We are on holiday and fancied some chips we had scampi and chips and pie and chips and the chips were disgusting they were over cooked and tasted like they had been cooked an hour ago nearly twenty pounds wasted it all went straight in the bin 🤮

Went on a Friday evening, looking forward to a lovely meal, as per previous visits. We ordered ahead (perhaps not the best thing?) and got the driest chips I’ve ever had. Such a shame.

Had a delivery on Halloween evening from a lovely cheerful lady even though the weather was bad. The food was still hot, delicious cod, the best chips and the kids enjoyed the sausages. Fantastic friendly service. Highly recommend. Thank you.

We ordered a home delivery fish & chips for two. The order came 20 minutes early, which was inconvenient. The fish was good, but the chips were hard and dry and very small. They did not taste fresh and we left most of them. We will be trying another in future.

Difficult to review. My most recent experience was poor. Fishcakes getting less and less fishy and more and more potatoey. At £2.50 each, they should be very good. Chips are generally not bad tasting, but look tired. On other occasions, I have had excellent cod from here. If disappointed, it us pointless to ring.... your meal experience has been and gone, been pleasant or unpleasant. You cannot then relive it. On the whole, The Priory Fryer is better. But it is expensive and certainly not 100% reliable .

Ordered Large Cod and regular chips. Waited 20 minutes not a problem. Took meal down to Riverside, the box containing the fish was swimming in grease, the fish batter was dark brown and hard and the Cod inside was flat gray and dry totally overcooked. The Chips were hard and dark brown and didn't taste of potato, very odd. Ordered Lemon for the fish and Salt and Vinegar for the chips got neither an absolute disaster which ended up in the bin!

Visited here midweek as our usual one was a drive away and we were passing. Ordered a jumbo cod, large chips and a pea fritter. Cod wasn’t particularly Jumbo unfortunately, more of a large in other places and had quite a bit of excess batter. Chips were quite soggy and limp. Pea fritter was good. Would visit again if in a bind but wouldn’t travel for it specifically.

A great shame we ordered a meal last night Friday 18/11/22 for 19.30, had to ring up, was told it was on it's way, eventually it arrived at 19.45 the young girl apologised for our meal being so late. By the time I had walked from our Kitchen to our Lounge and opened up the bags we found the Fish, Chips, Saveloys, cheesy sticks were all cold and very greasy, the apple pies were not only very greasy but inedible. A complete waste of money. The ice cream was frozen so was great. Sadly, we will not be a Returning Customer ever we shall have to look for somewhere else that delivers. I sent in a complaint last night and I have not had the courtesy of a reply.

Fish was so over done the batter was like an over cooked crisp . Chips also was so over cooked and dry they had no potato inside that was edable! Discusting isn't the word.! Never ever again Avoid

On Friday evening 7/10/2022 I purchased a large cod & chips. On arrival at home it tasted and looked old and disgusting. To me it looked like chips were yesterday’s chips and the cod was so flaky and tasteless. I know what fresh fish tastes like and this definitely wasn’t fresh. Captain Cod you would have to pay me to darken your doorstep again. I have tasted better in 3rd world countries. Never again.

We hired the Captain Cod van for a Scout Family Camp in the New Forest for around 150 people Service pre the event was excellent and nothing too much trouble. On the evening the Van arrived promptly, and it was service with an absolute smile and the feedback from the families was all great. Lovely light batter on the fish Such a lovely idea for a big event or a wedding - would highly recommend.

Just had the best fish and chips we have ever had. Enjoyed the £9 family deal for 4 battered sausages and 2 large chips, plus £6 for cod. Fed 3 of us with loads left over. Would have fed 4. Incredible well cooked chips and...

Really disappointing I’m afraid. The service was great - pleasant, polite and a speedy home delivery. The chips were fine but the cod was over cooked. One of us actually had hardly any fish inside a thick, dark brown batter. Sorry to be so negative.

Picked up a takeaway last night, positives the chips were good, pea fritter good and curry sauce good…..scampi less so. £5.20 for 8 small bits, was very disappointed indeed. Shame really. Won’t be going back!

We where staying at hotel just round the corner. We wanted a cheaper meal one night and found this great take away.

First order from CC for months. Normally fair but not the best in town. This time the dogs ate our fish it was that poor. Brown, mushy, in overcooked batter that looked like it had been cooked in old oil.On the good side - their chips are the best in town - triple cooked.I did call the owner who offered to replace FOC but going back for more is not the answer for us.

