Calvers Italian Bar & Kitchen in Hastings

Last night my friends and I came for dinner and not one of us walked away happy with our meal or service. When we have been previously the food was Italian and we were spoilt for choice with food and drinks leaving us all highly recommending the restaurant. My partner's Guinness came out unsettled and with a huge head on it, the menu has become small and 'authentic' which isn't shown online as my friend looked it up before hand looking forward to Italian dishes etc. I opted for the beef ragu and if that was made with a lovely tomato sauce it would taste 100% better rather then how it was served looking bland and tasteless with the only good thing about it being the pulled beef. The garlic bread was basically bread with 1/4 of it having garlic oil on it having to ask for oil to dunk the (bread) in. We also ordered the sharing platter which for the money was also disappointing, all the while having the kill fruit flies throughout our whole meal. Sadly I wouldn't recommend this restaurant again and felt robbed of £165.

Looks nice fairly priced. Staff friendly and polite. Four of us visited one had pizza that was good. My daughter and Myself both had the spaghetti carbonara it was home-made Spaghetti. But sadly, it was very heavy and thick not great. They did forget the rocket salad I ordered. Would like to see more comfort choices on the menu. I’m sure I will visit again.

The food is authentic quality ingredients delisous plus dessert 🎂 wine 🍷.

Had lunch there, it was very quiet. The lasagne made with shin of beef was delicious.

This Hastings landmark has always been a favourite. When it changed hands a few years ago, it could have been the end. Far from it. The decor and menu have been updated and a new generation is making this a go-to restaurant for lovers of the very best of authentic Italian food. The clever new menu is the antidote to tasteless pizza and plastic pasta. Here the dough and the pasta is made in house, and you can taste the difference. The sauce on the Sciallatielli Gamberi was full of fresh flavours, and the pasta was thick and filling making the most of the sauce. The Salsiccia Friarielli Pizza was thin and tasty with plenty of sausage and greens. Service was friendly and super efficient. Highly recommended if you are in Hastings.

Popped in with my family for a lunchtime snack. We had a wonderful bubbly server called Mollie who was the most helpful server I’ve ever met. Food was great and the price was spot on. If you pass it and don’t go in, you’ve missed a treat.

We tried this place when it first opened and I wasn't exactly overwhelmed. With a recent name change, new head chef and menu, we thought we'd give it another go - glad we did as it was a real treat this time, they've really got into their stride and the food is first class. I'd recommend it to anyone.

We had mollie as our server today, she was absolutely wonderful! Couldn’t help us anymore. Very friendly and wonderful delicious food! Would come back for sure!

We booked our end of season cricket dinner here for 25 persons which was catered for upstairs. Organising a dinner for that many people can be tricky but Mollie made it very easy for us by sending a great online booking system where attendees can add their choices easily. She also called to check that dishes were GF etc. + discuss what we wanted from the night. On arrival, Mollie's staff really looked after us with a smile. They served us drinks upstairs and the food was brought out promptly all at the same time. All of our attendees were happy with the quality of food and stated what a great evening it had been. Thanks to Mollie & her staff for looking after us.

Great place with super views of the seafront, good selection of food on the menu, with vegan and gluten free options available.

Food was average. The children had garlic bread for starter, pizza for main and dough balls for desert and they felt like they had just eaten the same dough for each meal. The menu was small and limited. The calamari was rubbery and the risotto (supposed to be veggie) just tasted like chicken stock. Puddings were very poor. It was busy as there was 15 of us but drinks we had to ask for a couple of times as they were forgotten. The staff were great though and friendly. We had booked it for a birthday, we wasn't told the candles couldn't be lit until they brought the cake out which was a bit of a let down. We had heard such great things about the place so we was really disappointed, definitely won't be in a rush to return.

Nice food, pleasant staff but very small portion sizes for adults. Left the restaurant hungry.

Feeling adventurous as looking for a meal experience to get me in holiday mode. The service and Pea Papadillo did the job. I may even be persuaded that mushy peas CAN taste good when disguised 😋

Had lunch here food was just heated up not freshly made rumba ba taste like lemon cake and no one was really bothered chef took it of menu but no apology. Waitress was good and friendly and place was clean .

Staff are delightful and interior is lovely. I didn't have to book and the food came quickly. The food itself leaves much to be desired and the price is pretty steep.

An ok restaurant Service, food, cost all ok, not exceptional.

