Caffe Isola in Isle of Wight

What a find in an otherwise disappointing town centre. Excellent coffee across two floors of a former chapel, with an occasional opportunity to see the roasting process upstairs. Good rolls and cakes, and lots of local produce on sale as well as the coffee beans for home use - which they’ll offer to grind for you

Fine for a lunch when shopping. The doorstep sanwiches are very filling. Can get crowded soon after 1200. It is good that local bottled beers are offered, not heavily marketed bland international beers. For wheelchair and walker access thee is a sloped entrance off the side street, but watch out when leaving as it is a steep slope onto the pavement nd road.

I had to kill (excuse the pun) two hours before a funeral and I needed a quiet place with great coffee to read my 'script' (I was the celebrant). This place was perfect. The coffee was excellent as was the service. I could work in peace and nobody hassled me to move on. Imagine my joy when I went upstairs to use the loo and found the wonderful art work upstairs. I went back the next day to purchase three photographs, two cards and a candle. Glorious place.

Came in today for breakfast. We all had different foods.They all looked amazing. The coffees were the standard I would get up in Manchester. Whoever made them , is an excellent barista. Customer service great too. Well done all .

Lovely cafe with good food and friendly staff. However dogs are allowed inside which a find appalling. I was there on a few occasions and twice I have witnessed dog owners having their dogs on their laps and staff didn’t say anything. I don’t think dogs should be allowed in food establishments at all it’s too unhygienic plus you never know how they behave. Please stop doing what suits a lot of dog owners and start thinking logically. I won’t come back until I know dogs aren’t allowed.

I pop in whenever I’m in Newport- on work days it’s my daily treat! Easy take out, quality coffee- far better than any chain coffee shop. Lovely cafe environment for meeting friends, colleagues or family lunch. Recently held my team breakfast morning meeting here and everyone enjoyed croissants or porridge for less than £10 each. Average price of coffee and cake is approx £7. Lunch sandwich and a coffee will cost approximately £11. Friendly staff. Isola is a really nice cafe.

A regular coffee haunt for me. I love the relaxed vibe and the friendly service. Best flat white on the Island. Most recent visit was for the Out on an Island launch - the team were very gracious hosts and the venue was perfect.

Sort your alarm out! Have to listen to that stupid thing go off for hours on end! Bloody joke!!!! No one is going to steal your beans just turn the F****** thing off

This review menu is limiting, I visit Isola very frequently…..in the past I have given a glowing review but I have to be honest and say that things have slipped. I came back to the Uk in early March after 16 months away…..I made a bee 🐝 line to my favourite eatery……. However despite the terrible pandemic we all faced and I accept that rules have relaxed , the tables are not cleaned, it used to be that you would have a member of staff noticing empty tables and cleaning between clients…..this is not the case in fact I have had my food served and had to request dirty cups and plates to be removed from my table ( previous clients)?? Really?? The waiting staff come to your table but do not think to clean you have to ask?? Service has been slow, I’ve had my food order forgotten twice in the past month and ordered more coffee to drink with my forgotten order…. I have been offered a refund I admit BUT I came to eat…..I walk here but my friend pays to park then pays again because we’re delayed by shortcomings in the service…..I will still continue to come here because the food and coffee are excellent quality but come on guys …… sharpen your pencils 🙂

Joint 1st place for best breakfast that I have ever had. In particular the mushrooms are cooked in something incredible (elixir of the gods?:-) ). A firm favourite and will be returning. The hot chocolate is also proper quality.

Initially, the venue seem very artisan and friendly, and the oder was taken quickly. After ordering 3 coffees, it was over 15 minutes before the coffees arrived. I had to go up to the counter to ask why it was taking so long. There appeared to be no shortage of staff, although just one person making drinks. I was told after approaching that there was a lot of take away orders, which appeared to take priority over any one ordering in inside. It's a shame that it appears to be acceptable for customers to wait over 15mins for a order. Not a great experience If you do order a drink, my be need to ask them how long, as if you i had ordered a take away drink would it have been any quicker. When the drinks arrived they were as expected, again shame about the service.

Looks a welcoming cafe eatery but frankly the service is embarrassingly slow, young girls to busy larking about behind the counter to actually provide a prompt service. When I asked why I have to wait at a table for 15 mins for just a cappuccino the staff couldn't care less suggesting a take away might be an idea if I can't wait. Won't go again and I'll be advising those I know not to bother in future.

Ordered two coffees at 2:45pm. Arrived 15:10 Just not quick enough. Was told 10 minutes after I paid. However had to wait longer. Had to clear the table myself - not really busy and not a lot of food Options Staff polite though.