Previous take away a few weeks ago was really good. But unfortunately last night's delivery wasnt good. The website gives you a choice of delivery times. We chose a time to suit us where my husband would be back from work and my baby could eat dinner with us. However they attempted to deliver 25 minutes earlier which meant fish and chips waiting and getting cold for 25 minutes. Who wants cold food? Why give us a delivery time when you deliver at your convenience not the customers? I sent it back and called the shop. They said because of covid they deliverer in batches. That doesn't help us. When it was redelivered a portion of chips and 5 sauces was missing and it was cold. Plenty of other small business needing support, we will go to another f & c shop next time, did not like their attitude either.

Ordered online for collection 1 cod, 2 plain sausage, 1 cod roe and 1 portions of chips, got to shop and ordered an additional portion of chips and paid for. Was given order some time later, got home unwrapped and found 1 cod seriously over-cooked batter fell off when touched with cutlery, 2 plain sausage, 1 cod roe, 1 battered sausage, 1 portion chips and 1 bag of goodness knows what, looked like scampi but covered in same over-cooked batter as cod and contained minute particles of fish? Please at least concentrate on getting orders correct, we’ve just thrown food away, shame as not cheap. Not coming back.

Captain cod serves great fish and chips and has been here for us throughout the whole of lockdown with a delivery service. The fish and chips are always delivered fresh and hot and the curry sauce is great! Very reliable and we always look forward to fish and chips Friday.

I stand corrected as to ownership of this now excellent fish and chip shop. However, the experience is very different from the way it was, say, a year ago. Went again this evening and the fish, chips and sausage I ordered were as good as any I have had anywhere. Truly delicious. Well done, the Captain Cod team.

Stopped of here after a visit to the beach, the BEST fish and chips I've ever had, the chips were perfect. So glad we found this fish and chip. Will know next time when we go the the beach, great price as well. Lovely friendly service as well.

I have previously written poor and half-hearted reviews for Captain Cod. I am told by my guesthouse-owner that it is under new ownership. It shows! The fish and chips is now of excellent standard. Sausages are very good quality. I shall always come here now that I know this... no need to walk into Christchurch town, as I had got into the habit of doing. If you preorder by phone or online, the order will be correct and ready for you when you arrive. Card payments only during CoVid. Recommended.

Used to be my favourite, sadly wont be coming back. Ordered on the app which is brilliant and gives you a collection time. Monday evening, while outside waiting although there are signs saying order on the app or website only, lots of people just turning up and ordering and getting half price because of EOTHO. When they questioned the eating in part, they were told they were supposed to eat outside on their chairs and tables outside by the road but that the staff were not going to make them! So dont bother ordering before hand on a monday - wednesday as you wont get 50% off, just turn up. The food itself was very greasy, even the children commented on this and no one ate much of their fish, my Plaice was not very nice at all. Really disappointed in many ways.

Delicious meal, very impressed. Ordered through the website and collected which was very easy. Fish was perfectly cooked and we loved the pea fritter which was something new to us. Chips crispy and not at all greasy. Would recommend to anyone in the area.

Ordered a large cod and large chips and got a very nice large sized cod and a generous portion of chips. Collected and it was ready and waiting for me at the time specified (15 minutes after the order was placed). A lovely smile from the lady serving me and a lovely meal. What more could I ask for :-)

One star for the tasty food, no stars for the delivery (1 hour late) and the fact the food was cold. The only way to order is online, paying in advance (that’s OK) but if it’s late, no-one answers the phone so you can check whether it is going to arrive at all (not OK).

I was told by a few friends to try this chippy and I expected some good results however my order was 45 Minutes late from the ETA and the "Large" Cod portion for just under £6, was very disappointing. It was small and incredibly greasy.

We knew that by ordering fish and chips on a very warm sunny Friday evening was going to be busy and therefore that we would have to wait. So on ordering online (the only way you can order) we were given a delivery slot for an hour later. There is no option when calling the restaurant to speak to anyone so, after a two hour wait, I decided to drive down to the restaurant myself to see what was going on. On arrival I was told that the food had already been dispatched and that the road closure their premises was on was causing them delays. No hint of an apology. I said it was disappointing that there was no way you could speak to an actual person to try and find out what was going on, or that with a fully automated ordering system there was no way of being sent an update on the progress of your order. I was told that they respond via Facebook in minutes. Well, how are we meant to know that? It doesn't say that on their recorded message, the confirmation of the order that arrives by email or their website. Once I returned home we still had to wait for the food to arrive, despite the fact that the delivery van (well it was a taxi) had already been dispatched. When the food did arrive we noticed we were then short of two people's orders. Contacting them via Facebook, now that we knew this was what was required, we were told that the additional orders would be dispatched immediately. Again, no hint of an apology. The missed orders arrived just as everyone else was finishing their food, so what was meant to be a lovely family treat during lockdown turned into a disaster. What makes it galling is that the food was actually good, but the poor service and lack of any obvious way of communicating with the restaurant reflects the rating we have given. And I thought technology was meant to improve and facilitate these sort of dining experiences - it did precisely the opposite.

