Brew House in Barnet

Lovely setting and the food is reasonably nice. But why can't we have table service like most other places in Europe. What's do great about standing in a long queue for half an hour?

The cafe's redeeming feature is its picturesque setting. However, the cooked food is overpriced and congealed under heat lamps, the cakes are dry, and the hot drinks are served in unappealing polystyrene cups. The seating area inside lacks atmosphere, furnished with cheap Formica furniture, while the outside area is more pleasant, suiting the ambiance of Kenwood House. The staff appear to be inexperienced students rather than seasoned professionals in catering. It seems the establishment's success relies solely on its location, drawing in customers despite the subpar quality it offers.

I went to Kenwood house for the first time with my partner and decided to pop in for some lunch. We had a chicken roast dinner and a slice of cake and they were both delicious. It was well worth the wait in the queue! Thank you

A beautiful environment to enjoy tea or lunch, with a wide variety of cakes. The gluten free Victoria sponge was very good (and in great demand!) It has garden seating and additional outside seating in the yard, as well as plenty of indoor seating. It is counter service rather than table service.

Such a cute spot in a hidden corner of the Heath. Good selection of drinks, yummy cakes, warm food, and children's meal. There was a big queue upon entering, but it moved quickly thanks to the batista who was making drinks at rapid speed! I can see how one or two more staff members would help the cafe run more efficiently, but that didn't take away from my experience. Good selection of seating inside and outdoors in the garden.

Food is amazing, the place is very nicely presented, but 80% of the staff are suuuper rude. Feels like I’m an inconvenience for being a customer! Very sad to see as a quick change / training of staff could make this place so great!

What’s wrong with this place. It used to be pleasant, elegant, classy and well run, now the atmosphere is totally gone. The food is bad: cheap looking and mediocre tasting yet priced at the top range. The refurbishment has taken away all the historic feel and replaced it with cheap Scandi look which doesn’t suit the place. So sad. Not sure who is in charge but all the decisions from service, to food and seating areas seem random and not thought with the spirit of the place and what people visiting Kenwood are looking for.

This place used to be so lovely. Now everything is served on disposable cups/plates etc. It’s totally unsustainable and terribly wasteful. Apparently this has all happened since Covid. It’s time to go back to a more authentic style but I wonder if they will ever bother now.

The food was unremarkable and overpriced and the Mexican Chicken Salad gave me food poisoning. Absolutely never going here again, which is a shame because it’s located in a beautiful spot. But the food poisoning was not worth it.

Poor service. 30 min queue to buy 2 cold drinks on a sunny October Sunday afternoon. Pantry service next door equally poor. Kenwood, what is wrong. Similar problems here for years. The setting is great, food and drink quality good, customers are ready to pay, but get your act together. Still afraid to bring friends even for drinks. I was looking forward to a capuccino and a nice cake from the wonderful selection in front of me. Unfortunately, cake-wise, although they have gluten-free and vegan options, not one option was both so I had to go without cake. Capuccino-wise the only options were cow and oat milk. Intolerant to both, I had to go for an espresso. For such a large cafe, you’d think they’d have a better choice for allergies. The staff were obviously aware of the lack of choice so why doesn’t management change things?

I have been coming to the Brew House for many years, watched it change and alter, along with its staff over all that time. It has been pared down to a remnant of what it used to be, no longer offering hot food options, just sandwiches, pastries, drinks (and icecream in the summer) at high prices. The sandwich selection has always been comically minimal and overpriced. However, the main loss is the warmth and connection to the visitors of Kenwood. The staff are few and they are mostly quite aggressive men who are unfriendly and strange. I was nearly assaulted when entering, ordering and taking my tray to the garden, simply because I had tripped accidentally upon entering via the seating area, which they interpreted as a sign of vulnerability. One of the male staff who may be a manager as he has been there for a few recent years also once overcharged me on purpose. Very negative experience recently, although the seating area outside is still the beautiful place it used to be, a rest and refreshment for all visitors in company and community. The cafe has lost its connection, purpose and professionalism and is a sad disappointment to its history and place.

