Second time here on a Saturday although no other tables. While having the starters, a local man who phoned an order in walked in straight in to the kitchen in nasty clothes, the manger and chef didn’t care too much that some bloke walked straight into a professional kitchen! EHO need to visit this restaurant and soon. Paid for the starter and left. Owner couldn’t care less. Avoid. From a restaurant manager this would be absolutely unacceptable.

Open for DINNER ONLY (5pm-10pm) and reservation is encouraged. The food tasted very fresh and homemade. We tried two dishes neither of us had tried before and they were both delicious. (Cauliflower/green beans and the Ceylon) Not great that you need to pay for the chutney but the portions were worth the extra 70 pence. Overall the prices are very reasonable.

Disapointing Haven't been here for years, since last disappointing meal, regret it, still disappointing, very greasy (literally poured the grease off the top of the curry,) cheap vegetables (possibly frozen pack veg?) Peas, sweetcorn, beans and carrot all very mushy and over cooked. Basic spice profile but quite bland, peshwari nann was dry tasteless had no sultana/raisins. Boo rubbish. Better than nothing.

It's a good old fashioned Indian restaurant. The food is good quality and freshly cooked. The service can be great but also sometimes a little bit dismissive. I was shocked going twice in a short space of time recently - the prices had almost doubled overnight (admittedly they were low before). Also the portion sizes for side dishes had radically diminished in the restaurant from previous visits. On balance I would recommend it - but for me it's too expensive now.

Both occasions were absolutely beautiful dishes. The take away I had coriander lamb and I could literally cut it with a plastic fork, it was cooked beautifully and tasted amazing!!! The naan bread is cooked traditional in a clay oven and is amazing overall I would highly recommend this place for a true taste of Indian cuisine.

Whilst staying in Totnes we decided to go for an Indian and came across Cafe Mumbai whilst out walking during the day. Being right at the top of the high street we would of missed it! We phoned and booked a table for 7:30pm and on arrival, only one other table was occupied. The restaurant had its air con on which was great because it was hot outside. We were instantly welcomed and put at ease and given menu's. So much choice and really easy to read which was great. I choose the mint chicken and my husband went for one of the specials. He asked one of the waiters for his recommendations and advise and he seemed very knowledgeable. We both really enjoyed our choices, and it was great the waiter came back over to enquire if my husband was enjoying his dish that he had recommended! It was really busy with people coming in for take outs, so a very popular Indian in the town. We weren't rushed and really got to enjoy the food. Whilst paying the bill the lady owner came out to chat and describe in a bit more detail about how she cooked the special dish and all the spices she used. It was really interesting. I would highly recommend this restaurant and would definitely return when back staying in Totnes.

I visit the South Devon region regularly and have eaten at other Indian restaurants in Totnes. On a recent visit, I decided to try Cafe Mumbai. It was a very good decision. Do not be put off by the restaurants somewhat dated interior, The food is excellent, learning much more to authentic Indian than Bangladeshi interpretation. All the dishes were full of fresh vibrant flovours and well balanced. Service was very good. Another sign of a good restaurant is hearing the reactions from other diners. Many were regulars, as were those popping in for take-aways. I will be back soon to try more dishes in their extensive repertoire.

Having eaten here regularly since moving to the area last December, we were both very disappointed with our meals (chicken zalfrezi and chicken malay). The chicken was not fresh, it was tough and tasted stale. The sauces were bland, whereas their sauces used to be wonderful with great use of spices. We asked if the chef has changed and were told 'no', asked if there was a problem. We told them what we thought. No reparations offered. We won't visit again I'm afraid.

Cafe Mumbai is a lovely restaurant tucked in Totnes. It was open on a Sunday contrary to many places. It is a popular place. The food is delicious ( I recommend Mango Lassi, Chana Laow, Chapati, Garlic Naan and Paneer dishes.) Veg pakoras weren't great. I took away one star because the place is small and gets crowded quickly ( I recommend you book.). Also, the service could improve a little bit : one of our waiters kept asking us "Is that all you ordered?" when serving our food. It makes it a little bit stressful to have to mull over what we ordered even though another waitress wrote everything down. Another waiter also took forever to bring the bill so we had to go up an ask another waitress. Overall a great cafe that can improve on small details. Keep up the good work!

Strangely empty, Cafe Mumbai was one of the last places that I tried in Totnes after some rather feeble curries locally. I would really recommend the specials board and talking to the people who run the restaurant. Amazing fish dishes. I can't begin to tell you how much we enjoyed our meal here. Even my six year old said it was the best thing he had ever tasted. My partner had a korma and I had a vindaloo. We were a bit stuck on what to feed the baby and so the lovely lady serving us recommended a mild lentil side dish, which he gobbled up when it arrived. The portions were just the right size and the flavours were to die for. I was also exceptionally impressed with the house white wine, which was delicious! A range of desserts and coffees were on offer including chocolate fudge cake, which my six year old enjoyed. Staff are absolutely lovely and they even have a special's board, which you certainly don't see often in a curry house. I can't recommend this little gem enough if you like your curry!

