Visited the Cafe at Pentland Plants whilst my wife was looking around the plants. Ordered a Vanilla Milkshake. It arrived quickly, staff were pleasant. The milkshake was the consistency and temperature of milk from the fridge, it tasted like milk with vanilla syrup in it. I don’t believe there was any ice cream involved. A refund was offered immediately without any attempt to provide a real milkshake. I appreciate the immediate offer of the refund but this leads me to believe that the inferior milkshake offered is a deliberate cost saving exercise to rip off the majority of milk shake drinkers: children - shame on you Pentland Plants!

We were taken here by friends (I had never heard about it) The staff seat you and there is table service. The food options were extensive and everyone enjoyed their mains . Good portions of Mac and cheese, lasagne and large baked potato. The scones looked fantastic but I had no room left! The 4 of us did manage to share a tray bake and a carrot cake which were delish. Self service for water and the coffee was good. The garden centre and shop attached are worth a visit as well. It was busy but we hardly had to wait anytime to get a seat.

I visit this cafe regularly, the food is nice as are the staff....normally. unfortunately one of them not so today. I asked for a table for one & immediately was made to feel a nuisance. Whilst being seated I was asked if I wanted table service or order online. I asked for table service and was promptly told we'll get to you when we can, we are very busy. I did not like her manner, I found it offensive. I was just about to place my order online when one of the younger (very pleasant) girls came & took it. Her attitude spoiled my visit. And just an observation. After the way I was treated I observed 2 tables of women nursing glasses of water, blocking tables for others at the busy lunchtime period and I was treated like that!

Food was ok but really small portions for the price you pay. We paid £6 for a kids box but they skimped on bread so my daughter only got half a cheese sandwich so she basically had crisps and chocolate for her lunch. Needless penny pinching when the full cheese sandwich would only cost 10p more to include. Also I paid £11 for a sliver of quiche. Was more hungry after than before I ate!

Terrible customer service. I went with my friend and her one year one child. We where sat quickly. We where told we had to order online as it would be quicker. Not all the options where on the on the online menu so we went up to the counter. They told us someone would come over. 20 minutes later a woman came over. She took my friends order I said I would order online just to save time. The option for a small chips was not on the online menu so I went back up to the counter, the woman behind the counter rolled her eyes at me and sighed and said someone would come over, they eventually did 30 minutes later and by this time my friends child was gettting hungry so ordered a large for quickness. The child’s meal was a disgrace. £5 for not a whole sandwitch, half a sandwich with half a slice of ham. My friends macaroni was that greasy she had to dab it a few times with a napkin. Very dissappinted and will not be back.

Anticipating a busy morning and having fond memories of a lovely tea time treat at the café, I thought I would fortify myself while gathering my thoughts this morning. I was so disappointed with the whole experience. Being shown to my table I was asked if I would like to order via the app! Fortunately they do offer the alternative of someone coming and taking my order. This they did (on a handheld tablet or keypad) and immediately asked for payment - card or cash. It was so impersonal and totally lackng in atmosphere - even McDonalds can do better! The bacon roll arrived (and it was very tasty) but no cutlery or napkin - it seems you have to leave your seat and go and help yourself to these essentials. No sign of the capuccino though and when I'd just about finished the roll and failed to attract a member of staff, I went up to the front and asked about it. It did appear then but, no surprise, without a teaspoon. This cafe has got about as much atmosphere as my work canteen had way back in the 70s and not my idea of a relaxing venue for a refreshment. What a shame.

Fabulous afternoon tea. When booking I asked for a table outside if weather was nice & they said they’d keep an eye on the weather for. We arrived to find a lovely table had been reserved outside for us. Fresh made sandwiches & homemade cakes & scones. Bonus is you can choose your sandwich from the menu rather than be given a set selection that you don’t like. Huge scones & were able to swap from fruit to plain. Other cakes were generous too. All were delicious. Boxes were given to take home the leftovers. A couple of last minute changes were accommodated. Excellent & friendly service. Well worth the money.

I found the food to be adequate, nothing out of ordinary. What did bother me, however, was the lack of hygiene with the assistants at the tills who constantly either wiped their nose with the backs of their hand or played with their hair while carrying out their duties. Cakes etc were put in the display cases, these being touched without using gloves.

Ordered two scones with jam and clotted cream to eat in. One jam portion was very stingy. I had to scrape it on. Asked for Cullen Skink soup to take away. The lady doubted that she had enough for three portions but went to check. She came back and said yes, she had enough. The worst Cullen Skink I've ever eaten. Thin fish broth would better describe it. (Watered down maybe?) I had 2 small lumps of potatoes in mine. So dissapointed. £7 each portion and £34 in total for our 2 scones and 3 thin soups. Not at all good value for money.

