Cafe In The Square in Fife

Had lunch here based on Tripadvisor reviews and I totally agree with the excellent rating for this super cafe! Busy Saturday but quickly seated, order promptly taken and then fantastic tomato and basil soup, egg mayo sandwich on lovely brown bread with salad, cheese and ham toasties with crisps arrived for us to enjoy! Substantial portions filled us up all day on a visit to the University Open Day. We will be back!

This cafe is very popular & always busy. Often you may have to wait a few minutes to get a table but it is worth it. Only had to wait a very short time which was good as it was at lunchtime. Today we ordered a chicken salad & a Ham & cheese salad, They were made to look very appetising & indeed they were. very decorative &plenty of it ,no skimping. we were served freshly made bread in a basket also. We also ordered a pot of tea, Our lunch did not disappoint, so, so tasty., Staff were very attentive. will return again

Always visit here when we go to St Andrews. Very dog friendly with both outside courtyard dining & inside being dog friendly. Fab menu offering lots of options including vegetarian - soup & sandwich being one of my favourites, & prices are very reasonable. Staff always friendly & welcoming. Just check their opening hours before you visit as they are currently closed on Sundays.

Dog friendly and the staff could not be better. Attentive, helpful and just fantastic with our dogs. The soup and sandwich were very tasty especially the vegan options. Excellent experience

First time here after trying so many cafes and pubs in St Andrews all I can say is we will definitely be back. Friendly young staff in a very busy cafe. Decent menu. We decided on mug of soup and sandwiches which came with side salad or bowl of crisps. The cream of tomato soup was thick and tasty I enjoyed my tuna mayo sandwich on nice brown bread husband liked his cheese and chutney. Finished with two nice americanos couldn’t manage cake or scones which looked good. Definitely be back next visit to St Andrews.

This is a busy wee cafe and we didn’t think we would get a seat. Servers were very organised and had us sit while they cleaned and readied tables as they were vacated, so that we were offered inside or outside seating. Service was very prompt with little waiting for food, which was a lovely spiced lentil soup with crusty bread. Soup was beautifully seasoned and nicely warm with spices - I’d love the recipe as that is hard to achieve! Followed by fruit scones with jam and butter. We both left feeling like we had had lovely food, and the best service ever - we are middle aged, so that’s a high bar!

A lovely wee cafe ,friendly staff and the food is always fresh and absolutely delish you cannot fault it good portions too ,not too pricey either.Scones are my fav 😁

We took our dog to the cafe and enjoyed a lovely tea and hot chocolate in the shade within the hidden outside seating area. The staff were friendly and gave us a couple of dog biscuits, which was really appreciated, and the prices were very reasonable.

The soup here is addictive! I’ve been for lunch three times in the past two weeks and I could honestly eat here every day. Sandwiches and hot drinks are also top notch. Definitely plan a visit if in St Andrews

Popped in here after a walk along the beach and had a mug of soup with a sandwich followed by a scone. The soup was tasty and fresh tasting and the sandwich couldn’t have gotten any more filling in it if they tried. Tons of meat and relish, cracking. The scone was huge but not dry and with a nice pot of jam to go along with it. Toilet was kept very clean and the staff were very welcoming and pleasant. All in all a good wee find and would highly recommend.

Had lovely tea and cakes in this cosy little gem of a cafe which isn't full of students on laptops ! Nice staff and ambience, not overly priced either for St Andrews .

Stopped in for a quick bite of lunch, and it was delicious! Just ordered a bowl of their soup of the day which was Sweet Potato and Lentil. It was so hearty and yummy. Came with a large slice of thick, crusty soda bread that was equally good. The scones and pastries in the bakery case looked wonderful. Apparently lots of locals eat here, and I can see why. It is not a huge cafe, and there were people waiting for a table. When we were paying our tab, the waitress asked if everything was okay. I told her I LOVED the soup and jokingly added I would like the recipe. She went in back and got it for me from the chef!

Amazing chicken salad w cumin and coriander mayo! Best chicken salad sandwich I have ever eaten. Homemade brown bread was divine. I am small and don’t usually eat a lot but I ate sandwich and homemade crisps and dared a scone! So glad I did. Best scone of my life w raspberry jam! Never had a meal with 2 life bests before. Scotland is in my heart. Especially cafe on the square! Hats off!!!

What a gem to be found in St Andrews. Lovely and clean, comfortable cafe. Good and very reasonable. The 2 girls who served us today where excellent. Well mannered and very pleasant. It was a pleasure to be served by them.

