Cake in East Lothian

Delicious lentil soup. I also had a hummus sandwich on granary bread with Chilli jam that I would recommend. All tasted home made and fresh. Coffee excellent top as were the cakes. Service excellent and very friendly Definitely five out of five stats

OMG !! Very very slow service … ordered breakfast (well I use that term loosely) they should be very embarrassed charging such extortionate price .. for what they serve .. over cooked everything could not eat it bacon was rock hard , sausage was also burnt probably cooked last week … Scrambled egg was like sick on a plate … Basically chef needs to go back to the drawing board on this or simply take it off the menu .. front of house staff need re training .. whilst the cakes all look great .. suggests you should just stick to tea and CAKE !!

Lovely cafe in the heart of North Berwick. Soup was tasty and the accompanying sandwich was nice and the ingredients were all fresh and locally produced. Generous portions. Tea and coffee also nice and staff very friendly and accommodating. Only downside I would say is that it lacks a little atmosphere and character, the room felt a little bare and could maybe do with some TLC. Needs something to bring it all together. Maybe some nice artwork on the walls would be nice and some plants. Or maybe combine both and sell some local art. All in all a nice place to stop off for some brunch.

Lovely cafe, nice atmosphere, I live locally & have always liked it for coffee & a scone or cake. However I went for lunch yesterday for the first time. I ordered a toastie from the menu board which showed a price of £5.95. It was very tasty but when I went to pay I was charged £10.50, apparently the price on the board is the takeaway price only. I realise there is tax payable on eat-ins & you do get a salad garnish but this is a ridiculous price difference, over 70%, I can't see how it can be justified. At the very least Cake, you certainly need to specify that the board prices are for takeaway. Very disappointing, I shan't go there for lunch again.

Wonderful cafe with great coffee and fabulous cakes. Located in the centre of North Berwick, Cake is very welcoming with lovely staff and a terrific selection of cakes and toasties. Thoroughly recommend!

Think this lot were wearing Dick Turpin masks! £10.50 for a cheese and onion toastie. When I complained when paying bill was told ‘yes but it has sides’ What a small bunch of limp lettuce with 2 cherry tomatoes, a teaspoon of coleslaw and a few crisps?! Come on owner of Cafe. You’re taking advantage of families during a cost of living crisis!

Went into this cafe for a toastie and coffee with family. 3 toasties and 3 coffee's £40 odds. £10 for a toastie cheese and onion was a ridicoulus price. Was nothing special either. How they can charge that is shocking. No prices on menu either. I wonder why. Wont be back

In a word, disappointed. Stopped in for a light breakfast - "toast" was ridiculous as the bread wasn't even coloured but would have made a most excellent brick! Served with a small pot of lemon curd and no butter. Drinks - coffee, tea and a hot chocolate were decent. Prices were steep with a basic ham and cheese toastie costing £10. Certainly nothing to write home about and not a smile in sight. Won't be returning in a hurry!

Don’t visit for take out food or drinks. They have a big sign saying “Takeaway queue” but the staff just walked past me, served others, then blamed me for not pushing past the table right beside the till to place an order. There were about five people working and it seems they’d all been told not to smile. .

Waited 20 minutes and no-one came near our table, eventually asked for a menu and waited another 10 minutes before our order was taken. Tea arrived well before food (couple of bacon rolls and scrambled egg on toast, not that complex) hence was cold by the time we were eating. Food was average but expensive, very disappointing.

Such a shame as really liked Cake. However the staff who "served" me were extremely unfriendly and unhelpful. I finally got a menu but no greeting. When no one even looked at me after walking past several times, I went up to order. No apology, just an unsmiling waitress who looked like I'd ruined her day. I asked if I had to collect my own drink, but wasn't answered so I did. Sat there for another 5 minutes before I had to get up and ask got a glass and if someone could open it. The guy did it, unsmiling again. To be honest, these two are clearly in the wrong job. I've worked in cafes and in hospitality when I was younger and it really isn't that hard to be helpful and share a nice word or smile. I should have left then... when my food arrived it was the completely wrong order. She simply wasn't listening to me at all. They no longer had any of what I had ordered. So I paid for my drink and left! It's a shame as I think it could do so well if they just got some better staff or trained the team better!