Lovely cafe but very poorly organised! It felt nobody was actually running the place. There seems to be plenty of staff members, but wait times for basic food items much too long - was advised it would take 20 minutes to warm up a ciabatta. Also as they act as a shop as well as a cafe, a customer wanting detailed advice on their perfect choice of coffee beans (fair enough) meant nobody else could take an order for a cup of tea during that time…

Iv been wanting to try here for a long time. And went on Monday morning for a coffee and some breakfast. The coffee was ok, wasn't very hot And the food where do you begin !!! I waited neally half an hr for 2 poached eggs, one piece of really dry toast and 2 bits of bacon that was so crunchy if you dropped it on the floor it would have shattered it was not worth the money in my opinion, !! I left feeling really disappointed. And will not be returning.

I came here with my partner and we both got food and a drink I had a coffee and she had a milkshake the coffee was ok milkshake was good and rich the a lot of the food went for an artistic approach making it have a lot of unnecessary components that seem to take away from it pizza wasn’t brilliant but looked good and the food is a long wait for food that should take 5 mins

Well worth a visit. Wonderful coffee and a great choice of food. The chocolate brownies are to die for. Great atmosphere, good service and central location. Lovely gifts to be found for sale upstairs featuring work by many local artists.

On first glance I assumed this was just a generic hipster coffee shop, it’s so much more. The cheese scones with the cheddar cheese and onion chutney were perfection, the carrot cake was great and the tea was excellent, usually tea from a coffee shop is below par, but this was not the case. A lovely coffee shop with superb food.

This is a real gem within Newport and well worth a visit. The food is really good and the coffee is delicious. Staff are very pleasant and attentive.

Wonderful food, atmosphere, service and location. Everything is made using local produce, and there are locally made items to buy around the café.

First time here, visited for breakfast. What a lovely place. I had continental breakfast and it was absolutely lovely, hubby had doorstop bacon sandwich which was well cooked, spot on he said. Staff were really good too. We will definitely return.

First visit to the island in 21 years and wow what a find. Flat white coffee lovingly made by a family run artisan Italian/ cafe. Amazing cakes large enough to share. Loose leaf tea provided in trendy tea pots. Situated in a an old chapel....

I cannot recommend this amazing coffee shop enough. The atmosphere, the coffee and the food are fabulous. The staff are wonderful and friendly and so helpful. Island Roasted also sold so can taste the IoW from home in Yorkshire

We were pleasantly surprised to find this Caffe in the heart of Newport as it was like stepping into Italy. Home roasted coffee, homemade polenta cakes and patisserie we beautifully displayed. We tried an affogato which was made with delicious ice cream and refreshing. The toasted Chicken Caesar panini was extremely hot and tasty. Highly recommend this venue for a coffee and snack.

Coffee and tea were lovely ,lovely place , unfortunately let down by a member off staff , we asked if we could have some sugar ,she rudely said sugar is downstairs , table service ? I was quite happy to go and get the sugar it was just the attitude, we will come back just wanted to point it out .

Caffe Isola where the food is always great and the service is always accommodating and with a smile. It isn't the fastest service but the food is always on point. Highly recommend visiting if you're in town.

We only had tea, coffee, snacks. All delicious and we went back again. The same. The cafe itself is a nice environment. Lots of care was taken with spaced seating, sanitizing tables etc. We got the impression of a very well managed setup.

This is a great cafe for coffee and cake. We thoroughly recommend it. Great atmosphere, good safe spacing, efficient service. The polenta cake is always delicious and we are spoilt for choice. We think about this cafe when we are away from here and look forward to coming back. Not disappointed but delighted!

The only thing more bland than the service was the coffee. I'm confused. I looked at their website and read what they're about yet saw no evidence of any of it whatsoever. There really is nowhere to get an actual cup of properly made coffee on the island. You ask for a flat white, you get a latte. You ask for a cortado, you get a slightly smaller latte. I'm more angry at myself for continuing with the experience after I was told it was £3.30 for a cortado. That's full on top London prices. In fact I would rarely pay that amount living in London, I thought I'd plough on, though in the vain hope of getting what I was after. After the most unenthusiastic interaction with the staff I was presented with a huge take away cup with a smallish latte inside, albeit with no foam on top. Barely drank any and nearly went back for a refund. I just drove away in the end but needless to say, I won't ever return. I just don't get why it is so hard to train your Baristas properly and employ people that seem to have any kind of enthusiasm for life, let alone coffee.

