I’ve been an avid supporter of Lanka since 3/4 years ago but I have been disappointed in the last 2 visits - the range of cakes has changed dramatically. They used to have a raspberry charlotte cake that was the go-to treat for birthdays but they don’t do it anymore. I suspect the chef has changed and unfortunately it doesn’t stand up well against its competition. I keep hoping for it to go back but I think this ‘new’ Lanka is here to stay.

It's ok, if you want cakes from "a cake shop" rather than a supermarket. You might want to spend a bit extra for a cake box. But we are now 2021 and there are so many other good looking and yummy cakes in London. The menu has been the same since 20 years ago ( as far as I know) - old fashioned triangle cut cakes and less effort decoration. probably the hence, the price range are the same as the supermarket cakes. But I'd rather pay extra for a joy and the excitement of the food which I don't eat everyday. The quality is poor, very sugary taste without any flavoursome or fruitness. Do you expect a good taste of Matcha? unfortunately not from this shop. I can not see any passion from this shop either. I would've been able to scrap some of my negative thought if the customer service was ok.but... I had to wait more than 10 min for entering to the shop in a cold day. There were only two customers before me but three staff inside. One of the staff was preparing the cakes at the back of the shop, One lady was busy stocking cakes from another fridge as they have small tray which has only 4 slices of each kind. It looked like their manifesto of filling full in the showcase at all time. She was so busy filling from tray to tray- if one of the four went sold, they have to fill in!!!!! Who cares waiting another man next to the person who is being served. He was so patient without been asked even Hello or I'll be with you shortly... A lady who only engaged to the customer could not focus serving either as she had to tell which cake became short to her colleague. What a poor customer service! Additionally, they have only a few kind in a morning.WHY? if you go to the cafe or bakers, they are full of pastries or bread on the counter, aren't they? So actually I came back after 12:30 for more choices. well... at the end it was just waste of my time and money. I won't go back unless the shop improve its menu and customer service. well. having said that I'd rather go soho/covent garden for more excitement.

There's a lightness of touch with every single thing about this place. If you think it's crazy that regulars will often say "see you tomorrow" to the staff, then you've not tasted Lanka's cakes. A perfect symphony of French and Japanese techniques, flavours and textures elevates your favourite cake to Lanka standard. The best cakes, tarts and pastries in London? Quite possibly. The teas aren't bad either.

Made from the freshest ingredients by a Japanese chef who fuses eastern japanese style flavours with parisian type desserts to create a mouth-watering feast fit for the Queen. Having heard such marvellous things about this place I just simply had to go and I'm so glad I did. Location wise it is a very short walk from Finchley Road Underground Station (turn right at the end of the big Waitrose and you're there) so whilst it isn't exactly central, you don't have that far to travel. But believe me you're going to be glad you did. As soon as you walk in the ambience is amazing, there's relaxing background music, and the shop design is out of this world. This is before you feast your eyes on the amazing treats that are for sale. French patisserie treats, some with a Japanese twist like Green Tea Chocolate Gateau, all look so good the only problem you'll have is choosing which one. I tried the salted caramel tart which tasted as good as it looked, and a slice of Green Tea Paris Brest to take away and enjoy later. Even better they do whole cakes and celebration cakes to order so of you really want to impress people you definitely need to try this. Drinks wise there is a wide variety of teas which I can't comment on as I'm not a big tea drinker but I understand they are just as impressive as the food. I however went for a coffee as they serve Monmouth Coffee which is probably the best you can get as far as I'm concerned. There are seats in store so you can enjoy a cake and drink whilst soaking up the incredible atmosphere, however they are very limited (only 8 if I remember correctly) so it's best to tone your visit very carefully. So yes I definitely will be going back and I can't recommend this place enough so if you're in London then put this place on the top of your must visit list

I have been in this lovely patisserie two times. There are so few sitters usually always full (good signal). The display of the cake is amazing. They are very beautiful, croissants as well.Fast and polite service. The first time I took to take away the green tart. It was the first time I tried a sweet with this particular flavour. In my opinion the base was too thin. A lot of cream with this nice mocha taste. So at the end was too much sweet and boring for me.Anyway was nice to try.Today I chose green tea fruit roll (I don't remember the real name but you can see the cake in the picture).I was very looking for a whipped cream cake because it's one of the rarely sunny day in London. Although I am not a sponge cakes' fan It was the right choice. A green tea sponge with a heart of whipped cream and fruits. I know that it is hard find a good balance between sponge and cream and depend also on the personal taste. Anyway the mocha flavour balanced the sweet of the cream and the acid of the blueberry was lovely. (3.60 £to take away)Good size. The price of the items are not cheaper but they are always fresh and you pay the quality.I will return to try the green tea pudding :)It is a good bakery, particularly, if you are looking for something new.

I went to Lanka following a colleague recommendation. The place itself is charming, but be aware that it is small and you might have to wait to be served. Chef Masayuki Hara has achieved a level of brilliance for such a delightful and beautful French menu, except for the canneles, which were extremely dry and gooey. However, the raspberry tart and the blueberry tart were exceptional. Very much recommended if you´re trying to avoid "turist trap" patisseries and the virus spreading cake chains.

My friend and I made it our mission to go to Café Lanka when last I was in London. We were not disappointed. The marriage of Japanese and French cuisine and ingredients is a harmonious one indeed! We shared a slice of a green tea Swiss roll-like cake, which contained strawberries and blueberries and kiwi, and a slice of hazelnut tart. Both cakes were beautifully presented and delicately flavoured. Neither of us could decide which was better as they were of such a high standard. Jasmine green tea served as a perfect accompaniment. As for the other aspects of the experience, the shop itself is small, with only three tables, but the décor is elegant and satisfyingly minimalist. The woman who served us was informative and very friendly; she even explained the origins of the gorgeous cups and saucers they use.I would most certainly return and am happy to recommend it heartily.

I feel lucky to find Lanka in London, as after 9 years of living in Japan and moving to London I've been missing hugely some of the cakes you can enjoy there. What I like about Lanka:1) The selection of cakes is unique: a good combination of Japanese and French cakes. Especially I would recommend to try: yuzu cake, green tea (matcha) panna cotta, cheesecakes etc, mont blanc cake ( delicious and exactly the taste I enjoyed back in Tokyo) and chocolate fondant ( although I usually don't like chocolate cakes in general, this one is just a piece of art and taste).2) The cakes are not overly sugared, so you can really enjoy better each cakes particular taste (chocolate, fruity, matcha) and allow yourself to even try several without feeling guilty for overeating sweets:)3) The warm and delicate Japanese service (if you experienced it once, you know what I am talking about).4) Good value for money: the piece of cake is on average 3-4 pounds and are absolutely fresh and delicious. The only possible thing to improve I can think of is the lack of tables to sit inside and enjoy the cake inside the cafe (there's only 3-4 tables).

Popped in here as we were staying nearby and fancied some sushi. Service and food were excellent with an extremely helpful and friendly waitress. The gyoza was cooked to perfection and served with a nice spicy dip and the signature crispy roll was very tasty and went well with the vegetable selection. Will definitely revisit before we head back home.

Had a delicious lunch. Was too busy eating to take good pics. Loved the whole experience of the food being cooked at the table. The beef was delicious as was everything we had. Especially loved the prawns, chicken wings and bbq veggies. 50% off on most dishes until next week. Definitely worth a visit. Very good service.
