I never knew this place existed until my better half told me her parents were going for an anniversary dinner and it would be good to surprise them…..so glad we went, carvery Sunday dinner and the quality was excellent and superb value for money too! Must mention the waitress who was in on the surprise, she played her part well and kept us informed with my in-laws arrival, they loved the surprise!

Amazing Sunday carvery. One 9d the best we've been to. Lovely fresh vegetables and plenty if choice. Great value too. The cheesecakes for dessert were absolutely delicious and such a large portion too - it's our new favourite place to go!

I have never left a negative review before now. My partner and I visited here for a meal today and our booking was at 6:45pm. Due to taking the wrong turn on our way here, we arrived at the restaurant at 6:48pm. We waited to be seated as instructed by a sign in the reception area and were waiting there until 6:54pm (after ringing the bell twice as instructed by another sign). The barman asked our name and made a remark about how we were late, to which we apologised and mentioned that we had been waiting a few minutes in the reception (we received no response). We were then shown to the restaurant area, where only two other tables had people sitting at them (we expected the restaurant to be very busy as the barman had given the impression our three-minute lateness was a very big inconvenience). We were served by two lovely waitresses - whose service was pleasant and the opposite of the barman’s. The menu stated we should look at the Specials board for desserts, so as we were considering whether to get one, I walked towards the reception area to find the board. I couldn’t see this, so began walking back towards our table, to see the barman in front of me in the doorway, asking where I was going in a rude tone. I explained, to which he said they did not have a specials board, then he stated that the sweet menu would be on a separate menu. I presume he is the manager of the hotel. I understand that COVID has presented a huge challenge for businesses and that he probably will have been stressed, but that is no reason to provide customer service so poor that the customer feels unwelcome. Would have been a 1 star review if it weren’t for the lovely waitresses, who were the upside of our poor experience there.

Stayed for one night over the weekend. The hotel is in a lovely position, set in stunning countryside with amazing views. Gardens were nice. Friendly and quick check-in. The hotel is a little tired and could do with some TLC but it was more than adequate for one night. Stayed in room 3 which wasn't massive but was quiet, peaceful and had a nice comfy bed - I had a great night's sleep. Breakfast was amazing - really good quality food, perfectly cooked and even though the hotel itself was fully booked, there was still plenty of space between tables in the dining area. I thought the place was really decent and excellent value for money.

Whilst staying at the hotel we booked a table for the Thursday offer, 2 courses for £9.50 for 3 for £11 - amazing value! We had a drink in the bar beforehand, not a great deal of choice and the real ale I ordered was off and the gin my colleague ordered was served without ice! Views are pleasant overlooking the gardens Not a great deal of choice on the menu but food tasted OK and service was fine. Very good in terms of value.

This was a visit for all the family and we took advantage of the early bird option. Value is where the positives end. The food was very average to put it kindly. Most of the food was just over cooked to the point of barely being edible and definitely not enjoyable. Service was ok but the gents facilities were appalling. It was a wet day and there was a leak in the roof which was dripping onto the floor. This was reported and the result was a warning. It was actually not possible to wash your hands without getting dropped on from above. Really the toilets should have been closed! We had heard good reports of the place but I won’t be returning any time soon.

The food quality is excellent and all home cooked. On out first night (Thursday) the food was lovely and fresh on the following day it was reheat from the night before however still fresh and very tasty and at £10 for three courses how can you complain!!! This was our first hotel visit with our dogs and we had no idea what to expect. I must say we were very impressed and will be making a return visit