Thank goodness Caffé Isola is open again...Viviana, Ebony and the team served us the best brunch and coffee we've had in 5 months! Perfectly poached eggs were a delight.The staff are always friendly and helpful, without doubt it is THE best place to eat in Newport.

We visited today with my family to have a breakfast. I choose a salad, my husband had panini and my daughter had a toast with jam. We had amazing coffees and just to be sure that we provide accurate review we tried some cakes. Everything was delicious and good quality, nicely and quickly served. We like the interior of the cafe and when we visit the town again we will definitely come back.

I’ve tried this place far more than enough times now and I don’t think it’s worth it. I’m actually quite annoyed with myself for coming back.The food is always bland but you wouldn’t expect it from looking at the menu. The mushroom pasta with cream has ZERO flavour. £8 and I should’ve gone to M&S after all.The sandwiches do not have enough filling, the quiches are watery, the salad is limp and everything is over £5 so considering what it’s lacking, it’s therefore quite expensive for what you get. The coffee isn’t very nice but people rave about it (I think those reviews are influenced by local superficialities). I’ve had I.O.W. coffee in other cafes and it’s SO much better. The food takes FOREVER to come out and they have a lot of people in the kitchen so it’s frustrating. Staff are not very chipper or even the polite, happy sort you expect to find in a customer service role.Plus the cups are chipped, the coffee spoons are always stained and dirty and they have really tiny milk jugs and big cups. It’s like, I ordered coffee with milk, not a black coffee, you see? I think it’s fair to say, I don’t like this place and shan’t be returning.

Went here with my husband. He had a slice of Rocky Road and coffee and I had a Spiced Rooibos tea, all delicious. Lovely atmosphere and staff very friendly.

Stopped in for coffee and cake; very modern environment. Quite funky and cool! I had a scone and jam and husband had a traybake. Coffees very good. Table service was good despite we had arrived during the busy breakfast service.

I've been here a few times but I shan't be going anymore, the staff are unhelpful and everything you order arrives at the table in 5 minute slots rather than all at once. Your food is cold by the time your slightly warm coffee arrives and none of the staff seem to care.

Another perfect latte and Americano . This is the best coffee on the Island by far. Well done everyone especially the baristas.

Popped in at the weekend for a quick latte. It was perfect, as usual, beautiful coffee, good quality beans, properly roasted, and then with the skill of their great baristas, perfectly made all at the correct temperatures. Served with a smile, I love this place. Keep up the great work.

My wife and I visited this wonderful place following a recommendation from friends who live on the Isle of Wight. We were not disappointed fabulous Island Roasted Cofffee and excellent food the bacon and mushrooms on toast to die for. We will visit again

Visited for coffee and cake. We love trying different coffees and were really looking forward to it. Lovely shop and range of coffees but ... Service was awful, snail pace! Waited ages for our order. Staff were rude and unwelcoming and even worse had no clue about the different coffees which kind of defeats the object of an artisan coffee shop!

I had poached eggs on toast with a watercress garnish, and a excellent coffee.

Worth a visit just for the building. The coffee is pretty good too. Great atmosphere comfortable seats.

Caffe Isola was our chosen recharge-place while at the Isle of Wight festival. Lovely and welcoming place to enjoy a sitdown breakfast and charge phones. I loved the ham and brie brioche while my friends opted for the avocado on toast. Several coffees later we were ready to face the music and crowds of the IoW 2019 again.

Wonderful renovation of this historic building, full of individual interest and streets ahead of the dreaded corporate chain venues. Excellent service from all staff, such an improvement of the indifferent approach of staff at the previous premises.

Italian feel with fresh roasted coffee

Popped in for coffee at 10.30am on a weekday morning, counted five unsmiling staff standing around chatting to each other and many empty tables. My two coffees still took 15 minutes to arrive with no apology or smile and this was after me going back to the counter to check if they'd forgotten me. Won't be returning.

Visited this busy cafe the other day with my boyfriend

The coffee was great, an iced mocha on a hot day was sublime. My mother had a panini which was really a toasted sandwich, not a complaint because it was a very nice lunch. My wrap was toasted and the contents were lovely, if they stayed in the wrap, since it was a trendy semicircle cut in half meaning I had to eat it like a supersized taco which sort of failed miserably. The floor was ran by one person without table numbers and any guess where we were sat, he went round and asked anyone who didnt have food if it was theirs.

The BLT was plain no mayonaise or butter , regards to the meat platter - type of bread was not asked and I was really against the chutney and butter being in one dish. I asked at the till about the platter and what was in it the response was very vague. Regards to drinks the coffee was burnt and the chocolate was very plain , when I questioned to the waiter he wasn't very helpful. And corrected me. The staff are not very helpful. I wouldn't go back unfortunately.

