, sometimes more. As they recently increased their prices (again! - 2nd increase in 12 months), I looked at what the price was 12 months ago. My order (which hasn’t changed), was £11.60 in July 2021 - Now, the same order, albeit with smaller fish, costs £16.05! That’s a 38% increase on this time last year, even though the portions are smaller. I’m aware that we all have cost of living issues, and that inflation is fast approaching 10%, but a 38% increase is extortionate. As such, we’ll go elsewhere from now on. Nice fish, good service, nice staff, but becoming a rip off…Now more expensive than Murgatroyds, even though their fish are twice the size and just as tasty!

Spent £6 on small fish and chips but needed a small ketchup for 35p. I only had 25p in change and a couple of £20 notes that I didn’t want to break for the sake of 10p. When I asked if they could let me off 10p for the ketchup the woman at the counter refused which was a big surprise seen as I just spent £6. Fish and chips were also nothing special, curry sauce was watery and smelled strange.

Normally I order Chapel Allerton over the phone. They ask what time and they are ready. Not today. I might as well not ordered standing waiting in the cold.

This is usually the best fish n chip shop in Leeds imho, but very disappointed in my last visit. 20 minutes wait for the order to be cooked/served. I get cooking to order/reducing waste etc but this was at 5.30pm. I could understand if it’s near to closing time but this is a very busy shop so I’d have expected them to be more prepared. The fish was delicious as usual but looked like a battered sausage, totally cylindrical, all 5 fish were like this. The chips were hot but very pale and soft. It wasn’t the usual fryer (think he must be working at the new Chapel A shop), so hopefully things will improve by my next visit.

Some of the best fish and chips I've ever had - and that's including those that seem to taste better when you're by the coast. I'm not really a fish-in-batter lover, they don't sell pies so I tried the fish and I'm so glad I did. Freshly cooked while you wait, tastes amazing. A limited menu but what's on it comes highly recommended by me.

I have expected better considering all good reviews on here. Fish and chips are soooo greasy it's like having vegetable oil shots, especially the chips. I don't know if it's the kind of potato you use, the way you fry it, the oil or something else, but it's almost inedible.

We have been going here for the last few year's and never been disappointed. Prices have increased but that's the case everywhere. I am off tonight again for some of the best and freshest fish and chips I have had.

Fish and chips were really greasy staff were rude never told us to get our own pop when we ordered 2 x cans of pop so when we looked in the bag they weren't there we rang them up to complain and the lady was really rude chips were stone cold I think they had come out of the fridge I wouldn't recommend this fish and chip shop to anyone what a load of rubbish

Captain Thorntons recently opened a branch in Chapel Allerton, Leeds7, home to many overpriced and pretentious eateries, so I was astounded by the quality, value and quantity, and have gone there regularly since. A large, thick, superfresh haddock in a light crisp batter, cooked freshly to perfection, perfect light brown chips, slightly crispy on the outside, generous portion served by a delightful young team who genuinely like their customers- what's not to like. A lifetime connoisseur of the delightful dish, I cannot remember when I found a better takeaway meal. I'm hooked on their fish!

Just average neighbourhood chippy . Polite staff , average prices , average portion( fish slightly small ) . Batter had good flavour, but not crispy enough for me ( I ate in the car outside )

Bit expensive for the portion sizes, compared to other places nearby. The fish are quite small. No organisation for queuing system with covid rules, so waiting outside tends to be a mess, with people jumping through the queue

we got fish and chip 3 times the batter was under cooked soggy chips raw. the fryer need to be retrained we had to finish them off in the oven

Went here after reading reviews on here ,phoned them on leaving work and when I arrived from a shortish drive from Seacroft hospital my order was ready in and out in the blink of an eye . The fish I had was white and chunky encased in a golden crispy batter delicious

Me and my sister get our tea here regularly as we both work shifts it’s ideal, tried many other places but nothing compares to how good this place is, always even nicer when the owner (James) is frying himself.

I went to captain Thornton's for the first time on Friday 19th June 2020. They have got an excellent collection service, you ring place your order they give you a time slot to collect and they call your name can pay cash or card. Also do deliveries too. The food was excellent lovely white fish and not greasy good size portions and good value for money. Would recommend and I will be back again. The staff very friendly and helpful. Thank you👍😀

We had fish and chips from here for the first time while in lock down. The service was excellent and efficient and the fish and chips were amazing. We ordered a Spacial and it was that big it filled the box Highly recommended .
