So the Rad group have refurbished the old Costley Hotel and basically that means all soft furnishings have been with plastic greenery. Tablecloths are no more and the whole interior has lost its previous charm. Was so disappointed visiting for the first time after a while particularly as it was for my birthday. We were in a constant on and off draft from the kitchen- so freezing most of evening till we moved to the bar area to finish our drinks. My husband ordered the roast beef dinner which arrived without the advertised Yorkshire pudding. He returned it so I ended up eating alone while he waited for his to return. Apologies from the chef but we noticed other plates coming out without yorkshires! No one else seemed to have noticed! Sorry Rad group but you’ll need to improve the ambience to tempt us back. A real shame as it’s walkable for us.

Was celebtating a special birthday with friends but really disappointed in the quality of afternoon tea. Sandwiches were basic and a limited selection of fillings. The cakes appeared to be shop bought and not freshly baked. Expected much better from an establishment like this. Service from waiting staff was good.

With the 'stunning' refurbishment, the change of owner and mostly, the promise of a 'new menu, showcasing Scottish cuisine', I was excited to try out the revamped fare which would presumably be a game changer; especially required in light of the innovative additions to the local restaurant scene. The worn paper sheet menu should have been an indicator to the level of quality to come. Sad to say, the 'new' menu was pretty much the same old menu that had been on the go from the 90's. Nothing inventive, exciting or intriguing; just pub grub really. Fish and chips, roast chicken/salmon, pies, chicken liver pate, lasagne etc. Relics of an era when gastro-pubs were ubiquitous. Given the plethora of great Scottish brewers available, the dull selection of beers was a huge disappointment too. For a non-meat eater, the selection was a pie, mac/cheese and the stunningly unappealing cauliflower 'steak'. Opted for the pasta and what a disappointment. Small portion of macaroni, two very crunchy pieces of garlic bread and as if that wasn't enough carbs, a portion of fries. Appallingly, was actually FROZEN chips. Pleasant enough cheese sauce but overall, stunningly average and overpriced. For fifty quid for two portions of macaroni cheese and one drink each, you probably won't get Michelin star quality....but you certainly expect better than something that wouldn't even make the Tesco finest range. Really poor overall.

We spent our evening at the Brig O Doon on Hogmanay and was pleasantly surprised by the outstanding service and quality of food. The staff went out their way to ensure that everyone was looked after even though the restaurant was busy and a large function on. The food was lovely, great flavours and was delivered at great times to allow us to enjoy the evening. We then retreated to the bar to bring in the bells and the staff were great at looking after us, Joe in the bar was fantastic, he was always willing to go check the other bars for more drink, really appreciated the effort that they all made. We very much look forward to visiting again after the refurb works and enjoying the great atmosphere.

The Brig O’Doon hotel used to be one of the places we would visit once or twice a year. We hadn’t been for about 15 years, so we were really looking forward to going back. More so now that it has had a change in ownership as we are RAD card holders and regularly use their Hotels. Our visit didn’t get off to the best of starts as we struggled to get parked next to the Hotel. Unfortunately it’s an age old problem for the Hotel as the parking is very limited near hand. We had to park at the Burns Centre which is about 500m away. When we did arrive at the Hotel we were very impressed with the way it had been decorated for Christmas, it was very impressive. What was equally impressive was the meals we had, absolutely no complaints from the four of us. The bill was decent as well, £108 for a drink and two courses each. We found the staff to be very friendly and helpful as well. All in all, we had a very enjoyable meal in beautiful surroundings. A really nice way to spend a Saturday afternoon. I’ll finish off with a wee bit of feedback to the Rad Group if I can. I’ve already mentioned we are Rad card holders and when we use the other Hotels in the Group some of the staff mention to us if we are Rad card holders when paying the bill. My wife had to phone up the next day to collect her points, she completely forgot about her card. If the staff would mention this to people when they’re squaring up, it could maybe encourage diners to take out cards, especially with the growing number of Hotels the Rad Group have in the area. Surely an easy way to promote the business 🤷‍♂️

Disappointing. Our table was booked for 1pm but it was 2pm before any orders were taken and then there was another long wait between starters and main courses which meant one of our party had to leave before dessert as she had another appointment. When the food for the main course came ,although very tasty, it was not red hot and one of our party sent hers back as her roast chicken was cold by the time she was given it. There were not enough waiting staff to cope with the number of diners at this busy time of year but it must have been the fault of the kitchen turning out lukewarm food. Also the attitude of our waitress could have been a bit more pleasant . Would definitely think twice about booking for another outing with friends

Lovely local venue, but. Service was terrible, food was ok apart from the pork dish which was inedible, No one even asked how the food was. Was not given the specials menu, so did not know they had one until given a copy to choose sweet. Third choice on the wine before they had any in stock. We had booked and arrived for 5.30 since we had a young child in our party. Service was so slow, we left at 8.45.

