We ordered chicken biriyani it was really good. Highly recommended.

Slightly odd food. Very pleasant service but we ate alone and the tablecloths were dirty.

Most unhygienic restaurant in town. The food wasn’t great either. The sides they served along with dosa was prepared few days back is what was told to us when we asked about smell n taste of the dish. Never goin back again

Best and only AUTHENTIC Indian food in town !

I was hoping to give this place 5 stars, but I will provide a detailed review of my experience. 1. Opening time: It is advertised the opening is 17:00 on Saturdays. I entered at 17:13 on Saturday 2nd Jul 22. I was welcomed in, only to be told the kitchen was not open. I do appreciate being told, it was a kind gesture indeed, but it shows poor planning. When you'll advertise the opening time as 17:00, the restaurant must be fully open. Or if there is an inconvenience, change the opening time or put a sign board stating the restaurant will open late due to the circumstance. I returned back at 19:23. 2. The Menu: I ordered the Dosa, but the waitress told me it was not available as it's a breakfast item, then I asked for the Vada and was told the same. A lot of item on the menu were unavailable. Now I been to many South Indian restaurant and the Dosa is usually the star item on the menu and I have never seen it serve as an exclusive breakfast item only. Hence, don't give us that excuse. Also, the question is, if your restaurant operates from 17:00 to 22:00/22:30, during what time do you'll serve breakfast? I don't know. Do you'll serve breakfast at a time which you'll have not advertised? That's okay, but I suggest you'll split the menu. Have a separate menu for breakfast, lunch and dinner. In that way your customer does not have to decide on something, only to be told that item is unavailable. Therefore, I asked the waitress what was available, and I was told the onion bhaji was available. I also asked if the samosa was available and I was told it was available. 3. The Food: The samosa was burnt and seems it was frozen and bought from the supermarket and refried but I was not charged for the samosa because I was provided only 1 instead of 2. The onion bhaji didn't look like onion bhaji at all. Onion bhaji must be firm solid onion fritters. That's what the menu stated, but this was just some crumbs of onion coated in gram flour. That's not onion bhaji. It look like Chivda. However, that's fine if that's your variation. 4. The Service: As per the menu, the Onion Bhaji was meant to be served with tomato chutney. The tomato chutney was missing. I thought the waitress would bring it and she never did. She was busy, and I tried to draw her attention but she did not respond. Later I complained and she deducted something from my payment. 5. Value for money: Too expensive. A glass of lemonade costs £2.95, £1.95 for a glass of sparkling water. 6. Cleanliness and Décor: The tables were dirty, with food stains on the table cloth, dust on the side plates and stains on the cutlery. The toilets were dusty with cobwebs. Décor, very gloomy atmosphere. Didn't feel the place was very inviting. 7. Overall experience: Terrible! Most of the items on the menu were unavailable. Food was lousy and not worth visiting again. If the items I wanted were available, I would have made a purchase of at least £20, but because a lot of items were unavailable, I made a purchase of less than £10. But I will tell you that you have a chance to improve. Normally, when I review a store and I have a bad experience, I tell my readers to avoid visiting. However, in your case, I will not tell my readers to not visit your store. If you improve, and take heed to my recommendation, and if I see improvement, I will edit my review and possibly give you a good review. Thank you

Delicious food. Authentic taste of the Malabar cuisine was unmissable. We ordered a takeaway and every dish was distinct and tasty, enjoyed with the Kerala Parotta and plain rice. If only there was a similar restaurant in London... Do try the Malabar Prawn and the Fish Moilee UPDATE: Rating reduced from 5 to 2 stars (May '22). We went back after about 9 months and we were disappointed. Service slow, food too salty, new management, shortened menu and most items not available. They even mentioned a few times that they had a busy day and many ingredients were over -perhaps and indication that we were not welcome. We won't be going back.

Finally a good true Indian restaurant in Norwich. Have been to most of the Indian restaurants in Norwich, but Malabar is closest to Indian food. We ordered appam,puri,chicken 65,Chicken Biryani,paneer saag and kadai chicken. Everything tasted really good, quantity and price is good as well. I wish they could serve the food little faster and staff could have better knowledge of the menu.

Delicious food delivered very quickly via JustEat. Everything was very flavourful and the many gluten free options made me very happy.

