Cafe Le Raj in Havering

Guess it was a victim of the pandemic,but in any case Cafe Le Raj is permanently closed. Plenty more Injuns in Upminster but this was definitely one of ,if not the, favourite.

As the lockdown kicks in we decided to order a take away to try and have a "night out in" if you know what I mean. I had some Cobras and wine chilling in the fridge and we laid the table rather than sitting in front of the TV. Had a decent lamb madras and an excellent King Prawn Pathia, along with onion bhaji, mutter paneer and sag also, all of which were rather good. I appreciate that there are many people out there who aren't being paid and are struggling. But if you do have a few quid spare give them your support, and you'll cheer yourself up whilst doing so.

We have been coming to Cafe Raj for a number of years and always find the staff very friendly and welcoming. We attended on Friday 14th, booked early of course and were as pleased as ever with all four dishes, the sides and naan breads. It was also also a nice touch with the balloons, decoration and roses for the end of the evening. Looking forward to our next visit, Dave, Deb, Steve and Gill.

This is a nice friendly Indian restaurant, the food is pretty tasty and there is the normal Indian selection of meals and drinks. I would recommend trying this restaurant as it’s fine.

Been going to restaurant since it opened, no longer live in the area, was visiting for the weekend. Decided to pay a visit . Food and service 1st class as always . Something’s never change.

We had terrible experience tonight. Ordered takeaway and they sent us 3 burned naans (see the picture below), absolutely disgraceful. They ruined our family dinner. I do not reccommend at all.

Had a takeaway tonight, was absolutely terrible. The food was of very poor quality and chicken BURNT. I am not going to waste time writing a long review to say how bad this meal was. Please see attached photo of the chicken and you can see for yourself. Most of the meal went in the bin. Next time i will not be lazy and rely on delivery and collect from Kushoom Bugh opposite which is absolutely quality food and service.

Went in here as it was the only place with empty tables.....that should have been a warning. The food was rather bland and smelled odd . The waiters were nice enough but strange how all Indian restaurants are not run by Indians !! A bit pricey fro what it was...will not return .

We were staying in Chipping Norton for one night whilst on route further South and came across this restaurant by chance. It was Sunday evening and the restaurant was fairly quiet but the service and food were excellent. The restaurant owner was friendly but not intrusive. Would definitely return if we were in the area .

Have been using this restaurant for many years and thought it time to share my experience with others. A warm and friendly welcome no matter how busy they are. Food wonderful, always served by professional staff on pre heated plates. Good portions. The chicken is second to none, so succulent and tender. Thoroughly recommend the Cafe le Raj for excellent food and value for money, a must visit.

The food is excellent every time - I haven't had a better curry anywhere else; service is great and prices are reasonable. Probably my favourite restaurant in the world.

Was due to eat elsewhere only to find that restaurant unexpectedly closed for a ‘family function’. Their loss was our gain! Eating with my beast of a friend who favours protein above carbs we did the usual ordering a starter each followed by 3 mains and two sides but no rice. Lamb Dhansak (Madras hot) superb with plenty of meat and well spiced but not over the top. King Prawn Madras - four prawns. But MASSIVE. Nice gravy again and well balanced again. Chef Special - Ghurka’s Revenge (I think?) - tandoori lamb with minced lamb and again, well balanced. Very very tasty. Sides: Tarka Daal - slight twist as there were other pulses as well as the standard lentils. Bhindi Bhaji - WHOLE okra yaaaaaaay - as opposed to the tinned or minced / chopped okra usually favoured by most restaurants. Well cooked and lovely flavour. Great staff, nice Management and intelligent conversation. We will be back. Thank you. PS - decent Cobra too 👍

The food here was really nice, we shared the mains between the four of us. My chicken & mushroom biryani was excellent, my wife had a chicken dansak which was also good. Can't remember what our friends had but it we also good although the naga was too hot for me. Service was good even though the restaurant was full and it was reasonably priced. Definitely recommend it, would go back.

Lovely birthday meal as usual. The food is tasty and plenty of it. One of the best in Upminster. Service is quick but you don’t feel rushed. Definitely worth a visit

My family and I have been coming here for years. Every time I go to other Indians, I am always underwhelmed. Service is ok (aside from 1 time out of probably 100) and the staff are friendly. The Food is delicious.

We decided to stay local, couldn’t be bothered to drive.

An hour to get a drink, 1hr 40minutes for food and rude staff and manager. They said they were busy but only two tables had any food. Very disappointed. Won't be back.

La comida te aquí es siempre increíble y el personal te hace sentir muy bienvenido. Hemos estado comiendo aquí por 15 años y nunca tuvimos una mala comida. También hacen que las cosas no está en el menú si lo pides lo que es bueno ya que mi esposa es vegetariana. No puedo recomendar este lugar.

went in here on the off chance,phoned the kushoom bugh but the toilets are still porta loos outside didnt fancy that ,so ordered dansak which wassweet hot really good the service was friendly and quick not too dear will go back

Fui con un grupo de 8 amigos y todos nos lo pasamos una noche fantástica. El servicio era excelente y la comida era muy sabrosa y se sirve en platos calientes. Había algunos platos poco usual que era bueno para ver. Nos quedamos bastante tarde y no teníamos prisa fuera del restaurante. La comida también era una buena relación calidad-precio. Volvería otra vez.