I was completely ignored when I walked in and the lady behind me was greeted an had her order taken immediately. When I mentioned this to the girl there was no offer of an apology, in fact, I was ignored again. I have worked in a busy cafe environment myself in North Berwick and understand that things get stressful but I found this completely unacceptable and my once favourite cafe has disappointed me.

Food took 20+ minutes to arrive. Avocado was brown and stringy, salmon wasn’t great, toast was burned. Coffee was more like milk. Never usually leave reviews at all but honestly, wouldn’t go here, not worth your time and money as it is pretty expensive too.

Stopped off with friends for a drink. Nice atmosphere, good service, excellent coffee. We didn't eat there but no reason why that would be any different, well worth calling in.

Went on the recommendation of a friend. The staff were very helpful and made sure we were well settled, perfect with a 4mth baby. The variety of food was fantastic and very tasty. We even took some takeaway cake. Definitely recommend a visit

We bought a couple of salads and coffees to go on our first day in North Berwick. Loved the food so much we did it again on our last day! Highly recommended.

Stopped in for Lunch nice staff and a great Mozzarella Tomato toastie. Try the Banna Bread. Definitely worth a try

Visited twice, once with youngest for coffee and cake (I recommend the carrot cake- massive slices delicious cake) the people were super friendly. And we went back for breakfast- my youngest recommends bacon and maple syrup bagel, we had scrambled egg rolls. Will come back...

Just popped in for breakfast roll and tea. Sausages on roll were ok, tea, proper tea leaves but not in a good teapot. When poured inside holding leaves was not attached properly, giving me tea leaves swimming round in my cup, something I hate. When...

We chose Cake for lunch. Delicious lentil soup and sandwich combo. Egg Mayo with lots of mayo which was very creamy and with flavour. Coffee was great too. Would recommend and would return.

Popped in here for a quick take away. Chose a roll from the fridge. Brie and Chutney. Has to be the best roll I have ever had. Bread was amazing. So fresh and filling. Also bought a piece of carrot cake. Again amazing. Well done...

Nice place for a quick lunch in North Berwick. The prawn sandwich was generously sized and the special, sweet potato soup was very tasty.

Great service and fantastic scones - visited twice during my break in North Berwick. When asked how the scones compared to mine my nephew said these are made by professionals!

Went in today for lunch, the food was 👌🏼👌🏼 All four of us loved it. Soup was so tasty, sandwiches were too. My 5 year old had the kids ‘picky plate’ and ate every bit. Clean plates all round.

Popped in for coffee and scones on a drive through the area. The fruit scone was one of the best I’ve had in a long time. Very tasty with a nice crunch on the outside. Will be back

Had a light lunch here on Friday with my wife. Smashed avocado on sourdough toast and tuna mayo sandwiches. Both were good quality and well filled. Very reasonable prices and efficient and helpful staff.

Went yesterday around lunchtime. Scones were amazing but despite signage other cafe users were not wearing face coverings, moving around the cafe without face coverings, using the toilet facilities as takeaway customers, pushing past my chair to pay when it clearly states payment at table....

Service is poor and the noise level is intolerable. Something to dull down the acoustics would be helpful - the loud music does not help. Not somewhere for a relaxing brunch.

Very noisy. More of a meeting place for people chatting over a coffee and cake. Makes it hard to get a table for lunch. Long wait for table and then food. Would not recommend for lunch if you don’t have a lot of time to wait. Food was nice.

Two fantastic large coffees and just the best ever carrot cake for less than £8! Bargain price and nice place to sit on a wet November afternoon.