Just a lovely place inside and out and a great selection of food sandwiches wraps salad bowls & yummy cakes all reasonably priced the garden area delightful go you won't be disappointed

Jolly nice cafe with great coffee and eats, at a price! Lovely outdoor seating good in all weathers! Don’t see the point of the expense (because you pay for it) compostable cups/plates if there are no facilities for composting 🤷‍♂️

5 years previously this cafe was a go to location for nice teas with a teapot and cups, excellent cakes and sumptuous meals attended by smartly dressed, helpful staff. Now on return it may as well be a KFC for all the lack of service, poor meals and tea in cardboard takeaway cups. The cakes are the only thing still looking good but the nice atmosphere has gone and it is no longer a treat to go there. The staff tasked with maintaining the outside eating area were totally useless and more concerned with having a joke with colleagues rather than clearing the used dishes bowl which was crowded with pigeons for the whole time we were there. EH has obviously decided to cut costs but haven't imagination to realise that this former gem of an eating place was worth preserving in it's previous style. I bet it gets few return visits.

I love to have here a coffee break. Lovely sandwiches, great cream tea. Garden is amazing! I wish to come back soon.

Let me start off by saying the food is absolutely excellent, however £23 for food for 3 people is absolutely ludicrous and practically illegal and insulting. My child even exclaimed “£23!?” and he is only 5. Please fix these prices and I will consider coming back again.

Lovely place with lots op option, can be quite busy, especially in the weekends.

If I say too much , this place will lose its special effect… So I am just saying I have been going to that place for over 20 years, it always has been a charming place in England. A place that remind you of the authentic Britain… Don't miss out!!! However , I am adding a New Review today, what used to be a wonderfull place to relax, enjoy nature has become a abandoned garden, a paradise has turned up a pigeon unattended place where seating is almost impossible because of the lack of maintenance. To the managment, I am happy to pay an extortion price for my coffee, only if you are willing to maintain your seating area... @British Heritage, please keep this place the one it used to be... it is a prime location to show your extensive hardwork across the country.. Seating on the outside terrace and here what I found...a disaster.

Thought I would try the full english breakfast after a morning walk around grounds, but watery scrambled eggs and the rest just lukewarm put on a cold plate was a first and last experience for me at that price

Used to be simple but nicely done cafe with decent coffee and reasonable prices. Has now changed into a depressing motorway canteen at egregious prices. Push button coffee machine with nasty beans, operated wrong. Packaged goods and soulless food. What used to feel like an elegant, welcoming, joyous place for the people has been lost. Or rather, destroyed. When you wish a place could at least become a Gail’s you know someone has really phoned it in. This place ought to be run by people who actually care about it, it could be truly wonderful

Arrived exactly at 16:00, 1 hr before stated closing times on English Heritage website (17:00), and 2 hrs before stated closing times on Google Maps (18:00 Sunday) - was rudely refused entry by staff. Looks like staff just randomly decides when to close and go home early. There were lots of other dissapointed customers trying to enter the cafe. Not reliable and customer friendly :(

Why is the soup never hot !!?? Even when you ask them to heat it up! The staff say that where the soup cauldron stands is a very adequate hot temperature- it is plainly not doing the job! The SOUP is still lukewarm to cold! NEVER HOT as it should be! Good also gone downhill! Except for cakes! A shame! Debra

It is disgraceful that a busy cafe such as this had no decent woman's toilet. The larger women's toilets were out of order and so women had to use the disabled toilets. There were 2 of these and one had a blocked sink with water all over the floors. This is utterly unacceptable.

A good Sunday Roast, although you may have to stand in the queue for a while. Lots of baked treats available, and kid's lunches.

Food is too expensive, used to be so nice as I remember when I was a kid and now the staff are rude unwelcoming.. eveytime I go I feel they are rude and like don’t care. Food is not good tastes like frozen food sold for much more then should be. Coffee is okay.

My parter and I love walking from Highgate to the cafe but we are falling out of it...the cafe service is a mess...There are no rules. People jumping in front of you in the queue while you are ordering food and once you paid and want to enjoy your food( which to be honest is okay but it is expensive canteen food) you have to beg for a seat. Customers consuming only a coffe on a table of 4 will look at you but not be decent enough to make space for you. All this,while you are holding your heavy tray with food. It's appalling. Get some rules and get a floor manager.