It has a nice light and airy feel to the place and the food was tasty, a little overpriced and very slow to arrive despite being well staffed (4 ladies at the kitchen/till) and not particularly busy.

Honestly the best coffee I've had on the south coast. I've gone to over 50+ cafes and not found a coffee that comes close to the taste and quality of Isola. What's even better is the selection of coffee you can buy. The Green Espresso blend is superb and without a doubt the best one. The price is good for a cafe not that expensive but also not the cheapest but that's because of the quality. Also very modern and a beautiful interior to just relax and enjoy good coffee and good food

Went for mother’s day cake mezze, cakes were nice, service was terrible, had booked a table and was just told that’s table and the number had to ask where that was as first visit here and didn’t have a clue, ordered 2 cake mezze and got rudely told that they had only prepared one and would now have to do another, although the table was booked for 5 and the platter only does 2 people, only received one plate, no knife so had to ask for more, and then they missed out drinks on our order so had to chase that, no smiles or customer service from any of the staff will not be revisiting

Visited for down cake and espressos. Really impressed with the ample selection of vegan homemade cakes ! We had the carrot cake which was really delicious!

Food took over 25 mins to arrive

I love this place, very spacious and clean. Small but interesting menu. It seems that most things are sourced locally. Our lunch arrived quickly and was lovely and it was great to have homemade cake to follow. I give this place a great big 5! Thanks.

We are so happy about Isola deciding to extend their menu. We call here regularly for a coffee fix but now enjoy piping hot bowls of porridge or eggs poached to perfection with bacon and toast. Whatever we choose here is consistently well done, everything coming together at the table. There are always variations where food is produced freshly but the fact that Isola is consistently well above average demonstrates Viviana's eye for detail and local produce as well as the team's desire to perform well. A perfect little piece of Newport that would easily be as popular in any 'villagey' area of a big city. Perfect food, perfect coffee.

Enjoyed a lovely coffee which was served to us very quickly even though it was quite busy being lunchtime. The food being served looked delicious which I understand is mainly local. Staff very helpful and efficient. Very interesting building as it was once a chapel and converted very tastefully.

Caffe Isola is pretty as a picture - when I saw it from the car when we first arrived in Newport, I wanted to try it. Went for brekkie this morning and loved the beautiful space and local produce and crafts for sale. I was expecting there to be loads of freshly baked breads, croissants & pastries available, so was a tad disappointed with the breakfast menu. Had avocado & poached eggs on toast & hubby had a cheese & ham brioche. Food was a tad pricey - came beautifully presented but wasn't anything special. Coffee was good though. A nice place to stop and take in the ambience but it felt a bit like style over substance.

As a family, we went mid afternoon and had to wait for a seat which proves how popular the cafe is. Very nice decor and nice having the main cafe making station in the middle. Service was a little slow but it was very busy. The tea was £2.20, expensive for a tea but tasty. Very good coffee especially as it was roasted by the cafe. Beautifully made by the barista, a pleasure to drink. Seats were quite hard but a very well decorated place. Worth a visit.

Popped in for a quick coffee and some of their delicious looking cakes but despite waiting several minutes was totally ignored by the staff. One young woman glanced in my direction but then proceeded to wash her hands and chat to a colleague. I waited a while longer but couldn't get served so walked 100m to Costa where I was served immediately by a smiley Italian woman. Well done Costa!!!

We arrived and the cafe was busy which is usually a good sign, ordered 2 hot chocolates and a breakfast each one breakfast turns up at the table on its own before the drinks, 5 minutes later no sign of the other meal coming so we asked and were told “yeah it’s very backed up in the kitchen” unless this is a new thing we aren’t aware of don’t people like to eat together? Would have happily waited for both to be ready, Hot chocolate tasted like sugary milk with lumps of chocolate powder at the bottom. Won’t be back in a hurry as we ended up going to Starbucks for a decent drink, thought it should be the other way around! Such a shame.

Our first visit to Casa Isola and it won't be our last. Good coffee, good atmosphere and very pleasent surroundings. The normal tables and chairs but also bar stool type seating along one window and one side of the open plan kitchen and serving area. Free wifi...which was very fast....and a large area for eating and drinking. Good decor and lots of nice decorative touches throughout the restaurant making Caffe Isola a great place to have coffee and cakes.

A busy local coffee shop - for a good reason. This is the place to get locally roasted fresh coffee that makes the American chains taste bland and yucky. They serve a whole range of sandwiches and snacks but the real reason to go here is for their coffee. I now rarely go anywhere else when in Newport. It gets very busy and they really need to pull their finger out and get the upper seating area opened. It’s been “coming soon” for nearly a year now and is desperately needed.

