Bun House in City of London, Westminster

Whenever I go to London I stop by to eat some buns. This time I was lucky enough to go during Easter, so I was able to try their special white peach bum. It's a place I love and will always recommend

Bun spot in Chinatown particularly known for their salted egg yolk bun. For £11 you can get any 3 buns so we opted for their most popular chicken, pork and of course custard. The pork was good but quite standard in flavour - probably could find a similar taste in any other bakery / bun place in the area. The chicken bun was my favourite as it had a coconut chicken curry filling which was great and quite unique, reminding me of some Indonesia curry flavours not easy to come by. Their famous custard bun was not too sweet and quite subtle in flavour. For some this would be good but I can’t imagine this being all too satisfying as a dessert. The price is somewhat high too. Each bun is around £3.80 which is quite steep and you don’t save much for getting 3. All in all, if you want buns there are likely better places where you can get more value. Will have to try some of their other offerings such as their savoury snacks and kaya toast but for now don’t think it would be high priority to return.

I had a custard bun. The bun was very good, fluffy. However, I had imagined the filling to be sweeter, it tasted too much like eggs for me, so I would actually give it 4.5 stars. You have to be careful not to get dirty when eating, but the pack is very helpful in staying clean. The service is friendly and quick.

Most fluffy and tender steamed buns I’ve ever had. The pork filling brought me back to my visit to Japan - but all of them are great. They are not kidding with the squirting sign on the front - the custard filled bun is very runny but tasty.

Had to try the custard bun. It was good. Other half manager to cover himself in custard. I didn't laugh. Yes I did.

I went and ordered both sweet and salty buns from the shop but for such long queues it was incredibly underwhelming. There was also no good cutlery to use, only tiny wooden toothpicks that made eating a pain. Not the best experience.

Very good, super fast and efficient service. We went there when it opened on a Saturday to avoid the line, but overall the turnover seemed pretty quick. The only downside is that in terms of comfort, it's a little tight with the bench seats, but it's a great place for a quick lunch and not too expensive.

Tried their signature custard bun and it tasted good. Had a queue when I visited. Service was quick. They don't accept cash payments.

We had vegetable and custard buns The custard was very thin and when we opened the bun in half it almost splashed us with the very hot liquid ,so be careful there ! But is was good. We expected a thick custard haha. The vegetable bun was out of this world amazing ,it had mushrooms and some vegetables but you could taste them and it had a bit of a sweet hit to it the buns itself was really good too , soft and so fresh ,if we get a chance we will go again.

Tried 3 buns for 11£, had the beef, pork and lamb. They were incredibly fluffy and quite tasty, would have liked a bit more filling to them as it was mostly just fluffy dough. Very nice packaging!

Place in the heart of Chinatown. Small place with a few seats, it does a lot of take-away food! The buns are very good and soft, I took the vegan alternative and I liked it.

Very enjoyable meal, especially the buns, light and tasty, they melt in your mouth! We are very happy with our choice given the plethora of options in the area. Very reasonable prices for London.

Yes, they're good. The custard bun was packed with yellow filling and will spill over all over the place if you're not careful. But it's worth the risk. The buns itself are sheer perfection of chewy, fluffy, pillowy, puffs of clouds. Must have snacks to have in Chinatown London.

Super good stuffed rolls. We ate pigment, chiken and lamp. All good. It's worth visiting China Town in the evening for a cooler atmosphere.

Went on a Friday evening around 5:30/6pm and was able to get a seat for one. Loved the custard bun ❤️ and kaya french toast

Omg the buns are so so good. In busy days there can be a line, because the local is quite small, but it's so worth it. And i highly recomend a crispy tofu too.

A sufficient bun. I tried the vegan bun, with chicken and with mushrooms. Lots of bread, not very tasty and really minimal filling. Unfortunately I also found them quite difficult to eat as they were chewy and didn't have that typical melting consistency. A lot of hype which I find unjustified! Friendly and very quick service. Small but well-kept place, it is also possible to dine at the tables inside.

I liked the bun with sheep the most!!! Dessert toast very very good! Finger-licking good. Free water :)

Delicious and fluffy pastries, but don’t be stingy with the filling! These pastries are absolutely delicious—soft, airy, and perfectly baked. However, they could be even better if there was more filling. A little extra generosity with the stuffing would make them perfect. Great taste, just needs a better filling-to-dough ratio!

Not sure what the hype is about this place. The menu is confusing, the buns dry and have little substance. The custard ones are surprisingly runny.