My family and I used the app to pre order our dinner for tonight. The app was very easy to use and we were very pleased with the value, especially as we expected a delivery fee. (Delivery was free)We were pleasantly surprised that the fish and chip shop was open for delivery and enjoyed sitting up together with our two young children for a good old fish and chip supper. The food was very delicious and good portions. The children’s meals came with a drink and a cute designed box and large ketchup satchels. It arrived exactly at the stated time of delivery!We would like to say a big Thankyou for making our evening seem ‘normal’. Small businesses need to stick together during these complex times and well done to Captain Cod for staying open and working so hard. I understand that you are working with minimal staff but standards were still high. Emma x

I’ve known Vicky and captain cod for few years and food is amazing and haven’t had in a while and I really enjoyed the food, my favourite place to go for all time. She is doing amazing during this time, came before my delivery time and will keep ordering from captain cod.

Visited recently to collect Fish and Chips for dinner. Ordered Haddock rather than the standard Cod. I was very impressed with the quality of the cooking and the taste. I'd heard from others that this was seen as one of the better Fish and Chip shops in the area and that is now certainly my view too. I certainly plan to go back!

I appreciate it so much that you are providing a service to people despite having to do this solo due to keeping your staff safe. I am absolutely appalled at the recent comment made regarding a missing milkshake! Please ignore such stupidity from small minded ignorant people who obviously quite clearly haven't a clue how a business is run during 'trying' times. Cold chips? Maybe they expected you to provide an oven to go with them?!Honestly! Let's hope they have time to re-think their stupid comments and apologise for their very immature and naive behaviour. We used the app last night to order and wow what a service. We are not the easiest to please.My hubby has glutin free due to health reasons and he had plenty to choose from and it was all hot and crispy as it should be. Kids had kids meals and felt happy as they came in special boxes with abit of entertainment on. And me well I was happy with hot lovely food I didn't have to cook, wash up and was delivered to my house on time and hot. Fab job keep goingWe will be back again soon.

ordered knowing delivery time would be long as we are in a really unusual situation with covid 19, the delivery took an hour and 25 mins which I totally understood. The food was delicious and warm, I always have fish chips and curry sauce and it was equally as delicious as before, it must be very difficult to deal with such high demand and I think this shop are doing a fantastic know job, I think it’s a shame In the face of all of this people are leaning such negative comments and claiming the weekend has been ruined by a missed item???... in these unusual times captain cod is coping really well, just needs people to use it with a realistic expectation of delivery times, I would say use the app to order I did try to call but they didn’t answer which is totally understandable as they are so busy, Captain cod is a high standard takeaway I have used it every week since I was a child and will always do so, well done guys keep up the hard work. I made an order through the online app and although (understandably) they were busy during these extraordinary times, the food arrived nearly 1 hour and 20 minutes later. The chips were not even hot and were so brittle and overcooked, just overall very poor quality. Furthermore, they missed an item off the order (milkshake) and by the time I realised, I tried to contact Captain Cod numerous times, but there was never any answer or the phone was constantly engaged...so I paid for something that I never received!

Food was very greasy and chips over done. The cod was very dry inside and stuck to batter. I used to visit here more thsn 5 years ago snd was always very good. But not woth the money anymore the service snd quality has gone down hill massively. Such a sh5sme to a beautiful area

A colleague recommended this fish and chip shop to me so I thought I’d give it a go. I ordered a Large Cod and small chips. The cod was cooked fresh and I couldn’t wait to get back to my hotel to eat it. When I opened the box I was horrified. The chips were very nice but the Cod actually looked like a lump of wood ! It was so over cooked the batter was hard. I had to get a steak knife to cut it and it was saturated in oil. I couldn’t eat most of the fish as it was hard and had far too much batter on it. This place is just as bad as Ashley’s in Southbourne Crossroads. You would think a seaside place like Bournemouth would have excellent fish and chip shops, this is the third one I have been to that’s Awful. In the end I threw the fish in the bin and ordered a Chinese Takeaway. Save your money and do the same.