I chose a lasagna, it was over cooked and burnt at the edges I couldn't even get a fork in it, also it was very salty, I sent it back and decided to not have anything else. Would not recommend

We didn't have a reservation for this restaurant, we stumbled across it. Really friendly, nice and attentive staff. Food was very nice, just slightly disappointed with one of the starters as there wasn't much to it. Nice view of the beach from upstairs but it was quite hot.

Had the pleasure of eating at this beautiful restaurant in the most lovely little spot. The food, the staff, everything was perfect and I would highly recommend the carbonara, was the best that I have had and I have eaten a fair few of these. If you’re in the area give this place a try 😊

Decent food, no wait. A little pricey for standard of food.

Having visited the previous vendor multiple times this was my first time in Rocksalt. It did not disappoint and added to the experience was seeing students from primary school growing into amazing young people

Sat up stairs enjoying the view had a grate pizza and a beer withe the wife. And not to expensive.

Thanks to Molly and her colleagues we felt great in this place. They smile and make you feel happy. Drinks are delicious, especially my Espresso Martiny was lush! Food is fresh and very tasty. We will be back!😍

Molly and her team Milly and Alisha where fantastic fun and looked after us all very well, the food was lovely, tue cocktails where out of this world and the upstairs is just lovely, we are looking forward to coming back.

Highly recommend dining here. We visited yesterday and the staff were amazing and so nice & friendly! The food was great we all enjoyed our meals, I would definitely recommend the beef shin ragú it was delicious!! The cocktails tasted great and looked super pretty! Amazing place to go and eat! Molly and Sophie were amazing and could not do enough for us. We took our little 2 year old out for dinner, they made us feel so welcome and were so helpful with out little one. My partner ordered a Guinness and they unfortunately ran out at the time, they offered us lots of other drinks which my partner got another drink. Half way through our meal a delivery arrived to which molly kindly came over to tell us and offered my partner a pint for free as a little gesture for the inconvenience which we really appreciated. We will definitely be back again, thank you!

I waited almost 25 minutes for a margherita pizza, and it wasn't even cut

Had a lovely meal here - great pasta and pizza followed by a delicious tiramisu!

Booked for 7pm. Had starter still waiting at 8.26pm for main meal!! Service very very slow. Don't arrange any bookings before meal!!

A table upstairs gives you a great view to complement the great food & service.

Service was a bit slow considering it was a Tuesday and they didn't have some of the stuff on the menu considering it was only 6 pm

Nothing short of amazing, brilliant food, flavoursome and cooked to perfection. Salmon was delicious and the chicken cooked perfectly. Sticky toffee pudding was a must.

We booked not sure where we'd be sitting but Molly brilliantly read my booking instructions and gave us a seat with a view - thank you Molly! The food was super tasty, cooked well and presented in an appealing manner. I especially enjoyed the pizza and the well made and cooked base. The group of six all enjoyed their visit and would highly recommend this restaurant.

We choose Rocksalt for my Mum's 80th Birthday last Saturday (22nd July) and had a fabulous evening. I made our reservation around 1 month beforehand as there were 17 in our party and I obviously couldn't leave it until the last minute. Communications with the manager Mollie were great throughout and on the night itself everyone couldn't have done anymore than they did to make sure we all had a great time and very memorable celebration. Thank you Mollie and team x

Very tasty food, good location, nice service.

This place is a not so hidden gem in the centre of Hastings. Service is absolutely amazing. Mollie went above and beyond to provide what can only be described as the best hospitality and customer care I have ever encountered. And the icing on the cake to this wonderful experience was the king prawn linguine and garlic flatbread that was cooked by Joel Cruz. Simply the most delectable balance of flavours of chilli and seafood I have ever tasted. If there were medals for cooking and hospitality, these people would win Gold every time.

This restaurant, formerly The Italian Way, was an iconic feature of Hastings and had been a part of my seaside experience for all my life, across 3 generations. I loved the 1970s decor and tiling and the lively Italian atmosphere. It was one of the main reasons for visiting Hastings. I must say the staff were extremely welcoming and accommodating though and my meal and drink were delicious. However, I thought the menu was rather limited, a bit fussy and not very child friendly. The Rocksalt could be any restaurant anywhere really. Nothing special. Probably absolutely fine for anyone who hadn't experienced The Italian Way. Sadly, for me, it's lost its charm.