We have been eating at this restaurant for years and also used them for takeways, they are very friendly and the food quality is excellent, you won't be disappointed!

Been coming to the Raj now for a number of years and we can say we always receive a great welcome and a faultless meal from the starters through to the drink on the house at the end of your meal. We are amazed that this is not the first choice Indian restaurant in Upminster, we have tried all the Indian restaurants in the area and only the Ginger Lounge comes close. I know the last reviewer stated it was a bit noisy and I would have to agree as this is normally the case on Fridays and Saturdays as it is very busy

Booked a table here for four people at 8pm, had to wait by a very cramped bar for 30min, until table become available, when seated the staff was very nice and got our meals ordered in good time, the food was nice (no where near the best I've tasted) two problems, one is very bad for parking, and two the noise of everyone talking etc was over powering, at some points i put my earphones in my ears (no music) just to take the edge off the noise a little, I personally wouldn't go there for a meal again,

Went here on the off-chance and wasn't disappointed. The food was lovely. Partners madras was exceptionally hot which was good as he always moans it's not hot enough and I enjoyed watching his eyes watering! King prawn biryani was excellent as was the peshwiri naan. Would have been 5 stars but had to keep calling the waiters for a drink and they didn't take away the old glasses and also the 'After Eights' are too old fashioned!

having eaten in all of the local curry restaurants, this is by far the best,the quality of the food and the flavours are so much better than any where else,it is a little more expensive than the 3 others in the same street but its well worth it

Came here with my wife a couple of weeks ago. Had to wait 20 mins for stable as they were very busy.The food and the service was great. Highly recommend the tilapia!

We only go to the Raj because we have never had a bad meal. Always super hot food and plates. Great staff, very welcoming and a good atmosphere too.

Wednesday evening, busy, excellent, recommend. This place is better than the rest. FACT. Great staffThey refill the onion salad if you empty it, (that's a first) Waiters always seem to be near you when you need something. Reasonably priced, can customise what you order without making it a big issueNice place to be, not dark and dingy, Nice people use this restaurant to!!Give it a try, you won't be disappointed.

Visited on Valentine's Day.On arrival the wife was given a red rose which was a nice touch for Valentine's Day.Staff always friendly and helpful.Excellent food.Good ambiance.Value for money.

The atmosphere is friendly and the cost was reasonable at £79 for 4 of us to eat including popadoms and extras. You had 6 dips to chose from including a lovely mint sauce. The food was fast however sometimes I felt you were still chewing and your plate had gone. The finger towels were hot and the complementary chocolate was better than most.Fine dining no, value for money yes.

Excellent food,great ambience,refurbished dining area ,reasonably priced wines and friendly and attentive staff. What more could you want from a modern Indian restaurant ?No hesitation whatsoever in recommending this restaurant.

This review is long overdue. We have been coming here for many years and the service and food never falters. We are always well looked after even when we haven't visited for a while. Staff are lovely and food is consistently good so we will always return whenever we get the opportunity.

It looked promising when we arrived at 7:30 as it was very close to full. Unfortunately we had to wait about 10 minutes for our booked table, which is probably a first, and were shown to a very small bar area. When we did get a table it was rounded and with 5 of us seated there, it was a bit cramped. They did have a few varieties of tables so I guess we were unfortunate.The food was generally of a good quality. The rice was better than most I've tasted at Indian restaurants. The curry I had was on the hot and spicy side, which probably suited most other people, but I've always preferred it a bit less so. The following morning I didn't feel too good. My best guess was it was this meal, though I can't be certain.The service I would give a maximum for effort, though courtesy given lacked eye contact and was a bit loud. They were efficient, and pleasant on leaving.Overall a very average visit and I got the feeling that a future visit would be better.

Delicious food served in a friendly atmosphere. Waiters are extremely helpful, particularly with food allergies/diabetes. Definitely the best Indian restaurant in Upminster in my opinion!

I have been using this Indian in Upminster since it opened in 1999. Outstanding service and food, never had a single thing to complain about either eating in or taking away. Always well decorated and spotless, I wouldn't go anywhere else.

As long as this relates to the same Cafe Le Raj in StMarys Lane Upminster a place I visit most Friday nights. Recently re decorated to high standard this certainly reflects on the staff who continue to be superb as they have always been. I don't need to look at their menu because they will give you whatever you want and it is first class. The food is wonderful served on very hot plates and the selection of wine is fine but the Cobra is great. May this restaurant continue. See you all on Friday

Very welcoming & nothing is too much trouble. The service is great & attentive.. The Raj has a warm feel to it. It's very clean & the food you can not fault. After your drinks order a lovely selection of pickles, onion etc were offered with popadoms. I have never eaten in there and had a bad meal or service. The food plates come up hot so your meal does not go cold. It has recently been decorated & new chairs added, which are very comfortable, adding to our relaxed evening. King prawn garlic is a must, but there is a great selection of dishes.when we finished our meal, warm wrapped flannels we offered for our hands, also a nice touch was we are offered a drink on the house. Eg a small baileys, simbuka.. Sliced orange, chocolate mints are given whilst sorting your bill, again a lovely touch. I highly recommend the restaurant

I have used this Indian restaurant for many years. You always know what you will get Never disappointing totally consistent in quality taste and amount I have never ever had a duff meal in here Wine is not expensive, it is served cold and perfectly pleasat

Great meal with friends, brilliant atmosphere and the service is fab - We arrive at around 9 pm and got a table straightaway with no prior booking. As soon as we ordered our food, within 10 -15 mins everything was on our table and smelling great might I add, thanks guys....