We have visited Pentland Plants and the cafe for years , probably 15-20 years. It has gone down hill and I won’t be returning. Too many dogs , and dog owners letting dogs say ‘hello’ to each other rather than let elderly customers past . While we were in today there was a dog with an Assistane harness in but I do not believe it was an Assistance dog as it was so badly behaved. This is not fair on proper assistance dogs. Why do dogs need to be in a cafe ? I am a dog owner but would never dream of taking my dog to a cafe . Why not take the dog a nice walk then leave it at home or in the car ? Staff very unhelpful regarding this matter. Service also appalling .

Had a Mother’s Day breakfast here with family members. I had the vegetarian breakfast which cost £8.50! It was dire, so expensive for what it was too!! Firstly the breakfast was served on a strange size of plate! When I have eaten here in the past your breakfast was served on a dinner plate or larger. My breakfast on this occasion was served on a plate size larger than a side plate but smaller than a dinner plate! It was like a child’s plate. Three quarters of the plate was filled with a mass of cheap baked beans. It is so much nicer to get baked beans served on a wee side dish on the plate! Most places do this, but not here! The veg haggis was a slip of soft brown smear. I have never seen veg haggis like this before! Unsure of the brand, but it was not good!! No veg sausage. A hard tomato halved and a small portion of mushrooms. It came with a slice of toast which was brick hard and burnt. It should never have left the kitchen! The breakfast dish was hardly touched. It did not taste good. Numerous staff passed glancing at this discarded mess on our table, without a comment as they went about their business. Terrible value and definitely not worth the money. It had been a while since we had been there. It’s a shame as their breakfast used to be good. We won’t be back - don’t waste your money, go to Dobbies!

Used to be great but service in cafe has really gone downhill. 20 Feb waited 25mins for order to be taken, hot breakfast rolls arrived 5mins later and coffee 15 mins after that. You can no longer order or pay at till, they ask for card payment when they take order on tablet. Customers encouraged to order online themselves which many declined as it takes forever and a day (in hindsight maybe marginally quicker than table service). Appreciate it was busy but many people arriving after us had their order taken before us. Also people want their drinks served with their food. Food is nice but wouldnt be in a rush to return due to poor service. Suggest employ more staff or limit number of customers. Serve drinks with food, shouldn't need to ask for drinks and food to be served together!

I was at the cafe with my friend on Thursday. We had a lovely, relaxing visit having a few coffees and a good catchup. When it came to pay, we were told to sit back at our table as the tills/card payments weren't working and they were trying to sort it! This was at 2pm. We waited a while, then went back up to the counter to see what was happening ...we were told that they were trying to fix it! I then asked if we could pay the bill, as I had the correct amount of cash...I was told No.....the tills weren't working....I again tried to pay with the correct amount of cash....again I was told No. I was then asked to step away from the counter as she felt intimidated!!!! By this time there was about 12 people all trying to pay standing in front of the counter......the counter staff were still taking orders from new customers and we were clearly in the way and then told to step back and queue in front of the counter....other customers were actually walking out without paying!!!! After still waiting to pay 25 minutes had actually lapsed.....the tills were then working and I was asked if I wanted to pay with cash or card???? As I had thrown the correct money back into my purse, I paid by card....waiting on at least another 3 minutes to get a Receipt???When leaving there was a large queue of other customers trying to pay for items, plants at the exit. I then asked here to see the Manager. When she arrived she apologised for the delay..I told her about the episode and the length of time and especially about "having the correct money" .. she then said that "I should have been able to pay"!!! And again apologised and said she would speak to the restaurant staff to tell them this.I'm sorry, but this whole episode was a complete farce! Pentland Plants are a very popular venue but they clearly should have contingencies in place to deal with this problem and their staff should be adequately trained accordingly.Waiting 25 minutes to pay was just a joke....Our relaxing catch up ended up being so stressful....I'm sorry but I won't be returning anytime soon...