My third visit and the food and service are incredible every time. Today was a step above thanks to Molly and the rest of the team. I thought I’d booked for today only to find I’d booked for a date in July - but they could not be more accommodating and we all (groups of 10) had an amazing time. Thank you!

Pizza was burned on the bottom and sloppy on the top (you lost up a slice and all the topping slides of onto the plate). Very disappointed. First time my youngsters have refused to eat pizza. To give the staff credit they only charged us for 2 of the 4 pizzas after seeing the blackened bases. With some good reviews on here I wonder if they have different chefs and you have to go when the one who can cook is working?

Had a fantastic lunchtime meal overlooking the beach. Staff were friendly and helped us decide what to eat as we were unsure. Would recommend.

Great Italian restaurant in a great location. Unfortunately the upstairs was closed when we went. I would expect having great sea views from there. Looking forward for its openinig as we would like to return and taste more of their delicious original Italian dishes.

For sea views and watching people wonder by - idyllic For Italian food - there are much better, smaller authentic Italian places in town. I had a pizza and there was too much on there, it was stodgy and the flavours didn't work, some other members of my party had pasta dishes and it seemed they were more enjoyable. The staff were switched on with allergen awareness and knowledge.

1st time visiting Hastings and the best thing about it was the food and service here thank for a great meal and very friendly and welcoming staff 10/10

Great location wonderful views out to sea food average small portions slightly over priced cheerful nice staff.

Food was lovely and staff friendly but Service felt very rushed and just too quick. 2 courses and drinks for 2 people in 45 minutes. Just got the impression that it was all about getting tables filled and emptied as quickly as possible. No chance of having a chilled out relaxed meal. Sorry to say we won't be back.

Was looking forward to a visit here as we loved the old Italian way. Wasn't very busy but service quite slow. Was not impressed by the menu. Chose prawn linguine, lucky if I had four prawns. Garlic bread burnt and hard. Pepper Mills given but had to try about 4 of them before pepper came out. Waitress giggled. For a new business not impressed. Fish and chips on the front it will be next visit. Shame

We stopped in for lunch, both had pizzas and they were both so sloppy that I had to eat with a knife and fork. Even then, we had to leave some for the fear of how it would affect our body on the way out. 😂 We then decided that benefit of doubt was needed, so we headed back for dinner a week later. I ordered lasagne, and what I was presented with, I know isn’t suitable in prison, I work there. It was sloppy, flavourless and I just could not eat it. My wife said her meal was okay but not what she expected it to be. We were disappointed to say the least as the Bexhill branch is great. I spoke to a staff member about our meals and they said they would remove my meal as they could see if hardly touched it and they also apologised for the long wait on ordering and receiving the food. The three ladies I spoke with were all very polite and apologetic. We would love to go back and have a decent meal.

Avoid this refurbished restaurant....Outrageously expensive for the worst quality food... Just walk past the place ....Avoid

Overall we were very disappointed. A Mother's Day treat where my wife had all her family there to celebrate and everything seemed wrong. Some of us ordered a starter, some didn't, then ages later only some of the mains came out, and the waitress had ordered the wrong food so one of us had to wait even longer. One of the burgers was burnt, and the carbonara had to be recooked as it was a case if 'hunt the bacon' as well as there being very little sauce. So everyone seemed to be eating at different times! The waitress apologized saying it was because only some had a starter and she didn't realise we wanted it all at the same time! We didn't. It was just an excuse for bad timing and badly cooked food. Unfortunately we won't go back for a very long time, if at all. We all feel so unhappy that a special meal for our family went so wrong. The waitress didn't charge us for one main course and one drink, but the way the evening went we shouldn't have had to pay for anything. Needless to say we didn't have any desserts, which I was looking forward to.

Great Restaurant, food is beautiful and perfectly portioned. All the family love this place and we don't go to Hastings anymore without eating here. Highly recommend the Beef Shin.

Portion size is terrible. Children would be hungry let alone the adults! In and out in 45mins. Would not recommend at all. Poor presentation of food pay extra for everything.

Very disappointed... The food is tasteless, the menu is poor. No Internet connection, no wifi for customers (just for staff). Wouldn't recommend it for tourists or for locals.

Really nice stone baked pizza, considering there were 50 of us, the service was quick and efficient. The staff were also polite and pleasant.

My wife and I each had the Italian Burger. Very disappointing. Very dry and were completely missing the advertised ketchup and black olives.
