Helgi's in Orkney Islands

Good quality good but not a lot. Had to order more chips.

The only saving grace of this place is the cosy atmosphere and the fantastic serving staff - the woman and her son who served our drinks and took our order were lovely and personable and clearly excel at their jobs. Unfortunately, that is where the excellence ends. You would think that a full booked and busy restaurant on the popular harbour front area of Kirkwall, one of the biggest towns in Orkney, would be a sure thing. Guess again. “Creamy mushroom & spinach pasta” turned out to be flavourless, nearly ice cold, soggy penne pasta with barely seasoned macerated mushrooms and spinach slopped on top. The portion size was adequate, though slightly underwhelming, and the small bowl did nothing to add to the presentation. The “chipotle tofu salad” sounded tasty and original but turned out to be lightly fried, completely flavourless cubes of tofu (white in the middle, so no marination occurred, and that’s all it takes to make tofu taste good!) tossed on top of a handful of salad leaves. The katsu mayo was nice though. The starter of “risotto balls” was actually really tasty, but with three balls presented over a spoonful of salad, you would expect quality (as opposed to quantity!). Generally speaking, when you see small portion sizes you would expect qualify and superior flavour, to make up for the lack of quantity! Neither quality or quantity were present in this meal. I want to reiterate that the serving staff are amazing, and the young lad handled our complaint like a pro (politely and with grace), but apparently “cold and flavourless” didn’t warrant a free meal or even a discount, because we had touched our food - this was the excuse of the kitchen staff anyway. I’m not sure how a customer is supposed to know they’re disappointed in the flavour, temperature, and consistency of their food without trying it!? Eventually the server came back to say we could have a free desert or our drinks could be comped. That’s better. Not wanting to try any more of their food, we opted for comped drinks and made a hasty exit. DO NOT EAT HERE. Just buy drinks, especially the “Harbourside Gin” cocktail, and tip your servers! That is all. Goodnight.

Very pleasant little food stop. Good food too.obviously popular with the locals and visitors alike.

Met up with friends for dinner recently, we picked Helgi's as it used to be great for food, however we came away feeling disappointed. I ordered the hake but when it arrived I was surprised to see such a small portion, certainly not worth £21.95. Perhaps adding some veg/salad would enhance the dish. Others on the table were also disappointed with the small portions sizes. Desserts were ok but not great. I won't be returning in a hurry, unless I hear that things have improved. .

We rang 3 times to book a table, but with no reply. Turned up anyway. Told they were fully booked and to busy to answer the phone ! Not best pleased, You make up your own mind .

Lovely food, but we didn't realise that the table we'd booked was only for just over an hour. We had a table booked for a certain time, which we were seated down to later than expected, we didn't mind that, but after having a 3 course meal and luckily for us we were rushing to leave when a member of staff came to us saying oh good, we were coming to ask you to leave as we have others wanting your table. Didn't realise they had seating upstairs, and sadly, it had no atmosphere like downstairs in the bar.

Arrived for our prebooked table at 8pm.Was TOLD where our table was upstairs , so made our way to it. Waited for TWENTY MINUTES and no one even approached our table to ask for our order, drinks or otherwise. Service staff did speak to other diners and clear a table behind us but totally ignored us. Decided to leave after waiting 20 minutes and went to a nearby Chinese restaurant. Much better service and good food. Helgi's need a manager who oversees staff to ensure no diners are waiting without even a drink. Very poor service in need of Gordon Ramsay !!!

Enjoyable evening at this harbour side pub/restaurant. High standard pub food in a nice atmosphere with friendly staff. Worth booking on busy nights.

Good food on offer, reasonably priced. Service is friendly and helpful. Would happily eat here any time. No dogs allowed, as it should be where food is served, which is a pleasant bonus.

Great little bar/restaurant in the centre of town. We had dinner and the food was excellent. Congrats to the 2 young waitpersons who did a great job with serving. We'll worth a visit but you will need to book when the cruise ships are in Port!

London beer prices, and 'fully booked' despite empty tables that didn't fill. 'Can we eat at the bar?' 'No, we don't do that'.

