Captain Cod in Christchurch

A very disappointing fish and chip lunch, tasteless fish and reheated chips, what a shame.

The fish chips and fish cake were disgusting. The fish cake was inedible over fried batter and more potato in it than fish. The cod was a little better but the chips were the worse I have ever had. Most were full of black eyes some with skin on which was green, everything was so greasy and I’m sure that the fat hadn’t been changed. The fish cake and practically all the chips were thrown away. A total waste of £15

Old reliable local chippy. Friendly staff who are happily busy, as a bonus their cod is cod, not Pollack as is often the case these days.

Not the best this time, waited for over 20 minutes and chips weren't great at all

Looked quite popular from a glance so popped in to grab some chips, very dry and some of them even tasting stale

Fish and chips here are absolutely stunning. Only slight issue is salt is random. Today no salt, last time enough to grit the M3 in a blizzard, which ruined it. Happy with no salt as can always add but cant remove. The salt Russian Roulette aside i would highly recommend the fish and chips. Gorgeous.

It was my first visit to Captain Cod after moving here three years ago. Unfortunately it will be my last. The food was disappointing especially the chip's the fish was ok. The shop could also do with a update

Just picked up our dinner from Captain Cod and was absolutely great. The fish burger was very tasty and the onion rings were enormous. Best of all, we got to try the battered Brussel sprouts. What a treat! We also love the concept of paying forward - such a helpful idea in these hard times. Thanks Captain Cod for a lovely meal and such friendly service. When we are in the area we will be sure to visit again.

Worst fish and chips I have ever had. Fish was dry and over cooked battered sausage was not even battered. Chips were dry and over cooked.

Not sure if I've reviewed it before, but it's worth 2. Best chippy for miles. Phone ahead if you don't want to wait. Used them for years over 3 others that are nearer. Never had anything but great food so I think the negative reviews must have been really bad luck. The team in there seem to be on top of it and having fun, so there's a cheerful buzz going on even when they're busy. Still the best fish and best chips for miles. We ordered fish & chips for two on 19 Aug for delivery to 31 The Meridians at 1900. Three things: The delivery was 20 mins early. The chips were small, dry and tasted stale, lIke they had been hanging round for some time. There was no lemon. Not your usual standard. It was also expensive.

Every time we have Captin Cod the food is amazing. Every member of staff are friendly and deliver 10/10 customer service. We love coming here.

Have been coming to Captain Cod for years went again this week and received the usual amazing food and service, friendly staff and the owner Vicky is always so nice!. I am Gluten intolerant and there is much choice there, better than any other chippie, it’s great to not struggle to find something to eat!. It’s also spotlessly clean Keep up the great service and food!!!

The reason I gave only 1 star was my meal was really greasy and it tasted like the fat needed changing

Been here 4 times now since December 2022. Closed every time.

When I did receive my order there were a few items missing but I rang up and the lady who answered was very polite & friendly & said she’d have it sent out for me. On the other hand, I hadn’t ordered from Captain Cod for a while & forgot how good the quality of the food was. The chips I had were quality, crispy on the outside & fluffy on the inside, and for the cod I had that was absolutely gorgeous. I think from now, if I ever fancy fish & chips I’m gonna stick with ordering from here.

Service: Great. Menu easy to read. Food: Lovely. Never had battered chips before, probably won’t again but they were lovely, nothing to do with the quality here. Only suggestion would be to maybe tell customers before they order that you have an app, that way I can build up some loyalty points straight away. Other than that 5 stars.

The food is fine but their delivery driver called, significantly late, to ask how close I lived to a place over a mile away from me. When I suggested she used Google Maps or similar it was like showing fire for the first time to a caveman. When she did eventually arrive the food was unsurprisingly cold. In response to owner - I don't know why your information is incorrect but I have a date/time-stamped door camera recording of it being delivered at 6:45pm - perhaps your delivery person has as good a handle on time as they have on finding addresses. And the reason the review is one is one star is that the food was cold, if you expect better reviews of entirely cold food then you're going to be disappointed. Ultimately your choice of delivery person has failed your small business this time.

I just love captain cod!! Always visit when in the area some times you have to book as very busy.

This is second time we have ordered from here, first time they forgot 1 kids meal and tonight they forgot two curry sauces so definitely won't be ordering again and chips tonight were not that great

The food was good the experience not so. When we first entered there was a que which I thought was for people who had ordered. Turns out there was two ques one for the till and another for those who had ordered. Anyway I eventually got noticed and asked if I had ordered. Once orded they put my name on a receipt and I sat on some chairs outside the front of the shop. By some miracle I managed to hear the person shouting out my name. Anyway the food was good I just think the ordering needs to be a bit more streamlined.