Popped in tonight for chips and pea fritters for a quick tea after a busy day at work. There were people in front of me ordering and the ladies behind the counter were so lovely and knowledgable, guiding them to which items were suitable for gluten free etc.

Popped in for fish and chips for the family on our way home. The chips were ok but mainly over cooked. The fish had far too much batter although very tasty. On the plus side the portions were excellent.

Used to use this chippy before, in my opinion, the quality declined. Tried it again a couple of weeks ago and it was excellent. Superb cod -thick white flakey fish, crisp batter and very good chips. Today what a disappointment- tiny piece of fish mainly batter and chips were soggy with loads of tiny bits at bottom of bag. Sorry but wont be able to recommend now.

Very agreeable staff. As previously, I enjoyed the sausage(good quality) and chips (nicely cooked). The large cod looked good, but did not taste like cod - nor indeed any other fish I know. It just tasted vaguely fishy, and it was difficult to dispel the taste afterwards. I will give this place another try in a few months. Meanwhile, I shall stick with Bargates Fish and Chips.

I visited here on a spontaneous drive out to the New Forest from Oxford. We had struggled to find a chip shop which was actually open and from my previous experiences of fish and chips from home and away, I was sceptical. I was delighted to discover that they serve the good in cardboard boxes with breathing holes. White paper may be traditional, but inevitably results in a load of soggy mush. The fish tasted fresh with lovely textured batter and not the flat pancake mush which I am used to. The chips are as chips should be, crispy on the outside and fluffy in the middle. The vast majority of my fish and chip takeaways are a soggy disappointment, I thoroughly enjoyed our meal today, eaten at the sea front. A refreshing change. Will definitely be visit again when I am in the area. Fish and chip bliss. Warm and friendly service.

I have written two earlier unfavourable reviews for this place, and have avoided it ever since. However - good news! A visit yesterday because heavy rain prevented our going further afield revealed great chips and quality sausages. I will make another visit to see what the fish/fish cakes are like. Service yesterday was friendly and efficient. Very pleasing!

Well what can you say what could be better than a cold winters day and fish and chips by the seaside. I was walking by the harbour and asked a local were is the best fish and chips and they told me captain cod so I needed to visit and I wasn't dissapointed great welcome by the new manager told me about all there amazing plans for the shop after ordering a lightly battered cod and chips and the most amazing curry sauce I have ever tasted. The staff are amazing and the shop is amazingly clean so if you in christchurch please take my advice and goto this shop well worth the visit and if I am visiting again I will be definatly back thanks again for everything and wish you all the success for the future

Visited captain cod this week, what has happened? fresh new look and happy staff food to die for! All those that have written bad reviews could not have been served at the same place. Looks like new management you have to go back and try again for yourselves.

I was a frequent user of captain cod up until a while ago to my dismay it’s changed hands and the new captain has failed in there responsibility the fish was soggy not resembling cod in anyway! And children chips were from the night before. Disappointing beyond belief as I really rated this chip shop as the cod WAS the best in Christchurch but it’s gone right down hill sadly I spoke to the old owner and they took pride in quality fish not no more unfortunately

The chips were rubbery and cold, the batter was soggy and the mushy peas were really runny, it wasn't good at all. We got a full refund on returning to the shop. They do better fish and chips at the local hospital!

Went here on a Saturday afternoon and ordered a small portion of chips to take away. Chips were completely uneatable chewy rubbery subsequently threw the whole lot away. Should not be allowed to sell food like this.

Went here on a Saturday night one hour before closing to find they had no cod turned away several people as they had also run out of chips,this is supposedly a fish and chip shop! Wow!! First time at CC. 3 Cod and chips & Sausages and Chips. The Cod was huge, well cooked no taste of oil at all. The Chips tasted devine. What a spoiling.

Im sorry to write this but I didn't enjoy my meal at all. The cod I ordered was over cooked and the meat had dried out inside. The chips were ok. But I'll stick to the fish and chip shop I trust from now on.

We have been coming to Captain Cod for many years, we use to recommend them to everyone. Now sadly its dramatically gone down hill. The chips are always soft and soggy! We use to have Haddock, that became way to greasy! Moved on to battered sausage, the batter was soft not crispy at all. Final straw was to try the chicken burger. See photo - no salad given!? dry chicken in a stale bun, with way to much mayonnaise. Staff always polite but the food is awful now.

A once noble chipper that can't cook food any more, long waits and staff that never smile. Just for the locals gaining their loyalty points. It has gone down hill since its glory days. Expensive and bad at this moment in time.

