We popped in not knowing if we would eat in or takeaway as didn’t know what to expect. With three children we felt like the vibe probably wasn’t right for what we wanted but decided to grab 4 cakes to take away. The lady serving us (possibly the owner) was very knowledgeable about what contained dairy, she was very kind and friendly. We ordered carrot cake, Rookie (cross between brownie and cookie) millionaires shortbread and a walnut and chocolate brownie (dairy free) which came to £19.55 the quality was very good and the cakes were delicious. I will definitely return and would recommend it for couples and cosy catch up lunches with friends.

Came to Saffron Walden today and found this place All cakes are home made and you can tell as they are delicious Hubby is gluten intolerant and the young lad was very knowledgeable and it was nice that he could enjoy a filled roll that wasn't made with pappy supermarket bread thawed in microwave as he usually has to have! Prices are on par with everywhere Thank you

I've been coming here for years whenever I am in Saffron Walden and popped in last week for lunch. Upon leaving we decided to grab some takeaway cake as it looked so appealing and has previously always been amazing. At over £5 a slice for takeaway, this is not a cheap treat so imagine my dismay when I open the box to find what looked more like half a slice of cake than a full one. I immediately mailed Coucou with a photo but they have declined to reply hence this review to warn others of the huge potential to be severely disappointed when opting to eat out rather than in (admittedly the service could have been the same had we opted to eat in but I would at least have been able to politely decline my half a slice of cake had I eaten in). Sadly we won't be back, there are plenty of other lovely cafes in Saffron Walden where you actually get what you pay for.

We had Take -away coffee and a couple pastries to take out. We then decided to sit at a Table for five minutes . We asked a staff Member behind the Till if this was okay . She said yes of course , I will wipe the table for you . All good .We heard the lady behind the food counter speak rudely to the other staff member behind the Counter which was not the best impression. We were then approached by a staff member who basically asked us to leave as there was a queue forming and we had not paid to sit in . This was embarrassing as each table is quite literally inches apart . The table next to us had their plate taken away and the child was still chewing ! If it was mentioned that we could not sit down, no problem but we were offered a table to sit down after paying and take away cups in hand ! The Till member was at the time being nice and was the only one who was!

We've been to Cafe Coucou numrous times this year and I've been meaning to write a review as every lunch has been delicous... we've worked our way through the menu!! The staff are always friendly and helpful. The sandwiches have all been very generously filled and full of flavours. The BLT is especially good! So too the brie, bacon and avocado. The photos shows a filo pastry quiche which was first class, we've had three variations during our visits and all have been excellent. The chicken, bacon and avocado salad is one of our favourites... so much chicken and bacon. The scones are still incredible too! You are never rushed and with the windows often open it's always airy and fresh feeling inside. Looking forward to our next visit which is luckily only a week away!!

Thank heavens that this Artisan bakery, cafe and "cakery" is an hour's drive away else I would be there every day working my way from left to right at the wonderful range of baked on the premises bread and cakes...and that would be after coffee and toasted sandwich and of course cake. Although we visit Saffron Walden a few times a year, this was our first visit to Coucou. Having fallen out of love with our regular eatery, we came across the window of the cafe/ bakery and knew it ticked the boxes. Friendly staff and food that actually tastes as good as it looks be it toasted sandwiches or superb cakes...plus a bag of goodies to take home. Definitely our new go-to eatery. https://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/ShowUserReviews-g315967-d967899-r891443714-Cafe_Coucou-Saffron_Walden_Essex_England.html#

CouCou bake their amazing bread on site and serve absolutely delicious salads and sandwiches. The warm goats cheese and walnut salad is gorgeous and my kids particularly enjoy the prawn salads and sandwiches and the home-made scones are a thing of beauty. The only thing limiting my score is that it is quite expensive. It's worth it for the quality of food you get however, it's just somewhere we can't visit as often as we would like because of the cost.

I couldn’t recommend it more highly because I always know there is something I can eat there, which is a very reassuring. The cakes and scones are huge as are the sandwiches so you always feel you are getting value for money. The cafe is in a characterful building on three floors and I don’t think there is a lift. The thing that cheesed me off most though, was that having ordered a plum tart for dessert, I was charged an additional 85 pence for the privilege of a small pot of pouring cream. I'm afraid I won't be a returning customer.

Cafe CouCou is great for a catch up with friends. The food is excellent so is the ambience and the service is exemplary. However the food is a tad expensive but overall is worth it.

Photographs can't do justice to the wonderful food coming out of the kitchens from this deceptively wonderful little cafe. So that's why I'm not bothering to post my photograph of our prawn and marie-rose doorstep sandwiches, served on a choice of breads with a choice of chutneys for the side salads that comes with them. The quiches looked divine. So did the scones. And cakes. Huge portions. Charming, friendly service from the young team out front. Simply gorgeous, and we wish we lived on its doorstep, as we'd be there every week. Or every day. As it is, we don't live that nearby, but we WILL be back!