Just edited my review as I felt my original was a bit harsh... We bought from here a few months ago a couple of times and was very impressed.... As its down the road and local we had a third order and was very disappointed.. Chips had quite a few 'scraps' and the fish tasted reheated.. Thinking it may be a one off we ordered again and unfortunately they could've been better.... I understand that businesses can get busy and staff are put under a bit of pressure to make customers happy but can't always please everyone.. Captain Cod have mostly good reviews so I would say that maybe my order was a one off... I will go back and try the place again..

Only visiting this area for a break. As we fancied fish and chips, we found Captain Cod. This meal was excellent, fish tender and tasty. Very recommended if not tried Captain Cod yet.

We have ordered online from here many multiple of times and I'm always impressed, delivery is fast and so it's always hot. The portions are generous and the food is always as we want it. When they do mess up, it's happened just once when we actually visited the shop, they were apologetic, delivered the missing item and threw in some extra chips. Can't argue about that.

Whoever is doing the frying tonight (4/3/22) is doing a super job! All six of us loved it and the gluten free batter was delicious!

Best fish and chips in this area! Had been using the fry Inn for 8 year's but have just found that place not being great in recent times. Captain cod cooked everything freshly and the chips are some of the best i have ever had. Team very efficient and friendly. Menu was fab! Had plaice,hake and even deep fired bakewell tarts. Love it that you can order scrapes. This is my new favourite chippy.

We’ve been getting our fish and chips (and the odd jumbo sausage) from here for about 2 years now. It is always good quality and enjoyed by all 😋 highly recommended 👍

Visited the area and had fish and chips with curry sauce. £9 in total. The fish was very small the batter very greasy. The fish was mushy and not flakey. The chips were tasty but not salt and vinegar and no salt and vinegar was offered just handed the bag all made up! Portion or chips was very small again. Curry sauce, such a simple thing I don’t know what happened. It was more a paste and had formed a skin on it and drier around the edges, maybe making them up in the individual tubs beforehand.

I've tried this place 3 times now. Once for just chips, which to be fair were quite tasty hence trying it two more times. 2nd time the chips were good again but the cod was over cooked. Third time (last night), 25% of the chips were over cooked, I guess they came from two batches, although my wifes chips looked fine. I'm not sure if it was Cod or rubber I was eating, so much so it ended up going to the dogs.

First time I visited Captain Cod . Fish n chips were great and it is was offer night. Definitely will return.

Best fish and chips in Southbourne.

First time ordering here, and I'm glad I did. I made a mistake with the order and contacted them and they got back to me straight away and corrected it! Food arrived on time, and was lovely. The only little thing I'd say is the food could've been kept heated as it wasn't that warm when we ate it (straight away) but it will not stop me ordering again! For the service and the food 10/10

Great portions and lovely chips

Ate from here a while ago was tasty. Just had another cod and chips and disappointed. Chips tasted like they were reheated and hard and fish was same, dark brown and over done. Tasted cold and damp.Won't go back.

Visiting the area and called in on spec at 5pm today. Best fish and chips I've had in ages and the pea fritters were amazing. Friendly welcome and lovely service from Vicky who made sure we had napkins as we were eating them in the park before driving home. Excellent portion sizes and beautifully cooked.

Great improvements made here! We had fish and chips from Captain Cod early in lockdown and it's fair to say they were struggling to say the least. Used them again recently and what great service. Very friendly and fish and chips were delicious. Well done to all at Captain Cod!

Well ........ I have this place a try as there were some unique food items to order. Battered brussel sprouts ..... this actually works and they were great . Battered banana chunks .... this actually works and they were also great. Battered chips .... no sorry , this was not good , stick to normal chips . Its worth a try but I would not rush back

After reading severel excellent reviews decided try fish and chips from here as i was driving past. Very pleasant staff and quick efficient delivery. However the worst fish and chips in the area. Unless you like it burnt and dehydrated to the point where there is no fish meat left inside the very dark and crunchy batter. Unfortunately the chips were the same dry burnt to a crisp and inedible. Will not return im afraid

Great fish and chips and great service We quite often have fish and chips from Captain Cod and we always thoroughly enjoy them The chips are great and the batter on the fish isn’t too thick but has a great crunch. During lockdown Captain Cod has provided a great service delivering when they said they would and the food always arrives hot. We certainly recommend Captain Cod.

reeally lovrly fish snd chips and no waithg all ready for me when i got there..

Great chip if you like them crunchy and with colour. Fish was also cooked beautifully again with good colour and texture to the batter. Took a bit longer than I was expecting but clear this is a popular spot. 20min wait for food but worth the wait. Cheesy chips with BBQ and bacon was a hit.