We had a nice dinner at Helgi's. It may be for the tourists, but I couldn't resist ordering the Highland Chicken. The haggis stuffing complemented the chicken nicely, but the potato base was the standout feature. Fabulous flavour and texture. I didn't love the decor, but it's all a matter of taste. They have a pretty good selection of non alcoholic drinks - better than almost anywhere I've been to, so deserve much credit for that.

On the advice of the B&B where we are staying, we reserve a table for the evening. The menu is very long, no wine list (except for a mention of non-alcoholic wines). When we come to take the order, we ask if there is “normal” wine, yes we are told, no way of knowing what it is. We end up with a glass of really not great white wine. We ask for a seafood platter indicated on the menu. There isn't one. After thinking about it, I go for pasta, my husband for chicken. Still not ready. I ask what is available instead, it will go faster, I am told in short that a good third of the card is not available. We fall back on burgers, which we wanted to avoid because in short, there is nothing else. 1 without onion (allergy) and the other with cheese. Both with sweet potato rather than fries. The waiter repeats in front of us. Our burgers arrive with normal fries and onions. Avoid if you want to have a good evening

The best local pub with food in the port. Not large and popular so you have to book on busy days for dinner. Mostly meat dishes but the daily menu can be fish platter or so. Pub drinks pub wine.

I feel this place has to make its mind up whether it is gong to be a bistro or a cocktail bar. The place was heaving, mainly with drinkers, and the general air of chaos was not reassuring. I had a table upstairs which was good (away from the crowds!). Service was slow, and the service staff appeared young and inexperienced. It was obvious they did not know which tables they were responsible for, as I was asked twice had I ordered (as were other clients). I was not offered water for the table, any sides, nor a dessert after my main course. The main course (a single dish, which was all I wanted) of a pasta concoction, was brought up by an older person, who plonked it down in front of me, without any comment at all, as if she was feeding her cat. Being an older person on my own, I was made to feel a nuisance taking up a whole table, while there were queues downstairs. Sorry, but that's life. The pasta was pale, the sauce was green, and the spinach was green (as you would expect) but set in a dark green dish as well, looked awful. Tasted okay but I was glad to leave it at that. If you are short of staff and can't give the service you advertise, then cut what you are offering, and stick to the drinks.

Incorrect signage, signage is misleading customers, according to signage food served until 9PM which is not true.

Terrible experience. Very slow service. Food tasted terrible. Ordered a birthday cake for my sister in laws birthday. Followed up several times including on arrival at the restaurant. Was told everything was in hand. Asked for surprise cake to be served at end of meal. Sat for 30 minutes and no cake arrived. Asked for bill. Still no cake. Left restaurant and complained to lady who said cake was “in hand” and she said cake was there but did not know it was time to serve. Clearly no coordination or communication with serving staff?? Every aspect was disappointing. We booked this restaurant because of good ratings, but clearly something has happened at this establishment and the ratings do not reflect current performance. Beware of the ratings. I sent an e mail to restaurant about issues and received no response clearly they do not care.

Had to wait an hour for our food to arrive, even had to confirm inbetween what we ordered. Had to ask for a glass of tap water TWICE and then go to the bar again to get it. The waiters were lovely guys but it seems their service is inefficient. Heard other tables around me get wrong orders or get information about non available food halfway through their stay. Food was decent, but a bit basic. My mom ordered a chipotle tofu salad, which was literally salad leaves, chipotle sauce and some tofu chunks. We would have made it better at home. The bar itself looks lovely and feels cozy, but the service needs to improve. Long waiting times and wrong orders. Also the kitchen for lunch closes at 2:30 PM?!

Nice staff and atmosphere in a friendly Kirkwall pub. Food was also good with good selection on the menu. Would recommend the chicken stuffed with haggis

Very popular pub! Had to have dinner at 5pm to get a spot. Great atmosphere and friendly service. Simple meals, but tasted great. Also great cocktails. Highly recommended if visiting Orkney, but make sure you book!

Right off the water, great pub feel with tasty meal options. Disregard the boast that they serve food all day as dinner does not start until 5pm.