We went to the cafe yesterday for lunch I had a large bowl of pea and ham soup my wife had a small bowl of sweet potato and lentil soup which came with fresh crusty bread which was like door stops !!! Soup and bread was first class small cafe but extremely busy with people waiting for tables as we did however it’s worth the wait 👌 apologies meant to take photos but forgot as was straight in and enjoying the soup and bread so much.

Was looking for somewhere in St Andrews for lunch, that was also able to meet the needs of a coeliac. This cafe had a wide selection of baguettes, paninis, soup and drinks, with scope to order gluten-free sandwiches. The soup of the day was excellent. Will return next time I am in St Andrews.

Tucked out of the way but very popular, and for good reason. Various bread options for sandwiches including gluten free as well as vegetarian and vegan options for fillings. Home made soup was delicious, coffee was very good and our sandwiches were very tasty (including smoked applewood vegan cheese and tomato chunky). Staff were excellent, calm and friendly which was reflected in the relaxed vibe and with people queuing. Warm, clean environment with art on the walls. Bonus of being dog friendly. Definitely recommend.

Brief 10 minute wait for a table. Pleasant enough atmosphere and lunch selection was limited but well prepared and tasty. Staff and service was exemplary and on a parr with a well run hotel Can’t recommend this aspect enough.

A wee gem.of a cafe...tasty bowl of soup, good selection of sandwiches, baguettes etc , home baking and the girls who served us provided exeptional service at a busy lunchtime! So friendly and hard working they are a credit to the place.

We popped in for a late lunch. I had the sandwich and salad with soup. All of the meal was superb. We could see some nice desserts but the main course was too filling! We need to return to try them next time. Our waitress was lovely too.

We were visiting St Andrew’s from Edinburgh and were recommended to come here. We were not disappointed. A busy well run cafe- had a short wait for a table, but thoroughly enjoyed our sandwich lunch. Would certainly return on a future visit.

On our 1st visit we sat in the courtyard as it was a lovely day. Ordered soup and sandwich. Soup was piping hot. Sandwiches were lovely and fresh. Staff were really helpful when we asked about gluten free options. Dog friendly as well. Revisited on the Thur as a group of 4 with a dog. Had popped in early to ask if they could keep a table for us as we had 2 teenagers with additional needs so needed a quietish table at the back of the cafe. Girl was really helpful and said she’d sort something out even though they don’t take bookings. We returned in 45 mins and the place was mobbed but true to her word the lovely staff had kept our chosen table for us. We ordered sandwiches, chicken salad and a gluten free roll. All were delicious and thoroughly enjoyed by us all. We can’t thank the staff enough for understanding our parties needs and going above and beyond for us. It’s not often you find places as accommodating as the lovely girls at Cafe in the Square. We will definitely be back when we’re next in St Andrews.

Went with my mother & granddaughter. Had the most embarrassing situation when a member of staff gave us a row in front of everyone to wait at the till & in the queue to placed at a table as we were sitting down. I had already stood in the queue and been placed by another colleague. Will not recommend to my local friends. Very embarrassing. There are lots of great cafes in the town.

Frequent visitors to St Andrews but have never visited this cafe. We visited on an 'Eat Out to Help Out' day so had afternoon tea and cakes at VERY reasonable prices. Food quality was good, as was the service.

During a recent mini break to Dundee my husband and I returned to this wee cafe in St Andrew's. It was very busy with tables having to wait about 10 minutes but worth it. I had the soup and sandwich combo and my husband had the toasted baguette. Both portions were more than enough and the bread was nice and chunky, along with the homemade soup. We will certainly use them when next in St Andrew's.