Ordered Mysore bonda, Sambar vada and Dosa through Uber eats, and food at best was average. The bigger problem was Mysore bonda, what I received instead was Aloo bonda and when I called the restaurant to complain about it, the manager was unapologetic about it and offered a lame excuse that this is how they prepare Mysore bonda here. I have no issues that they are serving Aloo bonda, the real issue is the misinformation. Nothing tasted authentic. Had high hopes from this place. Never gonna order again.

My Dad and I have spent the last year visiting different curry houses across Norwich and beyond, as a way of trying out new places. We have visited a lot of places and I can honestly say this is up there with the best. When the food arrived we knew we were in for a treat, as it smelt so good. The lamb pepper masala and cauliflower bhaji were a particular highlight. I always think you can judge a curry house by the simple onion bhaji and these were among the best. Light, non-greasy and packed with flavour. The staff were also very friendly and will definitely be back here again.

We loved the meal we had a couple of years ago so made a beeline to Taste of Malabar on our first trip away from home for almost two years. South Indian cuisine is so good for vegetarians, we went specially for the dhosas which were wonderful and enormous! Our starters fabulous too. Two elderly gentlemen arrived while we were eating. They're obviously very regular and discerning customers from their conversation with our very congenial host!

Best place to get south Indian food in Norwich. I often go there with family for a dosa/ vada. Sambar, though loaded with tamarind flavour which I personally don't like, is an authentic preparation. This place also has good selection of tasty Kerala/ malayali food. I would definitely recommend this place if you are after a vada/dosa and if you like spicy malayali food.

Superb food, friendly staff and really excellent value. Can recommend the Gobi Manchurian - a positive explosion of flavour!

Lovely food , really recommend the dosai.

My partner and I wanted to try a thali and arrived just after opening at 17:15 and the sign says open but the doors were still locked. After the waitress noticed this, they quickly opened the door. The interior was pleasant and we got to choose where we sat however the issues started after that. The waitress gave us paper takeaway menus, when the restaurant hands out the laminated menus with a fuller list of options. The paper menu didn't have the thali despite it being advertised on the menu at the front of the restaurant and images plastered at the front of the restaurant of the thali as well as lots of reviews and pictures of the dish. So we asked the waitress if we could order the thali, they weren't sure because it wasn't on the paper menu so they went to ask the chef. They came back saying that they "don't do it". So we believed them and ordered some dosas from the menu. After our meal, another member of staff who was an older man walks into the restaurant gets ready and seats another couple. The waitress comes over and they ask for a thali, she says no they dont do the thali, the couple manage to stop the waiter that seated them and asked about the thali and he said that they did do the thali and they ordered 2. That really ruined the entire experience knowing that we didn't get the dish we wanted because of someone's incompetence. The food was just average, nothing to write home about and If you want a dish and they say they dont have it, get a second opinion and ask another staff member... Edit: - I forgot to mention the poppadom problem. We ordered a portion of poppadoms and for £1 we expected 3 but, they came out with 1... that was odd, I've never experienced that before.

Dropped into here on the way back to station and having read some previous trip advisor reviews. Whilst the venue could be better, but is clean and simple this is far outweighed but the taste and quality of food which is just far better than your average tandoori restaurant. Prices seem to be on par with the average bit food was just fantastic.

This is under rated and surprisingly quiet. Excellent food, particularly the dosas. Very reasonably priced as well. Service was a little shambolic and slow, but we did visit on their first evening reopening post lockdown.

Ordered in on a Saturday at 4pm for it to arrive at 7pm. Waited in all eve for our order as stated would arrive at 19.05. At the time it should have arrived received a text that it had been cancelled and would not be arriving at all as they were closed . Having waited in all eve for our order we were most disappointed to receive this message that 3 hours after ordering and paying our dinner would not be arriving at all.such a shame and will not order from again.

Great south Indian cuisine.try a masala dosa if you never had one before

Food was freshly made with good flavours, really tasty southern Indian food. We are vegans and there was a great choice, also reasonably priced. Would recommend this as an excellent place to go.

