Expensive cakes. No more pastries. Rude staff and no atmosphere. Nobody speaking French. Better go to Pauls around the corner.

I went with a friend to the French Institute a few weeks ago and had a drink before our movie started. We ordered two cocktails and a piece of chocolate cake, for what I was charged £9.50. When I expressed my surprise at the prohibitive price, the waitress told me that she had checked the price with her more senior colleague and this was correct. On returning to the table, my friend said that the price for the chocolate cake was on display and it was £4.00 not £9.50. I took the price and showed it to the waitress, who was very apologetic and immediately offered to refund me the difference in cash. The more senior colleague, an older gentlemen, who brought us the drinks at the table, also offered his apologies and explained that the young waitress “had a strong accent and did not have a clue what she was doing as this is her second day on the job”. Whether this was true, is irrelevant and the actual excuse for over-charging us was sexist and appalling towards his younger colleague. Although the quality of the food is good, not above what I would normally expect from a French place, the attitude towards a female young colleague was terrible. I would avoid returning to this place.

We are regular patrons of one of Colbert’s sister restaurants, Bellanger, so had high expectations of Colbert but left very disappointed. The service is great (although they didn’t tell us about the specials until after we’d already had our starter and I most certainly would have ordered from that menu instead) and they were very accommodating of our small dog and young baby. The food, however, was extremely disappointing, and also heavily overpriced. The steak was underwhelming and the Diane sauce (which you pay extra for) bland and watered down. The sausage and lentil dish small, not very tasty and with poor quality ingredients. The only saving grace was the Jerusalem Artichoke soup which was delicious. For 2 courses for 2 adults and a couple of drinks each the bill wasn’t far off £200 which was just madness for the poor quality food on offer. We won’t be returning.

Visited this place several times during our stay in London. Staff is very friendly, and tea is spot on. Enjoyed morning tea and scones, afternoon tea, and even after dinner tea here.