Local to Orkney but never been to Helgi's. Booked lunch for a Birthday, on the specials board was a seafood platter, £16.95. Arrived with bite size 2 pieces of fish, mackerel and salmon and some white crab in the middle. This was on a small plate, not a platter, complained before eaten and asked to change, was told no I'd still have to pay for it. Even the waiter agreed it should be a starter and not on a small plate. Was also told no one had complained before, although there's another review the same on here. Not interested in complaint and no resolution or change. Won't be back. Feedback, thanks for the reply, the fact it was complained about before eaten, also wasn't mentioned it was a starter when complained or on the board, advertised as a platter and a special..and told I'd have to pay for it isn't good customer service at all. Was only brought up as the server said it should really be a starter.. There's no way I'd be paying that amount for a starter and should have been mentioned at the time. Also was told it hadn't been complained about before, yet, on trip advisor there's many saying the same. Sorry but it should have been taken off the bill.

I booked dinner at Helgi's because I was looking for a restaurant in Kirkwall that served vegetarian dishes. This turned out to be a mistake. The Thai tofu curry, which was listed on the online menu, was not on the menu at the restaurant. I ordered the spinach and mushroom pasta instead and was promptly told that the kitchen had used it up. It was not yet 7 p.m. (so, early to run out of main dishes), and isn't pasta an odd thing to run out of? At this point, I froze up, because I really needed a vegetarian main dish and Helgi's wasn't making it easy. I wished I could order an appetizer as a main course, but a woman at the next table tried to do that, and the waitress gave her a very hard time. Finally, I ordered the vegetable fajitas. The waitress asked what kind of chips I wanted. I was puzzled (at first I thought she meant tortilla chips), but I said just the regular ones. The upshot of all this was that I got mediocre fajitas that were very short on vegetables and a mediocre glass of wine, and I was charged extra for chips (French fries) that I didn't want in the first place. Helgi's: you must either get serious about offering vegetarian food or stop claiming that you can accommodate vegetarians. If you're running out of the vegetarian or healthier main courses early in the evening, that is a sign that you are not offering enough vegetarian or vegetable-forward dishes. Don't try to make dishes like fajitas if you cannot do them well. And finally, talk to the waitresses about accommodating customers' needs politely and not trying to trick them into ordering extra food.

We just had a fabulous meal and wee drink.

There were empty seats on the first floor but we were told to go upstairs. This was okay but we are in our mid to late 60’s. All tables had “reserved” signs in them. When a young man came to take our order he did not know what beer they had and it wasn’t in the menu so my husband had to go back downstairs and find out what they had. Then we placed our orders for food and only one of the four of us got what we ordered. The soup was actually pretty good but the sandwiches my husband and I received were very skimpy and not on the bread we ordered. Ham and cheese sandwich had one very thinly sliced piece of ham and about 1/4 cup of shredded cheese. Would have preferred it as a slice or melted so it didn’t fall out while eating. Wouldn’t recommend eating here.

stopped here for an authenic scottish lunch and were not disappointed. ordered a shot of the local whisky, a local beer, a haggis sandwich (made by local butcher they said) and a fish sandwich. great staff and the food was terrific! even enjoyed the haggis

This is an atmospheric place in a gorgeous position overlooking the harbour. We had delicious smoked fish and delicious chicken..Both gorgeous and freshly cooked. The service was brilliant too. Couldn't have been better.

Dinner here was the food highlight of our trip to Orkney. The chicken breast stuffed with haggis and served with a creamy mushroom sauce was, to use a somewhat hackneyed phrase, "amazing"! Great atmosphere too.

At Helgi's, very fresh products from the sea are served to the table. We had the excellent Seaplatter as a starter, the only complaint about it was the steep price of £16.95. The fish and chips were absolutely top, the fish was certainly freshly caught and tasted simply great. Our request for crispy chips was accepted by the very friendly wait staff and implemented in the kitchen. You can't go wrong with fish and chips at Helgi's, it was excellently prepared and of outstanding quality.