We continue to try a number of the Indian restaurants in Upminster on a Friday evening, but always find we come back to Cafe Le Raj. You will find it hard to beat the service levels, the quality of food and how they will adapt any meal to your choice. Plates are always hot and food execution is always of the highest presentation and extremely tasty whatever your choice.They remain to be very competitive with their prices and we have always received a complimentary drink on the house. This is the only restaurant that we believe delivers a consistent level of food and service on a regular basis.Well done to all, we always look forward to returning.

We always have a curry a couple of times a month and wold go nowhere else. We always book in advance but have taken a chance and always get a table. The food is great and very reasonable and the staff second to none. A truly delightful eating experience.

We use this restaurant nearly every week for a take away and can honestly say it is the best in the area and we have tried a few! The food is always well cooked and tasty and we receive free delivery to Hornchurch and it always arrives piping hot. Would recommend the chicken tikka masala and chicken tikka jalfrezi. Unless anything changes here, I cannot see us using any other Indian as this one is perfect!

We went here for my Daughters birthday and were presently surprised. Waiters were attentive and courteous and when food arrived it was delicious, not the normal Indian at reuse the same sauces for different dishes.My wife had trout which was served without any sauce, but had been marinated in spices and then grilled and served on a bed of lettuce. She doesn't normally like all the sauces in Indians so she very impressed and finished it all. Other dishes included Cod bhuna, two veggie dishes and chicken curries. All were excellent and even the wine was good and for a reasonable price. Would definitely return soon.

Undoubtably the best Indian food in Havering at this moment of time, the food is consistently very good, if you have a favourite that's not on the menu just ask your waiter, nothing is to much trouble. Ask for their salmon tikka in what ever sauce you want, it's superb but not on the menu.Staff are great they always have time to chat and get your dishes just as You want them.Advisable to book on a Friday and Saturday evening to avoid disappointment .

We went here a couple of weeks ago on a friday night. we really enjoyed the food and the service was brilliant. Very quick and the food was really tasty. Will defo head back soon

I've been to this restaurant countless of times and always find the food delicious and service friendly. I always get the chicken tikka starter - cooked to perfection every time. The meat is succulent and juicy with herbs and spices marinated through the meat.Meal for two normally comes to about £35 with poppadom + starter, main course, and a drink or two - so extremely good value considering the quality of food you're getting.Give it a go! Making reservation on a weekend is definitely recommended. The place gets rammed!

This restaurant is the best of all the Indian restaurants in Upminster. I know this because I have been in all of them. I have eaten in the restaurant and had many takeaways from it. The food is just lovely and the staff are very friendly and helpful.

Amazed by previous post about this restaurant. We visited on Friday 1 November at 7.45 and were fortunate enough to get a table as we had not booked. Again, as always we received first class food and excellent service which has always been the case in our previous visits. We often frequent a number of restaurants around Upminster and if you are an Indian food lover, we believe you will find it difficult to beat Cafe Le Raj for value and quality of food.

The food was of a strange taste,all of us the next day suffering from stomach upset.When I tried to contact the owner I was told he would be there the next day....so I went around the back of the restaurant to see if he was...big mistake....I actualy saw where the food was cooked and lets just say I nearly saw my meal again through being sick. The kitchen was disgusting and meat was left on the side with wasps and flies all around it...no wonder our stomachs were bad !! A woman working next door came out and asked what was the matter..when we explained she said" do you really expect that they would go and buy the most expensive meat and take care of it for you".......we no longer eat Indian food !!!

You will always get a professional service and first class meal here. Good value for money and gracious enough to always offer a welcome drink on the house

Fancied an Indian, nothing local to us so thought we'd try Upminster. There are 5 within spitting distance of each other on the junction of St Mary's Lane & Station Road. Three looked a bit empty and one was packed to the rafters. Cafe Le Raj had a few tables free so we gave it a try.Place looks fairly new, well maintained, loos clean and in good repair (state of the toilets are usually a good yardstick for the restaurant). Hubby had starter and main course that included a naan, I had a starter then three side dishes for my main course, no problem with the unusual order. Food arrived quickly on nice hot plates. Staff very attentive and drinks and refills arrived promptly. My three side dishes were excellent but quite large portions so they packed me a doggy bag which will be my Sunday lunch.Considering it was a spur of the moment decision if was a lovely evening out.Only downside is nothing to do with the restaurant, parking in Upminster is a nightmare on a Saturday evening.