Amazing scones in the window is what drew us in! We had a light lunch but heavier and more filling lunch are available. We shared one of those scones, as with most cake they looked better than they tasted as it was a bit hard - shame.

Spread over two floors this cafe is usually very busy and it can be hard for those with a buggy or in a wheelchair to find/ access a seat. The food is delicious (although not much choice if you have dairy / egg allergies which my son does). Prices are higher than other cafes in town but you do get quality as well as quantity! Personally I would prefer smaller portion sizes and smaller prices. That aside, Saffron Walden has loads of cafes but this one is definitely one of the best for either morning/ afternoon tea or for lunch. They also have a great selection of bread/ cakes to take away.

This is the best coffee shop that we have ever visited & whenever we are in Saffron Walden we pop in for our coffee break. We always receive a genuinely warm welcome whenever we enter the café, as do all their customers. We have tried so hard to wean ourselves off of the huge freshly baked fruit scones & have one of the other many homemade cakes also on offer, but fail each time as the scones are so lovely. The cafe also makes fresh sandwiches and pasties together with a massive assortment of delicious foods. The staff are always very welcoming to all their customers & the price that you pay for anything here is very reasonable considering that you are paying for fresh quality food.Whilst there are quite a few tables downstairs, there are many more upstairs too.If you’ve never been here before then you are missing out !

I stopped here for a quick bite before going to a client, boy was I surprised. Very attentive and polite staff, but the choice of bread and filling was great.i watched them fill my sandwich in between 2 thick slices of and what seemed to be endless amounts of filling, that together with a nice balsamic salad and a nice cup of tea would do anyone proud. If I had to make a small observation the teapot was chipped, but other than that I would thoroughly recommend this place

The savoury and sweet pastries in the window made our minds up for us, we would not eat out tonight but snack on a selection of their goodies. It worked perfectly, well satisfied.

I love that there are still some independent cafes in Saffron Walden - there are too many big brand chains in a fairly small town!! The venue itself can get very crowded particularly at lunch time but its worth the wait. The sandwiches are huge and a couple in our party had to share theirs due to its enormous size!! My prawn and avo wrap was delicious - there was a generous amounts of prawns and avo which was lovely as sometimes I find the lettuce and "salad" rather dominates the wrap content. We went back later for afternoon tea and had walnut loaf with maple syrup and clotted cream OMG it was divine and definitely not to be missed. The staff were very professional and obliging, they helped us rearrange the tables to accommodate our rather large party and provided us with excellent and friendly service. It is a bit on the pricey side but the quality of the food makes it worthwhile! Will definitely be back!!

Surprised that there were several tables downstairs at 12.45 .....they did fill up towards 1.30. We both had welsh rarebit with salad. Thick slices of granary bread, tasty cheese and salad. Very nice! I had said how fantastic were the scones ...so we shared a fruit scone with jam (no cream). We were a bit disappointed - needed a bit more fruit as a consequence needed to be a little sweeter. Not as good as I remembered - and for the size of the scone it really needed another little pot of jam if we were not having cream! That said it was a good lunch, but suggest the staff could be a little more pro active.

Visited for the second time today for lunch. Great coffee (I'm a bit of a coffee lover so if it's not good I'll say so!). My friend and I both had the pear Stilton and walnut tart with salad. The tart was to die for but the salad although fresh and varied (leaves, feta, olives, sundried tomatoes) was a little bit underdressed and dry - I didn't indulge in the cakes but they looked lovely. Would definitely revisit.

We often pop in here for lunch when in saffron walden on a Saturday. The sandwiches and salads are always lovely. Very generous portions and always nicely presented. It gets extremely busy so get there early or be prepared to wait. I would recommend asking for a table upstairs. Downstairs gets very hectic with people squashed in waiting for tables, to the extent that we almost had a gentlemen perched on the edge of our table when we were last there! The small space was so crowded the waiting staff could no longer see us and we waited for ages trying to attract there attention to get our table cleared and choose a cake. None the less, a lovely place to take a break.

This is one of our favourite places to go for coffee and cake or even lunch although you must arrive early to get a table at lunchtime - it is very popular and tables fill quickly. The breads and cakes are excellent and baked in-house with lunches that range from very filling sandwiches to very large and creative salad dishes. My husband's favourite is the cumberland sausage sandwich, although to describe this as a 'sandwich' is an understatement. I frequently enjoy the salads and specials. If you are being 'good' then you will enjoy the shortbread that is served with the coffee. If you don't have room for a cake after lunch, you can always buy some to take home! Friends we have taken have not been disappointed. I do hope you enjoy your visit.

I love the food there and the wine I ordered is very fruity. I didn’t give five stars for the service only because a waiter looks very rude and not willing to help to bring another set of cutlery to a seat where I already sat down with my friends. I have to bring that set to the seat that I want to sit. This is a minus in the experience.

The Landlord is a morbidly depressing person holding a hound dog expression and struggling to raise a smile or engage in a conversation . Very off putting not at all welcoming

Make sure you book well ahead of time, were were these on a Tuesday lunchtime and the place was packed. They have a varied menu and sell wines by the glass.