A seafood restaurant, I think not!!!. A seafood platter with three things on it, never. Poor service and food.

Great bar with a brilliant aesthetic but unfortunately we got unlucky with a drunking guy acting the fool witch really killed the atmosphere and emptied the bar pretty fast..

The front bar is like an old local Good atmosphere and very welcoming. Not a boozer for a first date but great for an after work pint.

Our burgers were dry and when we asked the staff about it there was almost no response. There are certainly better places with friendlier staff and better food in Kirkwall.

Good selection of beers on tap (only stopped in for a quick drink) but perfunctory service and very little atmosphere.

I will prefix this review by saying we try hard to always give good reviews or none at all…but this is an exception. I really wanted to give Helgi’s a 5-star review after the good reviews I had seen elsewhere. But…..service was patchy, at best, and food was good but not great pub fare. The staff - three for bar and tables seemed overwhelmed and running around. yet customers waiting and waiting. This place is not big, so it’s not customer numbers. Watching them for awhile (and we had a LOT of wait time), we worked out they didn’t seem to have a proper system; all staff were doing bar, drinks, orders, serving, clearing, admin and bills. They need to have one person just on bar and drinks and one looking after the 5 downstairs tables and one on the upstairs tables. When we arrived, the more junior waitress/bar person - who was very friendly - completely ignored us after pointing out our reserved table. Serving others that arrived after us. Then disappearing upstairs…We eventually ordered drinks and meals from another staff member who came to do drinks at the bar. Food came fairly promptly. When we were ready to leave and asked for the bill, the more junior waitress/bar person said sure, will get it for you now. Then proceeded to do other jobs and disappear again. We again went to the bar to ask for/pay bill. Senior staffer apologised saying it had got busy. No it hadn’t, your place wasn’t full (there were empty reserved tables), you just didn’t have a good system. If you did, you could have processed our table a lot quicker - aka normal service levels - and catered for the other people that came and went, giving up on being served at the bar. If I was the owner of this place I’d be annoyed about the below oar service and lost business we witnessed.

Popped in for a bit of lunch. Was told we had to eat upstairs because bar was "full". Full = 1/2 empty. Haggis toastie was pretty good. But..... took 50 minutes to arrive. Wife got soup, and... no spoon. Had to trudge downstairs to retrieve after sullen waiter dropped off food and ran hurriedly away. Kind of a nice pub on main level, typical tables on 2nd story. Atmosphere 4, food 3 or 4, service was a 1. When we left, pub was about 1/3 full.

We wanted to try this place for a couple of days now and the burger is really quite nice. The bath lady was super helpful, and we loved chatting with her about the local hot spots.

Good food, excellent service. Essential that you book as it rare there is an available table for anyone just dropping in.

Unfortunately we were not able to eat or order take away. The waiter said they were overwhelmed and couldn't do either. Which can happen but what left us disappointed was the way they told us. Like they didn't care at all and we were just bothering them. Also the restaurant downstairs was half empty so that let us wonder what they do if they have a full house. It would have been fine if they said they were sorry and please to come back another night or something similar. Please be nice to customer.

After reading the reviews, we were keen to come here, but what a disappointment! It was a very quiet Tuesday night when we visited, but we were still ignored by the two bartenders for most of our visit. My friend and I ordered margaritas which were almost undrinkable - tasted like full glasses of sour mix. Our food was not much better. I had a very strange haggis linguine, which felt like they had forgotten to put the sauce in it, and my friend ordered fajitas, which turned out to be cold tortillas folded next to a bowl of stewed peppers and pepper jelly, along with cold shredded cheese. The ambiance is nice, so maybe this is a great place for a pint, but avoid the food and mixed drinks!

I went with a friend based on a recommendation. From beginning to end the service was poor. Waited at bar to be seated and barmaid continued a conversation with a customer without acknowledging us. We expected to be seated upstairs with harbour view and we were told to sit downstairs. Cocktail offer and not all ingredients available. Food order arrived within 5 mins of ordering and not engagement or communication when food arrived. Food mediocre didn’t live up to expectations and overall felt like an inconvenience. In total we were in the restaurant for half an hour and next time will try the Orcadian restaurant next door which looked much more relaxed and appealing.