Breakfast is now served and having had an early appointment this morning we thought.......Mmmm where shall we go, Isloa was our first thought wonderful soft poached eggs, lovely bacon and nice thick toast, and thick porridge, with berries and honey...just a great day to catch up with food and keep going for the rest of the day. Isola as well as their Italian Sicilian roots are also making use of fresh locally sourced ingredients

Tried this place but won’t be returning!

They really have done a great job. They used have a small shop that always did nice coffee and food but was a little cramped. Now they have continued with the nice coffee and food but in really nice surroundings. This is tone of the top places to go for a cup of Coffee in Newport

Ate lunch there today with a friend. The service was efficient and the vegan wrap I ordered , delicious. I liked the atmosphere which could have been enhanced with relaxing background music ( like you get in the bar culture in cities) . I like this cafe . It’s got a simple yet elegant feel .

Stumbled upon Caffe Isola whilst shopping in Newport and we were not disappointed.

Would love to be able to praise this place more as it has a good atmosphere. The last three visits have been disappointing. Ordered coffee and toast, so nothing complicated. The coffees arrived in a few minutes but the toast took over 10 minutes so had to be eaten after coffee was either finished or cold. Three times now, so not an isolated incident. Several weeks before, I had finished my coffee and decided to go up and get a refund on the toast as it had still not arrived after nearly 20 minutes. The coffee blend they use is good but a cappuccino is just a latte in a cup rather than a glass, with the option to have chocolate sprinkled on top. I realise there is some latitude in how to make a cappuccino but I would expect more than 3mm of foamed milk on top. I do hope they can fix these issues and I'll keep coming back.

I thought that this coffee shop had been open for a couple of weeks as the service was just so appallingly slow. We ordered two coffees and two pastries and we waited for over 20 minutes. It was painful to watch other people being served and the waiting staff (who were nice but just not efficient at all) try and match orders to tables. In the end we asked for our coffees to be made to take-away and they were then done in under two minutes.

Good selection of panini's and pizza for a light lunch. Very spacious though we struggled to find a table for 4. Good modest prices, I think the pizzas were especially good value for money.

Lovely feel to this airy, spacious caffe and the coffee tastes great. Child/family friendly. Cappuccino, iced cappuccino and babyccino all tasted good. As did the chocolate caramel slice.

This place is beautifully spacious and the former church has been stylishly refurbished. Their own roasted coffee is excellent and a good choice of vegan milks is very considerate. Open for early breakfast till 6, the food is fresh and tasty, with lots of daily specials.

This place really does set the standard of what a first class coffee shop should be. As well as great coffee the food is fresh and delicious and the staff friendly and efficient. The shop itself is lovely outside and in with plenty of seating (while we were there on Thursday I noticed a sign indicating additional seating space upstairs will be opened soon). Lots of coffee related goods to buy too as well as local produce from other food businesses. We visit the Isle of Wight regularly and Caffe Isola is now on our must-visit list while we're over. Thanks for the brilliant service :)

Our excellent cappuccinos were accompanied by spiced plum frangipane tart and greatly enjoyed. The café is lovely and service very good.

Lovely coffee. We both had the brie and ham brioche for breakfast which was relatively small but with huge amounts of cheese! The staff there told me the coffee is roasted on the premises and it certainly was tasty.

Went in today for two reasons... One, for a coffee and a bite to eat with my partner and, two, to get some Island Roasted coffee... Succeeded on both counts. The food was lovely and the coffee (cappuccino, latte and espressos) was amazing. Spoke at length to a nice chap about the single origin coffees they sell - which led to a very enjoyable espresso tasting session - and walked away with a couple of bags of beans. A quality of coffee and coffee knowledge that is often claimed but rarely experienced... will definitely be going back...

Nice new cafe in Newport great food but a little expensive for what it is so if you fancy a treat then it’s worth it but can be costly if done regularly also they do need to learn how to clear tables better and clean them down as it’s not great staff need proper training

I read an article about this cafe in the Wightlink magazine and wanted to check it out. My mother-in-law enjoys a good coffee and was very satisfied, as was I.

Went out for lunch with my husband, friend and 6 week old baby , which for me felt like a big achievement and I was really excited to get out . I’d been to the old place a few times and I was interested to see what it was like now. The decor is great and very open , plenty of space to plonk a pram , coffee was good but the thing I can’t stop thinking about is the food . I had a really tasty pizza and my friend has a great looking cheese and meat board too . Will definitely be visiting again soon .
