Excellent Sunday pub lunch - great value for money. The meal was served by friendly efficient staff who knew their stuff! I was especially interested to be there as I worked there 60 or so years ago - pre-fire and many re- arrangements. Glad to report I found the place in fine fettle and recommend warmly.

Stopped here for lunch. Unfortuneately just after ordering the computer system failed and wiped out all the orders, however, the staff quickly resolved the problem and got back on track. While the food was good and the staff friendly the place appears to be in need of a bit of attention. As the hotel is under new management they are planning to improve things in the future. It is a nice hotel in a very good location.

This was a vast improvement on previous visits, but the staff, delightful as they were, needed at least an extra waiter/waitress to cope with the sheer volume of numbers. The food was basic but well cooked and well presented on the whole. The "open sandwich" was a tad basic and could have done with double the quantity of cheese.

We ate here one evening and were very disappointed. Food took over an hour to come and when it arrived each of our dishes was wrong....I ordered prawn curry and they dished up chicken, and my girls had asked for burgers without bbq sauce and the burgers came out smothered in it. We sent it all back and when it came out a second time my rice was stone cold as were my daughters’ chips. The staff were lovely and very apologetic - but something was clearly badly awry in the kitchen and the waitresses were trying to keep a brave face on things. The puds were mediocre and pricey. We won’t be going back.

We had just been to visit Skara Brae and the Ring of Brodgar, travelled back in the direction of Stenness and the standing stones and found this hotel/restaurant/pub. The menu is of the pub fare variety, quite reasonable. There is an option of a jacket potato or sandwich on a choice of breads - including pannini, wrap, etc. - with a choice of two fillings from a long list, so there should be something there to please just about everyone. Other larger hot meals on offer in addition to sandwiches as well. Good sized portions. My husband said the side salad was the best he'd had on the island.

We stopped here for lunch while on tour of the island as part of a group. The staff worked hard to get our lunches (40) to us in a timely manner. The tomato soup was the star of the show. Fried langostinos were overly breaded in my opinion. The cheese and tomato sandwich was interesting (not toasted). But the location was great for a quick bite before going to Standing Stones. Get the ice cream. It was excellent.

Met up with a friend for a lunch and catch up. We both had soft drinks and a baked potato with cheese. It was perfect. The potato and filling was lovely, the potato was hot and the side salad was lovely abd fresh, crunchy lettuce, lots of freshly cut salad vegetables and a delicious mustard and honey dressing. The restaurant was empty so we werent disturbed. The lady from the front desk checked on us 3 times to make sure were werent' waiting on anything else. Lovely service.

Unfortunately, we did not have a good experience here. We arrived on a quiet Monday night with our 2 daughters. There were only three other tables dining (albeit one was a table of 11) yet we waited an hour and 10 minutes for our starters. The staff did apologise after an hour blaming the large table, so I would hate to see how long you'd wait on a busy night! Once they finally arrived, the two nacho starters were extremely oily to the point where my daughters couldnt eat them. My soup was ok but roast veg tasted simply of cabbage. We did mention the oily nachos to the staff but there was no apology or amendment to the bill. The mains came (beef and ale pie) and they were ok but a little bland and reminded me of school dinners. The kids sausages were white inside and grizzly so they were also left. The puddings were very good and the staff were pleasant enough but it didnt make up for the long wait and below average starters and mains. We paid the £70+ bill begrudgingly.

This place was a great retreat a couple of times, after being out in the Orkney cold and damp for hours Food, alcohol, good coffee, much needed loos, (which were clean btw). Staff friendly. Food - basic but good - the fishfinger sandwich was a surprise - they are not the thin, breaded, Birdseye type, but large pieces of battered cod between a bap! Great but unexpected! There is a more extensive meal menu I think. It apparently gets booked up, as does a lot of accommodation on Orkney, long in advance. Agreat location. I really liked the bar - easy going, spacious, Have not stayed there.

We arrived here just as two tour buses were departing. The staff was more focused on cleaning and clearing than on serving, but a friendly wave got their attention. We had a decent meal at a fair price. Was it the best food ever, ever? No. Was it satisfactory? Absolutely. It is hard to even think they had any food in the kitchen after serving 100 people, but they did! And there were other tables being served as well. I think they handled the rush quite nicely. Rather than cook on a sunday evening we decided to go for a run round the west mainland and have a high tea at the Standing Stones in Stenness on the way home to Kirkwall. We arrived at 5pm and there were already some diners. There appeared to be only one young lass serving and sh was obviously very busy. We waited a moment for her to clear a table for us. The menu is fair , good home cooking staples - sausage, beans and chips or bacon, macaroni, scampi or chicken. I ordered the chicken, stuffing and chips my dining companion ordered the macaroni. We also ordered soft drinks and our fears that the waitress hadn't written anything down were realised when the wrong drinks arrived. This was quickly and easily corrected. After a very short wait our food arrived. While it was not a huge plateful you have to realise that it is a high tea and that you must save room for cakes! When we were done with the mains we got a generous pot of tea and were let loose on the cakes! The advert in the local paper said "as many cakes as you can eat" so I took them at their word - turns out my limit is 5!! All in the food was fine the service was ok (especially when our waitress got back up) I would return if I was hungry whilst passing but wouldn't go out of my way to go back. On a plus the cakes were fresh and homemade.

