Found this charming place today. Tucked away off the road its charm is worth finding. We were greeted as we entered the door by a friendly smile. The cafe is small but despite being busy we found a table. Our order was taken promptly by a very friendly young lady. Unfortunately their coffee machine had broken down but we were offered alternatives. We opted for earl grey tea. We ordered the soup of the day, tomato and Mascarpone cheese with bread. The teas arrived promptly following very shortly by the soups. The soup was absolutely amazing. Pipping hot, lots of it and the taste was superb. Altogether this was a great find and we felt refreshed, fed and appreciated as a customer. Thanks guys for adding to our holiday.

This cafe was recommended to us for its scones, jam and cream and they definitely delivered. From the minute we walked in we were greeted with a smile and ‘nothing is too difficult’ attitude. We had fruit scones which were delicious. The jam and clotted cream were also lovely. The cafe is very dog friendly, warm, smells wonderful and deserves the five stars.

After having fond memories visiting this cafe many years ago under previous management, we were looking forward visiting again. Cafe was fairly quiet and managed to get tables for all of us- 4 adults and 2 young children. Owner seemed friendly and accommodating enough on arrival. Yes the cafe is very small as stated in other posts but this issue is now excebated but cluttered decor e.g. free standing screen in corner of room randomly. However the main issue was when ordering. My 3 year had asked me if he could have a toasted teacake, so I asked the owner on off chance... Big mistake!!! I was publicly humiliated! She responded at top of her voice "are you having a laugh?!!! This is Scotland! Teacakes are in 'Englandshire'! You will be having one of freshly baked scones which we have up here if you know whats good for you!" This instigated tittering from other customers in cafe! Totally embarrassing. Couple of ironies here... was actually hoping to order a scone anyway it was simply my 3 year old who wanted the teacake as obviously not at age to understand regional differences in cuisine yet and the other is the fact that my family is half orcadian too! If I wasn't so stunned by her outburst I would have asked where other traditional ordcadian baking was such as drop scone, oven scone and bannocks. Surely 'Aero cakes'are hardly Scottish either. Scones were the only tradional bakes on offer and I have to say they were quite dry and over cooked. Had much much better else where. I understand her remarks were probably made in 'jest' but came across as rude and arrogant. Also when taking order she asked the children what they wanted to drink- they are 3 and 1. Running through the list of drinks lightning fast pace and asking him wanted he wanted several times just confused him and put him on the spot. Again I know she was probably trying to be friendly but it was impractical and a bit too 'overbearing'. The childrens hot chocolate came out incredibly hot for a drink knowing a it was for a toddler. On plus there some toys to entertain the children which was a nice touch. But unfortunately we didn't return again based on experience. Never written a review on here before but the experience stayed with... for the wrong reasons!

We were in search of Cullen skink soup and we found it in this cosy little cafe! What a treat it was having lunch at this cafe which served up one of Scotland’s National soup dishes. It was delicious. There were also on offer a variety of homemade cakes and slices and extremely good coffee. The two staff (mother and daughter) were very welcoming and hard working. In the summer season it is recommended that you book lunch.

We stopped for lunch as we had about 6 hours in Kirkwall for a cruise stop. Lorraine made our day! The service was great, she was so friendly, and the food was delicious! It was one of those lunches that make you remember the day fondly! I had Coronation chicken which was yummy, and my wife had the pea soup which she said was fantastic. We shared a scone, which she warmed up for us, and I only wish I had more room to eat more dessert! We felt like we had made a friend in Kirkwall! When we visited, she was only open 12-2 so be ready!

Because the premises are small and social distancing not possible, Cafe Lolz is only doing takeaways at the moment. So, if you want soup, sandwiches, scones, homebakes and excellent coffee, this is the place. Soup, sandwiches must be ordered in advance - coffee, a scone, and homebakes can be had without ordering. However a pre - order from the website means your order is waiting when you come to pick up.Had a picnic with a friend in her garden this week and sampled the cullen skink, thai sweet potato soup, egg sandwich, coronation chicken sandwich and a to die for salted caramel brownie. Have also sampled the salad box - full of yummy things Otolenghi style.Sandwiches are packed in a cardboard carton so easy to put in a backpack if going for a long walk.

Lovely tearoom with lots of options (including those for vegetarians): baked potatoes, salads, soups, sandwiches, falafel, burgers, cream teas, cakes and traybakes. The crab roll must be popular as it was sold out when we visited. On popularity - best to ring ahead and book a table if you can (no dogs allowed inside, outside there is a small uncovered seating area where they are welcome). I hope to visit again. I have eaten a lot of rocky road in my time, it is my favourite thing to get if it is on the menu so I consider myself quite the connoisseur. The rocky road at this tearoom is the best I’ve ever had. Staff also very friendly, and there is a wonderful view out to Brough of Birsay.

Just back from staying 3 nights in the wonderful very dog friendly Lynnfield Hotel in Kirkwall. We have stayed in several other hotels in Kirkwall but none of them came up to the standard of the Lynnfield Hotel. Malcolm and his staff couldn’t have made us feel more welcome than they did. Our room, the Melsetter Suite was just wonderful. A fantastic mira shower and a space age jacuzzi bath etc etc! The food was simply delicious. We had intended eating elsewhere on one of the nights but after dinner in the Lynnfield Hotel the first night we continued to eat in house for the duration of our stay. For dog owners, look no further. All the staff are very dog friendly. Rusty our Welsh terrier can’t wait to go back! Very highly recommended.

Simon is the person who served us each day this week. Very dry sense of humour & not a man to be rushed! The coffee and teas are good. Small selection of eats - a fab coconut and chocolate cake and hot pies. Only 4-5 small tables available ( and takeaway). Only seems to be open around 9am or 9.30am, not 8am as advertised. Good old fashioned easy listening music.
