Browns Lane Bar and Restaurant in Charnwood

Well where do we start, hadn't been to Brown's for a few years but we thought we would give it a go for a change. Once we were seated the waitress (who I presume was working her first ever day, as basic training of greeting the client with a smile seems to have been missed off) proceeded to take our orders. On ordering the starters which there was only a choice of two (lunch menu) we were told one wasn't available...not a big choice. We declined. In the meantime the drinks orders were taken , the waitress (trying her best with limited training) did not know what lagers or ciders were available !...anyway food ordered , I went for chicken with a spicy mayo, slaw and skin on fries....I got a KFC zinger tower burger.. and no slaw....menu description needs some improvements. Credit where credit is due the burger was tasty . My wife had the cheesecake....which was deconstructed a little too much. In todays competitive market you need to wow your customers in a good way. The place has potential but needs to up its game in a big way.... the tower burger was nice hence the 2 stars...

Dreadful experience. Waited 40 minutes for starters and then 1 hour and 40 minutes for main. My drink never did arrrive. The meat was stringy and the vegetables had to be left as they were too hard. When our desert arrived eventually the waitress apologised saying that she didn’t think it should look like that. It was green. It was returned. The meal had been bought by my son and daughter in law as a Father’s Day gift. I would have complained but din’t want to upset them. I wish I could have walked out as another group of people did.

Would give zero stars if I could. A wait in excess of two hours for a simple Sunday roast is in my opinion unacceptable. Especially considering that the restaurant wasn't particularly busy. The waiting staff seemed disinterested and the quality of the food poor. I wouldn't recommend.

Arrived at 3.30 and waited over an hour for a starter. No apology, no explanation, service staff entirely absent during this time. Items delivered did not match the description on the menu and some drinks not delivered at all. Really disappointing meal. I won’t be returning.

We can here Saturday for a meal as heard good things. We were not disappointed, the greeting, the service and the food were amazing. Glen is an absolute superstar working a whole restaurant in his own and never looks like he’s under pressure, an amazing man with a great personality and customer service. The new lady on the bar was sweet and polite. The one thing that did it for us and will be returning with friends is the music. It so wonderful to find a place in Loughborough that does not conform to the rowdy loud music and it was acoustic chilled and not obtrusive to our meal, we could also see that people were leaving tables to sit in the bar after their meal too which you don’t see very often. Will defiantly be returning and please don’t change anything guys it’s almost a better Browns Lane than it’s ever been I just hope everyone in Loughborough realises and uses you as their choice of what is the best meal in the area. Xx

This is one of the best spots in Loughborough! The staff were so lovely and made my friend’s birthday really special. The food was incredible and such good value. Can’t wait to go back!

Food and cocktails were great. Service was perfect. The only negative is that the only way you can tip is cash - who carries that???

In Loughborough to do a uni open day, stayed at Premier inn, very nearby. Hangry after a long drive we pitched up with no booking but we were welcomed by the bar tender in the downstairs bar and shown to a good table at the upstairs restaurant immediately. Great selection of cocktails and menu, Mac and cheese delicious. Philippa our waitress excellent. Be careful they don’t accept tips on the card machine, and there is no service charge, so they make tipping difficult! Take some cash!

Enjoyed a lovely dinner with my mum at Browns as it was highly rated on Google! It did not disappoint with great food and drink menus that would please all! Food was high quality, well presented and of a reasonable size for the price. Service was slick and friendly from Phillipa and overall we really enjoyed the meal!

Having noticed that Brwon`s Lane Bar and Restaurant was open under new management, we went for dinner to celebrate my birthday. We were very impressed with the new decor and the atmosphere was warm and friendly, as were the staff. The food was excellent, especially the scallops as a starter and the beef blade main course.. All were tastefully presented and the service - excellent. With such a welcoming and wonderful food, we would highly recommend Brown`s Lane Bar and restaurant to anyone in the locality or just passing on holiday. We will certainly be going there again!