Delicious place to stop for breakfast,brunch or tea/coffee and a scone. It’s always busy but it’s worth waiting on a table. I have eaten breakfast, lunch and scones and can highly recommend them all. A great place to recharge when visiting the beautiful town of North Berwick

Went into this popular cafe by chance and was very happy to find 2 vegan soups on offer plus choice of bread and dairy free spread. It was busy - and the next day all tables were full - so worth going early for lunch. I also saw vegan samosas on offer.

We decided against eating at our hotel and the short stroll to Cake was well worth it - big menu with quality local produce and good customer service- no frills, great value.

Lovely sunny Sunday so had a trip to North Berwick and a wander round the harbour. Went to Cake for coffee and cake. Love Cake because they have gluten free brownie, and gluten free is vital for Mrs. Had a lovely scone washed down with fresh filter coffee.

This is a nice place but needs more staff. I went on a Friday morning around 9.30. The place is quite big. They got out order wrong on 2 separate things - were very apologetic - and I think it's because of a shortage of staff. I was needing to get the 10.27 train and nearly missed it because the food took so long. We got our breakfast - which took longer because of the error - at 9.55 or so, so we had to rush. I wish places would just spend a little more on an extra member of staff - it would soon pay for itself! Also, I think more attention could be spent on the coffee - to get it really really amazing, it should be 'barista' level. It was just ordinary. I really wanted to like this place but probably won't go back.

Cake was great for families however they have now taken away the kids area which was unique in the area. So really disappointed with this. Also now more expensive now however still good quality of food and coffee.

We visited twice for breakfast during our short stay. Smashed avocado with smoked salmon then bagels with smoked salmon with cream cheese set us up for the day. The coffee is also fab. Reasonably priced compared to others locally.

I absolutely love Cake and the food on offer, my young child and I spend time here at least one a week. Always plenty atmosphere.

We had a great visit at the 'Cake' cafe. We grabbed the table that just got free and people left a bit of a mess on it. However, the staff cleaned it within few mins and apologized a couple of times. We didn't make a big deal out of it but it was appreciated that someone took care of it quickly.

Lovely friendly wee local cafe - ideal for after - or during - a wee walk around in North Berwick, or along the beach

I have been here many times, I have noticed that cake is not your normal cafe, it is a hub for the community and a place where people feel at home and safe. The same people (including myself) come back time and time again for the consistently fabulous cakes and the personal welcome. The staff get to know your name, they get to know what coffee and cake you like, on a bad day ill go in and all they say is "the usual?" and I feel relaxed.

I visit cake regularly; due to the variety of food on offer, (vegan and vegetarian options also), insanely high standards of food, the amazing and attentive staff and the atmosphere in the cafe in general. I would say I am in here every week and I am yet to be disappointed. The scones are to die for, freshly made every single morning. After speaking to the owners Leah and Amanda I found out they source a lot of their goodies locally which is also admirable as they support other local businesses to make theirs great. Please if you are in the area do not walk past without popping in, even if it is for a takeaway treat or coffee - you will not be disappointed. Child friendly also with a lovely play area. I really can’t fault it. Today I had smashed avocado on sour dough, wide a side of tasty crispy bacon and grilled tomatoes, followed by a lovely flat white, and my friend had their delicious ploughman’s platter with a small mug of soup.

Best latte (& hot) I’ve had for a long time

4 of us stopped here, all had something different and it was delicious!! Hubby said it was the best carrot cake he’d ever had. I shared a scone and chocolate brownie and both were amazing. Definitely recommend and staff very friendly.

My experience was great the food was amazing and good service. The cakes were delicious and there was lots of different drink and food options. Definitely recommend going there it was fab! And there was lots of gluten free and vegetarian options too.

called here for our 11am cup of tea and scone the tea was great nice and strong and the scone was lovely, been to shops in the past that pass off there scones as home made, the shop was clean friendly and would call again in the future if we visit again

Went here with my family had a full scottish breakfast it was fab. Fresh and delicious with huge portions. Lovely friendly atmosphere and staff were very attentive.

