Canal Duke in Wigan

I think it’s about time someone put a recent review on here as many things have changed and not for the better. They don’t serve food and haven’t since the unfortunate death of a previous landlord. RIP Mick. The last year things have gone from worse to worse and although customers going in, who have got involved to revamp the experience with social events like quiz nights, it’s only the friends that go in make it worth going in at all. Firstly, the drinks on draught, are hit and miss for quality, with the lack of gas one issue and then, the scandalous pricing for a local pub in a family orientated area the other. If you compared these with the centre of Tyldesleys prices, you’d wonder why people drink here. Most of the staff are inexperienced and rude and don’t do the basics like, collecting empties off tables and generally keeping the place tidy when there’s no one at the bar. The snacks ate not replenished and run out of things often. You end up going to the local coop or even, bring food from the takeaways from the precinct next door. The adjoining “vault” area always seems like there’s something dodgy going on and I’ve seen certain staff popping off to the toilet after being handed something and could explain why some are rude and act like they own the place. Many times they’re swearing in front of families and occasionally ranting at customers, slagging the place off and saying why do you even come here, “it’s a s hole”. Then there’s the actual sports shown there. Some tvs don’t work properly, the sound is in one area and the surround experience they keep telling you they’ve had installed, is really bad. Lots of cables dangling down and mounted tvs look unsafe. If you put this on top of the pricing, why would you go in to watch the football regularly. Now to the kids play area which hasn’t changed since I moved into the area in 2001. The climbing frame looks unsafe and there are nails and other things around and the fencing is constantly broken. They have double the space out the back but, only use half of it and again it’s just really untidy and not very nice for families. They have added benches to the back and to the front of the pub in a small beer garden but, the back drop of that is houses opposite and the sometimes busy Stour road. Overall, it’s over priced, staff poor and the only the reason I go in is the people who go in to socialise with but, we all complain about one of the mentioned negatives. Not an enjoyable experience if you think about what you get for your money. We all live within walking distance and just deserve so much more from a local and could be so much more if someone actually ran the pub properly. Most days it’s empty but, if the pricing was more affordable for all, it would definitely be well frequented and you’d see even more local people choose this pub instead of doing the 10 minute walk to Tyldesley. Such a shame after the previous owners started to get food off the ground and it was more affordable overall.

Was a quiet night when I went in but the barmaid was lovely and helpful. The place was clean and friendly. Must visit newish owner and new manager.

Orla and the rest of the staff are great. Friendly pub. Kids welcome theres play area at the back. Quiz night is great!

I'm a DJ and did a children's party event at this venue recently. It has a lovely open feel to the place with separate rooms for entertainment. Lovely staff and really friendly and helpful. The venue is situated in housing area of Astley so is a great local venue for tenants. The rear area is Currently under construction to develop a play area which will be a great space for children's entertainment when complete. I would rate the canal Duke 5 stars and highly recommended for general visits and parties ... DJ Trevor Pulse entertainments.

Great place for entertainment, and a great atmosphere OPEN MIC NIGHT every other Thursday from 7.30 till 11( be early if you want to perform)

Very impressive family Halloween event catering for all the family. Can't wait to see what the new owners do with the place over the next few years

Disappointing beyond belief !!! After being closed for months, nothing has changed apart from a lick of outside paint. This pub has fantastic potential but fails to break out of the 1980's. The new signs outside advertise "real ales", but there is not a single hand pump in the building, and even the TV screens show fuzzy pictures that are not even H.D. I was looking forward to having a decent pub that was in walking distance of mine (and hundreds of other) houses, but I don't think I will bother going there again unless there are massive improvements.

Friendly local serving great meals. Large car park. Decent beers at reasonable cost. Dogs welcome in vault area.

Lovely pub, nice atmosphere and gorgeous food. Busy, but t is Bonfire night and was still well organised, a good night.

Have eaten here a few times know and can say the food as been excellent every time. Recommend the fish finger sandwich really fills you up

Just tried a takeaway sunday dinner from there and yes, it was spot on 👍 havent had the chance to actually sit down with it fresh on a plate served up yet but will defo get in there soon with the family to do so! Props to the chefs, thanks guys 👍👍

A bit dated not changed for years but ok for a drink

New owner and staff very friendly and accommodating. Excellent food and huge portions. Well worth supporting and we will be returning.

The best cheese and onion pie ever served in a pub! A good helping, lots of cheese, with chips and beans, all piping hot as it should be. Starters of garlic mushroms and sticky chicken wings also went down well, washed down with good cold beer. 80s music being played on the television, but not too loud to stop conversation. The rear of the pub is work in progress and should be cleaned up soonest. Even so, what a pleasant change it is to have fantastic food and reasonably priced, compared to many other pubs and hotels with better surroundings and poor quality food. Well done Canal Duke, we will be back again soon. Give it a try yourself, recommended.

The food is good but the pie is to big and I don't think you should chips with the meat and potato pie .For the children menu they should be given the option of skinny fries or chunky chips. Value for money

I never thought it could have been worse than under its previous owner but it is. My wife and I visited for the first time and was astounded how bad the place is. The gents were the worst smelling toilets I’ve ever encountered - they had no air fragrance units or urinal cakes or functioning vents. The outdoor area looks like a construction site and is also a health and safety hazard as it is littered with wood and broken light sockets. If the front of house is this bad I shudder to think what the back of house areas are like - I certainly won’t be eating there. Never going back again!

The food was excellent, limited choice bcoz it was their first weekend. Will definitely try the full menu now it's on.

New landlord in town. Place is looking better, feeling better already and the beers are decent and reasonably priced. Special offer during the Euro's was £2 a pint till the 1st goal is scored each game.....Awesome deal.

Looking forward to enjoying a meal there too.