Friday Night, me and her in that restaurant with enough seatings for 40, but only 4 of us. We had the onion bhajis, Poppadoms, Mysore Masala Dosas and Chili Paneer. A rating of 5 stars as :(i). Everything was fresh! The chutneys for the poppadums, the bhajis and the dosas were clearly freshly grinded. I could smell the freshly grinded ginger in there, albeit a tad over-powering sometimes.(ii). Mysore Dosa was a perfect triangle as you should expect. The dosa was crispy, thin and the chili chutney as the coating, was deceptively not spicy, but again spiciness is subjective to people’s taste. We were surprised that the parts covered by the masala potatoes were crispy as well!(iii). The Sambhar was just as it should be, tad spicy, thick, little bit of veg incl. a piece of drumstick with a wift of sourness from the tamarind. Coconut chutney was OK, I would’ve preferred it thicker with more flavours, perhaps with curry leaves tempering... (iv). Best onion bhajis in Norwich, period! Strands of onions each coated with the gram batter to provide great crispy texture and celebrate the onions, rather than a thick batter containing soggy onions as most other places do. My only criticism would be that the service was very premature. No plates were provided for our starters, but we asked and they kindly brought us a couple. The wait in between meals was slightly longer than one would expect, specially with a near empty place. It can sometimes be a good thing though, if you are taking time to prepare your meals with care and attention.Rightly so, I could feel the passion which has gone into the cooking, the care for the ingredients and the freshness of the meals. It was enough to surpass my criticisms for the service and I will maintain my 5 stars! I would highly recommend Taste of Malabar to keep up this standard of cuisine, and perhaps improve/work on the service a bit more.

This was our second visit and it didn’t disappoint. Delicious authentic Indian food with lots of vegan, vegetarian and gluten free options. Staff were super friendly and the service was great. Amazing value for money - we’ll definitely be back again.

WILL NOT RETURN. CONFRONTATIONAL STAFF- VERY RUDE when complained about food quality. No cutlery other than main serving spoon. White wine tasted watered down and room temperature. Dirty table cloth and chair backs. Restaurant was very cold. Waitress had Limited understanding /communication/ knowledge of menu. Staff seemed hostile to each other. Uncomfortable atmosphere. A disappointing saturday night. One other customer on a busy saturday night SHOULD have been an alarm bell.

Much much better than most other Indian restaurants, not fancy looking but the food is excellent, the staff are very nice and service is good

Cobra y Kingfisher disponibles, buena carta de vinos, los chutneys con poppadoms muy buenos y los platos principales excelentes: sambar delicioso, platos de pollo húmedos y sabrosos y las dosas para morirse.

ALTAMENTE recomendado para las opciones vegetarianas del sur de India. El bhaji de cebolla era perfecto, nada de grasa. Mysore Bonda también sin igual. Mi esposa y mi hija disfrutaron de los calamares fritos, nuevamente fritos y no grasosos. Definitivamente volvería a pedir el Mushroom 65.Para mi plato principal, el Masala Dosa fue realmente perfecto. He comido esta opción en Taste of Malalbar muchas veces antes, pero la que se sirvió el domingo fue probablemente la mejor de todas.Mi yerno eligió el Spicy Lamb Fry y felizmente habría lamido el plato si el decoro no le hubiera impedido hacerlo.Visita recomendada, especialmente para vegetarianos. El personal es agradable y amistoso también.

La comida del sur de la India aquí es genial. Los cuatro pedimos una colección de deliciosos entrantes, la mayoría fritos en masa de garbanzos, acompañados de coco fresco o chutneys picantes y todos sin gluten. Los alevines de calamar, las bondas mysore y las vadas ligeras como plumas son las favoritas. Mi plato principal fue un masala dosa, el mejor que he comido en este país, pero también probé el cordero frito picante, definitivamente el mejor de Norwich, y el curry de pescado con mango; también muy bueno. El personal es encantador y puede aconsejarle sobre cualquier elemento desconocido del menú. El restaurante es grande, con mesas bien espaciadas que brindan mucho espacio para mantener la distancia social. La acústica también es buena, lo que es un placer para aquellos de nosotros lo suficientemente mayores como para tener alguna dificultad para oír en restaurantes concurridos. Muy recomendable.

I have visited ToM a few times with my friends. We all enjoyed the freshly cooked food & dishes, the ambience and the service. Will visit the place many more times in future.

Returning to this gem after a long interval with a few friends but as always I was content. Ordered the masala dosa after craving dosa for a while now and I wasn’t disappointed. The staff were very friendly and patient with us despite the fact that it was getting busy. Highly recommend Taste of Malabar for the authentic South Indian experience.

Food was awful and left more then half uneaten. Garlic paratha did not tasta of garlic at all! Food was just generally poor and over priced, we was not impressed

Visited tonight for joint anniversary / 30th birthday and I can not believe how much it cost for what we had. Not sure there was even a proper chef in the kitchen? It was not all bad, the staff were polite.. But unfortunately did not appear to know how to handle criticism. Unfortunately we would not recommend or revisit.

We have sampled the dishes several times; both by takeaway and dining in.