Fabulous evening With my birthday fast approaching I looked at local restaurants to spend an evening with my friends after scouring google Browns popped up and I have to say the Menu was awesome We had great : drinks the watermelon mojitos are insane, gorgeous wine and amazing food Highly recommended the whole menu. Went here last night after hearing good things since reopening with new owners, chefs and menus etc. We were not disappointed! Food was better than it ever has been here! All 4 of us absolutely loved our starters, mains and desserts. It was just beautifully cooked and presented - plus it was very reasonably priced. The only thing hat let it down slightly was the service over the course of the night, our waitress focused on the two other tables nearby and we were left waiting a lot between courses and then even for the bill. Having said that, she was fairly young so I think it's just down to lack of experience. We all said we'd definitely go again! Can't wait to try other things on the menu 😍

Went today for Sunday lunch, inside is beautiful! Clean and tidy, decorated so lovely! all the staff were absolutely amazing, So polite, friendly and helpful. Asked for something to put my child’s uneaten burger in and they made the foil in to the shape of a swan! How extra is that! What more could you ask for? Sunday roast was to die for! Presentation in everything is amazing. Good quality of food. Pricing is good! I didn’t have a single complaint. And I can be fairly fussy I would 10000% come back here to eat and recommend to anyone who will listen. Thankyou so much for such a wonderful dining experience. They really went above and beyond.

Lovely fathers day lunch today. We were with our 2 kids who are good eaters but have some specific requirements (gravy on the side, always the fish option) and they were happy to oblige us even when it meant changing the set menu for our daughter. The good was lovely, everything perfectly cooked and the staff all polite, friendly and professional. Historically we have loved eating here and so new management to us is risky but the new management here are doing a really good job.

Today my wife, daughter and I visited Browns. Under new ownership (we have been many times to Browns in previous incarnations) we had a delightful meal. Our waitress (forgot to ask her name!) was polite, personable and very welcoming. The food was excellent, fresh and tasty. I recommend that you visit Browns if you are in Loughborough because you will have a good foody experience, in lovely surroundings. Highly recommended. Only one problem, not enough customers!!

Fabulous food, fabulous Ambience, great music, just a fantastic night all round. The whole family enjoyed it. The decor in the restaurant is fresh and modern, the waitresses/waiters are efficient friendly and nothing seems too much trouble.

I cannot fault any of the staff here! Not only was the food gorgeous, but we received the best service I have ever gotten with regards to me being lactose intolerant! When we booked I mentioned about being DF, to which they then organised a call for me to go through the menu with a staff member before our meal. Visited recently and the new owners and chef have done a great job! Can’t wait to go back. The chocolate brownie was delicious! Had chilli prawns and lamb rump which was cooked to perfection.

Perhaps it's Covid and everything is a bit unsettled, but Brown's Lane is not what it used to be. I don't like to be negative , but this used to be a favourite place to eat where you paid for and truly enjoy what you got. I'm hoping it's going through a transitional hiccup. This was the best resturant in town to get dressed up and have a special night out. It's not anymore. A hoody and jeans seem fine. Nothing wrong in that, but the town is full of good casual dining options. Casual dining it may be now, but it has retained its fine dining prices making it very expensive for what it is. Don't get me wrong, the food was OK and there was lots of gluten free choice. Its was just a bit confused. Tapas, burgers and classics but not a big selection on either. It seems to be trying to do too much but nothing exceptional. Service was fine. The welcome was abrupt and rude, which surprised us to the point we had to laugh otherwise we may have left, but where can you go at the moment if you haven't booked? Like the rest is us, hopefully it will find its way again soon.

Made a booking for me and my hubby and had decided we were going to have the 5 tapas menu. We were seated and ordered our food which did take a while to come. We ordered Patatas Bravas, prawns, chicken wings, tortilla and calamari which apparently all come with bread. The food itself was very nice tasting but the portions were so small. The small little dishes only fitted in a small amount and we queried why there was only 3 chicken wings to be told that’s the portion size ( there was 2 of us so surely equal amount would be best). Was still hungry afterwards so very disappointed

We had an amazing tapas evening, love it. It was served by a lovely waitress, good choice on tapas menu, all served piping hot.

