Very welcoming atmosphere, food was very good value, and the range of beers and cider was excellent. The pub clearly had a lot of events on and seemed very popular with locals and visitors

Well what a find! We were looking for somewhere for drinks and with a play area for our son. From the minute we walked in we were welcomed by the lady behind the bar who was very knowledgeable about the ciders she had. She also offered certain glasses for certain drinks and cold drinks from the fridge also. She couldn't have been more accommodating. A traditional pub with a very friendly landlady

We called into the Cannon for lunch on Saturday, it has been many years since we last came here. Plenty of room in the car park, we received a warm welcome as we entered the restaurant, were given menus with all kinds to choose from. We chose table 8, sat down and decided what to have. Ordering at the bar, we chose a pot of tea for two, small ham egg and chips and liver, bacon and onions with mash and three veg and gravy. The tea soon came so we had the first of two cups each, looking around the room the decor was poor, almost nothing to look at, however our meals soon arrived, served by the friendly lady that greeted us on arrival. The first meal had good quality ham, lovely chips and a fried egg, the second had four pieces of liver, all perfectly cooked, chopped bacon mixed with the tasty onions, smooth mash, carrots, cauliflower, cabbage and a boat of gravy. The same lady checked to see if all was well with the food. By the time we had finished the meal we were ready for that other cuppa. We found everything to be clean and the service good. Overall we felt the price was fair for our pub lunch and will remember the Cannon for the friendly service.

The food was average and for the prices they charge you expect better. I ordered there specialty burger and the burger was so dry! And I’d only what I imagine dog food to taste like. It’s a shame because the other stuff was okay but again not great. I told the waitress about that and there was no apology she just took the food away and didn’t even offer for us to look at deserts menu even though she asked the table next to us Which I thought was rude. I Wouldn’t recommend it at all which is a shame because we aren’t from there area and we are here on holiday from Essex so It seems a shame as this first bad place we have eaten at in Devon so far.

We were recommended this pub in our welcome guide at our Air BnB, so decided to give it a go! We decided to share a selection of garlic breads - normal, Cheddar and Stilton! As a huge blue cheese fan, I had never had Stilton garlic bread before - huge game changer!! Also, the garlic bread is served on tiger bread.. this is also very nice!! My brother and I had the 10oz Rump Steaks, medium/rare. Both were cooked to perfection! Our cuts of meat were also really good, not fatty at all! Other meals enjoyed were the Chicken Supreme, Liver & Bacon and Ham, Egg & Chips. Staff are friendly! Would definitely recommend this pub - there is a lot I could have eaten off the menu! It’s also dog friendly!

Ten family members went for lunch yesterday. We all had different meals (some had a main course and others just a starter, but all served at the same time, as asked). I had the bacon and back pudding stack. It was scrumptious. All aesthetically pleasing plates of hot, vibrant food. We are local but other members of the family had come to join us from Oxford. They were all delighted with the ease of parking, service, food and how hospitable the staff were for their dogs! I tried my cousins mushroom stroganoff, and i know what i'll be having next time!

How nice to find as bit of imagination in a pub menu.Only in for a quick snack and the 'Black pudding and bacon stack' (£5.95) covered in a mustard and pepper sauce together value and very filling with a neat side salad was excellent. Had I the time the other menu choices on the blackboard looked mighty tempting. The Lancaster Bomber real ale (£4.00) served straight from the cask behind the bar was perfect with the meal. Cheerful efficient service on a quiet Monday lunchtime. Big off road carpark a definite plus. Did not stay in the letting bedrooms.

Visited tonight as regular customer. Very unsatisfying food. The Coca-Cola off the tap was flat and no fizz. No check from staff on food so I notified when them. Adding the wait for them to appear to the bar 10 mins later. There was no service and care taken this evening which is a shame because normally it’s amazing food and good service. The team was really let down this evening. After notifying the staff about the food and requesting not to pay for the meal as only three mouthfuls were consumed as the meal wasn’t nice. To go to pay the bill and the server wasn’t sure what to do. No meal was taken off the bill and morning was complimented. Very ashamed about the quality and service and will be rethinking our visits for food in the future.

Visited The Cannon Inn this evening whilst staying at a cottage in the village. Got there ten minutes before they stopped serving food and yet nothing made us feel that we were putting them out. The bar staff took our order and the food was with us within 10 - 15 minutes. My wife’s ham, egg and chips was simple, well presented and lovely (her description). My daughter’s cheese burger was amazing and in her words exactly what she wanted. The meal came with extremely generous portions of salad and coleslaw and at her request cheesy chips (her choice, don’t judge me). The pork belly I had was excellently cooked and presented with ample potato and vegetables. (The sauce was a little sweet for my palate but that is personal taste and in no way a criticism). I have to mention the service. The lady who took our order and served us bent over backwards to help. On enquiring about a taxi she provided a list of numbers with recommendation pointing out the most local and thereby cost effective. We needed other local info and she was more than happy to help out. All in all I can not recommend this pub highly enough. We ate in relaxed, comfortable surroundings in a relaxed atmosphere with any help we needed.