The Saturday buffet is okay, less choices and almost no dessert options except for fruit salad custard

We had been told about this place and decided to give it a try and we are so glad we did as it was a lovely experience with first class service and the food was both tasty and plentiful.I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone who likes indian cuisine as the menu is very good & Anthony the owner will go out of his way to make your visit a pleasurable experience. I have yet to try the buffet night that is held once a month but that will now be on my list for sure.All in all it is a lovely family run restaurant with a nice atmosphere that I highly recommend. Thanks Anthony we will be back soon 10 out of 10.

Amazing place, all about actual flavour and some very different dishes.

Tonight was the third time we have visited Taste of Malabar. As always, the food was incredible. Great, authentic south indian cuisine. The masala dosa comes highly recommended, as do the sambar vada. An all round great experience. Visit this wonderful restaurant.

Great food and excellent service. The most authentic Indian food I've had in a long time.

My wife and I stopped on the way home. Clean restaurant, very friendly. Limited menu but that was good as everything we had to eat was first class. Left very happy customers. Wanted to go to their Curry Night on 30th November but unfortunately will have to miss. Hope there will be a further opportunity.

Very friendly. Nice feeling to restaurant - not too showy but very clean and warm.

The service was ridiculously slow. Even my drink didn't come at the same time as the drinks of the people who I was with and I had to ask for this as they forgot about it. The starter took a ridiculous amount of time to come, the main took well over an hour to come after ordering and they weren't even busy. The quality of the food was average and definitely not worth going for given the shocking service. Wouldn't go again, Namaste is a much better option in Norwich for South Indian food.

Lovely restaurant, friendly staff and tasty food that my kids loved as well. The food was authentic tasting- not the run of the mill food normally found at every restaurant. The fish curry was our favorite! Clean restaurant. Well lit parking lot found right around the corner. Will definitely go again!

Lovely unusual Indian food with a lot of fish dishes

I popped in here for a quick something at the end of a long day and what a find!! Masses of choice for veggies and vegans, great service, friendly staff and the most delicious Indian food I've ever had and I've been alive a while!! Will be heading back for a banquet night to sample more. Very reasonable prices too

We came here after going through the reviews,

When you visit a provincial city for the first time and just weekend, finding the right restaurant to match your taste, diet and cuisine is challenge. Of the many so called Indian on the offer it is quite easy to see they are all but Indian in name, in reality a majority are Bangladeshi run places with their average multi page un-inspiring menu. One often wonders why people will even venture there. Then came up this gem, non descript ordinaray shop fronted but well maintained eatery. The menu is short, list of items are such that they have to be made as fresh (unlike the awful onion bhaji reheated in the other places) such as paneer and aubbergine pakora which we ordered and were delighted.Being run by a Keralan family working hard (Malabar is another name for Kerala) Sticking to vegetarian, Gobi munchurian was tasty and so were Idli and Mysore Masala dosa. Had I chosen to partake fish then there is no match for Kerala fish curry. The staff which mainly comprised owner's daughter studying law and her friend doing MBA. Very polite, smiling and efficient and it was hearterning to see fellow diners some of whom had been to Kerala and nodding in appreciation. Our culinary requirements fully catered for and I would recommend anyone to visit this place

A very pleasant little restaurant. We are keen fish eaters and their king fish dishes are a must try. We had Alleppy Fish Curry and Fish Masala, plus starters and sides. It was also our first taste of Dosa, which was excellent.

Best Indian in norwich lots of veggie vegan options aswell very friendly staff

This place is a gem. Easily the best Indian food in the region. South Indian food is so different - and this family run restaurant has a wonderful range of dishes. We especially like their fish dishes, the dosa and their house specials. Everything is light and fresh and the charming staff are well informed and helpful.

Visited yesterday with friends. The service was good with lots of information about the menu. Quite long gaps between courses but this was no bad thing. We had plenty of time to chat and enjoy the food. The staff came immediately however if we called them. I encouraged my friends to try different things and they are glad they did. The food was really tasty and just the right amount. We left feeling satisfied not stuffed which is perfect. The girl who served us was very pleasant. 2 of us were caught in traffic as the result of an accident so we were all late arriving. During the evening a member of staff came over to check if any of us had been hurt in the accident? I explained it wasn't us we just got delayed by it. I thought this was a really nice touch. Can't wait to go bad and sample some more of their delicious food.