Please read the following with a big pinch of salt! It's more about our love of Burns combined with not reading the small print! We had a lovely night, although I still think the hotel interior design could be much more Scottish than it is. Wee sleekit cowrin, tim’rous beasties O whit a panic was in oor breasties When we dined oot one night at the Brig O Doon The most romantic, historical, gaff in toon And not just any hotel, no ane wi a brig Where a man oan a horse got chased by a witch Who pu’d aff the mares tail But Tam still got away And lived tae get fu another day But to our tale ane autumn nicht That left us wi an awfy fricht It all began guid, we were on to a winner When we spotted a sign: "£17.95 for a 2 course dinner” Alas, after a main and a tasty wee cake We discovered the sign was a big fat fake! When along came our bill But to our awfu dismay £17.95 turned into a whole weeks pay! On beckoning the server to tell of our pain She informed us the deal was only a “starter & main "It tells you right there in font of tiny size" I think they were trying to pull the wool Over oor half fu mince pies! Apart fae the food fricht The room a delight And the staff made sure We had a lovely wee night So take this tale wi a pinch o salt Or even better, a wee dram of malt Now, wha this tale o' truth shall read, Ilk man and mother's son, take heed, If yer goin tae the Brig For a weekday feed A lottery win or a bank loan you will need So, the moral of the story is If you don't want to leave Drouthy, raging and skint Make sure ye aye Read the small print!

A wonderful old Inn situated in Alloway , just south of Ayr, it overlooks the famous ‘Brig o Doon’ The decor is very tasteful, the restaurant is spacious and well laid out. From the minute you pick up the menu an excitement rises, a good selection of starters, mains and desserts, plus the daily specials, all at very reasonable prices. The staff were polite and very efficient, the food when it arrived in just a few short minutes was a delight, not only in taste, but also in presentation. The only downside to a wonderful experience is that there is no car park !

We hadn't stayed here since it was taken over from the Costleys and firstly I'd say that the room was nice and dinner was great. However our breakfast experience tarnished our stay. Firstly the buffet table......a sad state of affairs. For a 4 star hotel this wasn't even worthy of a Travel Lodge. Packets of croissants in abundance, no freshly baked pastries which you would expect from a quality establishment. Packets of cereal lying in a tired basket, tubs of yoghurt and small bowls of unappealing fruit. The bread was cheap with no choice other than white or brown. And to top it off there were small packets of butter and jugs of warm fresh orange and cranberry. You expect this layout from a Premier Inn but even they do it infinitely better. I'm not buying the excuse that they only have 5 rooms and so it's not cost effective to have fresh pastries, big bowls of fresh fruit and natural yoghurt, fruit compote etc. I've stayed in small hotels with the same amount of rooms and the buffet station is miles better than this poor excuse for one. On to the cooked breakfast......cheap ingredients, disgusting beans, raw fried eggs and a potatoe scone that looked to have been microwaved and not fried!!!! The coffee was weak, cheap filtered rubbish. And a pet hate of mine...packets of brown and red sauce. Is it really that difficult to have bottles of sauce on the table? Our complaint was met with concerned faces but I had to telephone later in the day to seek an outcome. The manager I spoke to had no clue of the complaint and was apologetic but added that they had never had any complaints about the breakfast. Really??? I had to fight tooth and nail to have our breakfast refunded and my complaint that it tarnished our stay fell on deaf ears. Indeed, when I explained this was a treat that had cost us a lot of money she flippantly said "well, it was an Itison deal you had sir." We will never be back and have informed all our friends and family of the drop in standards since the change of owners.

I live locally and stopped going to the restaurant here some years ago because the food had become disappointing. We visited again because we heard it had been taken over by the company that runs a lochside hotel and spa, somewhere we have visited for food and enjoyed on every occasion. We assumed perhaps that the same team of chefs may be cooking and therefore would have improved. However, the menu was the same if not very similar and the quality of the Haggis bon bon starter for £10.50 was very poor. My partner enjoyed her Main but I didnt. Maybe the same chef is running the kitchen,im not sure but seemed the same as we remembered from the past. It may be that they are in the process of improving and will take time. We will perhaos try again in. In the summer or just go to Lochside.