The choices of main dishes could perhaps be improved, but they do the classics well. Nice seating areas outdoor, but the pigeon situation may need solving

Helpful & friendly service. Excellent coffee, great cakes (although only 2 options were vegan friendly). Would love to see more vegan food on the menu soon - sweet & savoury. Come on team The Brew House, London wants more! 😉 Sitting is available indoors and outdoors in the lovely garden.

Great selection of food and cakes. Everything is homemade and very fresh.

They said lunch is until 3:00 pm. I arrived at 2:59 and the lunch area was absolutely empty and clean. It is imposible that it looks so shiny at 3:00 when you offer lunch until that time. So disappointed! The staff were very rude, and they didn’t answer properly. The environment is amazing, that is because I put 1 star.

A wonderful coffee and snack area. Quiet, but in places needing some practical tlc on tables. The toilets are well looked after and the staff are great. Food is London prices, but the coffee is tasty and the cakes are delicious.

What a shame the cafe is now serving terrible sub standard, bought in food. It used to be a pleasure having lunch there, but under new management standards has deteriorated . V little choice,,rude service and over priced Waste of a beautiful space.

Really nice area to sit outside and good scones and cakes! I was a bit disappointed that they are using to go cups and single use plates etc. It not only creates a lot of waste but also diminishes the flair…

Lovely cafe, however woman behind the counter sternly ordered me to put my very small dog on the floor. It was 26° hot Summer’s day and I was carrying my dog because she was too hot to walk. Very strange behaviour from staff member with no explanation as to why. If it’s because dogs are not allowed, surely it would have been better to ask me to leave. My friend & I were very bemused. The Brew House, I recommend you to find staff with good customer service skills & review your dog policy - It’s Hampstead Heath after all!

Breakfast is always good. Sunday lunch is generous. Only problem is if you forget cutlery and are eating outside the pigeons herd in and demolish everything they can get their beaks into unless the food is guarded!

Unpalatable. I ordered a vegan main course; baked aubergine dish with “heritage carrots” and boiled potatoes. The only part of the meal that was edible was the potatoes. The aubergine was undercooked and under seasoned. As for the “heritage” carrots I could only surmise they called it heritage because they seemed very old, certainly passed their best. I often stop by for a coffee on a walk but it’s usually bitter and made with little care. Such a shame at its a wonderful setting.

We enjoyed a cuppa and a slice of cake outside after admiring the decor inside. The grounds were being closed off for a ticketed event so we weren't allowed to exit the way that we had come in and instead had to walk all the way around as it was going dark.

Excessively Overpriced, buns for breakfast rolls were not fresh. Bacon was cheap and very salty. Staff used face masks as chin warmers, did not cover nose. Coffee might as well been dish water. Mac Donald’s serve better food and coffee than this. Would rather this be a Mac Donald’s you would get better food and service for a reasonable price

Service without a smile! Don’t be fooled by the gorgeous Kenwood house and stunning surroundings, which are very beautiful. The staff in the cafe never ever smile and make your coffee and serve you with a scowl on their faces. The cakes are mostly very dry and the vegan wrap is truly the worst sandwich I have ever eaten in my life.

I was charged £9.65 for a sandwich and a chai latte. When I went to see the cashier, he only refunded me a part of what he was supposed to give me back. Check your receipt, you may be intentionally overpriced if you look like a foreigner or old. SHAME!

Mixed bag. The food is now too expensive at £12.50 for one small pork chop and some veg. £8 was the correct price. Obviously Kenwood house is getting too greedy with rents. Anyway, the taste of the food is very good. The staff are friendly but a bit dry and seem clueless about the food. I asked them if the chicken and pork were free range and they didn't know.

Have know Kenwood for many years. I think the previous providers had more flare and better value. The present hot meals menu has now been the same for a number of summer months. Even the staff must be bored with serving meat balls. At £12.50, it's much too expensive. £8.50 would be fair. A number of the serving staff, not all, are cheerless and uninvolved. Back to the management and team leadership on this one, I suggest. The pigeons and the odd crow are taking over just as seagulls do in seaside towns. This is because there are no signs on tables saying: 'Please self-clear your table to keep the pigeon population down'. They have become very annoying and risk taking, landing on tables when people are eating. On the positive, it remains a very nice environment to have a coffee. Pigeons don't seem interested in coffee.