Very friendly and helpful when emailing to book (afternoon tea must be prebooked). Staff were really friendly and welcoming on arrival and orders were taken efficiently. It would be nice if there was a menu specifically for afternoon tea explaining what they want you to choose instead of giving us the full cafe menu to look at but not a big issue. There was a little wait while sandwiches were prepped and everything was plated but the presentation looked great. Two minor criticisms of the sandwiches only: 1) I had ordered mine on brown bread but both came on white, not a big deal but the receipt definitely said brown so just attention to detail. 2) this could be a big deal to some: we ordered one meat sandwich option and the other veggie. Both were served on the same plate as though to slice they had placed both together and cut through them before arranging them on the plate. I say this especially as I found some crumbs of meat on the edge of my sandwich, I'm not strictly veggie but I do think some may have an issue with this and its maybe something the prep team should consider. The tea overall was delicious and the cake selection was fantastic (the lemon cheesecake was beautifully lemony and carrot cake was amazing, that icing - wow!) We both thoroughly enjoyed the experience and agreed it was well worth the £15pp price tag. Would definitely return

Friendly notices from the owners asking owners to keep dogs under control and quiet were clearly working. (Similar notices directed at parents with respect to their offspring might have been useful, but then they would be anywhere. :) ) We went there having seen the garden centre and its owner featured on the Instant Gardener on BBC2 this morning, and realised it was only an hour from home. We were very pleased to find this café on a trip down from a stay in Scotland, after a search on the internet to find a dog friendly garden centre (anticipating that we would have to sit outside). Their website said that dogs were allowed in the café so we made our way there. We were delighted to find that they have set aside a decent sized area for dog owners inside (our local garden centre provides one table indoors!) and in particular as it poured with rain while we were there. Not only that they even have a doggie menu. Our canine didn't partake this time. The café was very clean, the service was quick and the food was great. Also the toilets were very good. They have a nice gift selection in the garden centre too. This would be a regular visit if only it wasn't 500 miles from home! We would definitely call in again when we were back in the area. At one point I was in a queue of nine people and no one was serving? The two ladies who should have been taking orders were making coffee in fact three coffees each which seemed odd as they then had to take payments and give change etc. Apart from this we were happy we dropped by and will surely be back.

Today myself and my mum used a voucher for two for afternoon tea, I have to say I would not be paying £18.95 for it!!! Two slices of bread between the two of us, didn’t help that we asked for a mix of tuna and ham sandwiches and we got ham and egg!! The scone was okay, but don’t like fruit scones really and was not given a choice of what scones we would like. The cakes weren’t very tasty, the macaroons were okay and we only got one brownie between us.......

Definitely very average. Been a few times as it is a convenient place to meet but have been disappointed. Scones a bit dry on occasion. Quiche soft pastry and soggy bottom. Fish and chips bit over done and small portion. Winners seem to be the soups. Heard the cheese scone is nice too.

Been here a few times and it is a relatively pleasant experience. It is not a la carte, but is probably what one might expect from a garden centre. Plain fare and self service.

Not quite sure what to make of Pentland Plants as a destination. The cafe is in a perspex roofed area so is very bright and warm. However why they have decorated the surroundings and even the table centrepiece with plastic plants ( in a garden centre) is beyond me! Opting for the fruit scones, these were rather dry and lacked flavour and observing the fresh fruit options on the servery, was a bit shocked at the price (75p for a banana, or apple).

No volveremos. Es una pena, porque el centro del jardín es un precio razonable para comprar plantas

Just popped in for lunch with daughter - had been recommended - my soup was inedible - celery and leek tasted like it was made with sea water it was so salty - it was served with a tasteless pesto and parmiesan scone which I presume was heated in microwave - stodgy and disappointing. My daughter had sweet potato soup also disappointed in it...

Very mixed. Daughters had macaroni and soup dishes which were fine whilst I opted for the all day breakfast. My breakfast was inedible. Sausage was cold in centre, potato scone was sodden in grease and mushrooms had been cooked hours ago.

Stopped by for Sunday lunch with in-laws, kids etc and the menu provided for everyone. Sandwiches were tasty and packed full. Staff were friendly and attentive. Down side and really only for me is that part of the cafe is a dog friendly which I don't have an issue with but it's also next to kids play area. Kids area is fantastic, kitchen, dressing up, tent, baby toys etc. Enough to keep them entertained while I finish my lunch. Visited several times since and haven't been disappointed but we did stop by for afternoon tea once and it was a bit of a let down. Not enough sandwiches and too many cakes. Filter coffee was bitter. Will still return just not for afternoon tea!!

A hidden gem in a lovely setting near Edinburgh. Friendly service, the best bacon rolls ever, delicious scones, cakes and traybakes, along with excellent coffee or tea and a variety of soft drinks. A bonus is the craft work on sale made by local artisans. Can't recommend it enough! Eliz