Very tasty buns, we tried all of them except for lamb - please beware that custard bun is REALLY sweet and there's a lot of custard that might run down your hands when you eat lol Overall very nice, but if you want to actually be full after eating there (full sized meal so to speak), it's going to be minimum 3-4 buns - they are quite small

A real shame, as ive been coming to Bun House for a number of years, but won't be returning. The buns themselves, as always, are tasty, but moving onto the other menu items proved a mistake. The squid was fried to hell, 2 inedible orders, the waiter forgot 2 lots of dimsum, which when appeared 25 mins later than the rest of the food, were equally inedible, rubber pucks. To top it all, the waiters didn't bring any cutlery after serving, forgot drink orders and then, unbelievably, started clearing food away, then stopped half way and left to speak on their mobile. No, they didn't come back to clear the rest fo the plates. If we hadn't been waiting 30 mins to get in, and another 1.5 hours there, I'd have pit up more of a fight. Instead, we left and won't be coming back.

Buns were very good but menu was a bit sparse and pricey

We tried the chicken, pork and custard (egg yolk, carrot, coconut) bun. The chicken bun (with lemongrass and curry) was our favorite. Friendly personnel as well. The custard bun I spilled all over myself because it was so runny. But still delicious

You can eat on site or take the food away. I can recommend the buns with chicken, curry and lemongrass.

A nice place with really tasty and not expensive Bao. You have to wait in line for a while, but it's worth it. Will we come back? Maybe, but definitely not for takeaway, but on site to try some more dishes.

I tried all six flavors (for three people) and I can honestly say that everyone can find something for themselves. This sweet version is amazing, as everyone in our group confirms. The queue may be long, but it goes quite quickly and it's worth it.

For takeaway, nobody does bao better. End of story. Every single flavour of bao is amazing.

Edit (08/03/2025): after some years going back to Bun House, price of the buns increased, but I would still go back because I loved the food. Today I had such a bad experience that honestly I don't think I will be going back anymore. All the other times I went the place was organised with two queues at the entrance, one for takeaway and one to sit in. Today they said it was the same queue for both. We waited a long time at the queue where everyone was getting takeaways, but we wanted a table for 4. Finally we get to the front desk and asked for a table for 4. They told us it was a 5-10 minutes waiting. We waited for 40min to sit-in. And during this time they started asking people in the queue if they were waiting to sit-in. Suddenly two pairs of people go ahead of us to sit inside. We asked them again about the table, and they keep saying we needed to wait. Two people of our party decide to get a bubble tea while we were waiting. Finally we are called to sit-in. When our friends arrived at the restaurant with the bubble tea, they say they can't come in with the drink. A drink they don't even sell it there. We had already ordered food for everyone, but basically our whole dinner experience was gone. The staff clearly doesn't care anymore if you're having a good experience, I felt undervalued as a customer. It's a shame, I used to loved this place, the food and the service. But today I was very disappointed.

Great place in the center of Chinatown. Not just the buns, the rest of the menu is excellent too. Highly recommended!

Very tasty food. We went in to try... we ordered: Hot Asian BUNS 3 pcs.: chicken, beef, custard and 3 pcs. SHU MAI (dumplings with pork and shrimp). All good. The best buns with chicken, because the taste was reminiscent of curry. We paid £21 (including mineral water).

Food taste/quality has decreased significantly. Poor handling of waiting for tables. We had a terrible handling of a basic situation: our friend was drinking bubble tea and was ready to have lunch at the restaurant but she wasn't allowed to come in with her drink.

Really nice restaurant, although it can get quite busy during peak hours, however even during its peak hours we were seated in about 5-10 minutes. The buns are very yummy and for their price I definitely recommend!

We ordered three buns: Pig, Beef, and Custard, and we loved them all! Be careful with the Custard one—it’s squirting and can get messy! Great size and flavor, definitely worth repeating.

WARNING: the optional discretionary service charge of 12.5% added on the bill is not optional here. They only removed 14p after asking to have it removed instead of removing the entirety of it. Food is tasty, too bad buns are more loaf than meat sadly. In addition, you have to wait 10 min before you can seat to dine in. The three buns set at 11 pounds deal is only for takeaway, when you dine in it's 3.80 each non-negotiable.

We ordered the pork, chicken, vegetable and custard to take away. They were all very good, we took the “egg” one as a “dessert” because we knew it was sweet but it was also good

My girlfriend & I tried the salt n pepper squid and whoah — so good. Those flavors & seasonings. I could order a party tray if I could, it is seriously amazing.