To start off nicely the food was lovely. However, I have never experienced worse service in a restaurant before. Upon arriving we were 10 minutes late for our table at 14:00 (which we apologised for) and were told that the kitchen closes at 15:00 so we couldn’t have our table. We politely said that we could order with speed, so we were put in the bar entirely on our own and told that we were “not allowed to sit in the restaurant” as it was closing at 15:00?? despite us having paid and booked to go to a restaurant. After our mains we were offered dessert, however we felt very pressured and dis encouraged to order. The bill and card reader was brought over without us asking and I was told to finish my drink and leave. All in all, we were there for less than an hour. I’m not one to leave bad reviews, however as you can tell there was a lot more than one singular issue with my reservation. Why accept a booking for a time that isn’t suitable for your restaurant? Quality customer service should be given at all time including 14:00 when the “restaurant is open till 15:00”.

I was there with my family (3 people) for my graduation dinner. We waited a long time for our starters, as we watched other tables who arrived after we ordered get their starters including a large table (>10)The staff eventually noticed as they had clearly forgotten about our table.When we eventually got our food, it was very underwhelming. Another memorable evening with great company and incredible food. Great service, upbeat atmosphere and spotlessly clean. Highly recommend this if you want good quality ingredients cooked and served to perfection served by a warm, friendly and diligent front of house team!

We have visited Browns Lane numerous times whilst at university. Now coming back to visit it did not disappoint. Back to the old standard of high quality great food.

The character building and smart decor of the restaurant promise a more sophisticated experience. The service was either overly attentive or nowhere to be seen. The menu was a couple of laminated plain word-processed sheets, but read well. The prices promise something better quality than was served. The food was okay but not great. I had a beef stew served with a large dumpling and broccoli. For £15 I would have expected more than one vegetable. The stew was okay but lacking a depth of flavour for the price. There was also not enough gravy to enjoy the dumpling properly.I suspect that the restaurant is undergoing a transition and it may be yet to find its feet.

Visited the restaurant on Saturday evening, we were a group of five. Menu was great, catered for a range of tastes. Waitresses were attentive, readily noted down any changes we requested to some items (less tomatoes, swap white bread for brown). Food came on time and was delicious. I would definitely go back again.

Despite what others say I cannot agree with the statement that the menu is "extensive". I found it very limited. I had read up on the restaurant previously and read a load of compliments re Scallops, one of my favourite dishes. Since (it appears) their reopening they have got rid of this signature dish. The wine, I felt, was overpriced for its designation. The meal I had Pan Fried Chicken Supreme with sauteed new potatoes and tomato concuss whatever that is because there is no way a tomato had even looked at my dish!) was somewhat limited in size, though I have to be honest that one of my friends plate was piled high (home made beef faggots and mash). The only reason that I have given 3 stars rather than two was that the meal was fairly tasty but have cooked far better myself. Would not go back.

We had a great time on Saturday night, there was a large party of us and we had a great choice of menu, all at a reasonable cost. Jane and Emma were both very helpful and even though we had a few last minute changes, nothing was too much trouble for them. We will most likely be back again soon! Thanks for a great evening.

Ate here with 4 friends after previously eating prior the refurb and been really pleased with our dining experience. Ordered a bottle of wine and it wasn't available so we were offered another not on the list but we wanted a price before buying. After 30 mins we still had no wine despite the waiter finding time to serve a party of six with drinks. Eventually I suggested they charge us the price of the unavailable wine as a compromise as the waiter didn't really seem to know what to do. I don't think he'd received training on how to wait at a table, plates were removed while others in the party were still eating and a glass of white wine was just plonked on the table without being given to the person who'd ordered it. Maybe I'm being fussy but isn't that basic etiquette when you're a waiter/waitress? Thankfully the food was better though nothing special. I won't be going back in a hurry.

Our first visit since the re-open and nice but not great. Nice decor and friendly staff although service quite slow. Tapas was nice but I’ve had better locally (and cheaper). Deserts could do with some work - sticky toffee pudding good but luke warm and hubby’s cheesecake was thick base with a tiny spread of cheesecake on top. Overall nice but could be so much better.

This long-standing restaurant has had a makeover and change if owner... the bar is fine and the restaurant ok but couple of bits would make it better! Staff are friendly and ambience pleasant but our tapas were lukewarm although tasted fine.. the desserts are not cheap and the mousse and lemon cheesecake were ok but a bit odd texture wise!