They hve got good vegeterian options. I enjoyed the food. Local beers! Plus is place is open till late compared to the small town of Kirkwall. And location is so reachable just in front of the docks with a nearby parking place.

Expectations were high following recommendations from our usually reliable travel agency. On arrival, we stood around and eventually had to ask a not very friendly barman where to go - go upstairs he said - your table is in the lefthand corner! Upstairs was noisy (loud swearing students) and dark ( light globe off over our table). Then waited 20 minutes for an even less friendly/responsive waiter to approach us about food and drinks. Food was actually OK (good solid food and value for money); desserts came without spoons and we could not catch the attention of the waiter to get any. In short, the evening was spoiled by the very poor service, despite some attempts at apology from senior waitress.

Great atmosphere in this cosy wee pub/restaurant. Really good service, decent food and excellent drinks. Scala and Highland Park whisky, Orkney Brewery and the excellent Swannay Brewery beers. Lovely local gins too.

I thought £16 was a lot for a weeny burger and a little tin of fries. It was. But I was charged the wrong bill and spent £35.80 for said burger and two pints. They had to ask before they allowed my service dog in, as well. Did not feel welcome.

Fantastic dinner on our stay in Kirkwall we both had entrees French onion soup and steak tartar , mains were delicious,steak and fish and chips and desert was equally delicious cheesecakes,we were seated in the upstairs with lovely views over the harbour , highly recommend

We visited Helgis twice. The first day was fine, I had some delicious vegan soup of the day and the vegan burger. The service was okay, even though they mistakenly brought us a pint of beer instead of a pot of tea. The second time we went there were two servers which ignored us for about five minutes even though the pub was almost completely empty. They then left from sight and after 10 minutes one server asked us what we wanted to drink. We mentioned that we wanted to eat something as well (this was at 9pm). They then said that the kitchen was only open until 9pm which in my opinion could have been mentioned to us earlier than 10 minutes after we entered so we could have just gone somewhere else.

Went in one evening and was told the restaraunt was fully booked, even though there were clearly places to sit at the bar, and no inclination on wait times, when we could come back, or if we would like to book a reservation. We asked if we could book for the next day and made a reservation for the upstairs dining room. Upon arrival the following day we were given a table on the ground floor (not upstairs as originally reserved) and were met with terrible service. We had to repeat the drink choices four or five times as the gentleman serving us did not understand the menu, we eventually had to point it out on the menu card while he copied it to his notepad. I ordered a classic beef burger with bacon added on which was extremely overcooked, unseasoned, and without bacon. I could not finish the burger and left promptly.

Lamb shank was nothing but fat and gristle. The "tiramisu was just a parfait with raspberries. A big disappointment food wise. The beer was good. Service mediocre

Sitting opposite the harbour in Kirkwall, Helgi's is a great spot to head for lunch. The menu is good, the food is good and the prices are also good! Cheery and attentive service without being intrusive

Arrived a few minutes early for table and waited at bar. Totally ignored for over five minutes. So in the end said hello and got hello back. Waited. In the end greeted and we had to ask if we could get a drink. Drink poured and told our table was ready. We asked for our drink that sat there behind the bar. Not shown to table. Not told what was and wasn’t available. After 20 minutes we were asked if we would like anything. We said we’d like to order. When we ordered the waitress said she wasn’t sure if the fish dish was available and went to the kitchen to check. Came back and said it wasn’t. Gave up at this point. Paid for drinks and left. Had a lovely lovely meal elsewhere and excellent service. Such a shame as we were so looking forward to eating at Helgis. That said we’d spoken to others earlier who’d had a similar experience to us.

We tried to eat here on Saturday evening but they had no free tables. A good sign to be busy. We booked Sunday's lunch online and enjoyed nicely prepared tasty food in the upstairs room. Friendly, efficient, helpful waitress served us in clean nicely decorated premises. We remember when this was a shipping office and a good friend worked here back in the 60s!!!!