I have only ever been to Brig A Doon over the years for very special occasions so I thought I would try a lunch during Eat out for Help Out. I am trying to get to different restaurants during August to check out food quality, service and also how each is adapting to all the new healthy protocols. Of all the places I have visited since the beginning of August the Brig O Doon is my favourite by a country mile. The food was fresh, tasty and cooked to perfection. You can tell that the chefs have extremely high standards just through the food presentation and freshness of it. I had the French Toast with bacon and Brie as a starter and it was amazing. The main course I had Steak, Sausage and Ale pie and wow this is how steak pie should be. Take me back to the good old days of pies encased in a delicious pastry, this was it. The creamed potatoes and butter carrots were perfect company. For sweet I had the sticky toffee pudding with the vanilla ice cream and again this dish was perfect in every way. The service was absolutely incredible with our waitress very helpful, friendly and efficient, a real credit to the Brig O Doon! Value for money was very good. I am more than happy to pay a bit more for better quality and this was certainly the best meal I have had out in Ayrshire in many a year. Would highly recommend a visit whether that be for breakfast, elevensies, lunch or dinner. I am confident that the standard across all these options will be just as good. Visibly one of the better establishments we’ve dined in, both inside and out. Staff were friendly and accommodating, even if it did take sometime to ‘get under starters orders’ and the under cooked steak. Definitely geared up for the tourists visiting the nearby Robert Burns museum and wee hoose (just down the road) as reflected in the prices (not overly expensive at first sight, but on reflection too expensive for what we got. Lots on offer from the usual selection of an upscale pub/restaurant. I was tempted by the monkfish and king prawn Goan curry, but decided on something else. We had bread/butter and olives as an appetiser, the olives were excellent. Starters of Cullen Skink were OK but lacked the smoked fish flavour. Two Sirlion steaks one with chips the other with mash were also OK, but I’ve had much better for £24!Bottles of Malbec (£26.50)& Zinfandel (£18.95)along with a vodka and coke and Bacardi and coke helped to wag it all down over the 2 1/2 hours. At £123 for a couple isn’t too bad, but I still come back to my original point that this place is more about the visual impact rather than the culinary one. Disappointing as if the latter was anywhere near the former then this establishment would figure highly on the Scotland restaurant map.

Our family enjoyed an excellent meal here yesterday. Our food was delicious! It was fresh and very tasty, with the portions were a good size. It was difficult to pick just one thing from the main course menu as it all sounded appealing! Our meals were reasonably priced too. We would definitely come back!

Having been disappointed not to be able to get a table for dinner the previous evening (our fault for not booking!) we visited for lunch as we headed back home. From the friendly welcome at reception to the moment we left we could not have asked for better. The steak which our son ordered was cooked perfectly and ‘melted in the mouth’. My wife and I both ordered salmon dishes - there was a wide ranging menu - and both were absolutely delicious. An excellent range of choices were available from the A La carte lunch menu and a specials menu. You could have eaten from either/both ranging from light bites and sandwiches through to a full meal. You should really have a dessert when here. The dessert menu is a ‘Yes to all!’ menu. The chocolate mousse torte was exceptional. There was a wedding reception when we were there and this did not interfere with the restaurant at all. If anything it added to the experience with a piper playing at the entrance. A beautiful hotel in a beautiful setting.

Attended a wedding here the other day and what a wonderful venue it was. So pretty from the front and gorgeous gardens at the back all extremely well maintained. The service throughout the meal and after was excellent with all the staff friendly and approachable. Food was delicious and served efficiently. Only downside was that it was a really hot day and the room where everything took place was extremely hot. It would have been a more comfortable experience with air con. All in all though really impressed with this hotel.

We ate here having spent the day around the Robert Burns museum, gardens and house. We understand this is part of a small chain and the standards were really high. I am a diagnosed coeliac and the gluten free offering here was excellent, as indeed was the attitude of the staff, the atmosphere in the hotel and the food itself. The only slight negative is a lack of car parking, you need to park about a 5 minute walk away, which we didn't find a problem.