I took my boyfriend here for his birthday as we heard good reviews. We ordered several tapas dishes and this is where we went wrong. When the food came out, all the dishes were cold, so we sent them back. When the new servings came out, some of them still weren't hot. All the dishes were extremely bland, with zero flavouring! Worst tapas we have ever had. Additionally, the gin and tonic I ordered was flat. Shall not be returning and I advise others not to go.

We have been dining here for over 20 years. We normally dine on a saturday night, and keep away from the end of term at the university. The decor since the refurb is excellent, great food and great service

This was booked for my step sons graduation lunch. We had to choose what we wanted before we arrived which wasn’t really a problem but if you had decided on the day that you fancied a pudding then you couldn’t have had it.

Beautifully decorated, nice staff, good value for money. Food looked really good on appearance had the scallops and mixed bread to start which were both nice! The BL burger and ribeye steak for main. There was quite a few items off the menu. The burger bun was rock hard and inedible and the steak was less than blue when I’d asked for rare. It was cold in the middle! The peppercorn and mushroom and Stilton sauces were amazing. The Pomme Anna had little to no flavour.

It was an unusual warm evening and upstairs in the restaurant was so hot which did not help but the service was appalling. They could not open the windows or close the blinds.

We attended this lunch for a graduation meal . A fixed price meal and steak on the menu. A party of 6. We all had steak (rib eye) The steak was very fatty and of very poor quality.The majority of it was not edible and was not eaten . There was a lack of veg. Not a cheap meal at £190. We commented to the waitress. She said she will tell the chef.. Although no feedback or reply from the waitress or the chef. We will not visit again Very poor.

Nice lounge atmosphere, the dining room itself is lovely with nice low music (so that you can actually hear yourself talking!)

We were on a Friday night stop in Loughborough in order to attend an end of term event at our grandsons boarding school the next day. Found Browns Lane on the internet and booked a table in the restaurant for 6pm. On arrival we were the only customers in the place which was a little concerning until we realised that the University was already on Summer Holidays!! By the time we left it was filling up nicely with savvy locals.

I went here with a friend of mine to try the evening menu, had a starter drink as we were early in the bar as we walked in then up the stairs to our table. Lovely welcome and left to choose our food. I had scallops, best I have had and then followed by ribeye steak in shallot sauce very tasty, and chocolate dessert with orange, had a floater tia Maria coffee which finished the night off a treat. My friend had the same as myself apart from sticky toffee pudding with violet ice cream, very special and unique, we had a great evening and catch up. Well done browns as back 8n a few weeks with a larger party for a retirement.

Was taken here last Saturday evening on a 1st date. Felt relaxed in there straight away having a drink downstairs before going up for the meal at 1/2 8. Very nice décor , lovely lighting. Was told immediately they had run out of fillet steak ( which I would have ordered ) we had the soup and scallops to start , best scallops ive ever had ! . Followed by a stuffed chicken dish and ribeye. Washed down by a lovely chardonnay. We both enjoyed every aspect of the place , Top food, service and ambience. We went for Mother’s Day 3 adult 1 child not a place for kids as there is no children menus, food is lovely service was poor 2 course meal took 2 hours with a little one was not good,drinks came wrong 3 times, did complain and we given something as compensation. Would go again but not with children

We went to Browns on Saturday night and it was fabulous. Great service all very attentive and smiley faces all around we really enjoyed it but the best part of the evening was my beautiful Vegetable Wellington, the pastry was just lovely, light and very tasty. I wasn't even aware Browns did a Veggie or Vegan Menu but I take my hat off to them, keeping up with the new way forward with eating, I know plenty of people who eat off the Vegan Menu and their meat eaters, so I would give it a try, I would recommend this restaurant to my friends and family. Browns Lane is head and shoulders above any other European Food restaurant in Loughborough. The food, tho not cheap cheap is high quality, interesting, tasty and served innovatively. The service is professional but friendly and the downstairs bar is cosy with a good atmosphere and they have a very comprehensive range of drinks I voiding several made to order cocktails. Highly recommended.

Been to various versions of Brown's Lane for decades but today was a disappointment. Service was fine,no complaint at all, but the food was canteen stuff and expensive for what we ot. Wine that we wanted was not available...how can a restaurant do this?