Muy decepcionado con nuestra visita de hoy. Fuimos queriendo comer algo ligero, sabiendo que era un sábado y que estaría ocupado. Me sorprendió conseguir una mesa afuera, me ignoraron repetidamente. La camarera explicó que habían estado muy ocupados, entiendo que el sábado estaba un poco irritado, ni siquiera nos habían reconocido, pero he estado antes y sé que la comida es buena.Sin embargo, todos teníamos vasos de agua, el vaso del que mi hija estaba bebiendo noté que tenía un chip en el interior una vez que casi terminamos nuestro bien. Le dije que dejara de usarlo en caso de que se cortara la boca. Lo levanté para moverlo y me di cuenta de que en realidad había un pequeño fragmento de vidrio dentro del vidrio flotando en el agua. Le entregué el vaso esperando que alguien se disculpara y eso sería todo, en cambio el servidor se llevó el vaso y la otra chica preguntó si había algo más que quisiera. Le expliqué que no, que vendría a pagar, pero esperaba al menos una disculpa, su respuesta fue decirme cuánto les debía. Lo que admito golpeó un nervio. Dejé la cantidad exacta diciéndoles que se quedaran con la disculpa. Ella había ignorado por completo lo que había dicho, sentí como si el dinero fuera todo lo que les interesaba, incluso si el vaso hubiera cortado la boca de mi hija. No era que no estuviera contento con la comida o el café lejos de eso, nos habían dado un vaso que podría lastimar a mi hija, sí, era pequeño pero desafortunadamente no era el punto. Tan decepcionado con la forma en que se trató que ahora no volveré, ¡ni mi amiga o hija!

Was looking for a nice place for a tea/coffee break with my family who have visited from Glasgow. When walking in we were not greeted at all and asked for a table of 5 to which the girl (medium height, brown hair) rolled her eyes and said ‘we only have tables of 4 but you can pull a chair up’. We decided to sit outside which we told the two girls. Waiting 10 minutes no one came with a menu or to take any orders, when we came back in both girls (other one taller with blonde hair) rolled their eyes again and handed us a menu, at which point we decided to take our money somewhere else where we felt wanted. Extremely disappointing customer service and really put us in a bad mood on such a lovely day. Would highly recommend We Are Zest Cafe round the corner, much, much better.

Been here many times over the past few years. Never been disappointed with anything. Food is tasty and simple but sometimes simplicity is more. I’ve always been more than satisfied with a lot of the food I’ve had. On one occasion I ordered the sticky toffee pudding and thought it was too sickly and sweet. I’ve had better ones around St Andrews but apart from that no complaints on the food. The service is majority of the time polite and nice but one occasion the waitress didn’t seem pleased to have us come in and have lunch and was emphasised with the lack of care and attention when the ordering the food. However. This was just one occasion so I’ll still continue my custom here.

Delicious ham and cheese sandwich, with fresh salad and coleslaw. Went about 430 and everything still fresh even though near closing time. Would definitely recommend. Without exaggerating I think it make have been one of the best sandwiches I have had. Service excellent as well.

Après une ballade en bord de mer et en flânant dans la campagne écossaise, une petite trouvaille bien agréable cachée derrière l'église. On se pose avec plaisir pour caler une petite faim avec une bonne soupe et un bon sandwich et surtout des jeunes filles très agréable pour le service.

As per the title this is a pleasant and peaceful place to enjoy a coffee and cake. It has a vaguely Scandinavian feel. Lunchtime soup is very good but perhaps not the place for further eating.

Other eating establishments weren't serving for an early lunch so we ended up at Cafe in the Square by default...and it was wonderful. Great soup, great sandwich, great scones and wonderful service.

We previously visited this cafe 3 years ago and once again finding ourselves in the area had to revisit. It is a brilliant wee lunch stop. Delicious food (soup and sandwiches) and speedy service. Oh and the cakes are devine! 100% recommend. We will return!

Yo también comí un chocolate caliente (el chocolate con leche) y podría ser el mejor chocolate caliente de la calle Andrews. El café estaba bastante ocupado, y tienen una buena selección de cerámica local para la venta. Recomendaría una visita!

La comida es genial. Tuve una pequeña sopa de lentejas y además de deliciosa estaba llenando. ¡Cuidado si pides un tazón grande! El sándwich y la taza de sopa es una gran idea. Dropped in at lunchtime for a light bite and a coffee. Soup, cake and coffee all delicious. Cafe is bright and clean and the staff very welcoming.

Never have we been treated so rudely in the East Neuk. We stood inside waiting for attention as one member of staff checked receipts and the only other prioritised her soft drink. St. Andrews business levels clearly create complacency.

Lunchtime on a Monday, tables available which was promising. Menu was basic but a reasonable selection, we decided to have Coffee and sandwiches. When we eventually caught the attention of the waitress and began to order, we were told that they weren't doing sandwiches. Only options were soup and bread but only white bread. OK, bread and soup it was... Unfortunately, the soup was stone cold and the bread was supermarket basic. My wife had to go to the kitchen to complain... Soup was partially heated and we ate it... the waitress told us that there were only two staff on duty which is a reallpoor excuse. Another customer gave up and simply walked out which we should have done. I will be surprised if the cafecontinues in business for very much longer.