Had a very nice family lunch in here, very attractive inside and out.Rabbie Burns paraphernalia all over the place of course, very interesting.Celeriac soup, fish and meats platters were excellent, good bread.Haggis was a bit too heavy and soft in texture for our tastes.I couldn't choose.Great pudding menu! Bread and butter pudding was nicely presented but not really what I expected - it's supposed to be baked with cream and nutmeg but this was served as a square of pudding with custard all round it.I wish chefs would stick with the traditional recipes which are so much better! I make a lot of traditional pudding recipes at home and there's no excuse not to serve what Britain excels in (or used to) - great desserts.Ditch the fancy French influences and stick with the real version and I think people will flock from miles around.

Please be warned that there is a distinct lack of parking at this location so it is best to drop passengers off and look for a nearby(ish) parking spot, either at the Church next door or at the Robert Burns Museum which is approximately 400 yards away. All the surrounding streets have Double Yellow lines. That is the only downside to this wonderful location (apart from a minor complaint of the mis-spelling of 'lasses' in the Tam O'Shanter quote on the ceiling!) so do not let this put you off visiting. Having previously enjoyed the luxury of Costley Hotels at one of the sister Hotels (Lochgreen House) I was really looking forward to our lunch here and it did not disappoint. Upon arrival we were shown to our table by a very professional waiter and we did not wait for the very attentive Anne Marie to provide us with the Menus. She also gave us a comprehensive rundown of the Chef's Recommendations and took our drinks order, which arrived a short time later. After a brief period which gave us time to peruse the menus she returned and took our starter and main order which, the starter arrived after a short and very acceptable wait. We all agreed the starters were excellent, especially the Soda Scone with Bacon, Brie and Red Onions, which, although heavy for a starter, was absolutely delicious.Mains arrived after and ideal period which allowed our earlier course to settle and was again, everything was top notch. I had the Halibut with fresh Pasta and Langoustine Sauce, vegetables were included with the dish and the Asparagus and Broccoli were cooked to perfection. The whole dis exceeded my expectations and compliments must certainly go the the chef! The Haggis dish and the Battered Haddock and Chips were very much enjoyed by the others. The sticky Toffee Pudding was enjoyed by my wife and her aunt but I greedily took Anne Marie's (and Chef's) recommendation and had the Peanut Butter, White Chocolate and Jelly Sundae and it was to die for. The Peanut butter was excellent but I would recommend asking the amount to be reduced to prevent any waste. With a glass of wine each for the ladies and a Ginger Beer and Lime for me, the bill came to a very reasonable £25/head, which, in my opinion was tremendous value for money and we will certainly return soon. Once again, special mention for Anne Marie, who was very attentive and provided and excellent but unobtrusive service, Well Done!

Visiting my in laws for a few days in Ayr and we always like to grab a coffee or a meal at Brig a Doon. Love the place normally. Arrived at the coffee shop at 11.55 and because of lack of staff missed the 12pm deadline for a bacon roll and NO flexibility on that. One (what looked like a new member of the serving team) left alone to take orders, serve, take payments and clear until my husband pointed this out at reception (nearly got short shrift). Took 40 minutes to get our coffee orders!!! If you’re going to run an effective service, make sure you have enough team members - they needed at least 3 people when it’s busy! This shouldn’t happen! Will be back because we do love the place but hope to have a better experience next time.

Popped in to this little quaint hotel for coffee & breakfast this morning and as always was not disappointed. Bacon roll delivered by lovely staff who clearly were having a busy morning but taking it all in their stride - always smiling and delivering professionally. The only thing that marred our morning was a customer at the next table, who could only complain ALL the time! If it wasn't about his cake not being served with his coffee at the same time, it was going on about not having a menu after 12noon (although we did hear the Manager telling his wife that the morning menu changed at 12noon to a lunch menu when she was asked at the bar). It's people like this who should really understand that staff are their to help and clearly doing their best and not there to be berated simply because they didn't have their cake and coffee at the exact same time. Well done to all the staff - always professional from the minute you walk in! Thank you.

My husband and I have had 'foodie' friends staying for the weekend from Surrey and we have spent the weekend literally showing off Costley and Costley venues. Having dined in The Witchery at Brig o Doon and Ellisland I feel I need to write a review and share our experience. All too often people use this site to complain and not to compliment. We were so proud to take our friends out fine dining in Ayr and they have left very envious of the choice we sometimes take for granted in the first classCostley and Costley venues. Our friends were particularly impressed with the service and quality of food on our doorstep. Although primarily young staff there always seems to be a mature steadying influence. This was noticed by our friends while dining at Ellisland where we were greeted and shown to our table by a mature 'dapper' gentleman. Though the restaurant was very busy he still managed to take the time (while taking our order/bringing drinks, keeping a watchful eye on the dining room) to ask about our day and make us feel special. Our friends were very impressed and we had a lovely weekend. Thank you C&C for continually keeping the bar raised with regard to fine dining in Ayrshire.