We recently had a meal at the Craggs, we have been to the Sunday night carvery many times amd that is reasonable value for whay it is. We decided to try the restaurant recently, we are very sorry that we did ! For starters we had mushrooms with garlic mayo and the other dish was calamari with garlic mayo. Both where machine breaded and battered respectively so where heated and served from frozen. The mushrooms where ok, the calamari slightly chewy. For main course we had "steak pie and chips" and "surf and turf with chips" The steak pie tasted very nice, the steak very tender and the pie was very flavoursome, it was however covered in gravy and ALL of the pastry was soggy, this was not due to the gravy it was due to microwave reheating. I say this confidently because a plated pie, with gravy poured on top then taken to the customer would still retain some crispiness, this had none, also the "tellatle" for me was the "bellying" in the pies sidewall, typical of microwave reheating. The chips where a disgrace! Dictionary definition of chips: "a long rectangular piece of deep-fried potato." that is fried FRIED! So they should be crispy! Where these microwaved too? I suspect they where! The peas where also a joke..Garden peas..two mins in a pan..real simple. Alas not, some where all dried up and like bullets The surf and turf was not any better, we where not asked how we would like the steak component cooked but we eventually ordered that medium rare, it arrived medium well, the surf part, breaded scampi did not taste as expected and was slightly tainted/bitter and the plate itself was swimming in grease. The chips here where also disgusting, not crispy and resembling chips by shape only. We where brought the dessert menu, I opted for a white coffee, quite frankly I did not want to chance anymore food and I felt there is little that could go wrong with a white coffee. How wrong was I, my black coffee duly arrived and I requested some milk to go with it as I had ordered white coffee, the waiter told me I ordered black when I have never ever drank black coffee in my life!! Even my partner heard me order white coffee. My partner ordered a drink and some fudge cake, not very nice with squirty cream. She left most of it. We drank our coffees, paid and left. We did not complain for 2 reasons, 1. It was a celebration day. 2. The waiter/proprietor had already demonstrated how that would go...over coffee We have however been to their carvery before now and we can and will recommend that here, good value and fresh veg. I just hope that the restaurant experience we had above is a one off big mistake.

Went here on a Thursday tea time for the early bird specials with my daughter in law. Very good value for money. I had the chicken dippers with garlic mayo, she had the soup for starters we both had the beef carvery for our main meal, for pudding I had choc fudge cake she had the strawberry gateaux. All the meals were really nice and at £10 for 3 courses you can’t go wrong. Will definitely be going again. All the staff we encountered were friendly and helpful.

Visited for Sunday lunch August bank holiday. telephoned to book table but informed by cheerful lady no need as only two of us.on arrival however we had acquired additional person!! Male staff member met us at restaurant area , very grumpy advising us how busy they were and it would be over half hour wait for food , no problems. This was our first visit in a long time so not familiar with routine for carvery we sat with drinks then called well within time initially stated, we were greeted with "what do you want" we asked what choices were there again " to be advised that menus were on tables in lounge telling us what was available , our son said politely "so we have to remember before we sit down" and we all just stated beef for main. Food itself could not be faulted, hot and plenty of beef. We asked do we just help ourselves to veg as no one has explained the carvery setup , told yes,!! When we checked the menus later in the lounge they were very different anyways to the menus on the bar area!! Definitely in need of customer training and skills in meet and greet of customers, maybe a little smile and thank you wouldn't go amiss. Guy serving drinks however polite and welcoming so not all bad, would return again for food quality but would be wary not to cross the male server!!! Maybe now we know the routine might be better.!!!as won't have to ask!!

The hotel is a taxi tide from the centre of Cockermouth if you wished to pop out for a drink.....but the hotel itself has a decent sized bar (could do with more of a selection of wine) but it is what it is... the food was great, (nothing fancy) but well cooked and lots of it. The grounds are worth sitting out in, on a pleasant evening with a drink - very relaxing with great views... the rest of the hotel is a little dated and needs a spruce, but saying that had a great nights sleep in a really comfy bed and the rooms were a good size... they even have a natural alarm clock, known as the resident peacock....

Lovely views from some of the windows too. We also held a church meeting there in June and a supper was laid on, but we were a bit disappointed as it was just cheese and biscuits and at £8.50 it was expensive, but that did include the hire of the room for a private function and the parking was free.

I had read some of the reviews about this hotel before I arrived. I generally take these with a pinch of salt as I wonder sometimes what people actually want. I have to say we were greated warmly by Dan the manager and taken to our room which was pleasant and warm. Believe me I am always cold so for me to say it was warm, it was warm.We explored the area so ate out the first night in Cockermouth. We returned to the hotel for drinks and sat in the bar area. The bed was extremely comfortable and we slept soundly.Breakfast was a delight and plentiful. On our return we ate at the hotel. The food was fabulous and so much of it! I was unable to finish my meal. The prices are very reasonable. All the staff are lovely and friendly. If I had to find a fault it would have to be that the bathroom was cold but that is being really picky. Would I return? Yes I would and wouldn't hesitate to. So ignore all the picky fault finding people out there. They would find fault in a 6* establishment.