As a fond Indian cuisine fan from Yorkshire, I’ve been exposed to many a curry. Without a shadow of a doubt this is the WORST and most over priced curry I’ve partaken of in my life. Slop. Slop. Slop. Slop. Slop. I went for a Chicken Dansak, which may as well have been called chicken in water. Honestly god awful. Bland, no veg, no onion, no garlic, nothing else but slop and meat. To accompany my slop I had pilau rice (which I can confirm was cooked), a chapatti and onion bhajis. Eating the Bhaji had a similar feel to the viral 2014 cinnamon challenge, arguably the bhaji was drier however. Again, no flavour just a dry ball. The £2.50 chapatti, that’s correct, £2.50… was clearly one from a supermarket packet. I’ve not got particularly big hands yet the chapatti sat comfortably in my opened hand. My friend’s plain naan suffered the same growth issues at birth and was incredibly disappointing. Overall, pricey, tasteless and would never recommend anyone to ever try this place. Whether we’re completely spoilt by northern curry houses I don’t know but this was a tragedy.

Disappointing meal, although my local friends considered it a good restaurant. I only had one dish, vegetable dansak. It was sweet and under spiced. The garlic Nan was very tasty. I assume it is run by Bangladeshis, as are most so called “Indian” restaurants in the UK. I have nothing against Bangladesh or it’s people, in fact I have enjoyed several trips there, but don’t feel their food is renowned, like real Indian food is, from say Kerala or Tamil Nadhu. Cafe Mumbai is a bit overpriced for what you get, both food and drinks. The staff were nice, the service fast enough, the atmosphere is pleasant. I would not return.

The restaurant was nicely presented, staff were friendly, service was quick, poppadums were nicely crisp and warm and our meals from their Specials Board, which I don't find very often in Indian restaurants, were top quality. We were very disappointed with a number of elements of our indian restaurant experience; firstly the food - the Chicken Tikka Masala and the Chicken Korma not only looked exactly the same but they tasted the same as did pretty much the Butter Chicken and the Chicken Pasada. - all these curries had too much sugar in them. - the Vegetable Jalafrezi was really inedible and seemed like poorly made watery veg stew with some curry powder in it. - the chutneys served with the poppadoms were not of a high calibre. The ‘mango chutney’ was a tasteless sweet goo and the raita we ordered as a side dish was just plain yogurt with a little watery cucumber dropped on it. Secondly the service; - the school kids that we left to walk around and do the service I believe had never actually been to a restaurant before and therefore had little idea of how to make the customers feel taken care of. I think some training would be very helpful for everyone’s experience. For example, when additional cutlery was required you would think that placing it in the appropriate positions on the table could be a basic expectation rather that it just being dumbed on the table in a pile. In essence we shall not be returning to this restaurant and would not suggest our friend to do so either as I can only hope a more authentic Indian restaurant exists with owners that are genuinely committed to an enjoyable experience and good food.

It is with great sadness that I have to write this review, but unfortunately the food from Cafe Mumbai gave my partner and I food poisoning. We both intermittently fast and only eat one meal per day, so we are very confident that the food poisoning came from Cafe Mumbai's food. I emailed the manager who initially responded but has subsequently ignored my emails and is unwilling to engage or take responsibility. They even had the cheek to still charge us for a meal we had not eaten or enjoyed, and we feel cheated.

I have eaten in loads of indian eateries. Travelled Sri Lanka and India. This is VERY expensive and bland food, dressed up to look contemperary. Owner JUST looks unhappy. Staff perky and attended us well though. In desperate need of a re-fit.

Love this place the food is superb. Had the vegetarian jalfezi and it was delicious. Prices are reasonable and usually there is room available. Service is also decent enough. The chef Kolbe is a great guy and interacts with the guests which is a nice touch.

Our children (adults) popped down from Kent on a surprise visit at the weekend and insisted we went to the Cafe Mumbai as we had nothing prepared.

Food was good traditional Indian cuisine, with plenty of variation. Service was quick. Restaurant needs a bit of tidying up, but it doesn't detract from the food

This curry house is in the heart of Totnes, and looks inviting from outside. I ordered the special...it wasn't very special at all. I would not eat here again. Staff are friendly and the service is rather quick, which are plus points. However, the wine was not to our taste and there is little ambience in the restaurant as it could do with a makeover.

I was looking forward to my Indian meal very much. The restaurant was typically decorated with plastic flowers and nasty pictures on the wall. We shared a sheek kebab to start, it wasn't the fine minced lamb we were used to. We ordered for mains chicken masala, 2 rice, garlic nan and lamb tikka. The food arrived and after eating, the conclusion is that it is the worse Indian food we have ever eaten. BLAND BLAND BLAND, No taste at all, the sauce was lumpy, a dule shade of orange. The lamb was grey, not very tender, no sizzling onions, just 6 bits of lamb and very small garnish. I couldn't taste any garlic in the nan bread at all. And as other reviewers have said already, NOT cheap!

Had a takeaway for 10 people while on holiday nearby. The service was friendly over the phone and the order was taken efficiently and provided accurately. And then the food was lovely. Personally the Chana Dal was the best dal I've had. I would recommend the food and service here.

Ordered a chapati to accompany my meal, and they served me a warmed tortilla wrap instead, definitely not the same thing. Can't fault the staff though.

This place has all the usual standard Indian dishes, but the presentation and quality is beyond what you normally get. Much less oily than many places, and really good tastes. Will definitely return the next time we're in Dartmouth.

I visited with friends, it’s a bit tucked away, a bit of a Dartmouth locals secret apparently. One of my party recommended it and it was a sound choice. They serve really nice food, service is friendly and polite, and it is reasonably priced. The restaurant does not sell alcohol, but you are welcome to BYO and they are happy to supply glasses, which saves money.