The Canon serves great fresh food always, it’s great for a whole range of dishes & a Sunday roast cooked on the premises. We love the beer garden & kids climbing frame & the friendly team who work here. You’ll always get good service & a friendly chat from the team & customers. Big portions, good quality & a lovely restaurant. It’s used a lot by locals so that means something too. Big car park so you can park up & enjoy the pub. We had read great things about the Cannon Inn both on Trip Advisor and in the visitors book where we are staying, so we made it our first port of call in order to get some dinner on the first day of our holiday. We asked at the bar whether food was available but were told possibly not as there was a fun day and bbq. We settled for a pint each (I had the best pint of Thatchers Gold EVER) with the aim of moving on after to get dinner elsewhere. Almost immediately the lady who we had spoken to came over and said that we would be able to order food in about 30 mins which was fine by us. So, we ordered steak and ale pie (mine!) and the chorizo, cheese and egg (his). What can I say? The plates were huge and the food divine! Amazing value through and through! Thank you for being able to accommodate two hungry travellers, we will DEFINITELY be back later in the week! Your food is amazing

We visited as a party of 3 on a Sunday afternoon. Each of our meals was fantastic. So tasty and so well cooked. Everything came out piping hot. I had a roast and often find that these can get cold quite quickly but that wasn't the case here. I would say it was possibly too much food for 3 as we each had a large side dish of potato in different forms so there was some wastage. The service was fairly friendly but there didn't seem much urgency to address new customers. We did in fact seat ourselves in the end. I'd highly recommend booking for a Sunday lunch. I'm not sure about other nights in the week but probably best to book, to be safe. You don't want to miss out on some great food.

Why 'Bollinger Knickers', well, that was the name on the till that the landlady had give the charming young lady who drew off my pint. took our order and served us. This was the perfect stop for my daughter and I on the pretty way back from Easter weekend in Devon. And Amy's Alsation was welcome too. To have a really good pint drawn for you is such a rarity nowadays so my visit had the perfect start. The landlady cares about her beer! And she is a damn good cook as well. I was told that she was cooking today. A blackboard menu with plenty to choose from. Real and a very imaginative selection of pub grub with prices to match. For Amy a cheese burger, chips, salad and coleslaw. A vast plateful! For me, ham, egg and chips. A very generous helping of excellent ham, two fresh and very definitely free range eggs and a very big bowl of the best pub chips that I have ever had! And a fine attention to detail in a lovely sprinkle of fresh parsley over the eggs. What a brilliant landlady. What a lovely barmaid. With that public bar the locals must be the happiest for many a mile. I shall definitely take the pretty way again next time Devon calls.

Our family ate at the Cannon Inn twice in the evening and again one lunchtime. We were impressed by the extensive choice of home cooked food and the size of the portions. They certainly believe in sending you home well fed. In fact it was fortunate that on each occasion we decided to walk home. The rack of ribs served on a very large silver platter and the 16 ounce tea bone steak (which was a genuine 16 ounces) proved to be a worthwhile challenge... and that was only the main courses. The starters and sweets were equally HUGE!The Cannon is more of a pub than a restaurant but it is a comfortable and relaxing place to dine. The staff are both efficient and friendly and the service could not be faulted. It is best to book in advance on a Tuesday and a Thursday which are speciality nights. Beyond disappointing- wouldn’t recommend to anyone, awful experience. The manager was beyond uncooperative! We had booked through hotel.com a ‘family room’ , we had then noticed a few days before our stay a luxury room had become available at a cheaper price so we rang up and spoke to a gentleman Luke( couldn’t fault him in any way-the most understanding staff member they had) who had it all swapped over for us- upon arrival we had to wait 20 minutes for them to even be able to open up the room door which was beyond a joke, key wouldn’t work so had to get maintenance ( is this not checked before check in? How could they have cleaned the room the morning of our stay when they key wouldn’t work?) when we did eventually get in, the smell was gross, smelt like old, dog and damp and wasn’t the warmest of rooms. The windows wouldn’t close and we had a view onto the back alley. The room was decorated with dog hair it seems, dog hair in the bed, in the shower floor and the blankets and in general over the floor. Dog friendly yes- this amount of hair NO. We then went down and questioned as we did not get either a luxury room or what we first enquired about as a family. We got a standard double-so not even what we paid for. We weren’t welcome back for breakfast and they refused a refund or even partial to fund towards our amazing stay in the premier in 30 second walk around the corner. premier in = 5 STAR. Highly recommend not staying a night in this eyre court hotel.