After much consideration we booked a dinner for an elderly relatives birthday at Broughton Craggs. We preordered from the menu as asked as we were a moderately large party. On arriving I was met by a very surly gentleman whos response to my hello was to turn his back on me. When we were seated, in a cold featureless room which seemed to be shut down for the winter our food started to arrive. Unfortunately by the time the last person had been served the first had finished! The food itself was mediocre but I have to say the attitude of the staff was terrible. Unfriendly and quite rude. I could understand to a point if they had been ran off their feet but we were the only ones there! We will certainly not be going back and will not recommend to any one.

Drove 200 miles to visit relatives in the area and as we were staying in the village so thought we would give it a try. First suprise was we were told at 7.40 that we were too late for dinner. When I complained someone went to speak to the chef who reluctantly decided to feed us. Big mistake! Daughter ordered scampi and I went for the Cumberland sausage which is of course a local delicacy very thick and served in one piece. What arrived were 4 invividual sausages that I assume from the look of them had been reheated from breakfast! Very poor quality as well. I am sure there are several local butchers who could supply the real thing. This was accompanied by soggy chips and limp green beans. In fairness scampi was ok but all in all a very disappointing meal which mentioned to the waiter. We will head into cockermouth in future.

Booked for the Sunday Carvery this lunchtime and we found the overall dining experience disappointing. The roast beef appeared to have been machine sliced and the Yorkshire puddings were hard and probably bought in.There was a good selection of vegetables and the roast potatoes were very tasty. Plenty of gravy as a bonus. We ordered sweets and whilst mine was very good the other two left much to be desired! The chocolate brownie portion was minute and the chocolate pudding was the worst sweet my husband had ever tasted. It came in a wine glass and was sloppy to say the least and the presentation deserves nil points! The description on the menu is very misleading. The decor is tired looking and is more than ready for a refurb!

We had a chicken jalfrezi and a chicken tikka. Both were delicious and plentiful although the tikka was a bit too creamy for my taste, however that's down to personal preference. The menu is varied and reasonably priced. The restaurant is very nicely decorated with candles on the tables, background music is pleasant and at a volume that does not impede conversation. There is a very smart and comfortable bar and lounge to enjoy an after dinner tipple or coffee. The staff are helpful and attentive without being intrusive. A very enjoyable meal all round.

Before I start into this place, the food was very good and very reasonably priced, so no fault can be put there. However, the staff left a lot to be desired. The only waiter taking orders and seating people was very brisk and left us behind whilst seating us, refusing to wait for our disabled elderly relative. Then, despite a full page in the menu announcing their dedication to helping with food intolerances and allergies, when asked about the presence of onions in a starter, the reply was "I don't know, probably" and no offer of checking with the chef. This set the mood for the remainder of the meal. Staff were very difficult to attract the attention of and were very disinterested when delivering the meals.Drinks could not be ordered from the table, so you had to go to the small bar for all drinks, where everyone else was waiting to be seated. Finally, as we were finishing our mains, two fire doors were opened letting in a very cold draft. We asked if these could be closed and were told they were open as the food trays were being emptied. No apology was offered and we were essentially told to shut up and deal. On closer inspection, the second door went out into the garden and no one was using it! We were sat there shivering for no reason. All in all, the staff, their attitudes and the lack of attention to the smaller details really let down what could have been a lovely Sunday lunch.

I visited with our pub quiz team and so did not have a meal. We did have sandwiches and chips and they were fresh and delicious. However, on asking for ice in my drink at nine pm on a Thursday night, I was told that they did not have any! A hotel of this calibre with no ice?!!!!!! There was no explanation and the young man was very offhand. When I asked why, he was even more dismissive and told me that they had run out. No apology at all. The hotel was not busy and the barman could easily have made an effort to get some. I cannot believe that a place of this size does not have an ice machine or a supply of bags of ice. Pathetic! The room was lovely and the refreshments looked nice but I was unimpressed by the barman later wandering twice past the food with a mop and bucket. Not exactly high class! Perhaps some staff training is needed?

