Stopped in for some drinks when trying to plan our day trip. What a kind, warm and welcoming team they made us feel so at home and couldn’t have been nicer. The menu looked amazing even though we were too early for lunch wouldn’t hesitate to stop back in for a bite to eat. It’s a cosy atmosphere and a busy wee place so booking a table would be advised

Found this little gem of a place just off the high street. It was a perfect stop for our lunch. We both had coronation chicken, the bread was very fresh and we really enjoyed it. The selection of cakes were too nice to resist. The orange drizzle loaf was perfect, it tasted delicious. My partner had the toffee & walnut, which he said was delicious too. The staff were very polite and friendly. Would definitely recommend this to anyone visiting Kirkwall or the Orkney’s.

Called in for lunch and food was very good. While we were there a couple who were friends of the owner/chef came in and although the were wearing masks they didn’t use the hand sanitiser. The lady went straight into the kitchen area and hugged the owner and then proceeded to stand in there and chatted while the owner prepared our food. I pointed this out to the waitress and said I thought they should use the sanitiser. She did nothing about it and the couple continued to sit at a table chatting to the owner. Then another member of staff came in, put on a mask and apron but didn’t sanitise his hands and proceeded to help out in the kitchen. I’ve given it a poor rating because of the above.

Because the premises are small and social distancing not possible, Cafe Lolz is only doing takeaways at the moment. So, if you want soup, sandwiches, scones, homebakes and excellent coffee, this is the place. Soup, sandwiches must be ordered in advance - coffee, a scone, and homebakes can be had without ordering. However a pre - order from the website means your order is waiting when you come to pick up.Had a picnic with a friend in her garden this week and sampled the cullen skink, thai sweet potato soup, egg sandwich, coronation chicken sandwich and a to die for salted caramel brownie. Have also sampled the salad box - full of yummy things Otolenghi style.Sandwiches are packed in a cardboard carton so easy to put in a backpack if going for a long walk.

After 3 days in Orkney we were feeling a little vegetable deprived and keen to find a good healthy salad for lunch. Cafelolz topped the TripAdvisor recommendations: our choice the ‘house speciality’ chicken and cashew salad - 1 each. The salad was a good, honest traditional vegetable salad with a pleasant enough balsamic-based dressing served separately. It lacked any flair or excitement and was certainly not in the league of contemporary international salad bars we have grown used to at home and on our travels. But the killer was the warm grilled chicken pieces which were dry and tough and only eaten out of hunger. Our guess was that they had been cooked before lunch service began and kept under a food warmer until served for our late-ish lunch. Not good enough by any standards.