Had lunch here. Baguettes, sandwich and salad were all very fresh, well made and tasty. Coffee great. Scones fresh today. Great place and will continue to frequent.

This is a lovely little cafe I stumbled across ...the Red Velvet cake was deliciously moist with was compliamented with the Americano. Not to mention the fantastic service from Nikki! Will definitely be visiting more often.

Estuvimos en la calle Andrews durante 2 semanas durante la semana Open Championship y Senior Open Championship. . . . comenzamos la mayoría de los días con un Cappuccino de Cafe in the Square. . . que afectuosamente llamé Square Cafe. . . . . . si nos perdemos por bfast haríamos una parada en algún lugar del día para conseguir uno. . . . cada día pensé que podrían ser ligeramente diferentes. . . . seguramente no podrían ser perfectos todo el tiempo. . . . pero estaba equivocado. . . . . eran exactamente lo mismo todas y cada una de las veces que fuimos allí. . . . un café fuerte y suave con leche de vapor batida que era tan esponjoso que era casi como tomar un postre. . . . ¡YUM! ! !

Qué oferta: un sándwich completo (prueba el pollo con pavo y arándano o coronación) y una taza de sopa servida en una taza de café. Tenía sopa de zanahoria y cilantro, que era espesa, rica y deliciosa. Una comida abundante en un ambiente acogedor pintoresco clásico. Mi hija es una estudiante aquí, y dice que es menos descubierta por los estudiantes así que es un hallazgo fabuloso. Servicio y ubicación justo en el medio de la ciudad. Morning coffee and cakes with friends. Right in centre of St Andrews, although slightly hidden. Coffee was great quality and well made, and fruit scones were just out of the oven with jam. Good drink and cake deal. Nice solid wooden tables. Will definitely revisit.

Sopa y bocadillos nunca dejan de agradar, todo recién hecho servido con ensalada. Pasteles y bollos también son deliciosos. El personal es atento y, a juzgar por lo ocupado que siempre está, ¡no somos las únicas personas a las que les gusta esta pequeña joya!

We wrote a poor review after our last visit, in April, and are we’re back there for the first time since then, yesterday. What a difference. The soup was delicious and definitely home made. The coffee as great, exactly how we like it and the service was like night and day. We’ll be back !

Íbamos de excursión a st Andrew, y teníamos ir a comer. La comida a la que estoy acostumbrada es muy distinta a la que se come en Escocia, ya que es más pesada, pero aquí me comí unos sándwiches muy buenos y a muy buen precio. Además pudimos comer en la terraza y al sol.

Stopped and sat outside with dog and had a really good decent strength and not too much froth cappuccino which was hot, perfect, how often do you pay for coffee and it’s Luke warm and more froth than liquid, this was perfect, also had great scones and home made raspberry jam from friendly staff. Will definitely return and try more than just scones. Also very reasonably priced.

Three of us came for lunch yesterday. The staff are friendly and helpful and the food was excellent. I had the chicken curry soup which was very tasty and spicy (I love chilli but this might be too hot for some). The bread was very fresh & crusty. My husband had a chicken and salad baguette which was also very good with nice chicken & fresh salad. I am very fussy about coffee and the coffee was the best I've had in any cafe for years! It's filter coffee (not americano) and was rich without being too strong and bitter. I was also pleased that they had cream to go with it (too many cafes only have milk which ruins coffee). We will definitely go again.

You'll love it. Very tasty. You will have food left over. Leave room for the scones. Sandwiches and soups are well paired.

Had the most enjoyable lunch here. The bacon and lentil soup and my turkey and cranberry sandwich were both excellent. Service was excellent and everything was served up with a smile.

We’ve been coming here for a few years and unfortunately this visit is likely to be our last. The soup always used to be delicious but this time it was fairly awful and certainly not home made. We asked for double shot coffees in small cups and the coffee we got was truly dreadful ! The girl serving us was not at all pleased that we complained.

My friend and I arrived in St Andrews and were looking for somewhere to stop for a quick lunch. The staff were friendly and quick (be warned the café does close at 4.30pm). All the food we had was delicious and decent priced. The home baking is a must. Would definitely go back!

Wandering about in the freezing wind on Saturday, looking for somewhere to have a coffee. Found this place and opted for soup and a sandwich - what a plateful and what lovely soup! Looking forward to returning when it's a bit warmer in St Andrews!

We have gone to this cafe every time we are in St Andrews (once a month on average) and it never fails to be excellent.