Staying at the hotel overnight, we'd half expected the usual high prices that sometimes are part of staying in a country hotel. At first glance, if Broughton Craggs will forgive me for saying so, the rather staidly presented menu in our room didn't particularly burst with culinary excitement, but we were tempted by both the price and varied selection of dishes on offer and opted for dinner in the restaurant. So glad we did. When our food arrived it was clear the menu completely undersells the food on offer. The mixed grill could have fed two people, but more importantly, was perfectly cooked. Breakfast the following day was just as tasty and satisfying. Excellent value for tasty, well cooked food.

I ate here very recently s part of a family group/get together. It was a Sunday and unfortunately unless you wanted a roast or pie you were out of luck as far as choice was concerned! We had three courses...I started with the 'chefs soup of the day' which was by all accounts grotty! It had the consistency and taste of catering packet mix and I left most of it which is very unlike me.The roast beef was plentiful and the best part of the meal by far - however the Yorkshires were not home made and the lumpy and gloupy consistency of the mash was nasty - as was the tasteless wall paper paste stuffing! The rest of the vege, although plentiful was just boiled to within an inch of its life with no imagination in its cooking whatsoever. It really is a 'stuff your face and fill your plate kind of meal with about as much etiquette as a school dinner hall.Puddings were bought in - my son had the 'special' - trifle. Whoever had the cheek to put it in a bowl and serve it to a paying customer should really never be left alone in a kitchen! tinned fruit with some trifle sponge crudely thrown on top custard and cream just thrown on - shameful! My son just looked at it disgusted and had I not been at a family gathering would have had quite a lot to say but decided to spare my loved ones the embarrassment! As for the decor - a dated throw back to the early 80's best describes with no ambiance whatsoever. Not a remotely enjoyable experience in any way shape or formSo... if you have even a glimpse of sophistication in your palette - I would avoid this one. A shame, as its a nice building that could be so much more with a little effort and taste.

Have just been to Broughton Craggs for the Sunday carvery, well what is supposed to be a carvery. To begin we were seated in what seemed to be the residents dinning area which was ok but everyone even those who came in after us were all placed in the main dinning area. When asking one of the waiters, "Do we go and help ourselves to the carvery?" he replied, "eventually," in a sarcastic manner. He then told us the slices of meat would be brought to us, pre-sliced and then we could choose or veg. Now, any time I have been to a carvery previously you get to select your choice of meat, the meat being straight from the cut by a server. your choice was not limited to one selection. When going to choose our veg a waitress dressed differently from all others so presumably of higher standing proceeded to cut straight in front of my partner not even acknowledging his presence so she cut fill up the overcooked veg. He had to stand and wait with his plate and meat going cold and still no acknowledgement or manners of excuse me or explanation. The meat of choice was lamb and it was overcooked and little of it. When asking a waitress about pricing she was unsure about everything. A carvery as is known to most is a 2 course eat what you want event which holds a set price. This was not the case. I feel disappointed with the food and lack of manners of certain staff. Would not recommend at all.

What a lovely restaurant with fabulous food and great staff. We were staying close by and had seen great reviews about the restaurant so we had to try it….not just once but two nights in a row it was that good. On the first night my husband had lamb shoulder which was cooked to perfection and fell off the bone, I had salmon and prawns which were equally as good. The second night it was seafood platter for my husband and sweet and sour chicken for me. Both meals were very good and it was great to have so much to choose from. It was a pleasant change to be able to choose the accompaniment to the meals rather than just chips with salad or veg. The staff were very attentive and polite. All in all it was a great experience and would definitely recommend this restaurant.

The restaurant is part of Lodore Falls Hotel and Spa. The breakfast, is poor quality ingredients which are largely tasteless. The milk jug was dirty, the staff seemed miserable (expect for two chaps who were welcoming and happy). All in all, very poor and I won’t be back.