Firstly, I don't like writing negative reviews, but after much thought I should. We went for lunch on a Sunday at about 2pm. We were given a bar menu and asked if we needed a high chair for our baby. The high chair was dirty - there were old dried up veg in the seat seams, and it was really awkward aroung the table too. We have special dietary requirements: vegetarian with dairy, egg and soya allergies (baby has allergies and we breastfeed) which we explained to the waitress. After checking with the chef I was offered jacket potato with bean chilli (no surprise there!), which we ordered, my husband had a steak. The tiny spud appeared with burned veg chilli which was so hot I scolded my mouth and had a blister for a week. Plus there were cheese and onion crisps on the plate. After months of looking out for milk, egg and soya on food packaging I know there is milk in the flavoring. I would think a chef would know this too. Husbands steak was ok, unseasoned and standard accompaniments, but not worth the price. He had my crisps.I went to change the baby and found the buckle on the table broken into a sharp point - not impressed.Husband asked about desserts for us and was offered Swedish glacé which contains SOYA! The waitresses were pleasant, but had no idea of the ingredients in the meals and it appears neither did the chef. There was very little atmosphere, we were neither greeted or said goodbye to. I asked my husband to complain whilst I was seeing to the baby, but he didn't as he doesn't like to make a fuss. It's a lovely looking hotel with lovely views. There's loads of empty parking spaces, I now know why. I would not recommend on the basis of our experience.

when we arrived there was a wait to find any staff, menu was basic but ample, placed our order at the bar as again no staff about. Our daughters dinner was that burnt it was black, could only eat half of it, complained but never even offered to compensate the meal. Steak pie was poor- meat was lovey and cooked well but veg was over cooked and dried up, pastry turned to crumbs as soon as you cut it as again over done. Fish was ok but batter really soggy. We had eaten in a few places over Orkney this week and this was the poorest by far.

We had lunch at the Standing Stones Hotel. The outside façade is great but the inside doesn't reflect this. The service is terrible as is the food. A club sandwich, with one piece of bread with topping that looked like it had been thrown on wasn't a good sight and tasted terrible. The only saving grace was the locally made, creamy ice creams with some unusual combinations, like apple pie flavour and of course the beer was good too.

We phoned to see if we needed to book a table and it was recommended we did. On entering via the bar which is dark and unattractive with very functional tables and little natural lights. A couple of local worthies helped by calling out for a waitress to be aware we had arrived. This waitress did not seem to know we were coming and suggested we eat in the bar - as this was rather dingey it was not what we wanted for a special meal out.The young waitress was friendly and trying to be accommodating she checked out if we could choose from the A La Carte menu although she said this was not usually possible until 45mins after we had booked. She also suggested we could sit in the lounge area with a choice of sofas and lots of natural light plus some dinner tables. Service was prompt and pleasant. We ordered steak and ale pie with vegetables and potatoes. We assumed the vegetables would be seasonal but were served roast parsnip batons and red cabbage. There were 3 boiled small- medium potatoes in their skins. The steak and ale pie was luke warm and certainly not the temperature food should be served at according to food safety regulations. No one could have probed it to check the temperature. We could not eat this and asked for it to be warmed up. As one of us had not wanted the parsnips, no alternative was offered. Another member of staff took the food away and it came back properly warmed and it seemed with additional pie filling. The beef tasted delicious and I would assume is local to Orkney. For dessert, one of us had the chocolate orange bread and butter pudding which sounded lovely but failed to deliver. The other dessert was a mango something or other that I was told would be like a syllabub. It looked attractive but again was disappointing and had a slightly fizzy taste which I was not sure was the beginning of a fermentation of the fruit going past its best... We did not stay for tea or coffee. Considering the high quality of food and cooking available across Orkney and the local food produced, this restaurant is not one we would want to return to as it is at present.

This doesn't sound like the same place as either the June reviews or our visit last summer. The decor has been altered in a bizarre way eg the odd bench seats block the lower halves of wall posters and windows.Food is more limited than last year and we were told by the very nice waitress that it was a new menu and her first day - not a good start. The various flashing machines and screens are very intrusive so we just had a beer and a couple of veg curries which, to be fair, were well prepared and cooked; we chose not to have chips with the rice! All very perplexing.

The guest house owner suggested the Standing Stones and from we arrived we were not disappointed. A very nice waitress called Charlotte came and not only took our orders but explained what was in each dish as we are diabetic and gluten free respectively. The food was well cooked and served with a smile by Charlotte who also asked if we needed any advice on where to find tourist sites. We asked several questions and she guided us on a map and suggested the best routes to get there. She even was able to tell me that Stromness FC had two pitches and which one they would be using that night. She came back twice as we were eating to check if we needed anything and another waitness also came over to see if everything was fine. After such good attention I was reluctant to go back in case the second visit didn't live up to the first one but we did return and got a different waitress, Tanya by name, who was in every way as good. She again explained what was in each dish and even checked with the chef to see if there was anything gluten free not on the printed menu. The restaurant was very busy but she found time to come back twice to see if we needed anything. The service was so good that the quality of the food was almost incidental but the four main meals and two starters we tried were all very well cooked and presented. If anyone if going to Orkney I would thoroughly recommend this restaurant - on the main road from Finstown to Stromness.

This small community is to drive through, and not a destination. Because of the hour, we elected to stop here for dinner. The scallops were outstanding and the steaks were nothing less than perfect. A selection of food items for kids simplified our stop, and the selection of beers and ales made it even more interesting.

Just back from staying 3 nights in the wonderful very dog friendly Lynnfield Hotel in Kirkwall. We have stayed in several other hotels in Kirkwall but none of them came up to the standard of the Lynnfield Hotel. Malcolm and his staff couldn’t have made us feel more welcome than they did. Our room, the Melsetter Suite was just wonderful. A fantastic mira shower and a space age jacuzzi bath etc etc! The food was simply delicious. We had intended eating elsewhere on one of the nights but after dinner in the Lynnfield Hotel the first night we continued to eat in house for the duration of our stay. For dog owners, look no further. All the staff are very dog friendly. Rusty our Welsh terrier can’t wait to go back! Very highly recommended.