We live in Ayr and enjoy the excellent cuisine at many good local restaurants. Costley hotels and restaurants are well known for excellent quality food and service, so it was a great disappointment when we had my wife’s recent birthday dinner at Brig O Doon. My wife had the lamb and I had lambs liver for the main course. Neither of us were asked how we would like the food cooked. When the food arrived, both dishes were very salty and my lambs liver was like leather.I should have complained but didn’t want to spoil my wife’s evening any more, so I said nothing. It is unlikely that we will return as there are many other restaurants in the area that are consistently excellent.

My husband and I dined here recently and have to say, what a beautiful setting! We live in London and had obviously heard so much about the history of Alloway and Robert Burns, we felt The Brig o Doon was the place to dine for its romantic location and good reviews (and also recommended by some friends who had visited previously). A very warm welcome was received by a friendly lady with dark hair and we were shown to our table. The restaurant staff were really friendly and welcoming. Food and drink all reasonably priced and the monkfish curry is to die for. But the night was pretty much ruined by an older gentleman in a suit who was walking around, muttering loudly (a lot) whilst also shouting and swearing at the staff, quite audibly for all customers to hear in the bar area. It would have been comical if it also wasn’t for the fact you can see this individual was nothing short of being a bully only resulting in some of the staff flustering – not their fault at all, they still delivered excellent service. When we were leaving. we could still hear him going on in the background, this time shouting to the receptionist about some guests not being allowed to come in for drinks! Seemed a bit strange for a hotel to want to turn customers away. We would have thought you’d be welcoming every piece of business. There was one younger, tall, gentleman in particular, in a grey checked suit who was calm, collected and very professional the whole time. We can only imagine he was the restaurant manager. A real credit to the hotel with excellent customer care skills. My husband and I own a successful business in London so we are well versed on how to run our own business but most importantly, how to treat our staff which naturally then provides a good atmosphere for customers. But this man, sadly, ruined what was meant to be a romantic meal with his arrogance and complete disregard for the atmosphere and surroundings in this otherwise lovely little candlelit restaurant. We were planning on visiting again, but to be honest, only if we can be guaranteed that this individual is not there, because he really did make the visit memorable, but sadly, for the wrong reasons. In either case, good luck to the staff. They need it……I did try to post this review a couple of days ago so apologies if it’s duplicated

Visited recently for an anniversary dinner with my wife. We have been regular diners at the Brig o Doon for over 30 years but must say the quality of the food was very poor on this occasion. It started off so well but when it came to our main meals we both received such a disappointment ! Both of us had main meals that were SO salty quite frankly they were not worthy of being served up at this restaurant. My wife ordered the thyme chicken but she said it was totally overwhelmed by the salty flavour - there was no trace of thyme ! My duck I had hoped would be moist and tender - instead it tasted of something more like tough slices of ham soaked in brine ! We should have sent them both back but decided to soldier on - but wish we hadn’t ! We mentioned this to the serving staff who were so apologetic and would report our comments to the chef. On paying our bill the receptionist took our details and also stated she would mention our experience to the chef again but i very much doubt we will hear any more. Such a shame our evening was spoiled by such poor quality food considering it is usually superb ! Will we return?.... I suppose we will but think we will give the Brig o Doon a good break and dine elsewhere for a while.

I challenge anyone to find anywhere in Ayrshire that exudes luxury as much as the brig o doon. Part of the costly and costly group it automatically ensures quality , however the brig o doon goes a step beyond .Wether you want a cool luxurious cosily dark indoor seat or a bright conservatory seat or indeed an outdoor table in the splendorous riverside garden then your well catered for , not living too far away from here I have never hired a room to stay over night so I can’t comment on that but for food , snacks, coffee etc you really need to make the brig o doon part of your visit to Ayr .

Usually eat here and never had an issue. Today we called and waiting 15 minutes and not served. Approached the counter and older lady said it was table service and take a seat. (We knew this but had waited). Sat back down and waited nearly another 15 minutes and nobody took our order. We were walked past several times by staff and ignored. Left and went elsewhere. Really disappointed at being made to feel so embarrassed after others noticed clearly and those arriving after us were served. Will sadly not return as left to feel like we were deliberately being ignored. Completely embarrassing experience.