Delicious - and HUGE - cheese scones! However, lacking organisation of queuing/ sensible paying situation ( i.e. those with bottled drinks and self serve item should not have to queue behind customers waiting for hot drinks and food!). Wonderful outdoor eating atmosphere!!

Lovely place to chill, But the cafe needs more to do.

I decided to buy some food here and it was chaotic to say the least. i spent £36 on The most disgusting meal I have ever eaten! The vegetarian option was a disgrace. I had to wait at least 15 minutes and ordered Hispi Cabbage with quinoa and red pepper slop. This meal consisted of half a undercooked cabbage cut in half with some dry sweet potato chips served with undercooked broccoli. I absolutely don't know why you would serve a vegan option like this which was so bad. I also ordered two oat milk coffees which were so strong that I left them. Just don't offer a Vegan or Vegetarian option if you lack experience or enthusiasm to make food that is edible. I queued for rather a long time to get the meal and sadly bought two. My day out was nearly ruined by such a lazy disgusting meal. I will never eat in this place again. However I have given one star for the delightful vegan cake I ate. Sadly I only bought one slice to share with my husband. I took a few bites of the meal and left it. I should have sat at the tables like many others in the know and either ate my own food or just stuck to cakes, black tea or juice. Absolutely not a place to eat for vegans or vegetarians. A cabbage cut in half and not even shredded is an absolutely bizarre choice to serve. Very unpleasant experience in such a lovely location.

For a cafe in the middle of a park I was shocked that I couldn't bring my dog in while I ordered. They had no alternative way for dog owners to order so I had to leave. Had my 6 year old type 1 diabetic daughter with me who really needed to eat but unfortunately unable to get her any lunch.

Lovely garden area! Affordable food as well. Definitely one of my go to place when I want scones!

A cafe overlooking a nice view to Kenwood and the Hampstead Heath, with outdoor seating in a beautiful garden. We had coffee there, and while the cafe itself has a stunning surrounding, the coffee is substandard. The flat white we had tasted only slightly better than those you'll get from McDonald - as if they are not really trying hard to provide a reasonable standard of food because they don't really have any competition around the area.

Hot food is unacceptably expensive.

A wonderful location overlooking Capability Brown parkland at Kenwood House. Attractive and spacious patio and terrace with traditional English planting. And the coffee isn't bad , either!

Kenwood Hampstead Heath was brilliant

A lovely historic garden cafe dating back to the glorious 1760s, perfect location for a contemplatory, unrushed cup of coffee in the classic Georgian setting. Can't go wrong with your choice, be that a double espresso or cappuccino, as the blend they use is strong and well balanced and the baristas know what they are doing!

Nice cafe, lots of seating, good choice of food and beverages. Ideal after a stroll on the Heath.

The cafe works well during this short period of 'outdoors-only' eating. You can take the food into the garden, or onto the benches outside and admire the lake.

It will probably be better when it fully opens.

I highly recommend you do not order the chorizo sausage roll, the meat it self smelled like a wet dog and it didn’t taste much better, between the meat and the pastry was an odd slime that was very off-putting. I think perhaps it was not thoroughly cooked.I wanted to contact them directly to give them this feedback, but I could not find any contact details. Please avoid disappointment!

Coffee was only OK, not hot enough.

Second time here and staff are absolutely the worst. Passive aggressive attitude and overpriced items. Unfortunately there is no competition for them, so if you’re in the area and thirsty, you got no choice :(

Well worth a visit to sit in its peaceful beautiful garden for a coffee.

When there I ordered an English breakfast tea with a poached and spinach. The spinach was delicious and the eggs were fresh. However the tea was too bitter and never felt any charm in the place.

Good food. Used to be good and reasonably priced pre lockdown. Now it's takeaway, the portions are half what they were!

The cakes are always dry add a bit more butter will you! staff are rude and impatient. Coffee is not good anymore. Always warm! Salad and soups are ok. Nothing amazing!

Staff a little quick to criticize, and watch out for the temperature of the coffee especially if you are old it will scorch you