Having lived just outside of NYC for over two decades, surprised to find the best bagel and salmon in this gem of a café in the delightful seaside town of North Berwick. Salads, sandwiches and baked goodies too.

I come here two of three times a week, both with my young children and to catch up on work/ uni work. I find it a fantastic place for both those things. There is a little children’s area (modelled by my daughter) if they want to play and the menu is perfect with lots of healthy finger foods (modelled by my son below ) the staff are so friendly and welcoming, the reason I come back so often was that the second time I visited they not only remembered me but what I liked to eat and were comfortably chatty - not that nauseating fake friendly that you get in some places. They have options for our food intolerances and never judge me for all the sweeteners I have in my coffee or how strong I request it to be! Their take away mugs are completely compostable too so they are very green as well as being very friendly! I couldn’t recommend it more - in fact I am off there now to get some work done.

We visit Cake regularly as we love the menu, the quality of the food and the friendly service. The soups are fabulous, with interesting and delicious combinations on offer. The prices are very reasonable and it has a great, relaxed vibe.

Pleasantly surprised! The coffee was amazing however the cakes were a little bit pricey (despite being yummy) Also maybe it would be better to have some cushions on the hard benches? Would’ve stayed longer if they weren’t so uncomfortable (other tables weren’t available)

My husband and I popped in to Cake to have light lunch. Lucky to get a seat as it was really busy. We had soup and a salad bowl which were both delicious. Prices are excellent and a very large varied menu running from breakfast to lunch and cakes galore...... great choice for everyone!! Been before and will definitely be back.

Had a fab coffee and cake stop here on a busy sunny Sunday. Staff were great, the shop nice and cool. We had the carrot cake & fruit scone both possibly the best we’ve ever tasted would highly recommend.

Family of 7 visited for brunch, great for young kids with play area. Food was excellent, well priced and good atmosphere. Couldn’t fault the service.

Visited Cake right before going to the castle. We’re really hungry. Ordered bagel en toast. It was good! Had the deluxe hot chocolate (not much deluxe about it but still nice). Eventually a whole bunch of kids came into the restaurant causing a lot of noise. Family oriented restaurant, don’t come if you want quiet and peace. ;)

Enjoyed drinks here on a cold and drizzly afternoon. The tea pot with loose leaves was a lovely touch and my daughters enjoyed their child-sized hot chocolates.

Eaten in here twice now, both times were a great experience. Friendly staff who made us feel welcome. The sandwiches were lovely as was the delicious homemade soup and I enjoyed a ploughman's lunch on my last visit. Food freshly prepared and is of good quality and reasonably priced. Would thoroughly recommend this cafe to all and we will definitely visit again.

Nice sandwiches and good selection that come with salads, which is amazing. The place is favoured by families with toddlers or you children which tend to be noisy but that's life. I suppose noise deadening or absorbing pictures e.t.c can be added to the sealing or walls might help. The beach and the Bird centre and the town has a lot to offer with tour ferries an added bonus

we walked in, looked around, and quickly walked out!!! empty tables full of crockery, young people behind the counter more interested in chatting than even saying hello or even thinking of clearing a table, what a waste of a good cafe

Visited this place because our favourite cafe had changed ownership. Glad we did though, it was a cold damp May Sunday. And although not too busy when we arrived, it soon filled up. We ordered coffee and scones and both were delicious. Lovely creamy latte and huge scones. Would definitely visit again next time we are down that way. There were lots of Sunday broadsheets to read and would have been a nice peaceful way to pass some time with a delicious snack except for the fact that there was one rather noisy small child (cute but persistent). Also perhaps when your children are in mixed age company you might point out to them the difference between a park, a nursery school and a cafe where people may be carrying hot food and drinks. This is a growing problem now and I have seen some near misses in various towns where toddlers and young children are allowed to run around when the less able bodied are attempting to get there hot soup or drinks to their table. Also where toys are provided by the cafe perhaps parent and owners could keep a watch out for the trip hazards caused by abandoned toys. Love children, but parents, wakey, wakey!!

