The food and drinks were excellent cooked exactly to order. The café is compact with 4 tables for 2 so space is tight for such a busy concern. We have no objection to the presence of dogs however a large boisterous puppy isn’t an ideal dining companion. It’s a shame that our experience was tainted hence the 3/5 instead of 5/5 star rating as would have otherwise scored. Please note no offence is intended

I was pleased to find a breakfast place that opened early that had GFO options in North Berwick. The food was lovely, well cooked bacon, the spinach and mushrooms was really delicious and complemented eachother nicely, the toast and butter was delicious too.Friendly and efficient service. The decor was really nice too.The summerfruits juice burst was really nice too. There is only 4 tables for 2/2 tables for 4/1 table for 6 1 table for 2/1 table for 8(just listing some of the combinations, these are all as part of the table for 8)so as this is a small cafe, you may not be able to get a table. But You can take out breakfast, food and drinks. The music was lovely too.Centrally located and right by the seaside.

Was in for lunch today and I would highly recommend this cafe. The baked potato was piping hot and the egg mayo filling was delicious. It was accompanied with a salad which was fresh and just the right amount. My partner had the soup and sandwich combo which she throughly enjoyed and would have again.

Purchased 3 take away scones this morning...had most certainly not been baked that day as you required to chew them and they were £1.80 each. The sandwich etc counter looked lovely, but seemed a lot of stock out at the one time even though now take away, with a couple of tables sit in.Window display very poor with a "limp salad" and tired looking other offers. Hopefully will get some better reviews and then we will give it another try....good luck.

My wife and I fancied a light lunch on a cold wet and windy day in North Berwick. There are any number of restaurants and cafes in the town. We decided on the buttercup because it looked very inviting and welcoming. And so it was: the atmosphere was bang on as was the decor: off beat with lots of interesting art works. There were surf boards hanging on the walls. The coffee was delicious; so was lunch. The two people who served were fab. Go there: they deserve your support!

Four of us managed to get a table here last week, it was very busy. We don't live in the area just visiting North Berwick but have always gone to the Buttercup over the years. Staff very nice, we had soup, panini and scone. The vegetable soup was very watery and tasteless and my scone was like shortbread it was so hard. When paying the lady asked if everything was alright and not wishing to offend we said it was OK. I have to say the panini was fine. This establishment has obviously been taken over since we were last here, we used to get lovely thick soup, fresh scones etc so I don't know what's happened. I don't think we'll be back.

(Apparently made by one of the owners Debbie )Small traditional cafe with 6 or 7 tables , limited menu but quality not quantity All foods freshly made .Soup and sandwich combo outstanding and generous portion, Wide selection of home bakes and freshly brewed coffee Served by the delectable Debbie ,ever smiling and taking time to interact with every customer.Makes every one feel special and you leave fed watered and with a smile on your face .

Called on regular visit to North Berwick. This was our favourite cafe for lunch and always full of the same regulars we have got to know over the years to have a chat with. Admittedly it has gradually become more run down over the last couple of years and alas it's now changed into a self service sandwich bar. All the character has gone and the place was empty. No hot food served - seems they can't be bothered as there is a big kitchen, and what there is, is quite expensive! Chatting to a local in the street who we used to speak to there, she said that hardly anybody in the town goes there now. Such a pity that a lovely business like the Buttercup has gone.

On a regular visit to North Berwick we headed straight for our favourite Buttercup. What a shock we got...less tables and a totally different way of obtaining what you want ie no waitress service. You now have to go to the counter, pick what you want and then pay even before you get the food. To make matters even worse they no longer do hot food so no breakfasts/hot rolls ,baked potatoes, macaroni etc. It is just soup, sandwiches and a small selection of scones and cakes. We did decide to give it a try but were not impressed as you could only get the baguettes that were made up and on the counter and some were “very unusual fillings”. Several other people came in, looked around at the changes and left. On previous visits we always saw and chatted with "regulars" who have been going for years and none were to be seen! The only consolation was that the very cheery server (Julie I think) is still there. The business will probably not last in this form which is a shame as it has been going since 1962. Finally, all I can say is “ANDREAS PLEASE COME BACK”.

So disappointed to find that our favourite North Berwick cafe has reopened after a refit as a self service sandwich shop. No tasty, good value home cooked lunches or hot filled rolls any more, just soup, sandwiches and a small selection of scones and cakes. The town was buzzing on a sunny mid term day and most cafes were busy but the Buttercup was virtually deserted where in the past it would have been packed. Why change a winning formula? Hopefully the drop off in custom will prompt a rethink.

Visited here today and was very disappointed. We have visited here on a number of occasions and have always been very happy with the food and the friendly staff. Now they don't do breakfasts or hot filled rolls. They still do soup and scones and some cakes but seem to concentrate more now on filled baguettes. We had soup and we're presented with the bill before the soup even arrived. It seems such a shame to change this place and as we were the only ones in the regulars were conspicuous by their absence. Maybe the price changes didn't help. As the old saying goes if it ain't broke don't fix it.

A slightly cramped and basic interior, but a fairly wide range of snacks at good prices. Scottish fried breakfast was very good and macaroni cheese was excellent. Decent coffee too. The menu changes according to the time of time - so the choice isn't as wide as it seems

Visited here for breakfast on our way home from Edinburgh. Staff very welcoming and friendly. Excellent 'Traditional Scottish Breakfast' with a pot of tea each, cooked well and fantastic value for money. We were planning on getting one of the tasty looking scones afterwards (the cakes looked amazing) but the breakfast filled us up! Really enjoyed this little cafe and would definitely recommend!

Literally just got up and walked out after reading the menu prices. We were here last summer for lunch, had one of the best bowls of Cullen skink soup to date, came back specifically for that today as in the area, only to find that for one bowl of soup as a starter was £9.95 or for a large bowl of the same is now priced at £15.95! FOR A BOWL OF SOUP! I know it’s a tourist hotspot, but take off your Dick Turpin masks No 12!!

Was rank, coffee was weak and hair in my pastry.. wouldn't recommend to my worst enemy to be honest. Would recommend Gregg's round the corner in all fairness.