Called in last night (Saturday)on the off chance of getting a table, really lucky as the restaurant was packed. So...a table for two, a great meal served by happy and attentive staff. Super night many many thanks. See you all soon. Micheal

Just returning from a lovely meal at Cafe Malabar ... we booked & were glad we did - after arriving at 6.30 to an almost empty restaurant, by 7pm it was completely full! And no wonder: the food here is freshly cooked & full of taste. Lots of vegan & veggie options, with some wonderful Keralan specialities alongside the traditional Indian staples. Good portion sizes, very reasonably priced & great service.

Great food, friendly staff. Try the paratha bread

We visited in a Friday evening after finding out that it specialised in Keralan food which is one of our favourites. The ambience is pleasant and the owners + daughter were very friendly and welcoming. We started with Masala dosa which was excellent..the best we have ever tasted, really light and crispy. The other starter we had was an onion Bhajee which was also terrific. For mains we had a fish curry and a chicken vindaloo which were both extremely fresh and tasty. The kulfi desserts are also very good. Very hard to fault any element of the food or service. They do serve more traditional curry dishes which, based on the vindaloo, should really be worth trying. Having searched in vain for a really good Indian restaurant in Norwich we were delighted to find this place...hands down the best Indian restaurant in town. The cost including Loads of drink was £62 which is amazing value. It’s not the most exclusive area of Norwich which is reflected in the prices. They could double the prices, open in Benedict street and they would be packed or every night.

Popped in here after a vague memory of somebody saying it was good - SO glad that we did.

Delicious food and fantastic service

Very accommodating staff - looked after our bags for us, happily prepared a low-salt option for one of us. Food very good, especially the dosa.

As my wife has to be gluten-free, selecting a suitable restaurant when we are out can be a challenging experience, especially when we are in a location as visitors.

A wonderful meal. A great treat to have almost everything on the menu gluten free. The food was beautiful, such wonderful flavours. Prepared for your personal taste. As we will medium it was all prepared that way but if you like it hot, no problems, they will do that for you. Wonderful, helpful staff. Will worth a visit.

Probably the best Indian food I have had in Norwich, family run, fresh cooking, not the usual premade sauces most of the curry houses in Norwich use, try the thali, exquisite, and the fish curry is delicious, to top it all off, very reasonably priced, will be returning ASAP, will not disappoint

Literally the best Indian we’ve eaten outside India - an amazing veg thali - everything was so authentic and the service was faultless - perfect and highly recommended!

We were party of four on a Saturday night. Everyone enjoyed their curries, which had depth of flavour. The staff asked how spicy we'd like our meals, we all said medium. Have to say, that wasn't particularly hot but didn't spoil enjoyment. Will return. It did take a while for the meals to arrive but was worth waiting for and it was a Saturday night after all.

Went here with a few of my friends on a Friday night. The food was delicious and freshly cooked. The restaurant offers a wide range of authentic South Indian food like and it is reasonably priced as well. The service was excellent and the staff were very friendly. Visited whilst in Norwich and wanted south Indian food so found this on TripAdvisor. The first thing to mention is the service and how hospitable the owners were to my family. We ordered a lot of food which included the cutlets and masala dosa's for starter which were magnificent. The curries we had were so flavoursome and not oily which was good. The parathas were just like the ones my aunty used to make in Kerala, delicious. My daughter loved her mango lassie so everyone was happy. Great value and will visit again when in Norfolk. If you want great curry which is reasonable you have to go to Cafe Malabar.

Tasty buffet at the Malabar held once a month. Go up as many times as you want. All the meat and veggie options were really good and a little pud too which was a cardamom flavoured rice pudding.

The food is of a high standard. It's all about the taste isn't it or why do we bother. I believe it is family run business, very friendly. The restaurant is clean, the decor could do with a slight updating.The food tastes more authentic than the regular Indian food that we are all used to, would recommend this restaurant and takeaway.

Friendly staff, great atmosphere and good food

Authentic, mostly south Indian dishes. The food is very tasty and just the right amount of heat. I would definitely come here again. If you will have a chance, try their buffer which they do once a month. I think on last Saturday of the month when you can try many of their delicious dishes

Authentic Southern Indian food. We indulged ourselves in 3 courses. Each offering us a food we had never tried before.

5 of us visited here on a Saturday night, we booked online but it’s a large restaurant, so we could have just turned up. My wife worked in south Indian and loves South Indian food so was excited to visit.

We ate here last Thursday and Friday. We found the food to be wonderfully tasty and reasonably priced. The staff were very pleasant especially Anthony Thomas the owner. We highly recommend this restaurant.