This cafe has a nice relaxing atmosphere with friendly helpful staff and a good selection of tasty treats.

There is absolutely no excuse for tables being cluttered with previous patrons cups and saucers. I had to clear these away and placed them on an adjacent table where they remained for the duration of my visit. The table I occupied consequently never received the wipe it merited and all around the floor were crumbs and dust that clearly had not been swept for some time. There was adequate staff to customers so I can only assume it was abject laziness that explained the slovenliness. I suspect there is an absence of hands on owner or manager with a keen eye or higher attention to detail.

You know that feeling when you order a delicious scone to go with your afternoon tea, and your other half orders the most delicious looking bit of flapjack - well that!!

Popped in for lunch, in a rare day when it was just me and my husband (feeling a bit like we were bunking off) :-). I had a very generous and delicious ploughmans salad, with oatcakes. Hubby had brie ham and cranberry toastie, also delish.The cafe has really good, wholesome freshly made food at a good price and has a wide choice for those who want gluten free.We'll definitely be back soon

Popped in for lunch. Staff couldn't have been more friendly and helpful. Food was excellent quality and good value - and 3 fussy young waters cleared their plates. Play corner for younger kids and newspapers/magazines for the grown-ups.

I drop in regularly always get an excellent coffee never been disappointed. Scones are beautiful and their bacon, sausage or black pudding rolls are superb. Lots of choices of soups and wide variety of sandwiches also have gluten free cakes which is fabulous.

I visited Cake again during a long weekend stay in North Berwick. Having been before I knew the quality of food to expect. We were welcomed by a cheery happy young lady who allowed us to sit where we wanted. My wife selected the soup of the day - lentil which came with rustic bread- which she thoroughly enjoyed. I chose the cheddar cheese and ham on white but asked if I could substitute the tomato chutney for sliced tomato, which caused no problem whatsoever. The sandwich came with a mixed salad and crisps. The mixed salad had balsamic vinegar on which for me was great but you might need to check with the waiter/waitress if it's not for you. The cheddar cheese was cut thick which made for a great sandwich. The cost is very reasonable. I expect to be back during my next visit.

Would recommend for anyone with kids as it's a very family friendly place and the food is fab. Toasties are brilliant and there is always lentil soup on offer. Very frequent visitor to the cafe and never disappointed, only when it's busy and there are no tables!

This is a little too child-friendly for my taste. A large cohort of kids, a designated play area and an echoey interior make for an unrelaxing stay. BUT the sandwiches are fabulous and it is just a pound extra to add their home-made soup - a bargain!

Hugely popular especially with families. Great selection of breakfast items and of course cakes, friendly and efficient staff despite being so busy. Will return.

We have eaten here several times and always had very good homemade food and cakes .The service is prompt ,friendly and very welcoming.

Fairly basic decor and lovely, reasonably priced food but extremely noisy. Not a bad idea to have a corner with toys for the younger kids but please, please put down a rug or something so customers don't have do listen to toys and bricks being banged off a wooden floor. This, along with quite loud music made it anything but a relaxing lunch. Also, claims to have gluten free cakes but had not one available when we were there - false advertising so check before sitting down.

Popped in here one cold Sunday afternoon for lunch. We both ordered a soup and a sandwich which were on a deal. Lentil soup was lovely,very hot and tasty followed by a Brie, cranberry and ham sandwich which tasted out of this world. Lovely cakes to be had but we were so full from what we had we will just have to try them on our next visit. Great little place, staff very helpful and friendly, will definitely be back.

Really good busy wee place. clean and tidy with a large choice in the menu. My wife and I popped in for a bite with the kids and each had something different from soup to a full breakfast. We were delighted with the service and the food was excellent.