Food wasn't the best but the service was very good

Stopped by for food on a Wednesday in September but was fully booked. Had a couple of drinks, and its a small bar but great vibe, staff shaking cocktails and busy. I had one of the 5 local beers on draught, Scapa, a nice hop light ale hand pulled for just over a fiver.

It's a busy place with a lively atmosphere. Unfortunately had to wait a quarter of an hour for our booked table to be vacated. A further hour before food arrived, by which time I was too tired to enjoy it fully.

C'était fantastique, une super surprise d'avoir une cuisine de cette qualité aux Orcades! Le burger était un des meilleurs que j'ai pu manger en Ecosse et mes grand parents venant de France, ont beaucoup aimé la souris d'agneau, hyper fondante. N'oubliez pas de réserver parce que c'est plein tous les soirs.

Seafood delizioso, abbiamo preso due piatti tipici di pesce e abbiamo scoperto dei sapori locali interessanti, accostamenti con salmone affumicato e salse agrodolci, il solito pane con burro salato e un insalata condita con della roba piccante. Ad accompagnare il tutto dei deliziosi biscotti tipo digestive ma salati.

We had an excellent supper here before getting the ferry to Shetland.The service was friendly and efficient and we particularly liked the St Magnus local beer.

We booked here for our final night on Orkney having checked out the menu of here and a few other places. My monkfish (special) was tasty but a tiny portion, whereas my husband’s “Old Man of Hoy” burger was huge. Puddings were the stars of the night. Pleasant and efficient service ensured a good meal!

This was a much anticipated visit. The bar was busy and we experienced a pleasant welcome. We ordered a bottle of Chilean Sauvignon Blanc but got a French vin de Pays. Not the same quality. My wife asked me not to say anything not wanting our meal to get of to a bad start by complaining. The vegetarian fajita was very disappointing. The tortillas were cold and not been warmed, the vegetables consisted peppers and onions and were in a sauce that was very runny. The only other things on the plate was cold salsa and sour cream and a tiny amount of cheese. No Guacamole, refried beans or Jalapeno peppers. The garlic bread served with the pasta was deep fried was not pleasant to eat. The seafood platter was very disappointed too. Not a lot of variety of fish offered at all. The overall feeling was disappointing considering the rating the on tripadvisor. Our bill came to £160 for 3 and one of our party had two starters. This represented a real lack of value for money in my view. The preparation and presentation of the food had the hallmarks of a team who do not have the passion and love of cooking and suggested perhaps a shortage of staff too. I have been teaching cookery for over 20 years and so whilst I can sympathise business be short staffed, I the customer experience fell short of expectations by a long way.

I am absolutely gutted that the food was in my mind well below par…always a popular place to eat I made sure I booked well in advance so I could get a table as they turned several solo travellers away last time & tonight. Last year I had the most amazing seafood chowder but this didn’t make it into the new menu..so tonight I ordered Sweet Potato, Coconut, Lime & Chilli Soup which sounded lovely …in reality it was absolutely awful all I could taste was salt it was as if someone had just tipped a whole salt cellar into this soup I had several mouthfuls then returned it as inedible …and made do with a portion of loaded Mac & cheese chips …the staff were friendly & apologetic …the atomesphere very welcoming …just something went horribly wrong tonight with the soup. However I know the food is usually top notch so I would encourage people to try this place out but book in advance. I am deeply disappointed that this year was so poor compared to last year …but I accept everyone is allowed an off day …easy on the salt chef & pop some chilli in perhaps ..hopefully altho this is a poor rating people will read my previous review dated 31 Jul 22 & know this clearly was just a bad day & will give Helgi’s a go.

Splendid fish and chips with homemade tartare sauce almost as good as mine. Pleasant helpful staff; decent wine; nice upstairs dining room.

Good food and alternatives for people with food intolerances were offered. A bit pricey, though, as portion size was small. Very clean and welcoming establishment.

We were excited about coming here having read various reviews but were disappointed with the food which just tasted pre- frozen. The sea food platter which sounded exciting was nothing more than a bit of smoked salmon, a small amount of fresh crab and some pre frozen tasteless prawns.