The buns were amazing. I got one of the pork buns and honestly don’t remember what the other 1 was lol. There was a line to sit in however, ordering to go wasn’t too bad and they were pretty quick with it.

We took three buns: good. The dish in the photo is the same, while we didn't like the ravioli. Even iced tea is a surplus. They seated us right away, but then the service was a bit slow. I had to ask for water twice and he brought it to us halfway through the meal.

Bun House sells out fast, so arriving before opening is a smart move! We tried the chicken bun, packed with bold lemongrass flavor, and the beef bun, rich in umami with a peppery kick. The custard bun was a highlight—warm, oozing, and deliciously messy. A small spot with big flavors, it's worth the visit—just be quick before they’re gone!

This is a very busy restaurant, get ready for the queue. The queue is for takeaway or dine in, there are a few tables on the ground and first floor. We tried some of the dishes from the menu and the food was very tasty. My favourite was the dim sum, really delicious. Thumbs up for the French toast dessert it's quite yummy and not too sweet, it is a must. The service could have been more organised. Highly recommended

The restaurant wasn’t open yet, and there was already a line. Luckily, we were served fairly quickly, so it’s recommended to go early. The buns were tasty, as was the kaya toast (though very sweet and not the kaya I’m used to from Asia), but definitely not worth the hype. It’s also quite expensive for what you get.

The custard filling in a bun is too liquid.

A disaster in every way. Tiny and chaotic place, run by rude staff who yell at you if you don't order immediately. Mediocre food, ridiculous portions and absurd prices. A frustrating and irritating experience that I wouldn't wish even on my worst enemy.

The Bun House is really an absolute recommendation! We ordered the combo for £11 and were able to choose three from the different buns. The buns themselves are wonderfully soft, and the fillings were simply delicious - each one a highlight. The packaging also left a lasting impression: it is not only practical, but also very visually appealing. We can highly recommend the Bun House to everyone!

As I follow the review my experience with this is not that great…Pork buns is ok not as tasty that i expected,custard ones is good, wantan is good. Basically the bread bun is nice and light but stuffing is 3 out of 5 It could be more favouring

Best buns ever—amazing on the outside, soft and delicious on the inside!

We went here mainly for custard buns. They were nice and runny (my family enjoyed it); i am not a big fan of egg yolks so not too thrilled. I will go back for other things on the menu, which was looking extremely nice. The waiters there were nice and friendly. Really wanted to provide good service.

Bun House in London offers delicious steamed bao buns, with a combo of three for £11. There’s often a queue, but it moves quickly. You can dine in (no reservations) or take away. Great quality, reasonable prices—worth a visit!

Bun House in Chinatown, London, is a great spot for delicious food, quick service, and high quality. We had a short wait of about 5-10 minutes in the queue, but it was well worth it. We tried the Chicken and Custard buns, which were warm, fresh, and full of flavor. They have a deal of three of the buns for £11 so even though this may seem a high price it is worth the price. There is seating upstairs in the shop but the takeaway counter is downstairs. It is easy to find on the main high street, the shop is bright and easy to spot. The packaging was convenient, making them easy to enjoy on the go. If you’re passing through, I’d definitely recommend stopping by!

I love the food at Bun House. Honestly, the buns here are some of the best in London. Why I gave them a bad review is that the service was horrible. There were 3 of us at the table and not only that the waiter didn't speak English well and he couldn't understand what we wanted, but later (my bad because I didn't check when we paid) they charged the 3 buns set as individual orders, hence we over paid. I honestly advise people, if they come and eat at this place, to be careful how much they are charged. PS for the owners - hire people that actually know the menu and don't overcharge people, it won't get you anywhere. After our experience, I don't want to go there anymore.

Considering we queued up at peak time on a Saturday the queue moved surprisingly quickly. About 15 minutes to the front then waited about 5-10 minutes for a table. They have the menu outside so we knew what we wanted and ordered straight away. The buns are all ready to serve straight away, other dishes take about 10 minutes to cook. All very nice and fresh and particularly where it is you could easily get ripped off or have something poor quality if you’re not careful. Definitely recommend here. They do takeaway as well, which if you want buns only it’s immediate as soon as you order.

A very good address. The best buns we have ever eaten, ultra soft, fragrant. On the other hand, there was already a queue before opening at 12 p.m., we still managed to get a small table for 2 inside. You can also take away if there is no space.
