I used to love the Brewery for gigs but since the bar inside the Malt room has gone it's become impossible to get a drink. The bar situation is dire. We ended up walking out the gig and going to a pub down the road to get a drink after queuing for 45 mins. It's a shame as the venue is great. Won't be back until something changes

Went to a gig at Brewery a couple of weeks back. I have been a regular at this place over the years and always enjoyed it. What has completely spoiled the experience of going here for me is the fact that they have removed the bar in the main room, meaning gig goers have to queue outside or upstairs for aaages to get a drink and miss the show. I noticed that there was hardly any staff on either bar, (something like 3 upstairs and 2 downstairs) they were rushed off their feet and looked stressed, but there seemed to be loads of front of house and security staff milling about looking chilled. They also had 2 events on plus the bar/restaurant. I don’t think the venue can really cope with this, it was heaving, and I even had to queue for the toilet at one point. The price of drinks was excessive for the service received, costing me £25 for 2 double spirits, mixer and a lemonade. Especially when it’s chucked in a plastic cup (I get the safety aspect) no ice or lemon/lime (basically warm) or flair for what you pay and the mixer is hardly topped up. I got 2 drinks/rounds, and was going to get more but when I saw the queue I didn’t bother, plus I’d already spent £40 on 2 rounds! Some of my favourite acts often play here and the atmosphere is always great but I’m going to reconsider next time as the bar experience ruins it really. Especially since the cost of living increase tickets that used to cost £10-15 are now £20-25.

A really lovely local venue. It has a small but perfectly formed theatre that attracts some decent acts, especially for comedy, and cinema screens. There are also art and craft workshops and a bar and restaurant. You couldn't ask for more from a local arts venue.

This used to be my favourite music venue, but things have taken a turn for the worse. The bar has gone from the Malt Room, which wouldn't be an issue if the foyer bar was manned better. Cumbria has a number of excellent breweries, but the Brewery were only offering Blonde or Light beers in the foyer, with no bitter or stout. Tried the bar upstairs later (is it still the Vats Bar?), where there was a single bitter available on hand-pump. But I was shocked to see that this bar has been refurbished and the soul ripped out of it. Decor and atmosphere were sterile, which might account for it being the emptiest I've ever seen it. As for the concert, Laurence Jones, we ended up walking out as the sound mix was atrocious. Not sure if the mixing is by the artist or the venue, but the night was spoilt.

We are locals and years ago we used to go to the brewery Vats bar regularly. It was such a wonderful place, cosy and full of character with all the Vats, sofas and banquet seating. After several years away we went back for a pint today and were shocked by the empty soulless transformation in the bar, its cold and empty with no Vats anymore, cold uncomfortable chairs and far too many high tables. And the beer prices - oh my god! Extortionate! £10 for a pint of real ale and half a cider, which is ridiculous. A pub down the road was £6 for a pint and a half. We will not be going back to the bar venue.

I wish that we all visited small theatres in our towns, firstly to keep them open for all to enjoy, and secondly because there are some fantastic shows with very very talented musicians. I went to see Eddie Reader here. I booked into a hotel for the night and then took the a walk to the Brewery Arts . I thought I'll have a nice meal. So I started with a great salad then had a Mushroom Pizza. I drank red wine with the meal . The staff were very attentive and friendly. It was still early so I sat outside and had a Pint and a few cigarettes. It started to get busy but I knew were my sat was . So the concert started and Eddie Reader and the band were finally ready to blow the roof off. I needed to go to the toilet and walking back. There was a Poster of Eddie Reader and the tour guide I spoke to a member of the staff and was given the poster. I was very happy . The concert ended and I stood waiting for Eddie to come out we spoke about were she was brought up and I asked if she would sign the poster, which she did for me. Then I asked if we could have a photo together my hand was shaking but took 2 photos. She is very tall, but as I walked back to the hotel I was 10 feet tall. Great Evening.

Food is great but we arrived on £5 pizza and pasta night around 5:10pm well before 5:30 when it ends, waited 10-15 minutes for our drinks order to be taken (we were asked quickly but then requested a couple more minutes as we hadn't decided, think she forgot and another waitress who had seated us came to us when she noticed we still had nothing in front of us), weren't given any separate menu for the offer so ordered pizzas off the normal menu not knowing any different, then after eating and our plates being cleared we sat waiting for about 25 minutes waiting for any member of staff to come our way so we could ask for the bill. Were surprised to see the pizzas were full price but figured they were good and not expensive anyway so if the service had been good I'd be more happy but in particular that really long wait looking around for anyone to come anywhere near us or look our way for nearly 30 minutes spoiled the experience a bit, it wasn't busy and weren't sat completely out of the way. Think our waitress just kept forgetting about us as it was a different member of staff we got the bill from as well

Over priced and average food I ordered the smoked salmon with new potatoes and salad and sun dried tomatoes What I recieved was over cooked salmon on top of some greenery with 4 small slices of potato which squashed together would not have made 1 new potato. I have eaten here before and it was average so I should have learnt my lesson. Won't be going again. Service was not much better. Poor service - ordered two soft drinks and they took nearly as long to come as the food. Could see them being poured but they took a while to come after this, and it wasn't particularly busy. The staff were great individually, but maybe better communication needed? Pizzas were average, and way overpriced for the quality. Generously topped which meant the base was soft and doughy in places - not necessarily a bad thing, but was reminiscent of a takeaway pizza rather than a restaurant pizza costing £10. Chips looked great but were absolutely covered in salt; I had to wipe each individually to make them edible. Sorbet was delicious! No complaints here. Two stars because the ambience is nice and the venue is interesting, and despite the haphazard service I believe the staff are working hard and trying their best.

Appalling staff attitude. To challenge a customer for using the toilet before ordering a drink. Saying the customer was ill mannered for not asking permission. Then imply the customer is a liar when explaining her husband was outside with the dogs ready to order drinks as had been the case for the 3 previous days of our holiday. Told to get lost (or words to that effect) as the customer had "done what she came in for". Utterly appalling, rude and verbally aggressive. Not how someone in hospitality should behave.

We enjoyed our stay here the room was great with a large Bath Shower the shower worked well but didn't want to stop, resulting in me switching the power switch off also the extractor fans weren't working which left a lot of steam in the bathroom obviously some electrical fault but these things happen, I reported it and was offered another room but it wasn't worth it for the short stay I could switch it off after getting out of shower, I thought the breakfast was great, but thought s tea pot and hot water would have been a better choice than get your own with tea bags and machine hot water, esp with four of us, also help your self to toast rotisorsry style, but don't put the toast back in if its to lightly toasted, it gets burnt to almost cinders, I suppose there trying to Move to a self service style hope it doesn't increase past this level , we are used to service to the table thankyou . Food was Great , we also had dinner in the evening which was excellent with a good menu and choices, so all in all would definatly go again just return the tea pot and water and serve the toast in a rack a proven method and probably cheaper to run than a machine, service was good, but not great, staff pleasant and polite but need to note things, than trying to remember, no ice means no ice or scrambled egg please not a full English as said I enjoyed the stay and will return could have been perfect quite easily