Have been a regular at Captain Cod for number of years , honestly say always had great service and meals....the team have recently started to do a gluten free option for cooking - very beneficial as i am gluten intolerant . A++...very recommended !

I ordered 2 large cod and 2 regular chips plus mushy peas. The order taker took the wrong order and I was given 1 large chips instead of 2 regular - so I had to pay at the end and wait for the chips- ok a minor issue. When I arrived home some 10 minutes later, the cod was barely cooked and warm instead of hot inside and the worst thing was the chips were overcooked, hard and very greasy - a sign of overcooking. It was raining heavily and I had to drop my son at the station close by, but next time, I will go that extra mile and go to ones that I trust and have good reputations, one in Tuckton or Mudeford!

We pulled in here to pick up some food before we went to a local firework display. We both had a large sausage and chips, we also had some mushy peas. It did take a while to come but was cooked fresh. The chips were very good, full of potato and not just air! The sausage was great and the peas perfect. I will be back

We live very close. Every now and then we retry it to see if it gets better. It never does. There are lots of great f&c; shops nearby, my advice, go elsewhere! Captain cod takes forever (even if you just order chips!), the team look dirty in dirty yellow t-shirts, the fish is always overcooked and dry and the oil is clearly old / dirty as the fish is so dark. The only saving grace is the chips are good (because they over cook everything so the chips are nice and crispy!) we can never believe how busy this place always is! We live 2 mins walk from here but prefer to get in the car to go to the new priory fish bar in the high st or to Southbourne! If they cleaned the team and the oil and learnt how to cook it may be better....?!!

Had to wait about half an hour to get the food after such a long wait youd expect it to be warm. Saveloy ICE COLD! BATTERED SAUSAGE, if it was a sausage was about 1inch long pure white and STONE COLD! GRAVY!?! Resembled dirty dish water. poured it out and there was what looked like an old scab of congealed gravy in the bottom. Very off putting. I had to make some beans to add to my gritty chips. Ended up binning it all. The kids got chicken nuggets and they slowly ate them. Id drive back for a refund but itd probably cost more in petrol! AVOID AVOID AVOID! Hope I dont get the squits in the morning!

We have come here for years and it is still as good as I remember it!! The homemade fish cakes are lovely especially with lemon. Top and !!

I have stopped here on the way home from work over the last 3 years occasionally for fish and chips, and it has always been good food. Over the last few months the quality has gone downhill, but on the evening of Tuesday 22nd when I was waiting for my food the young girl serving me had to actually go and round up some kittens that had got loose in the back of the chip shop! Bloody awful!

Used Captain Cod on Tues 22nd around 6.30pm.Ordered 2 portions of cheesy chips you had to use a magnifying glass to see the cheese and the chips were overcooked dry and could well have been lunchtimes reheated.Having used this shop in the past we were very disappointed and somewhat alarmed at the massive fall in quality and will not be going back.

Standard of food has deteriorated in the last 3-5 months I'm really sorry to say. Sad I can't give more stars. Menu has increased with waffles, ice cream and other strange items now on it. We used to use Captain Cod's frequently but have now been converted to Fairmile Fisheries. A bit more expensive but really tasty and huge fish. Captain Cods chips are greasy and soggy, and what happened to the slice of lemon? They used to be really crispy and frankly the best fish & chips in Christchurch but not any more I'm afraid. Do they double fry them now?I don't know? Doesn't taste like it.The best advice I can give Captain Cods is for the owner to cut all the rubbish out of their menu and try the food they're currently serving.Go back to making simple food as you used to! Get it right and we'll be back!

Always go to this fish and chip shop. Always good quality and great portion sizes. The loyalty scheme which gets stamped every time you visit is also great. Friendly staff also. Wish it was open Sundays.

The fish n chips vary in quality, this is primarily due to the oil being too old, when you enter the shop it has an smell of stale oil, this is a shame as the quality of the fish is pretty good.I often can't eat the chips, because it tastes & smells stale. Shame as Captain Cod could be the best in the area!

Visiting Christchurch and felt like fish and chips.Saw this place had quite a few queing and thought it would be worth a try.What a mistake, fish was overcooked. The batter was dark brown the the fish inside had gone dry and tough.The chips were nothing special either. Service was good, all staff were pleasant and happy even though very busy.I Won't be going back though.

I called in for some lunch , only trouble was the oil is in need of changing , it left that oily ugg taste on what would have been excellent fish ans chips, i will go again if passing , but for sure send them back if its like that again .

On November 5th this chippy provided great 'fish n chips' and great service. The staff were quick, helpful and professional. Well done, you take the mantle of a great chippy.
